    //3 THINGS TO INCLUDE IN EVERY THERAPY SESSION:
    #1) GROSS MOTOR ACTIVITY:
    Use a tunnel or painter tape to create an obstacle course
    SENSORY: Grab a BIN
    MEET THEIR ENERGY or HELP BOOST Their Energy Level for active engagement with a FUN activity (bilibo chair, laundry bin (sing row row row your boat and then dump them out when you say DREAM! Create a verbal routine with this and then WAIT before saying the last word to see if they will fill in the blank!)
    #2) CREATE an END to ALL activities!
    If something goes IN, it must come OUT to END the activity!
    Clean up to create an END or have the little people / animals / mini objects go IN a bin, cup, bag, box, WHATEVER you have! Create a play routine with a clear and defined END to help motivate and encourage a child to begin!
    Set a visual timer, if needed!
    #3) Use a child's INTERESTS and STRENGTHS to lead the session! THEN expand!
    Use INTRINSIC MOTIVATION to determine WHAT we play with that day!
    JOIN IN on their activity by EXPANDING, MODELING LANGUAGE, and SHOWING THEM what to do with the objects - to BUILD off of what they want to do! (TAKE TURNS!)
    Provide OPTIONS to decrease echolalia and follow through on the child's response / request (do what they chose / say)
    USE MUSIC!!!!!!! Some children are GESTALT LANGUAGE LEARNERS meaning that they learn language in CHUNKS (phrases) instead of at the word / symbol level. Music is a GREAT way to target joint attention, increasing attention span, following directions, gross motor, fine motor, receptive language, turn taking, imitating gestures/words, completing verbal routines, making request, YOU NAME IT!
    // Here are my FAVORITE songs to use in therapy:
    Happy and You Know It
    Hokey Pokey
    Ring Around the Rosey
    Freeze Dance
    Head, Shoulders, Knees Toes
    Wheels On the Bus
    Ants Go Marching
    Itsy Bitsy Spider

    Your videos have been so informative and provide so much rich ideas. Thanks so much! Side note, I agree with the child first terminology. A child should not be defined as their label, they are a child first and the label is just a small part of them.

  • @kearahartson2596
    @kearahartson2596 Před 2 lety

    thank you so much for your videos! i've watched almost all of them. My son is 28 months and despite best efforts following everything you say he doesn't progress past "dododo dadada nanana mamama nonono" He makes eye contact and plays along excitedly. when i wait to prompt him for words like "mama up" or an animal sound in a book or "ready... set.... " he will look at me and wait then be annoyed i didn't say it and just be done with the game. Or he goes to extreme lengths to avoid having to ask for things. He will pull out his word cards to indicate his want but he won't attempt the words! He's currently in speech and music classes and awaiting EI but im at a loss. He understands simple commands, "toys away, shut door, etc" but just seems to have a genuine disinterest in attempting singular words despite endless repetition and simple talk and sign language etc etc.

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před 2 lety +1

      Hmmm okay, thank you for all of this info! Let’s try 1-2 weeks of simply NO prompts / cues only modeling FUN onomatopoeias words & no pressure to imitate anything. Sometimes when we remove the pressure, a child will naturally blossom & become more confident in their skills! I’ve seen this only 1 other time & we did this, and it did work after day 10. So just no cues to imitate or repeat words “show me” what we want. Oh! Cookie! Okay! Yum! Cookie! Here’s a cookie!” & pretend to fall down saying “whoops!” Over & over again, on the swing “weee!” Out of the tub, “ta da!!” After drinking “ahh!” Just any fun onomatopoeia sounds you can make, focus on using those all day without pressure to imitate & let’s see what happens!!

  • @honeygladyspotutan6788

    Thank you for your videos! It gives me a lot of ideas to make play "fun" at home. Im just wondering if what other actvities can we do with a ring and basketball? That's my son's favorite. He's turning 2. 😊

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před 2 lety

      Laundry bin game with basketball! Different size balls! Using painters tape to create lines where you have to shoot from! Hiding rings, matching them with colors, putting them in the fridge, ring toss! Bounce off games! Love that!! Also I have a whole list of recommended toys on amazon.com/shop/SpeedySpeech with lots of related toys!

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před 2 lety

      Absolutely! Definitely if they are interested in letters what I usually do is hide the letters and come up with new play routines like “ oh no where is A? There you are letter A! I saved you!” And put it in the puzzle! and sometimes I create a obstacle course where they have to run through the tunnel and get each letter and crawl back through to put it in the puzzle and then go get the next letter!

    Please touch on how to
    get beyond " well it has to be his
    idea or he won't do anything".
    I don't understand that.
    Isn't the substance of the various therapies trying to help them to
    enjoy the interaction and initiate
    activities...as well as imitation, gestures
    etc so if we are waiting on them to have
    " the idea" we may wait till it's just too
    late !!!

    • @marshasobie643
      @marshasobie643 Před rokem

      The caregiver refers to " has to be his idea" often
      and the other day in speech therapy the
      therapist tacitly agreed ??
      It seems like a crutch for not successfully devising
      ways to entice and encourage more
      imitation, and productive actions.
      Just don't see any ways to move beyond aimless playing and begin to see
      some intention to this child's actions.
      He is 5 1/2 , has gotten early intervention
      since he was 2 and continuing
      OT and Speech therapy and attended
      pre K from age 3 and recently started
      Kindergarten but wasn't allowed to
      go to his district school due to their not
      having services to take him on.
      He has made very, very limited progress.
      Non verbal and very limited communication of ANY
      sort. No gestures, imitation, very few of the pre requisites to " talking".
      Some increase in attention span
      and eye contact. Any advice?
