Smittybilt Gen 1 & Gen 2 Roof Top Tent Review, Repairs and Improvements

- We now have both versions of the Smittybilt Overlander tent, Gen 1 and Gen 2 đ
After around 150 nights and 3 1/2 years with our Gen 1 tent, I look back at how great it is, it still looks brand new! But it has required a little bit of maintenance, today I look at some quick easy repairs and some improvements.
I think I have found a solution to that obnoxious flapping noise!
I finally had the right conditions to verify my fix for the flapping noise with high winds while camping out by Nordegg. Wind gusts strong enough to fold the tents closed by themselves, and never flapped once đ
One of the best informative videos I've seen in a long time. We just bought a gen 1 and your video was full of very useful info. Thank you sir
Thank you for that.
We will be taking the Gen 1 out again next week and I have another improvement idea for it. Might be another video coming đ
Great detailed advise for that rain fly flapping problem. Just got our gen 2 as well.
Glad it helped!
good video, thanks for taking the time to tell us all this
Thank you this video answered a lot of questions and sold me on a smittybuilt.
Thank you for the detailed reviews!
Your welcome
this is one of the most informative yt vids ive ever seen thank you good sir
Thank you for the review. I had to repair my rain cover too and I have a video where I worked through the process.
Great Comparison Summary. Really appreciate the wind flapping tip!
Thanks for that đ
I have never heard that loud flapping noise since.
Great video! Sealed the deal for me for getting a smittybilt
You won't regret it đ
I'm looking forward to actually using our gen 2 for the first time next week. Winters are soon long here in Alberta...
Excellent video, thanks.
Excellent video, and I'm a critic! Very well done. Thanks!!
Excellent review and tips
Thank you.
Our Gen 2 broke the first time out last weekend. Easy fix.. I should do a follow up videođ
@@VoyagerOverland Uh oh! Iâm planning a cross country adventure, and trying to decide which RTT to go with.
@@sarahdell4042 Easy fix, we are still very, very pleased with it.
Voyager Overland Glad to hear. Itâs number one on my list.
Excellent, excellent review! Very detailed and thoroughly explained. I particularly like the modifications you made to the ladder. The ladder has very common complaints, but your mods may help quite a bit. I wonder if Smittybilt may actually consider incorporating those mods into their ladder.
Glad it was helpful!
I really appreciate you putting together this video. I have been watching videos and reading about different tent setups and even the more expensive ones have issues (some minor and some not so minor) that the owner has to sort out. As you said it, this smittybilt tent is looking to be the most for your money spent. Thanks again!
Glad it was helpful!
I think you just sold me on the Gen2. Was going to cheap out, but I think itâs worth the few hundred more bucks
After 30 years of military service (USMC/USA) I finally get to spend time with Family. Been looking for Weeks for a RTT. You helped me make my decision! Son heading to 11th grade will be going everywhere with me for the next few years. I am 6'3" 250. Wife will go from time to time, more perhaps if conditions are good. I have JKU, do you recommend XL or regular for my position? Thinking the extra 20lbs will not be a big deal for the added room. But any shaved off weight is a big plus. Again, thanks for this video!
You will not fit three adults in the small one so XL for sure đ
Best video Iâve seen on these. I want the GEN2 XL but canât find it anywhere. Plenty of the GEN1s near me and was already planning on upgrading the ladder with a telescopic one from Camping World, but all your other suggestions are great. Any concerns about the floor? Iâve heard Other videos mention the floor was upgraded in the GEN2. Iâll never have more than 2-3 people, mostly myself.
The floor is stronger with the gen2, the gen1 floor flexes more but it doesn't seem to hurt it any. We waited 30 days from 4WP, this seems pretty normal nowadays with Covid...
I have a friend who would be able to help. I'm ordering one myself for this summer and can tell you there's only 120 left in north America until the back orders fill. If you would like I can pass along the info.
Some very useful tips and good review of these two tents and the differences. I just picked up a Gen2 XL. Iâm looking forward to trying it out in Grand Cache next weekend with my family.
One complaint I have seen mentioned elsewhere is the zipper. My experience so far is that it is hard to start, the teeth donât always mesh properly. But Iâve only opened the tent once on the lawn as itâs not mounted yet.
Have you had any issues with the gen2 zipper?
For the bright interior light I was looking for a suitable PWN controller to dim the lights. It turns out thereâs already a product on Amazon with male to female plugs for this purpose, it just plugs in inline, Iâll be giving it a try this week.
Great video! It was very helpful, Thanks.
Zippers do not like the dust, Super Lube seems to do the trick and does not seem to attract dust.
That flapping is the most annoying thing ever. Scared the shit outta us and woke us up waaaaaaay earlier then we wanted to be up and since it didnt stop, we couldnt fall back asleep. But i'm sticking with the gen 1 as its a very nice tent and i got mine from an auto wrecker for $600 and it was pretty much mint condition. I go up in the mountains in bc and the wind can blow rediculously strong where i go.
Never heard that flapping noise again after bending an arc in the poles đ
Dose anyone know where I can get replacement poles for the tent
Do you have a link to the straps you use for the outer cover? I think the idea of running a third one over the ladder is a great idea!
Sorry, I saw the one I used is no longer available.
Any issues with the crease portion of the tent dipping under pressure? I unfolded the tent and when I went to get in, the crease portion began to sink.. Any reason why??
I'm not sure I understand your question, can you clarify?
@@VoyagerOverland So when the tent folds out, there is a crevice (folding portion of the tent) that I just found that has a latch on both sides of the tent that lock the floor down. Keeps the tent from caving in lol...
Did you buy this locally in Alberta or online? Waiting on a gladiator and want to move into a rooftop tent.
We got both from 4 Wheel Parts in Edmonton đ
Hi nice video can send me link for straps 5:03 please thank u
I don't have a link but they are from Princess Auto.
Wouldn't a pop up truck camper be easier and more convenient? You can still get to those hard to go places as the top pops up, but less work for set up and you can put a stove and fridge in in, as well as the bed is always set up.
Every product has its pro's and con's. Can't get a truck camper in a Jeep and can't go to the places we go with a truck. There is no one choice for all, only the choice that is right for you đ
I appreciate your comment, thank you.
