This video is about WHICH toys are good for a child's overall development, HOW to play with toys, WHAT to do when a child won't play with toys, and tips for implementing a toy rotation that will help your child's creative play, imagination and cognitive skills develop!

How to ENCOURAGE developmental skills through PLAY at home!:
Step 1) Designate a SPECIFIC play area!
Define a space that is comfortable, fun and perfect for play!
Grab a play mat, blanket, or cushioned mat and be sure to move furniture out of the way so there is enough room to jump, roll & pretend!
Step 2) Get ALL of your toys out. TOSS, donate or get rid of toys that are broken or missing pieces! This will allow you to really see how many functioning toys you have to work with!
Step 3) Divide all of your toys into 3 different categories! **then determine which categories you may need MORE or LESS toys for!
TOY CATEGORY 1) Thinking toys: matching, stacking, building blocks, shape sorters, puzzles, potato head, ring stackers, anything promoting cognition
TOY CATEGORY 2) Gross/Fine Motor Development Toys: TUNNELS, parachutes, balls, play mats, pounders, squigs, indoor trampolines, ride on toys, etc
TOY CATEGORY 3) Pretend Toys: Barns, baby dolls, microphone, dress up clothes, band instruments, kitchen play sets, doll houses, cars, pretend vet sets, etc
Extra tip: Place toys and all matching pieces in plastic Ziplock bags so that you (and your child) can SEE what it is and keep all of the pieces together.
NOW that you have your toys separated into appropriate categories:
PICK 9. ( Three from each category) +Plus 1 large stay out toy (ride on toy/kitchen play sets/puppet pretend set, etc)
Get ready to ROTATE! After setting up multiple rotation groups, place each group in a storage container to get ready for next time.
SET IT UP! Place toys in 1st rotation group around the room LOOKING like they are SUPER FUN!
Keep the toys in rotation for 3-5 days.
Rotate & increase to 7 days.
Finally, rotate & increase to 2 weeks.
Boom. You're done!

Less toys encourages your child to play MORE & be CREATIVE with their toys! This allows for meaningful interactions & richer play experiences over time!
Make sure to get DOWN on the floor and PLAY with your child with the toys so that they KNOW what to do!
Meet your child where they are at with their developmental language: DO NOT overwhelm your child with TONS of toys and pieces to toys. Keep toys/pieces minimal if your child has minimal words. Add on as the toys rotate back into play and as their language develops!
Remember: Simple is better when it comes to toys!

I'm very grateful to stumble across your channel. It made me having a clearer image of why my 15 mos twin boys doesn't listen when I try to teach them. One of the twins always want me to open the book for him but he would ran away after then the other would just flip endlessly through the pages making his brother mad..

I'm a school SLP and love your videos for my parents, but I work in a very low-income area and most of my parents would definitely not be able to throw out broken toys/toys with missing pieces, because they don't have the money to replace them. I'd love to see a video on using whatever toys you *do* have creatively/ in new ways to encourage more language.
Love that! I also service title 1 schools & preschools so I totally understand. Sometimes kids only have a ball, etc. I can definitely start doing videos on incorporating language in daily routines or using one toy! Great idea!

They can get a lot of toys by looking apps where people sell their not needed stuff, sometimes they can have it even for free. I have done that a lot! I also like dollar tree store, they have even puzzles. They have a pistol to make bubbles with another bubble inside!

When Your kids are very good behaviour all the time and always taking good care of their things, keeping their rooms very clean, loving their favorite things and want to make nice childhood collections of their things: books, clothes, toys, video games, clothes, DVDs and etc, then donataing is very wrong thing to do. If You have few space then storage boxes and shelves will help You out and Your kids will be very happy and thankful then, if they can keep their favourite things. Childhood things are very valuable and it is very sad, if they wonât see them anymore in their life. Every child should have the right to keep their things, if they can take good care of them all the time!!!

Now my kid has made some progress
He repeats 2-3 words after us. He does labeling of objects and is able to identify almost all fruits, colours, shapes and objects. He sings many rhymes, but the problem now is receptive language. That is little/ negligible. How to improve that?

That's a great video, i've got some ideas. i have heard about toys rotation and it doesn't work for my kid, because she has such a great memory, she can still remember a toy 1 month later! And she still has too little interest in the toys even new toys. She has more interest on pretend play, so can you please record a video with your ideas without buying a lot of expensive toys. i am not really a creative mom because i really have little play skills and i cannot come up even with simple idea. I probably not only one:) And i tired of buying toys which just sit and take place and my little one will play only 1 min with them no matter what i do.

@@Rose-hb7qm oh! He is doing great now! He goes to school and he loves his friends at school and he's always asking to go to school even on the days the out or school is closed! I love how he loves to play with the kids. The first time he went to school it took him 1 month to warm up to the teachers and students. he switched schools for personal reasons and his next school it only took him 2 weeks to warm up to the kids when I dropped him off and not to cry. Just keep your child around other children, if it can be the same that would be better. I realized son is like my husband and my father, it takes him a while to warm up to new people.
SO glad I stumbled upon this channel...this video was SOO incredibly helpful and answered almost every question I had. I just had a couple questions. Where do sensory toys and stuffed animals fit in or does it depend on what the toy is? Also, is the amount of toys provided the same for multiple children? We currently have 2 under 2 and are hoping to be done after a third sometime within the next year or so. ;)
Excellent question! I would say they need to have the specific toys that are age-appropriate, so if One of your children is only using cause-and-effect toys bc age appropriate, and the other one has moved her to functional play or even pretend play then they would need different sets of toys out!

Fellow SLP here! Love watching your videos. Just accepted a position at a peds clinic for speech. I heard you mention a trampoline and we have one at the clinic. What speech and language/artic skills do you work on with the trampoline? Thanks!
Ahhh! I typically do action verbs like jump, run (in place), teach wait (set a timer - then say GO GO GO!), or use it in an obstacle course. Or jump 10 times, say 3 words, etc! Or you can even have them say the words while they jump if they can get trials correct!
I like to just incorporate the tramp & the tunnel and any speech or language activities that we do - sometimes I will hide cards and the tunnel or have them go through the tunnel and crawl over the trampoline or put one under the trampoline for prepositions, really anything to keep them engaged!

Ok great! I will use these ideas. We also have a small rock wall so I have been thinking how to use that as well with speech therapy. One idea for a video is cloze phrases. The goal was written already and I was following it. Didnât learn much in grad school about it and there is not a ton of CZcams videos about it. I get the concept like ready set --! (Go) but I could use more ideas. Also teaching yes and no. Thanks so much!

Just wondering what you would recommend for severely delayed children who respond only to musical toys (esp. those with buttons)? No functional play and no interest in other toys. Racking my brain over this given a new little munchkin who was placed on my caseload.
Laura maze has a great video about kids not interesting in playing with toys. I have the same kid, very difficult to address the issue and didn't get much help on it. I am a mom.

I just found your channel, its amazing, I have a question though... My son is 3 (just turned 3 recently) and quite often with toys like puzzles, he will do them a couple times if that then never really look at them again... maybe he wil use the pieces from it somewhere else, if I'm lucky... but yes.... same with his like doll house, he loves it and would get out all his characters and move them around the little house, now he doesn't look at it, he only was interested for a couple months... I'm at a loss... because just as he was starting to develop really good play that seemed to be age appropriate. Now it seems he is just bored alot.... he used to play with his wooden fruit you can cut with a little knife, now its like, hes bored of it. Same with local playgrounds, we get bored after using all the equipment twice and he's done... HELP PLEASE. Nothing I get seems to peek his interest for very long :(
What about moving the toys around - doing a toy rotation - showing him different ideas of how to play with each to spark creativity! sometimes just relocating a toy from the main room into the tub can now spark new play routines and creativity because maybe now its sinking, or under attack from pirates, or floating on top of bubbles, etc! Also, adding toys into a sensory bin (cheap from dollar tree - sand, rocks, uncooked noodles, beans, rice, etc) can also drag out attention and play routines! czcams.com/video/vkd4gvHj3Kc/video.html

How much time a day would you suggest parents/caregivers should actively play with 18month - 2 year olds?
Research says 5 hours per day but for more parents thatâs unbearable. I would say, set a timer for 15 min, 3-4 times per day to start! If you can do more, go for it! But be all in for just the 15 if you can!

I have two kids that are 3 and 1 ⊠how many toys should I have out for each child? I am trying very hard to encourage speech development in my 3 yr old as she is very behind.
Approximately 5 for each age! (10 total!) or if they have separate rooms w toys (3-4 in each room that stays there) + same in other room for each child
How do you use the trampoline for language skills ?
I love using the trampoline to name things in a category (i.e. let's name ANIMALS while you jump!) you can also play I spy - or any other language provoking game using labeling or descriptions!

maybe, this is out of topic, but I've a question for you. Currently interested in learning about suprasegmental. I read journals, articles, but there are things that make me confused. and I found several journals using the terms suprasegmental and prosody. what is the relationship between suprasegmental and prosody? are they the same? and if don't mind can you give me some references where it's fully explained? thanks!
Are the 9 toys supposed to be the only toys available to the child? It seems you are directing this toward one on one play with these toys, so how much time should parents be playing with the child? My 6 yr old seems to get annoyed after a couple of hours and wants to play independently. In regard to getting rid of toys that are not age appropriate, do you still suggest getting rid of them even if the child actively plays with them and enjoys them? My 6 yr old loves his stacking rings, I hate to remove them since he enjoys them so much. Of course his stacking toy has 3 posts with different shapes with the same size centers so it doesn't auto correct by not fitting on the post if you place them in the wrong order... Thanks for all you do, you have been so helpful to me while I try to make my way through the autism path...
Hey there! Thanks for watching & for the comment! 9 rotating toys - 1 toy can stay (it can be the rings if thatâs his favorite)! The goal is to just prompt them to attempt to play with other toys for longer than usual. I would recommend playing with your son as much as possible, but also giving him the opportunity to play by himself, possibly set a timer. Do a 20 minute play session with you, then timer goes off & he can have the next 20 min for independent play - this is a very high number though a lot of kids will not tolerate playing interactively with someone for that amount of time so start small and work your way up in time increments!
Play is the most important developmental piece - Laura Mize recommends playing / direct attention for nearly 23-25 hours per week, but honestly thatâs A LOT. So just as much as you are able to, and it sounds like you are doing a FANTASTIC job so hang in there!
Will your son combine the ring stacker toy with another toy by chance? That might be the next step is getting him to use the ring stacker in another way like maybe create a game where you toss them on or match them with objects in the room that are the same color, etc.!
@@TheSpeechScoop Yeah he will combine toys.. . for example him and I build a race track that is as big as our living room and then we race the cars on it. Sometimes we even use cars that aren't exactly for the track. He either gets bored with playing or he gets stuck on a certain action and refuses to do anything different. For example when we play with the little people farm, he won't allow me to move the animals around... he insists that the cow stay in the barn that I put him in the very first time we played with the set and the same with the other animals. I have even tried only using one of the animals and every time I move it to a different location, my son grabs it away and puts it in its original place. He is a master sorter and I have come up with many different "games" to incorporate matching and sometimes he will play with me for even more than an hour other times he with humor me for 10 -15 minutes and then become uninterested or what I call argumentative because no matter how I play he will "correct me" ... As I said sometimes he will play with me for hours but others only a few minutes... Should I insist he play with me or by doing that will the result be the opposite of what I am trying to get?

Hi! I live in Asbury park nj currently
