      It holds some considerable nostalgia value for me, but purely as music I find that I can't really listen to most of that stuff nowadays (I'm 35 for reference). It's not music I would ever throw on just to listen to for like aesthetic enjoyment. Just doesn't do it for me. But yeah, definitely makes the nostalgia bubble up in a bittersweet way, so once in a blue moon I will play those old songs as a kinda detached trip down memory lane.

    I’ll tell you why Justin: big hooks, good vibes, a marriage of two huge genres that historically tend to compete with each other.
    For a lot of people that like classic rock, thrash metal, metalcore, punk. All of the rich and varied genres of rock music. Pop punk is the sub-genre that generates that triumphant, anthemic, party music for a significant chunk of this crowd. It’s a celebration of the wall of sound that full bands produce. It’s fun and easy to sing along to, like a lot of pop music, but with the stipulation that power chords and a full kit kick you through the song while you do.

    In fairness, the whole album is brilliant. Neck Deep just know how to write a good song without overcomplicating it.

  • @WilkesyBRAH
    @WilkesyBRAH Před 2 měsíci +3

    Neck Deep were one of the heads of the 2012-2016 kind of reblossoming of Pop Punk along with bands like The Story so Far, State Champs, The Wonder Years, Real Friends and Knuckle Puck, Tumblr and Twitter were big catalysts for it, especially Tumblr since it was where a lot of the kids who were seen as weird and grew up loving bands like Blink 182, Sum 41, Greenday, MCR, Fall out boy and the likes were hanging around.
    I think Pop Punk just gives a nostalgia kick paired with usually great music, a lot of the lyrics are usually based around what have become pop punk clichés (hating your hometown, girls and heartbreaks, good times with friends) but it also mixes so much from alt as whole, depending on the band you have influence from Emo, Metal, classic Rock, pop and even rap/hip-hop.
    It also really doesn't take itself serious a lot of the time, bands like Neck Deep were great at using this for marketing, some of the jokes that became synonymous with them were self-deprecating jokes usually taken from the consensus of gate keepers who hated Neck Deep getting big and would argue with Neck Deep fans about how they were shit, #GenericPopPunk was one of them, but the other famous one is probably Neck Deep are shit mate, Ben's dad owns a record label and they ended up being great merch designs which Tumblr pretty much advertised for them, at the time Neck Deep Generic Pop Punk and Man Overboard's Defend Pop Punk were probably too of the most reposted merch designs on that website atleast within the alt music space. It also really helped their second album, Life's not out to get you, is still seen as one of the greatest modern Pop Punk releases and is regularly put up there with releases from the classic gods of Pop Punk like Blink 182, Greenday, New Found Glory.
    Their numbers properly blew up during Covid though, when one of their songs off their 3rd album, that dealt with Grief went viral especially in the Phillipines, I think their numbers tripled, and have been steadily going up since, the song (wish you were here) also leapfrogged December which is a Pop Punk ballad about losing love and regularly sees a massive listener jump in the winter.
    It also helps they're really really good live.

    • @WilkesyBRAH
      @WilkesyBRAH Před 2 měsíci

      Also new wave emo/Midwest emo is seeing a similar hyper resurgence right now, with older bands like Modern Baseball getting new fans even 6-7 years after they broke up, and new bands like Hot Mulligan selling out shows all over the world, would be cool to hear you give Hot Mulligan a listen in the same vein as this one, this resurgence seems to mainly be stoked by Tiktok which I also see your clips on a lot!

    The godfathers of pop punk are the Descendents who formed in 1979 and dropped their massively influential album “Milo Goes to College” in 1981 and came up with bands like Black Flag. And even though they’re my favorite punk band, I would argue that The Ramones chronologically probably have them beat for adding a sense of pop melody to punk music. So my point is, you’re not too old for pop punk. It’s been around since the late 70s, even if the name “pop punk” didn’t exist yet.

    I was thinking you should react to them. I was specifically thinking their first single, "It Won't Be Like This Forever," from their latest self-titled record. I never heard of them prior to hearing this song. It's become one of my all-time favourite songs. So good. One of my resolutions is to listen to it everyday or the equivalent of everyday. I've heard a number of their other songs. "Dumbstruck Dumbf**ks" is another gooder.

    I am older geezer and I find that I really, and I hate admitting this like the pop punk feel. I think a better term for it might be hard pop. Garage band stuff with good vocals, although as old as I am, I can't keep up and have no idea what they are saying, I guess that hasn't changed much.

    I think like some people pointed out there's a familiarity or nostalgic feel to it. First thing I thought was that it reminded me a bit of Jimmy Eat World - The Middle. It doesn't really appeal to me (probably because I'm not big on pop in general), but each to their own.
    And yeah, Perth weather. A good chunk of desert goes through Western Australia. It's not fun, I remember. I'm in Melbourne - notoriously unpredictable weather, but much cooler overall. And I'll be at your show tomorrow night, can't wait! As a side note, I have an extra ticket if anyone's interested.

    A lot of the lyrics in pop punk are hugely relatable for many people because the songwriters in these bands have been through similar shit in their lives to the rest of us, so there's an emotional connection that resonates with the audience. The music is generally pretty basic and predictable compared to other rock sub-genres and that's how it should be - we already know what to expect and we enjoy that sort of familiar, reliable comfort. It's fun, energetic, infectious, inclusive, vulnerable, earnest, harmless, tasteful and we live for it!

    Pop punk has existed for 40s. Neck Deep has played festivals you’ve played at. I’m surprised you’re not aware.
    The term “pop punk” was used because Descendents were equally as influenced by The Beach Boys as they were by the Ramones during a period when hardcore was established as the punk norm (the ‘80s).
    Check out The Wonder Years. They were considered the leaders of the genre in the early 2010s and are an excellent live band.

    A lot of Punk has always had something of a Pop aesthetic. From the Dolls and the Ramones to the Pistols and the Damned to The Decendants and NOFX and all points in between, its marrying that raw emotional sound to hooks and melodies. The Clash included Reggae and Ska influences as well so its always been something of a melting pot.

    Justin, I'm fast approaching 50 and love Pop Punk. Yes even the new stuff. It's a large umbrella genre, not only this stuff but also some emo, easycore, post-hardcore, actual punk and metal are included. Neck Deep's 'The Peace and the Panic' is considered a modern classic of the genre. You should listen to my favourite song by them, Wish You Were Here, it's so melancholic it brings a tear to my eye. Another great song by them is called In Bloom. I love Pop Punk because precisely because of the clash - the harshness and the sweetness, there's so much misery in the world it brings a burst of joy into peoples lifes. Also it gets teens into playing guitar, which in my book, the world needs more of.

    As someone who became a teenager at the height of blink 182s fame, I really never cared for this style of music. I never thought about it but the “pop” side of pop-punk never felt like it was mentioned much. It always felt a bit like corporate counter culture. Sure the music was important but how you dressed and where you hung out at the mall mattered too. I also remember every studio in the area could make your band sound just like this.
    Funny enough, the darkness was one of the bands that gave me hope for rock and roll during this time period.
