    HOW CAN I GET A CHILD TO ATTEND TO BOOKS:
    #1) Ensure your child has an age-appropriate attention span
    #2) Read repetitive books because this uses VERBAL ROUTINES! (let your child fill in the blank)
    #3) Read sing-songy books! (Melodic Intonation)
    #4) Incorporate sensory play and gross motor activities within reading the book! Read 1 page - take a lap or crawl through the tunnel. Read 2 more pages - go through the obstacle course - read 3 pages... you get it
    #5) Use a first/then compliance technique to increase motivation (using very simplified language). Develop this skill by beginning with a preferred task (like a high five "FIRST high-five/ then turn page!)
    #6) Be EXCITED and OVEREXAGGERATE your voices, sounds and characters!
    #7) Pretend to need help! Pretend like the pages are stuck & use those words "STUCK!" "HELP!" Let your child be the HERO & help you!
    #8) Use a simple book!!! Don't read an overly wordy book! SIMPLE words, sounds, noises, etc!
    - instead! Make simple books MORE difficult
    #9) Prepare a space AND TIME (make it a routine) for your child to read books! Have a cuddly corner or a special, cozy spot for reading time!
    #10) Pick a book that has gross motor activity or movement incorporated into it!

    Thank you for all of this awesome information. I have been binge watching your videos. My 19 month old is super quick at picking up on everything except new words. I feel like she is talking but I don’t understand what she is saying. She has tone inflection and utters what seem to be words and I know she is trying to communicate but my husband and I can’t make out what she is saying. I am carving out two hours a day effective immediately to work with her and just purchased some items from your Amazon shop. I am happy to say I already had some of the items you recommend but unfortunately think I need to really focus on being consistent. Thankfully I work from home so I should be able to get this done. Again, thank you so much. I am moving forward with confidence knowing I can help my baby be her very best 😊

    I love all your videos. Very helpful. Do you work with kids with autism? My son is 3 and he really has a hard time sitting down. I was told we can’t start speech until he is able to.

    If you have a chance, could you do a video about working on speech and language with outdoor activities? My son LOOOOOVES going outside on walks and stuff so I want to be able to have him enjoy that. I also want to make sure that we are making the most of our time and able to practice and work on new skills in the most effective ways while we are enjoying outdoor activities. I find it particularly difficult to get down on his level when we're outside. Do you have any tips?

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před 3 lety +3

      Greeeaaaatttt idea! When my daughter was little, she was the same way, LOVED being outside & also loved the swing! She was in speech, so I would stand in front of her while pushing her on the swing (facing her), and then grab the swing to hold her up for a few seconds & prompt/model a sound since she was at face level, which heightened motivation & she loooooved it! Hope this idea helps for now & I will brainstorm some other outdoor play activities! I do a lot of water table play in early intervention at homes, if you need a water table, I have some recommendations on my Amazon storefront page at Amazon.com/shop/speedyspeech if you want to check them out! Lots of verbal routines like “one, two, SQUEEEEEZE!” When playing with a sponge in the water or “ready, set, Gooooooo!” With the floating boat & then making the motor boat sound for fun as an onomatopoeia! This is a great idea so I will definitely put it on the list! Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!

Our dr says it's very common untill age 7, but I'm worried by then it will be to engrained in her to fix! Any advice or info would be very much appreciated!!

    How many words should a 15 mo old say . My daughter just turned 15 mo and only says mama , baba , dada .

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před 3 lety +1

      That is typical 1-3 words from 12-15 months, then 18 months should be approximately 50 words but it sounds like she’s on track or not far behind!

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před rokem

      There is actually some scary research on Cocomelon and how it is literally addictive to a toddler's brain- I will not provide links but I would definitely look into that. I would limit screen time completely, and be "miserable" for a few days, but I PROMISE you that you will see a completely different child after. Speaking from my own experience as a parent as well as a therapist from working with parents. HANG IN THERE!
