Pearl Jam have returned with their new song Dark Matter. Producer by Andrew Watt, is this the best Pearl Jam have sounded or is it actually completely different to the usual Pearl Jam sound?

@justin. What’s the rarest, and hardest to find album you own? Many Yanks have no idea how deep the British prog genres (plural) are. And part 2 who is favorite American songwriter?
Grunge/Sludge, same shit.
i think the dudes from the South moulded grunge.
I like the song tho

Love that you wore a flannel to talk about this!
its prob the only clean shirt he had
@@mannyfragoza9652 He's not meaning the shirt
@@jasonjackson9714 doh
@@mannyfragoza9652no shirt or flannel was clean in the 90's - that was the point I think. Justin looks like he just bought his flannel for this segment. 😂

Great to see PJ still getting into it. Mike McCready is one of the most outstanding guitarists of the 90s. (And his stamina is even more amazing when you consider he’s been living with Chron’s Disease for nearly 40 years.)
Yeah but he stole my name. Changed the spelling. And put an Mc in front of it.
Lol.
Dark.
Matter.
Don't
Matter.
I forgive him for hoovering up half of Seattle's blow and not leaving me any to improve MY guitar playing 😮😅😢😂
I have lived with Crohn's (not Chrons) for 44 years and I can't even hold down a job. I'll have what he's having. 😂
Ive heard that Chron’s disease isnt just a bathroom disease. Is this true?
@@DanaONeillStuderdamn thats rough..hope you are doing ok
I saw Pearl Jam with Soundgarden open for Neil Young in 93. VIP lucky me.
Damn... cool dude!... I like that 3 combo... 👍🏻
When they were good
Amazing!
@@dwb1980 pity about all the indie shite since. Wish they’d stayed grunge.
Saw PJ around the same time in SF but Neil opened and Eddie was too wasted to do the show…he came out and did like 3 songs before disappearing. Neil came out and sang rocking in the free world twice with the band and that was about it. Huge disappointment and waste of money.
Im so glad you are reviewing my favourite band of all time. At last
ehhhh pearl jam stopped being interesting after the year 2000. You only need the first 5 albums TBH
@@MK-oz2lf Not to say they have nothing good on the entire first five albums, but I've cut it back to the first two and I'm certain I'm never going to expand back out. The first two albums and the song "Yellow Ledbetter" are all the PJ I need anymore.
@@MK-oz2lf Each to their own. No facts, just opinions.
Can't wait to see them in June in Manchester. Will be my 20th show (+ Eddie solo 4 times). Followed them from 10, first managed to see them in 2000 on Binaural tour.
I've been very lucky and I am grateful for my 50 odd shows. I've been to places I could only have dreamed of if it were not for pearl jam and the life long friendship a I made along the has been the best bit I have people I can call friends bin most European countries and USA. I have no chance of going to another show sadly but that's ok. Im contact and I enjoy watching others enjoy it . Have a blast
Pearl Jam is my youth ♥️ And I still love them and especially Eddie's voice. It's very unique and everything I like in a male singing voice. Great new song😊
Always was a toss up between him and Chris C.
And perfect when they sang together❤🖤
Dark Matter is to me the best new single PJ has put out in a long, long time. Been a fan since like 1992 and although I'm a bit of a 90s purist with the band and this new one really is pretty fun!
Is it really that good? I mean really? Compared to any single off anything preceding it? I think it's very average.
I think the second single "Running" is even better. 🔥🔥
Sorry to hear that. You should really open up... the musicianship and creativity of the 70's music is light years away from the 90's. And the 80's is just crazy all over the place.. and of course the 60's in many ways is the birth to everything after. Beside 3 or 4 solid years in thr 90's, most is suspect. No hate, im just another guy on the internet with an opinion.
@@Brian-qg8dg He didn't say anything about not liking music prior to the 90's.
@@G-Man01 Of course it is average, I have it as below average as an album. Industry critics are now controlled shills and so are many in the comment section. This explains the irrational orgasmic reception. We are not living in a time of legit media.
The only classic Pearl Jam thing about this is I can't understand what he's singing, but I like it
😂
Can't understand Hawkins singing.....or Cornell or Weiland or Cobain or Plant or Fogerty or etc. etc.
@@FeelItRising,
Fogarty, Cobain, and Vedder, I agree with.
The lyrics to this one are on iTunes.
good old Mumbles Vedder
Reading the lyrics has helped me pick up more of what is being sung.
Matt Cameron and his killer sounding drums straight out the gate
MFC
His recent solo record is pretty cool.
Wish Dave Abruzzese was back...at least it would groove like mofo. Cameron's fills used to make me sick now I just ignore it
Didn't take long. There's always one. About on par with fucking Star Wars fanbabies.
Move. The. Fuck. On.
Matt's playing is incredible on this song!!
Jeff ament is one of the most underrated musicians
Not on this song.
@@easypeasy2938 Cuz he's now properly rated? hahaha
Could the bass line be simpler? It could be a sampler as far as anyone can tell.
He's a hack. Total hack.
I love when you noodle out the guitar parts on the fly!
justin is given to fly
Has a Vs (Go/Blood/Animal) vibe ratther than what you might expect as the classic (Ten) PJ sound. It's cool but PJ usually have a hard and fast first single for new albums. We'll see what else they have to back it up. Looking forward to the new record.
Except not very good lol
Yeah, I hear some Vs vibes now, even though it feels way over-produced compared to those tracks.
Who said Vs. isnt a classic album?!?!?
Simply love this! Has inspired me to revisit all my old Pearl Jam albums which have been languishing in my collection for quite some time. Thanks!
Sounds a bit like I Love Rock ’n’ Roll at the start but loving it.
Haha I just wrote it sounded like Joan Jett before I saw your comment. At least I don't feel crazy hearing that someone else picked up on that.
I got a "Suck My Kiss" by RHCP vibe
Thought the same thing.
It’s all I think about as soon as the song plays haha.
This is the comment I came here for. I thought we were just gonna continue pretending like it doesn't 😆
This is a really good breakdown! I love you talking about how the notes work on some of the solo parts!
All I could hear at first was “I Love Rock n’ Roll”
Me too😂
yup
Ah ! That’s what it was , it drove me nuts trying to figure out which song that riff sounded like
No way, a rock riff sounds like another rock riff. You glorious bastard.
@@svo21 yeah well, they could have tried a bit harder to not have it sound like that very obvious riff but i guess that's good enough for you ol' sot
Awesome video. What great walkthrough. Loved it 🤙
I had the pleasure of seeing Pearls Jam at Finsbury Park 92 and then in 93 supporting Neil Young ( his backing band was Booker T & The M.G’s).. I guess I’m still stuck in the 90’s reliving the old days 😅 thank you Sir 🫡☮️✌️
Aye, I was at the Finsbury Park gig too… Great day! I remember when PJ came on, Eddie threw carrots into the crowd while saying “got some carrots for ya, help ya see Neil better”… Barking mad! 😂
Eddie Vedder, like Bono, is one of those singers despised by the newer generations, I guess. But even though he mumbles a lot and has his mannerisms, he’s a dan fine vocalist. Just listen to their version of Love Reign O’er Me, for example
Well said.
I grew up with my dad listening to Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in chains. Eddie Vedder is absolutely sensational and needs bubble wrapped, listen to hunger strike with him and Cornell it’s absolutely sensational
Bono us despised for many more reasons that generational music lol
What leads you to believe that Eddie Vedder is despised by the newer generation? Seriously wondering?
Yeah I thought that, never heard anything had about Eddie and I'm a wee bairn!
Another free-flowing and wholly organic breakdown of a new song. Great stuff! I find myself wondering how I've never seen you snap a string on that acoustic. Did I miss that episode or did it get edited out (NO!) or are those strings just unbreakable?
Upon a quick relisten-that song is 🔥
Good to see my absolute favourites getting covered here. Love the new song, guitar and drums sound incredible and eddie’s voice seems on good form. Very much looking forward to seeing them at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium in June. Should be a pretty epic evening.
Loving these breakdowns of tunes, funny as well. Good stuff! 🌍✌️🎸
Watching the video intro is like slipping on a lovely cosy pair of slippers ☕️
It looked like you were really enjoying working this song out and it was more of a challenge for you than normal which I guess is testament to them. My favourite band so stoked you reviewed it, loving your work Sir!
Would love to see you review a Personal Trainer song or Son Mieux

I've enjoyed a lot today's episode! The song, the flannel shirt matching it, the bandana, the reminiscence in the theme tune to old Pearl Jam stuff, the mini guitar tutorial between the song analysis...👏👏👏
I do so like me some Pearl Jam every now and again. Ten was a life-changing record in my high school years, I was in college when Lightning Bolt was released in 2013. I've really been digging this tune since it dropped!
Were you born when Ten was released?
@@silversun119 1994. Didn't hear Ten in its entirety until probably 2008.
@@drsmainemusicAmazing that an older album had such an impact for you. I am 20 years older than you, and Ten shaped my last high school years too
You have a lot of great insight into a lot of the music I love. I’d love to see you explore/discuss the harmonic relationship between the vocal and guitars or bass and how that builds a chord across the instrumentation of a track.
Also love the green flannel! I had the same thought as you when the song started. Wait, this doesn't make me think pearl jam at all. Seasons Beatings. I would love to hear that. I'm flashing to a Stanley Kubrik A clockwork Orange, a Sat night live sketch when Eddie Murphy did his In the neighborhood skit. Before Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall... That sort of feeling and tone.
Justin Hawkins, your are the man! Such a smart dude--Love your musical analysis and the fact that you can play almost any song by ear. I also love that you are a true fan of all kinds of Rock and Roll, and can maintain your objectivity when analyzing a new song, even if you are not a huge fan of the band!
I didn’t grow up listening to your music which is my loss. You are quite a talented person. I’ve seen quite a few of your live events recently and you are very impressive vocally. Wishing you much success in your second act.
Are you talking to Justin or Pearl Jam?

Enjoyed listening to this review! Will look out for more...
Great description of how harmonic resonance is used during a solo. Love your work
This grew on me. Good song. Interested to hear rest of album for sure.
Love Pearl Jam. Made up they have a new album on the horizon, I really liked their last album Gigaton.
First time watcher of your channel - and… my friend, you have a new subscriber. Really impressed with your insights into the musicality (shows your mastery) but also on the vocals. When you said that Eddie was struggling with that chorus but that it still embodied the spirit of being vulnerable in rock… man, that captures rock music! I mean, Eddie is 59 years old. I love that he is still putting himself out there. And trying that chorus (knowing he’ll have to sing it every night on tour) - that’s a rock star baby.
A video of yours about the band that changed my life forever
Pure bliss and the perfect way to end the evening ♥️
I love it. Killer opening riff.
Basic.
Because something simple (basic) can never be good…
Super basic, predictable, uninspired and trite. Sounds like a song written in 10 minutes.
Simple can absolutely be awesome. This just isn't one of those cases.
@@easypeasy2938 It kicks some major ass.
“What do you think I am, an Animal?” 😂
I’m really digging this song. It’s been awhile since I’ve had PJ song on repeat. \,,/ I’m drawn to both the music and lyrics. ..2FER!
Please play longer snippets of songs. Love your show☺
I love Pearl Jam. I've seen them 8 times. The most memorable time was the 1st time I saw them. It was August 1992, Lollopalooza 2 at Bicentennial Park in Miami. Why it was so memorable was the incredible line up ( PJ, Soundgarden, Ministry and the headliner RHCP, among others) and because we were hit by Hurricane Andrew a few days later, one of the most destructive hurricanes in Florida history.
Living in England I've been a fan since 91 but yet to see them live! 😂
Love PJ! Best live band ever (no offense meant Justin).
This song rocks, but the second single "Running" is even more awesome. 🔥🔥
The best take on this song...really appreciate your brake down. What I've always loved about Pearl Jam is all that is going on in the song. Spot on.
Nice one Justin. You nailed the New Pearl Jam song you featured on your Prog mate.
Always knew The Darkness were going to Break through into the Big Time.!! Kindest Regards Mick (Sunny Wolverhampton). 🙏🇬🇧🆒️🎸👍🏻😀
Vedder sounds young like you said he sounds rested. This tune is pretty heavy . PJ still making great music.
Loving this new PJ tune! Great review
I've just started taking guitar theory lessons and it's helping understand when Hawkins is breaking down the guitar parts and when he talks he lingo. I appreciate him breaking down the guitar parts like he does and he shows alternate voiceings that could have been used. Good stuff. And yea, I like the tune, it is Rock N Roll baby.
It's awesome! Eddie's voice is sounding much smoother than it has in a long time and, like you say, younger as in the TEN era. This is going to sound amazing live👍
Eddie Vedder sounds great lately but I'm not taken with the material.
He was way better in St. Paul last year than when I saw them in Montana in 2018. Glad he's back strong.
Taylor is being nice. You all are misreading his commentary. When he is saying “younger” it essentially means “amateur” cuz that’s what it sounds like. Don’t believe me? go back to some of the original live “in stores” where Vedder needed no mic and absolutely crushed. Unfortunately that is not the case these days. If you believe anything else, you are lying to yourself
Who is Taylor?
Thrilled to see this video drop just in time for us lunatic ten club members getting our tickets - a fine way to celebrate
You were right unison notes in the main riff. It’s sounding like that because Jeff Ament is playing his 12 string bass (made famous on Jeremy)
Love it all, cant wait for the shows
This man wears expertise so lightly I feel imposter syndrome just watching his videos. Insightful, educational, and eloquent. I never associated wtih The Darkness' music, but this CZcams channel is fantastic for anyone who loves rock music and wants to know why.
Justin should totally write a song called Seasons Beatings
One of Mike McCready’s best solos in a looooooong time.
He had some killer solos in the last album. I wonder if it's a long time you've heard him play or if you just did not like the recent stuff.
Thank you Mr Hawkins for your incredible insight. I love Magical Eddie's velvet grizzly pipes. Just bought tiks for Pearl Jam in Oz This November. Saw first Aussie tour. Gonna be awesome ❤
Well carved up! Good little watch that. Most enjoyable, thanks Justin
Has a Soundgarden vibe for sure.
Agreed, that was my immediate thought. But Vedder is no Cornell as much as I love them both.
Yeah, bit Soundgarden-y, bit RATM as well with that opening riff and tone.
That'll be the Matt.
They are at the core of my both my music life and my daily perspective of being alive.
Damn. Hope they never let you down 😐
Same here. But they have let me down before several times but still love em. This song is pretty average

Love a bit of Jam…🎉,again!!!!😅
Pearl Jam’s music is always good. I like what they’re doing with this new song.
I saw Pearl Jam at Leeds Festival once, they were great!
Andrew Watt did last years Iggy Pop : Iggy and the Losers. He also did Glenn Hughes : California Breed and was the guitar player on the album and in two live shows they didd. I saw the one in NY (2014)
@justinhawkinsridesagain, I àm an animal.. Is it possible that your guitar is actually detuned to E flat? So your capo brings it back to E ;-). Love your videos/podcasts, big fan!
I really like this song. You can tell it’s Pearl Jam but to me, it sounds like they have been influenced by the cure. Like when the cure did fascination street. There is a lot going on in the song, but I think it works well. Matt’s drumming is awesome and the layering of guitars is really good too. I’m looking forward to their new album.
Well, season beatings IS a thing around Easter in some countries, or used to be 🙂
Go PJ and EV! Can't wait for the latest album - I always think they release the most rockiest songs as singles but they're never the best song - just the loudest to get your attention, but the best are usually around 3 or 4, or 8 to 10/11. In any case, all songs deserve a listen, but some sound a lot better over time, like wine, but also they need a few listens to understand as well. Each album is very unique - always love the art! Long live PJ!
Sounded like I love rock n roll at start
Yes, Joan Jett straightaway.
Not a PJ guy, but it rocked more than their usual stuff.
Respect, saw the “is it good or bad” and thought ugggg. Tired of judgements on just about everything. Passed the video several times. Went back to once I was more awake. Love what you did with it!! Thank god you went with observations. ;).
Seasons beatings as a Christmas song, haha love it, bring it on mate! With an appropriate angle of course..
Justin just casually figuring out PJ solos on acoustic like it's nothing! this is why I get all of my musical opinions from Justin these days, he has an opinion so I don't have to!
I think the mix is interesting...apparantly it was Serban Ghenea. One of the best mixers in the world but known as a pop mixer (Taylor Swift, Imagine Dragons etc.) Sounds huge but very polished which is a bit different for Pearl Jam. Pretty cool though
Yeh its very slick. Enjoyed it though
What a wonderful masterlass in songwriting, production and music history! Love it!
I had a record store friend I'd see once in a while in Vancouver in the late 80's up to around 1990 0r 91. The guy and I would talk music and guitar. I'd see him from time to time. He'd sometimes drive up early in the morning and essentially be one of the first guys in the store.
That was Mike McCready.
I haven't seen him in a record store ever since. Nice guy back then and before the fame and fortune.
Still a nice guy... and you'll find him around the record stores and shops in West Seattle and Downtown area of Seattle!
I don't doubt it. When 10 came out I thought it was a decent record. When I saw their first video I thought....wtf...is that record store Mike from Seattle?
I had a buddy (Paul K) who worked at music bank. I brought a guitar down there to jam out. AIC were down the hall. Layne was living there I think. Jerry too.

Really? Apparently you've never heard of the Rolling Stones. Rare for an old band to rock? Tom Petty was rocking right up until his unfortunate passing on.
