Great job guys! Really enjoyed the album lists from you both, but these song lists were another step forward. Particular shout out to Canuck Joe for the Bruce Cockburn “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” reference (I know you don’t like them, but check out the cover of this by Barenaked Ladies; it’s great!). Need some more Smiths here, but great to mention Bowie, Jason, and God Only Knows…love it…as well as Elvis and Goodbye Cruel World, which is a strong album. 1984 was so strong…back in the day, we thought it was just another great year, but soon the well would begin to go dry, regretfully. Cheers, JPE

Great lists all in all. Like on the albums lists, I'm totally in line with Jason in the top realm here. Just introduced my best friend to your top 2, and he loved them - you surely produced two new Echo and Furs fans in us. I also love Joe's call for the Phil Collins track - it's easy to dismiss it as too cheesy or too mainstream, but I think from a musical standpoint it's just a fantastic song.

Very good lists. Joe placing 4 Purple Rain songs in the top 10 backs up his complete love of Prince's album. Jason is similar with his inclusion of The Cars and The Psychedelic Furs. However, it seemed to me that both of you guys gushed the most for "How Soon is Now". Your comments about the song are spot on and as someone who was in his early 20's when the song came out, I can confirm that the song was a master-class composition that stood above everything else in The Smiths' catalog as well as almost anything else released that year.
As far as what was missed, I would have included R.E.M.'s "7 Chinese Bros." & "So. Central Rain". "Bad" by U2, "Downbound Train" by Springsteen and my favorite song of all-time: "The Boys of Summer" by Don Henley.

Jason: “Hold Me Now” is a solid track
Pleasantly surprised to see it included
It is a very “Eighties sounding “ track
    But solidly written and arranged
With a very straightforward chorus on repeat
And some somewhat clever and philosophically pragmatic lyrics 🙂✌️
    I like “Doctor, Doctor”, too
They were pretty solid on their follow up album with singles
“Lay your hands” and “King for a Day”
(As well as earlier hits (at least in the UK) “Love on Your side”, “Lies” and “We Are Detective”
But they weren’t taken seriously as an album artist (nor am I saying they should have been:)
Thus when they started not scoring big hits they were fairly soon forgotten 🤷‍♂️
And the next album’s lead single was “Get that Love” which either didn’t find its audience or who’s audience didn’t really any longer exist 🤔

Whattaya know? My favorite song of 1984 (all the way back in '84 when I was a recent college graduate) was "The Ghost In You"! I could never understand how that tune wasn't a smash hit (#59 on the Hot 100 but, even MORE headscratching, only #68 in the UK). I am also totally with you, Jason, on the merits of "Skin Deep" (which I find to be quite mesmerizing).

My top two are among my favorite songs ever, When Doves Cry by Prince and Bad by U2. The rest, are in no particular order:.This next one is, I believe, the only song here not from an album I currently own or at least owned at one point: I'll Wait by Van Halen. Not a Van Halen fan, but for some reason I really dig this song. Also love Drop Dead Legs, but I couldn't put two Van Halen songs on my list, that would be wrong. The rest: Downbound Train by Bruce Springsteen, All You Pretty Girls by XTC, Swim by Tom Verlaine, Heartbeat City by the Cars, Time the Avenger by Pretenders, Heaven by Psychedelic Furs, Don't Go Back to Rockville by REM, I Was a Kamikaze Pilot by Hoodoo Gurus, You Can't Get What You Want by Joe Jackson, New Sensations by Lou Reed, Church Not Made With Hands by the Waterboys, For Whom the Bell Tolls by Metallica, Sleep by Midnight Oil, Do It Again by the Kinks, Oh, Me by the Meat Puppets, World Shut Your Mouth by Julian Cope, Darlington County by Springsteen, Alice's House by Psychedelic Furs, Kosciusko by Midnight Oil, Show Me by Pretenders, Down at the Arcade by Lou Reed and Take Me With You by Prince. I think that's 25, if not I'll throw in Pride In the Name of Love.

There’s so much greatness in your lists .
The homer in me applauds Joe’s selection of Lover’s in a Dangerous Time , by Mr . Cockburn , who is a vastly underrated songsmith ( and a killer guitar player ) .
Joe , check out his album The Trouble With Normal , which came out the year before .
Jason’s selection of The Ghost in You happens to be my favourite Furs song .
Both of you had good selections from The Cars , but my favourite from that album is , It’s Not the Night .
Speaking of Greg Hawkes , he , along with Dave Greenfield ofThe Stranglers , are 2 of my favourite keyboard players .
Their work raises the level of all of the songs of their respective bands .
    Well done , gentlemen !

    Let’s GoCrazy by Prince
    Drive by the Cars
Stuck on you by Lionel Richie
    Against All Odds by Phil
What’s Love Got To Do With It by Tina
Glory Days by Bruce (I can’t believe I’m saying a Bruce song was overplayed :)
My favorite lyric: “I get my kicks above the waistline, Sunshine “ from “One Night in Bangkok”-
Although the Smiths’ one from Miserable Now is an excellent choice :)
Special award for brevity :Best single with literally only three different words in the chorus -
And With a majority of the times the words are used being the third word :) I’m Goin Down by Bruce Springsteen
(I tried to go with singles that peaked in the USA in 1984 -
I frankly did not in general (obviously:) consider album tracks as I kind of consider that a separate and substantially different list for myself :)✌️
(“Obsession” by Animotion seems to have been a mostly 1984 single worldwide.
It would relative to the year easily make my top ten.
But I’m counting it as a favorite of 1985 because it peaked on Billboard in the USA 🇺🇸 in 1985 :)
    -And
Likewise for Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora’s “When the Rain Begins to Fall “:)

I was just listening to Back on the Chain Gang. Learning that bass line is tricky - it is very intricate and I think I counted five different changes and, at the end, a change of key going up a step or half step. Just tracking it while listening. Surely the mark of a fantastic song. Jason has it right.

@@oppothumbs1 - Absolutely. Although you're probably chatting to the biggest Smiths fans of all time. They had the biggest impact on my life but when they were around (and I saw them many times), the adoration they inspired was Beatles-level. There was plenty of other good artists in the 80s but The Smiths in terms of cultural impact were unforgettable.

    • @oppothumbs1
      @oppothumbs1 Před 4 měsíci +1

@@drdavid1963 The biggest fan? So how much do you weigh? I am in and out of music, so I didn't hear of them until they called it a day. But I picked up the Best of I and then II and loved them. Then I picked up a video of them at Tower Records and enjoyed the wry wit and melodies and Morrissey's stage antics, which were silly but poignant in a warm but bizarre way. They were such a great band, like the Replacements or Neil Young for me; Morrissey seem to write about personal, quirky things that might have more mass appeal than one would think. Few can play jangly guitar or come up with melodies as Johnny Marrs. Can't get enough of that sound which probably goes back to the early 60s and then was never used enough as far as I am concerned. I might have missed out on the cultural impact but still see that they an unforgettable band.

I was in grades 10 and 11 in 1984 and this year defines my high school years in Cornwall. Different high schools there had different tendencies - classic rock (central), heavy metal (rural) and our school (the French school), was mixed with an appreciation of alternative and electronic etc. These different dispositions were expressed in ways similar to what you see in the film The Breakfast Club. This episode of TLM has it all - bravo - because 1984 exhibited a surprising mix of styles - heavy metal, hard rock, pop, new preppy styles, hip hop coming in, alternative and new wave at its peak, and the last of post-punk. How Soon Is Now was for me and my mostly alternative friends the defining song of that year, the way Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Years Day had been a year earlier and In Between Days or Meat Is Murder would be the next year. I'm partial to Relax because we did Frankie for the school air band contest and won with it, going to the city-wide contest along with our school-mates performing The Cars. In those years we would travel 1hr to Montreal, shop for clothes and records (12inches, imports, hard to find or new discoveries), maybe see a concert, get drunk and end the day at underground-ish nightclubs, where people danced to The Smiths, New Order, Bauhaus, Skinny Puppy, Jad Wio, Depeche Mode, etc. As a member of short-lived breakdance group (The Dynamic Force), Break Machine's 'Street Dance' has some resonance. Tenderness I concur with 100 percent and people loved Ranking Roger's dance moves, as well as Richard Butler spinning around in the Heaven video. I remember dancing to Prince at a dance in a church basement. I think the priests liked it. Rush's Grace Under Pressure was a sit at home listening experience for the most part. It's amazing that Killing Moon was in rotation on Much Music (Canada's MTV) because I was the only person I knew at the time that seemed to know about or like Echo & The Bunnymen. Camera by REM; Wire by U2; Such a Shame by Talk Talk; The Lebanon by Human League; Bad Life by PIL; Kill Yr Idols by Sonic Youth; Ultravox Dancing with Tears in My Eyes; Marcia Baila by Rita Mitsouko; Close (to the Edit) by Art of Noise; Our Darkness by Anne Clark; Each and Every One by Everything But the Girl; People Are People by Depeche Mode; Smalltown Boy and Why? by Bronski Beat; Waterfront and Up On the Catwalk by Simple Minds; East of Eden by Big Country; Save a Prayer by Duran Duran; From Her to Eternity by Nick Cave; A Pagan Place by The Waterboys; Two Tribes by Frankie; Michael Caine by Madness; Free Nelson Mandela by The Specials; New Song by Howard Jones; Shout by Tears for Fears; Shout to the Top or My Ever Changing Moods etc by Style Council; It Says Here etc by Billy Bragg; Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper; Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream) by Icicle Works; Incubus Succubus II by Xmal Deutschland; Pearly Dewdrops Drops by Cocteau Twins; Lovecats and Caterpillar by The Cure; My Kingdom by Echo & The Bunnymen; It's Like That by Run DMC. Kevin Ayers is cool. Boys of Summer by Don Henley is a nice, sentimental song. We didn't know The Raincoats back then but they were produce by Red Krayola member Mayo Thompson.

Best Joe's picks: Dress You Up (I forgot that), Unsatisfied, Tenderness, Oh Sherri, I feel for You, Purple Rain, Against All Odds, Jump, How Soon is Now , When Doves Cry, I would die for you, Let's go Crazy.
Jason's best imo: Heaven, How Soon is Now, Hold Me Now (good not great), The Ghost is You. Jason, I was expecting more matches but you nailed the Furs' pick.
Jason: PS . Forgot "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" was an excellent pick. I know Joe's musical tastes very well . I knew he would make a face or not like The Ghost in You. And then when he praises "Unsatisfied" by the Replacements, he has to stick a fork in them - about them copying this or that.

Joe: I agree that “You Can’t Get What You Want “ by Joe Jackson is his most underrated single.
I don’t believe it hit the top ten in the USA despite having hit all over it
    No video!
Forgotten on 80s radio formats it sadly seems
Plus the wonderfully long title when including the within-parentheses “Until You Know What You Want”
Pragmatic philosophy presented in splendid piano and brass
Despite three sides (!) of pretty good music on next album “Big World” there was no single as good as this track,
Not as good as either “ Steppin out” or “Breaking Us in Two” from the excellent Night and Day
(Certainly radio didn’t think so - And of course no videos, again ).

The Replacements "Unsatisfied" Who can wear his heart on this sleeve (not Mary Tyler Moore) with the right touch of emotion and intelligence, but Paul?
Jump - Van Halen Just a wonderful video highlighting the faux camaraderie of the band that was never actually there.
"Answering Machine" The Replacements, always original, with the first song on answering machine angst.
I Will Dare - the Replacements
    Androgynous - The Replacements
South Central Rain (I'm Sorry) - REM
It's My Life - Talk Talk . One of the great videos and songs with breath-taking shots of animals. Synthesizers and a great bass line with blue whales, spitting cobras, Manatee (a Doppleganger for singer Mark Hollis), golden eagles, and much more.
"Sixteen Blue" Maybe not the song, but Bob Stinson's guitar at the end is so haunting.
The Style Council "My Ever Changing Moods" Catchy, sophisticated, soulful, joyful melody. Song is about bad times the singer hopes children will never have to face such as fear of a nuclear war and other such problems. The song owes a debt to the great Classic IV's "Stormy" and the great Michele Branch/Santana tune "Game of Love" written by the New Radicals' dude.
Rattlesnake - Lloyd Cole and the Commotions " She looks like Eve Marie Saint in On the Waterfront. She reads Simone de Beauvoir in her American circumstance" If you have a problem with me quoting lryics, just tell me and suffer the consequences.
The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?"
The Ghost In You - Psychedelic Furs Not often does the phrase " adorable melancholy" come to mind. This music demonstrates why the greatest poetry rarely reaches the heights of the Furs and many rock/pop songs. It shows why everyone, including the Emperor with No Clothes, knows "Ulysses" by James Joyce needs a ton of editing and a ton of reading prep of obscure, not so relevant, literature.
    Heaven - Psychedelic Furs
Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls
Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
The Smiths - Heaven Knows I'm miserable now
The Smiths - This Charming Man
    Shout - Tears for Fear
People are People - Depeche Mode This is a catchy nursery rhyme about racism. With a blurry captivating, blurry montage.
Corey Hart - Aint Enough for You. Harrison Ford Doppelganger had no other songs I liked, but this digs deeps. Works well even with the same old sax from from Kenny G.
When Doves Cry - Prince . Powerful song.
I'm stuck on you - Lionel Richie. "I've got this feeling down deep in my soul that I just can't lose. Guess I'm on my way .. Mighty glad you stayed" No Dylan or Smokey Robinson, but heartfelt singing and good production.
Valotte - Julian Lennon His best song.
Smooth Operator - Sade A great song, video, story and the only song I like by her.
    Glory Days - Springsteen
    Dancing in the dark Springsteen.
Boys of Summer - Don Henley Not an Eagles (band) fan though Eagles Birds fan, but this is the best song Don Henley has made. I think it was written by Mike Campbell (of the Heartbreakers) and Don.
Easy Lover - Philip Bailey & Phil Collins
Tenderness - General Public A tender bouncy song.
Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good Fine one hit wonder.
Caribbean Queen - Billy Ocean And all heads turned 'cause she was the cream. In the blink of an eye I knew her number and her name, yeah. She said I was the tiger she wanted to tame.
Los Lobos - Don't Worry Baby
Los Lobos - Will the Wolf Survive?
Round and Round - Ratt Not into most metal bands, but I like this one.
Blue jean - Bowie . Good creative video which bests the song itself. Bowie is blinding in his many actor faces.
Pink Turns to Blue - Hüsker Dü
Dont go back to Rockville - REM
Take me on - A ha
I feel for you Chaka khan Written by Prince. Soulful, flirtatious, kinky in ways I don't understand.
"Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out" might be a throwaway or terrible song by a lesser band. With Paul's great vocals and terrific raw production of the band, it's so much more. Tommy was getting his tonsils out, and Paul, the sarcastic bastard that he was, serenaded Tommy with this song at the dentist. Personally, I think Paul could be a bastard, but the song doesn't really lay that out, or I was too naive when I first heard it and just thought it was clever, melodic, and a bit funny. People who are not fans will think it's a dumb song trying to be funny and miss out.
Eyes without a face - Billy Idol.
Out of Touch - Hall and Oates
Back on the Chain Gang - The Pretender Descended like flies.
The Only Flame in Town - Costello Can't remember it well, but probably the only decent song on this bad album.
Lovergirl - Teena Marie Who says I can't like some funk?
Eat It - Wierd Al Yank.

    • @mjleger
      @mjleger Před 4 měsíci +2

I wouldn't agree with Dr David. The first two REM albums are their best IMO albums - Murmur and Reckoning are beautiful and brilliant - and Life's Rich Pageant, although equally terrific, takes them in a more commercial direction. Joe's comment to markgoestofrankfurt ignores the politics of music - and we can debate that certainly. There was in alternative and new wave, not unlike punk and post-punk, a rejection of hard rock "middle American" conformism. Although hard and classic rock has working-class and folk connections (Beatles, Stones, Doors, Dylan, etc), and you could associate new wave and alternative with the "new romanticism" that accompanied the neoconservative politics of the era (preppies and later yuppies), new wave was the "youth" rebellion of that time against the old guard. It wasn't rockers vs mods, but it was similar. People who appreciated the progressive politics of artists like Billy Bragg or Style Council also liked alternative music, which was in heavy rotation in music videos. The preppy fashions that were popular alongside parachute fashions came and went in 1984, soon replaced by black alternative looks - the kind that morphed into the thrift store clothes you see in a 1990 films like Slacker. "British" alternative shifted to "American" gunge in the 1990s, and the link between cultural innovation, class issues and cultural politics ( gender, race and sexuality ) was skewed towards a more self-pitying and politically depressive mindset - less optimistic and less universally combative, more masculinist - with only bands like Radiohead, at that time, seeming to keep it together. From "I am an anarchist" to "here we are now." Those of us in the 80s who liked The Smiths, Talk Talk, P-Furs, Simple Minds or Echo & the Bunnymen - and yes, we were a smaller demographic, but what does that have to do with music - would likely have appreciated the excellence of Aztec Camera or The Blue Nile ( I still do ), but you had to do more digging to find the latter, as was the case too for bands like Pere Ubu or Guadacanal Diary, which were not unheard of. In comparison, Van Halen, Motorhead, Scorpions, Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister or Judas Priest were as popular on radio and music videos as Thompson Twins, The Cars, Go-Gos, George Michael, Sade, Madonna, Bananarama, Springstein, Do They Know It's Christmas, Prince, U2 or Bruce Cockburn (in Canada anyway). Between c.1980 and 1985, there was no "alternative" section in record stores, the same way there was no "cultural studies" section in the bookstores. Post-punk new wave bands were the more noticeable innovators. By the late 80, you were going towards jungle and club music, hip hop and a celtic wave. The freshness of the new wave had waned. After the more frivolous and commercial aspects of new wave made everyone sick, as had happened with glam rock, "alternative" became a watered-down section of the music store, more boring and sober, and with many of the great early bands were selling out to whatever extent. Some of the best groups, like The Cure, Elvis Costello, Cocteau Twins, U2, Joe Strummer, The Fall, Billy Bragg and Talk Talk, held on, doing the unexpected for however long. Some artists from the 70s and early 80s persevered, like Lou Reed, John Cale, Tom Verlaine, Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, Neil Young, Jonathan Richman, Tom Waits, Roger Waters, PIL, Laibach, Adrian Belew, King Crimson, Faust, David Byrne, etc - and thankfully. Dylan has arguably, and to date, outlasted all of them, reinventing himself every five years or so. The struggle continues.

Joe as a huge Prince fan i appreciate you not only putting half the album Purple Rain in your songs list but the joy on your face when you talk about them is really inspiring!! I grew up with Prince and seeing someone from your generation recognize his unique greatness( he was a strange guy in the best sense) is truly wonderful! Thank you sir!! Purple Rain IS the best album of all time. Those who know KNOW!! 🟣 🟣
