    FUN FACT: When presented with a new / unknown food, a child may take up to 10-15 times of exposure BEFORE they will consider trying it!
    1) Continue to offer your child new / unfamiliar food / leave it out for continued exposure / desensitization
    2) Offer food in altering colors, shapes, sticks, circles, half circles, with different dips, different brands, food with skin on, or food with skin off, etc
    3) Be sure to foster a positive eating/mealtime environment. Observe your child's interaction at the table - do they immediately run away from it? Are the demands too high at the table? Is a mealtime experience too overwhelming for a little one just learning to eat?
    Ensure that your child ENJOYS sitting at the table / under the table / in the highchair, & enjoys eating their preferred foods PRIOR to offering new / unknown foods that may be stressful or overwhelming for a child, and therefore, create a negative association with meal time
    5) Use a kitchen play set to encourage play!
    Melissa and Doug Link - amzn.to/2ZiTdtr
    6) Begin expanding food inventory by offering crunchy carbs and packaged food first for improved consistency and expectation when eating, in addition to the carbs breaking down in saliva faster. Inconsistent foods: fresh fruits, home made cookies/muffins.
    7) Ensure that YOU are eating the food WITH your child. Model, model, model. Make FUN and YUMMY sounds - "mmm, mmm, mmm. Yum! Ah!" etc
    ** A child is 55% more likely to TRY a food if they see a parent, sibling or caregiver eating it
    8) Remove expectations and pressure of eating the food, begin with PLAY activities FIRST - put painters tape on the wall, offer a FEW cherrios (anything else) on a plate and model simply picking it up and putting it on the wall / tape. Stick an uncooked spaghetti stick into playdough on a paper plate and put cherrios/fruit loops, any other circular foods on there. Play FUN music in the background. Continue exposure & playing with food without expectations
    9) Ensure your child has an appropriate rotary/munch chew pattern. See a feeding specialist or SLP if you are unsure.
    10) Try not to directly reward your child for taking bites of non-preferred food in exchange for a bite of preferred food. When we try to RESTRICT something, they simply want it more. Change your language if you use this approach to encompass the message of "the sooner we finish our dinner, the sooner we can have our Saturday desert!" *set up a schedule (visual if possible) and provide desert on certain days of the week. Offer the non-preferred foods (lets say carrots - in circles, half circles or sticks, only 1 of each choice, on a plate with a SMALL amount of different options of dips to try at dinner - use small plastic containers (peanut butter, ranch, etc) Offer the small 3 carrot option at dinner and ask your child which one they like and talk about which one you like! Model eating the carrot at dinner while making fun sounds! If this is the first 10-15 times your child is seeing a carrot, there is no demand to try the food. Offer a "no thank you" bowl if your child would like to remove it from their plate (this encourages a natural and easy way to communicate that they are not yet ready to try the food, and decreases refusal / trantrums related to mealtime by your child having control of the situation and also encourages them to touch it in order to move it from one place to another.) Continue to offer the carrot options and contiue modeling eating them, smelling them, making them in "ants on a log" or feeding them to brother, sister, stuffed animal, etc. Target "let's eat our carrot so we can get to desert faster!)
    What we want: A LONG TERM, long lasting meal time enjoyment and fostering a healthy and positive relationship with food.
    What we DONT want: to force a child to eat a food or over-reward for eating certain foods in order to get a more preferred food, which can foster a negative relationship with food.
    11) Name all foods being offered in a FUN or EXCITING way
    12) Involve your child in the food inventory process by letting them CHOOSE from pictures of foods that you'd like to add to their inventory.
    13) Offer very SMALL portions at first, mixed in/on the same plate with preferred foods. Put foods in FUN silicone baking cups!

    The relationship society has with food today and the fact that we don't know how to cook anymore is the major problem with our kids being picky eaters and therefore, developing different health complications. Every time we try to cook, we are constantly looking for new ways to add good taste to our foods, but unfortunately we are not able to achieve this without the use of artificial seasonings. Today, I'm not surprised that kids have a weird relationship with food.
    There's a great story behind each food and recipe that we don’t know about, and actually this could be the way to catch kids' interest to eat better, by understanding what and why they eat it. Remember, the first thing a kid does to food is to touch it and smell it before deciding to eat. I'm a food specialist and I do the exact same thing before I choose to work with a new product. I put it in the palm of my hand and feel the skin and the weight, then I smell it to make sure it's ripe enough, if there's no smell, well that tells me there won't be any taste or very acidic.

    Thank you so much for posting your videos. They’re very helpful. I started the speech hand cues with my little one and he is starting to make new sounds. 🙂
    I was wondering if you could please do another video on introducing foods. I have an 18 month old who doesn’t eat or drink. He’s exclusively tube fed. He shows interest and is constantly putting non-edibles in his mouth. He also enjoys crunchy foods but he keeps choking on them and he has a hard time with baby purées or the net feeder. I will put three small dots of baby food on his tray and he’ll start retracting. Any ideas? Is it really just not forcing, continued exposure, and repetition?
    Thank you.

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před 2 lety

      Hey there!! Does he still use the bottle / pacifier? If so, This can cause a suckle reflex to continue instead of the suck & the tongue will continue to thrust forward making it difficult to chew, hence choking.
      Use highly dissolvable solids & purées on top if possible! Check out @eatsayplay on Instagram as well!!

    Hi!
    What would be your advice on an exclusively breastfed toddler who cries every time food is place in front of them? There’s no issues with not being able to swallow my baby just looks at foods even purées like its a scary thing

  • @EffectivePickyEatersSolutions

    what is your opinion to teach sign language? I don't recall that you have any video on that topic. Our SLP highly focused on sign language with combining sign words into sentences, but I am not really sure that we are going to right direction especially with the fact that my kid probably has CAS. but she is only 2. And I cannot switch my SLP to someone else bc demand is so high and there is a huge waitlist, and I'd say that I am lucky that I have what I have.....

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před 2 lety

      Hmmm I don’t think it’s a bad approach per say, I think she may just be trying to focus on improving the most functional form of communication so that your little one can communicate the most effective & quick way; however, with that being said, if a child is vocal, I usually stick with improving focalization & then just add in signs as needed. But everyone is different. Maybe just have a chat with her?

    I've been working weekly with an occupational therapist for my son since he was 5 months old. He is now 18 months old and nothing has helped. He has had feeding aversions since he was only 5 weeks old. He also has extremely sensitive gag reflex. He gags and vomits daily and is under the first percentile in weight. None of the tips have helped and I don't know what else I can do. He has finally started wanting the bottle and is no longer vomiting at the site of the bottle but the OT wants me to take away the bottle now and it's his only source of caleries/ nourishmentthat he gets. I cannot get him to take a different cup and when I tried for 24hrs to not give the bottle he literally did not eat the whole day. He refused everything that I offered. I cannot just stop the bottles because of this. It's very scary and frustrating especially because he is my 4th child and i have never had something like this happen with one of my other children. I wish some of these tips would have worked. I am still looking for a way to help him.

  • @Milen983
    @Milen983 Před 2 lety

    I realized that he doesn’t eat if I offer it once or twice. I even do it at the same time many many times and eventually he gives up. Funny, that he opens his mouth really big and swallows almost without swallowing when at daycare, when he takes his time and opens his mouth very small.
    He sits still on his stool in daycare, while at home he likes to watch ipad or play with toys when eating.

  • @Milen983

    I peel the blueberry skin and he eats it readily. The same with cherries. He thinks it is inedible and spits out if it has skin. He ate cucumbers when was a baby. But after stopping it for months, he spits them out.
