I recognize that this video was posted almost 2 years ago but I thought I would add some thoughts since I just bought the 9000. I have a JVC X790R 4k pixel shifting projector. I had the Panasonic dp-ub820 and I moved that to pair with my Sony Z9D. I was not expecting much of a change because both players have the same video processing chip set but wow I was wrong. The audio quality differences during movie playback are astounding! Now I did expect some improvement in sound quality but the player far exceeded my expectations in that regard. But the video quality truly blew me away - the extra ability to adjust the HDR roll off by selecting the basic luminance projector made a huge difference - far more than I expected! And on the other side the 820 does a fabulous job in the room with the Z9D. I hope these observations help someone.
Thanks. Interesting about the sound quality difference you observed during movie playback since I thought the UB820 and UB9000 have the same audio components (chips, capacitors etc. for Blu Ray movie audio reproduction over HDMI? Would love to hear from others who have tried both the UB820 and UB9000 since I have not seen any reviews mention any audio quality differences over HDMI between these 2 players...
@@eurodudenj Yea, I wonder if its a placebo effect or whatever the psychological term is for this situation
I am picky and pay attention to sound and video.
I have oppo. Considering to sell oppo and go with this
Thanks for sharing, I want to ask about dual/triple layer disc playback. Do you get any freezes when playing these type of disk on the 9000 or the 820 panasonic?
@@nachowifi2181 it might be a placebo effect we always love what’s shiny and new
Excellent video SC, and what an amazing player! I just received it and hooked it up yesterday, and what a picture! I am using this amazing player paired with the equally incomparable LG C9 77 inch OLED TV which is a perfect marriage. I formally had the Pioneer Elite Kuro TV and have been using the equally great Panasonic VT-60 as my everyday TV for a few years now so as you can see, picture quality is my No. 1 priority. So far I've only had the chance to see one 4K Blu-ray (The "Shape of Water") and the immersiveness and color accuracy between player and television was (to me) the best I've ever seen. I may never leave my basement again!!!
Great review. I'm an anamorphic lens user with a scope screen and I recently purchased the Panasonic UB9000. I use the stretch mode through my projector, so not having the stretch mode function on the Panasonic UB9000 is not a problem.
its 2023 and im still loving mine
Excellent quality review, keep up the great work!.
Thanks!
Great video. I appreciate the detailed run-through on the settings. Very helpful.
Just incase nobody else mentioned this in the comments for you. You do actually get quite a comprehensive start up guide/paperwork with the player. 👍🏻👍🏻
Just ordered mine looking forward to enjoy thanks for sharing this video
Best 9000 review I have seen so far in youtube!
Was waiting for this review! I'm happy with my UB 820 though. Just wish it had the build quality the 9000 has
Great Video as always.Have been using the XBox one X for the last 6 months and have lost patience with their lack of Dolby Vision disc support.Have the UB820 on the way now based on your review which should arrive any day now.Cant wait to get my hands on it.
Thanks for your review
Had this one for over a year now. It was an upgrade from a Sony 4k player at around $250 ( which was actually pretty impressive) . There was a very noticeable difference in both picture quality and audio. I personally enjoy the audio upgrade more. It's more detailed and seems to hit a little harder. Currently connected to a Marantz SR8015 and a Sony XR950H LED.
Great reviews from this guy! 👌
Some say that as a cd player has harsh/fatiguing treble after some time?
@@andreassouth1523 optical to a dac might be possible. im in love with my denafrips dac if your listening to digital music i think they are an amazing purchase!!

Thank you for the video 🙂🙂🙂
Thanks for review !
I got this player from my Mrs for Xmas and it is still in its sealed box under the tree while I'm waiting for a 5 meter HDMI cable. I have a LGB7v so I'm not worried about the Netflix issue or the streaming store the tv has it all and works beautifully. It's for movies and audio CD for my hi end hifi... love the vid keep up the work... Happy New year from the UK.
Thanks! You'll love the player. Awesome picture quality.
let me buy it
Shane, excellent work! I watched your entire video and paused several times to confirm the setup selections on my new UB9000. My Panasonic player is connected to my LG C1 OLED via top-of-the-line Ultra HDMI cables, all routed through a newly acquired high-end Onkyo Receiver. The UHD-HDR discs are delivering the stunning visuals I anticipated. However, when it comes to standard Blu-rays, I've stumbled upon a peculiar combination of settings that's producing exceptional results, leaving me both impressed and puzzled. Following your instructions precisely, my UB9000 is configured accordingly. Here is the rub, while upscaling "Lord of the Rings" from a 1080p Blu-ray, with the player's picture mode set to "Fine Cinema" and my LG C1's picture mode set to "OLED Care Comfort," the result is an astonishingly clear, finely detailed image that rivals the clarity of 4K. It's a tiny bit on the blue side, but amazing. My research says that I shouldn't be combining picture modes in this way, but wow. Do you have any thoughts on this? Anything to share that might help me travel this rabbit hole?
I wonder when this player was actually released? Wondering if they are likely to release an updated model any time soon?
The ub 9000 is awesome. I have it connected to my LG CX 65" with LG SN11RG 7.1.4 sound bar system with Dolby Atmos and DTS-X and the ub 9000 decoded all the audio in the 4k blue ray movies. Im using 2 Monster 2.1 cobalt HDMI cords. The UB-9000 is nice.
When you stop it and after 20 minutes you start it again, does it start from the point of the movie where it stopped? or does it start again from the beginning of the movie? They say that the 820 can't keep memory and it starts from the beginning of the movie!!
I did get some paperwork with mine. But not the main manual, just a basic starter one, plus a couple other pieces. I think most of the electronic manufacturers are not providing main user manuals these days. But I would much prefer they did. I had to get the manual for my Denon X6400H printed and it cost me $67.00 at Staples. It was a large size though.
I have both the OPPO 103D and the Panasonic UB9000 for about the last month. I use the UB9000 most of the time. The OPPO is region free, which is great for us, as we have a lot of British Disks. I realize the 103D is not 4k, only Blu Ray. I will be keeping both.
Amazing. No plasticky stuff like Sony and Samsung. An actual display. Respect for us, consumers. Gonna give Panasonic a try this year. They seem so careful about their products. Even the TVs are beautiful.
Thanks for the great videos! What is the difference between the 9000 and the 820 for audio strictly through the hdmi?
this would be nice to know! I'm in the same boat - ordered the 820, it gets here Tuesday
This player is still a major contender for me based on:
- Balanced XLR audio outputs. In 2020 I 'upgraded' my audio gear from 5.1 to 2.0 differential Emotiva pre/power amps.
- Video quality and the video settings/options.
- It can be modded to play all DVD/Blu-ray regions.
- I can play SACDs and DVD-Audio with my existing Oppo 83. 👍
What's surprising is that there don't seem to be any new high-end 4K players coming out in 2021. Or are there?
Great video player review. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
There are a couple new high end DVD players out there but are already under the gun to be discontinued for various reasons. You can't go wrong with either of the Panasonics. I own the 9000UB but it's little sister is still pretty impressive for half the price. Don't know about the Sonys or the Pioneers but those brands are solid names in all electronic devices. I have an Elite Pioneer maybe 8 years old one of the first blue ray players. It loads really slow but sound and video are excellent still.
@@Mr.HotRod Magnetar 800 and flagship 900 have just landed. Oppo clones.
@@RodneyAllanPoeThat is one of the name brands I was trying to think of. I also heard they were having some minor or major troubles though maybe with getting certain parts. Only rumors that I happen to come upon.
@@Mr.HotRod Have not heard that. Testing this kind of hardware/software platform must be a nightmare.
Hi Shane! I love your channel and your reviews how do you like the player is there anything you think that Panasonic could have add to the player?
Hi - thanks so much for taking the time to put this video together.
I’m hoping that you could possibly assist?
I have a panasonic UB9000 on a JVC X7900 PROJECTOR. Blu-ray Disc/CZcams/ other local video apps- perfect picture. Everything EXCEPT Netflix! The colour when running the Netflix App is washed out☹️. I can adjust the projector colour/ brightness/ and contrast to improve the experience, but that ruins CZcams.
I’ve connected an Apple TV and ran Netflix with excellent results. So the issue is Netflix on the panasonic player. I doubt it’s a faulty unit.
My only solution is to permanently connect an Apple TV when using Netflix.
Do you have any ideas.
Looks great.
You can pick up the hdr optimiser whilst physically watching 4k/hdr content with this player. It’s not smooth in that sense. Going from dark to bright scenes and view Versa you can see the screen dimming or getting brighter rather abruptly. And the disc tray isn’t really all that silent at all. It’s quite some louder than my older Marantz UD7007. Which also had a rubberised disc plate which prevented the disc slipping upon loading inwards. The UD7007 would detect a misplaced disc and like an automatic door, would not close but reopen. Now I’ve not tried it, but I get the feeling this player would chew you’re disc in half.
Another great video Shane!!!
By the way is it worth the thousand dollars Shane?
Shane - How do you change the wallpaper on the home screen and what is the best file format?
Great review Shane! Personally I'll be sticking with my Oppo 203

As always another great review.
Do you think it will be possible in a firmware upgrade to add the 21:9 stretch feature??
I'm sure it would be. I doubt they'll do it though 😢
I sent Shane's video to the USA and HQ management with that suggestion. Stand by for their reply.
@@HDTVShootout 2 years later and still no reply
@@glennnichols4220 Sorry to say it's unlikely we'll get an upgrade to support a 21:9 button on the UB9000. I still have it on my list of requested upgrades.
Curious how this compares to the pioneer udp lsx500 (i think that was what it's called)
Good informative video, albeit skimming over the functions a bit too quickly, not giving enough time for the average user to fully take in what you're saying. Also nothing was mentioned about the HI RES streaming capabilities of this unit and how to use it I believe it has that feature as the logo is clearly printed on the box. Or maybe not? Would be nice to see and understand how to set up..
I had the same issues with the little brother player 820. I sent mine back for a replacement from crutchfield.
Freezing during playback dvds and blurays?Did you get a new one?Is it ok?
Very nice! How is Panasonic UB9000? Is it good as Oppo 205 player?
How does this compare to the Pioneer Elite LX-500 besides the built in apps?
On the back, do I hook up my HDMI into.the audio only or audio/video?
I have the 820 when watching netflix the player takes forever to to log into netflix. Not sure why but it cant take a few minutes after clicking on netflix button on remote. Any ideas why?
Getting one coming on Tuesday
Awesome. Let us know how you like it.
What HDR display type should I do for the Samsung RU8000?
How does the audio out optical/coax audio difference compare with dp-ub820? I will be using the audio out to connect to external dac and am wondering if the extra mony for audio worth it esp since the hcx processor is the same.
Panasonic can make some high end equipment. I still using my power amp from 1988.
I bought the UB-820 and its perfect for what I need and half the price
Is it working well without freezing during playback?
@@andreassouth1523 yes still no issues whatsoever, try updating your firmware
I definitely like the idea of having both HDR versions but unless you have a tv that plays both Dolby vision and HDR10+ you can only use one or the other which ever your TV supports. Not sure if there are any movies in HDR10+. I’m debating on waiting or getting it. My tv only plays Dolby vision and there might be better options. But I want to be future proof at the same time. Man by the time I get all updated to 4K stuff 8k will probably be going on to 10k or what not lol.
When you say this has more premier audio options then UB820 does that include better audio quality when watching a 4K movie or if you are just playing music through it? I have a NX7 projector I use this with.
Question: can I hook this up to my a/v receiver that does not support DV, but does support Atmos, and still get DV on my Sony OLED?
Great video! Was it able to play 4K 10bit mkv files?
Does this player play multiple regions? My gf is from new Zealand and when she comes over with some of her discs i wanna make sure we can watch them
Isn’t the same functionality available in the UB820? Is it worth adding either of these players to a JVC DLA-NX7 which already has dynamic tone mapping firmware?
We are out of Play Blu-Ray Devices here in physical stores in Brazil. Those from the oppo brand, we don't have them here. Almost all brands with the exception of SONY and LG, however all brands that produced Play Blu-Ray devices disappear from our physical stores here in Brazil.
Greetings,
How do you compare the Panasonic DP-UB9000 to the Pioneer LX-500?
hi i would like to know if option 21.9 for projectors is also in the model ub824 or only has the 900? , thanks
For 1080p.should I use rec709 or2020 for best color?
This is basically an OPPO 205 with a few differences, only one rear USB instead of two, but the drive tray looks like mine down to the logo on the front, good to know this is out there.
does the ub9000 encode all sounds like dolby digital plus and dts like the oppo or i need a receiver ?
I like the sound of this but some part scare me the pause thing the poor app running any chance of a 2021 update review with all the update fixes Please ?
7:50 - That's weird. On Netflix, both Atmos & Vision works but on Prime, only Vision works, not Atmos? Jack Ryan is supposed to be in Atmos & Vision. I watch it with Atmos activated on my Roku Ultra.
Running the OPPO UDP-205 so no plans to change BluRay/SACD player. Sound quality is through the roof.
Is the picture quality better than the CXUHD and if so how much, is it marginal?
have just update my ub9000 and it now will not play sacds lyer and or multi channel sacds ( audio cd ) played same sacd right before update , will now only play cd layer .
any help out there in regard set up or a fix still plays dvd multi channel .
thanks
Does this player have IP control, via a downloadable app, like the Oppo does?
Great review. I think I will stick with the UB820.
Yeah I just can't see ANY difference in picture quality with my UB820.
On the image front they are essentially identical, as their image processing components are the same.
More than happy with my Oppo 203. Good review tho.
Finally a review! Thanks Shane.
Now, I've had the UB820 since the end of the summer and I have experienced the same issues you mention, and some more.
I perceive the player to be very slow and unresponsive compared to the Sony BDP-S7200 I had before. Not only it is slow to start up, shut down and enter the main settings etc., it frequently freezes in different ways as well. For example, if you press the eject button the player remains unresponsive for a looong time, and sometimes, I just keeps on showing "Welcome!" and then "F99" a minute or so later while also sounding wierd. Ironically, the explanation for this error message in the manual is: "The unit fails to operate properly. Press [Í/I] on the main unit for 3 seconds to switch the unit to standby, then switch back on". Nothing about what causes the error.
Another issue is that I have had the sound disappear after having paused and resumed the playback of a UHD disc, not being able to bring it back without restarting the whole thing.
Another issue is that the preferred language setting for subtitles rarely works (if ever), and finding the right subtitles or audio track after having started a video requires that you enter the menu which is quite bad. The default luminance setting for UHD subtitles is also far too bright and completely destroys the experience. You have to lower it to about -7 to look OK. And the damn player does not remember the setting in between viewings!
Finally, I can't seem to get it to properly output Dolby Atmos. I don't have an Atmos setup, I have a 5.1 setup, but to my understanding, the Dolby Atmos signal will be decoded correctly by the receiver (Denon AVR-X2300W), which should show "Atmos". I should not have to choose another soundtrack. My receiver does show "Atmos" when playing a UHD movie through the Apple TV 4K, but not through the UB820.
In short, I expected more from a player at this price point. It is slow, buggy and poorly optimized.
An email has been sent to Panasonic engineers to hopefully address some issues. Thanks for the feedback!
@@therealshanelee Let's hope!
@@isak6626 So, were the problems addressed?
@@nebtheweb8885 some of it. There's no error message anymore and Atmos works fine. It's still slow, but I've gotten used to it, so there's no issue. Subtitle settings is still an issue, but on the other hand, streaming devices like the Apple TV 4K doesn't even let you set the subtitle luminance which can be an issue in certain dark HDR movies, so I still prefer the UB820.
@@isak6626 So 820 is better?Because iam planning to buy ub9000 next month!!With simple bluray discs and dvds any problem with sound when paused and resumed? When you stop it and after 20 minutes you start it again, does it start from the point of the movie where it stopped? or does it start again from the beginning of the movie?
I just received my Panasonic DP-UB9000EG1 and noticed that the main on/off button does not have any LED light, neither when it's on, nor when it's off. Is this how it must be?
All other Blu-ray players I own do have LED lights on their on/off main switch buttons, when on and/or when off.

Can you unit substitute for a dedicated high end cd player. I know its's dac are supposed to be really good and it has the dedicated hdmi audi out., which makes me think so.
Is there a way to listen to audio on this player while having the television off?
How is this compare to Sony x700 player? Noticeable or not really?
Hello, will Panasonic ( I have an Oppo 203) or a different brand release a new High End 4k ultra hd blu ray player soon?
Can anyone tell me if the 7.1 analog outs can be used for its DAC features? My AVR doesn’t have a DAC this good so I’d like to output the ub9000 to a 7 channel amp, can do or no can do??
Does it have HDMI inputs so can Roku or any streaming device play 4k hdr contents and benefits from downloaded hdr movies through usb port in an streaming device?
would you ever review the Pioneer Elite UDP-LX500 4k Blu Ray Player
Great channel! What are your thoughts if any on which is the better player between the Panasonic 9000 and the Sony 1100es?
Hands down the ubp 9000 is better than Sony's 1100es 4k player. Both in build quality, hdr optimizer presets, Dolby Vision auto playback and PQ DV playback, as well as on board amp to use with XLR inputs for powered speakers and PA speakers. It's relatively expensive and can be found for less than the $1000 retail price but when you have one you are pretty much set for 4K viewing all around.
I am a big fan of Panasonic products but the engineers of this product have made some major omissions Was going to get this but glad I didn't and went for The Cambridge CXUHD and love this machine even though it doesn't have analog outputs because I wanted a complete digital transport.
What was the major omissions?
Why when I try to look for the optimizer it won’t come out?
hello shane. will this unit play mkv files from the USb with dts hd ma and dolby digital..?
I just installed my UB9000Pk1 this evening, The Prime app will not output 4K HDR to my Sony A80J. 4K HDR programming is sent as SDR. I have similar issues with the Prime App on my Apple TV. Some combination of resetting the Apple TV or reinstalling the Prime App multiple times will restore HDR at least for a few days. What a pain!
For CD playback, how does this compare to a dedicated CD player such as the $300 Yamaha cd-S300? I could get the 820 for $400 and the S3000 for $300 and still have an extra $300 in my pocket.
Does this player support the ability to adjust the subtitle position, size, font, and brightness?
It does. Atleast position and brightness.
You can also get the lower models while keeping most of the quality and features, for around 300 you can get basically the same player without the analog audio and the fancy chassis.
Hi, can you tell me the models. Please
Not with Dolby Vision

Hello there! I know this is an older video but thought I’d try asking a question anyways. Do you recommend any specific hdmi cord or should any 2.1 hdmi do? Also should the hookup for this with a LGC1 and JBL 5.1 sound bar be pretty straight forward or is there anything I need to know. Thanks!
Any quality HDMI 2.0 cable will do. No need for HDMI 2.1 as it's not even needed.
Quick question, I’m new to the whole home theater game and was wondering when you mentioned the difference in audio, does the include the audio for movie watch or just for music play back???
For music
Can you compare this to the new Reavon x-200 ?
Interesting that one owner Randy Norris) here posted about dramatic sound quality difference he observed during Blu Ray movie playback via HDMI since I thought the UB820 and UB9000 have the same audio components (chips, capacitors etc. for Blu Ray movie audio reproduction over HDMI?

I have the UB-900, excellent player. I would keep it if they came out with a Dolby Vision firmware update, but doesn't look like that will happen.
@SpareChange hi and thanks for the video. I can confirm that when pressing the High Clarity button on the remote control twice while watching a disc i loose picture and have to stop the movie. Although i loose picture i still retain audio. My firmware is the latest as of 23/3/21. If anyone knows a fix for this please reply. Thanks
I have this 4K player. When I use Netflix the picture goes black for a second suddenly and then comeback to normal. Does any body knows a solution for this problem? Thank you.
Is there a huge difference between an XBOX One S/X?
So I’ve been looking for a dedicated 4K uhd player recently. Now, I have an Xbox one x currently, and it sends my audio bitstream to my AVR. Great! I get atmos and dts X etc. Now I’m all about fine tuning my audio, not so much video, if a 4K movie can look great on it it, or blow me away on it. Black panther and JW fallen kingdom are 2 that blew me away, how would I benefit from having a dedicated player? My option are between this and pioneers, LX500. Thank you👍🏻👍🏻
P.s face planted myself when I realised I hadn’t subbed. So sorry. Fixed that😂👍🏻.
Just setup my new Panasonic UB9000 on my LG OLED55C1. What an visual improvement from playing 4K Blu-rays on my PS5! Definitely worth the price!
Being able to use separate HDMI audio cable to my older Stereo receiver, provided a noticeable difference in sound quality too!

Did you compare this to the Pioneer Elite?
Is there any difference between this player and the 820 over HDMI?
@sparechange what advantages does this hold compared to the Xbox One X ? Thank you for your hard work and great videos. Happy New Year!!
Xbox one is a gaming system first and foremost. This player is designed for film playback so picture and audio is the first priority. If you care about movies and want the best image this stand-alone player will do it for you.
