  • Unboxing and Installation Of the Smittybilt XL Roof Top Tent. We had a bunch of problems with the installion of the this tent, mostly due to the terrible instructions. In this video we show you step by step how the installation process went for us, give some tips on how to make this process go smoothly for you and also have a few laughs along the way.

    I genuinely cannot thank y’all enough for this video!!! We just installed the Smittybilt Overlander XL Gen2 and your video made what would of been a miserable process extremely straight forward! The instructions it came with are completely useless and there really aren’t any other videos out there doing a full install process from start to finish like this. Thank y’all!

    Your video was not only HILARIOUS but SOOOOO helpful! We didn't even use the instructions, because we thought we didn't have them, and found them in one of the bags at the very end. My husband was also very upset we stopped the video too early when putting the mounting brackets on, as he lost the opportunity to "support" me while I screwed the brackets on 😂. 10/10 on your video, thank you so much!

    Just got my smittybilt XL today, I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE CLEARANCE ISSUE WITH THE FACTORY BARS!!! I have a 2015 Subaru Outback with factory bars, the bars sit so low and the vertical bars are so big and awkward I can barely get a wrench to tighten the nuts on the clamp. It took me 5 hours tonight to install all the clamps because they would move literally a centimeter each turn. If i got aftermarket bars im sure it would be much better but I honestly don't know how im gonna get the tent off because it takes so dang long. Im glad someone else is feeling my pain.

    • @garrettanderson6797
      @garrettanderson6797 Před rokem

      I also had to hammer the bolts into the slide plate because the bolts would turn with the nuts and the top of the bolt would not fit into my slide plates.

    Great video...excellent team work!
    We did 3 months and 10k miles in Australia in a smaller Adventure Kings version of this on a Toyota Prado. It was already attached and setup instructions were long gone. Biggest problem was figuring the right placement of the canopy supports. On the 1st leg of our adventure we spent four very wet days ìn the Daintree Rainforest. Yeah I know...Rainforest, but it rained more than usual that time, because they actually closed the Ferry, that never stops running we were told, for 24hrs. We had to find a dry area to let the mattress dry out. Seemed everywhere we traveled, even to Ularu, Ayers Rock, the rain followed us. One store in the middle of The Outback closed for the rain so people could enjoy it. Yeah...its that hot and dry in January there.
    But, after 23 years with Uncle Sam, in two different services, I have to say this was one of my top ten life experiences and I would not trade it for anything.
    I finally broke down and ordered the XL for my suburban. I hoped to mount it where it opened over the back so I could get an annex later, but it sticks out a foot on each side. Looks like an airplane with its wings slightly chopped. I don't believe its a good way to mount it and the other way the cross supports are flimsy. I even got extra supports from another factory roof rack, but the attaching points for all the cross supports are plastic.
    I've seen an entire roof rack lieing on the side of the road that had a sheet of plywood on it in North Texas...constant 40mph winds there. So I was very concerned and interested in the stability of yours being attached only to the crossbars and driving interstate or highway speeds with an additional headwind.
    I see you have already migrated yours to a trailer, but I'm curious how this affected your original setup before the migration.
    Love the video...Thank you!

You wouldn't want them too close together or else someone who sleeps too close to one edge will bend that edge of the tent base. You also wouldn't want them too far apart for someone who sleeps in the middle or else the tent will sag in the middle. ?

    So you put this on the factory roof rack? I thought those are only rated for like 150lbs. I have this same tent and was thinking it's going to be way too heavy for my factory rack (fully loaded). Did you have any problems with the factory cross bars bending?

    • @journey2asimplelife609
      @journey2asimplelife609  Před 4 lety

      Yeah we did put it in the factory cross bars, mainly wanted to see if it "could be done" it did not hurt the crossbars, however it did flex them enough that the bolts on the tent clamps were making contact with the roof of our Suburban. Since the video we have the tent on a trailer with heavy duty steel crossbars. I definitely recommend upgrading your bars.

    Hey guys, I finished installing our XL last night and the kids are out beta testing it tonight. Question, though, @29:05 up top, where do those aluminum poles that are part of the rain fly attach to? Someone please rewrite the instruction manual!

    • @journey2asimplelife609
      @journey2asimplelife609  Před 4 lety +1

      Those just slide into little pockets on the tent. It's so the rain fly can be removable so you can use the skylight

      How is it as far as noise when you're driving? I notice wind howling at 65-75mph, so I wonder if a really big wind deflector will help things. Thanks again for the informative video

    Great video, has the factory roof rack held up?? We have a Nissan Armada with similar roof rack. I'm having a hard time finding aftermarket upgraded cross bars, if you can let me know, thanks!!

    • @journey2asimplelife609
      @journey2asimplelife609  Před 3 lety

      The factory crossbars on our suburban held up but the problem was they sit to low so the bolts from the tent clamps would press into the roof of the car while when you put wieght in the tent. We ended up mounting the tent on a trailer recently. I would recommend get new crossbars or a roof rack that will support the weight better if can

      I would say you will have exactly 3.5 inches between the bolts so it will be tight squeeze but it should work.
