      Throughout history, it's been common for teams to be in a position to win the league, and then capitulate (often much more dreadfully than Liverpool this season). Arsenal's end to last season was a lot worse. 2013-14: Liverpool won 11 games in a row to put themselves on the brink, and then, having done the hard part, had that dreadful home loss to Chelsea before surrendering a 3-0 lead against Crystal Palace. 1995-96: Newcastle were 12 pts ahead (or 9 with a game in hand) after 25 games, and had only dropped 15 pts all season at that point, but then dropped 17 pts from their next 8 games. 1994-95: Blackburn dropped 11 pts from their last 6 games, but Man Utd also dropped enough pts to let them still win the league by a single point. 1992-93: Aston Villa were 2 pts ahead of Man Utd towards the end of March, and then lost 4 of their last 8 games. 1988-89: Arsenal were 14 pts ahead of Liverpool (after the same # of games) at one point in February, but were still 3 pts behind entering the final game of the season, in which Liverpool, just needing to avoid losing by 2 goals at home, lost by 2 goals at home. 1986-87: Arsenal were 3 pts ahead with a game in hand in Jan, and then took just 4 pts from their next 10 games, and Liverpool were then 3 pts clear with a game in hand in mid/late-March, but then lost 4 of their next 5 games and finished 9 pts behind minnows Everton. 1983-84: Man Utd were top till the 31st of March and had just beaten Arsenal 4-0 and overturned a 2-goal deficit to beat Barcelona in the QF of the Cup-Winners' Cup, but then took just 8 pts from their last 10 games and finished 6 pts behind Liverpool, who themselves only took 11 pts from their last 8 games. 1981-82: Man City were top at the turn of the year, but only won 5 more games and finished 10th with a -1 goal-difference (and got relegated the following season ... happy days). 1980-81: Ipswich had lost only 2 of their first 32 games, were top with games in hand and on course for a treble of league, FA-Cup and UEFA Cup, but then lost 7 of their last 10 league games (to finish a point behind an Aston Villa team who themselves only won 2 of their last 5 games), and also lost in the cup SF to minnows Man City. 1974-75: Everton were top with games in hand, and then only won 2 of their last 10 games and finished 3 pts behind a Derby County team who were 4th with 2 games to play, but who finished top after merely drawing their last 2 games (because Liverpool and Ipswich also dropped pts in their final 2 games). 1973-74: Leeds were unbeaten after 29 games in late Feb, and 4 wins ahead of Liverpool, but then lost 4 of their next 7 games so that Liverpool were in a position to win the title if both teams won all their remaining games, but then Liverpool actually only won 1 of their last 8 games. 1972-73: Liverpool only won 3 of their last 7 games, but still won the title, because Arsenal only won 1 of their last 6. 1971-72: Derby only won 3 of their last 6 games, but still finished a single point ahead of 3 other teams (Liverpool, who failed to win both their last 2 games, and Leeds, who only won 4 of their last 8 games, and Man City, who only won 3 of their last 8 games).

    Alice. i appreciate your videos. But I can tell you as liverpool fan.
    a) FSG dont care about trophies, but they very much care about top 4 (or 5) due to UCL revenue. They run a self-sustaining model (that which sustains the club and themselves).
    b) Consequently, they need to appoint a good coach but only just enough, which means that if Liverpool are in top 4 and need one or two big name signings for title, invariably they will tilt towards cheaper signings. In that sense, Arsenal management have backed Arteta better. They still went out and spent (~200M for Rice, Havertz) when they fell short last year. Ofcourse, the downside is they were walking a tight rope on FFP.
    c) Till now, Klopp has and from now on Edwards will to some extent paper over FSG's cheapness, however, to what extent remains to be seen.
    d) Arne Slot from his personality looks like an opportunistic manager. He is excited about liverpool, but does he stay and rebuild like Klopp, if things go against him. People forget the state Klopp is leaving this team.
    I am not saying this because of the disappointment of Klopp leaving. It is just the sad reality that has always been will now come to fore.

    • @nghianja
      @nghianja Před 21 dnem +1

      Shouldn't all clubs be self-sustaining? If not, a lot clubs would have gone out of business. And with the league talking about implementing a transfer and salary cap based on revenue, LFC might be in better stead than others with this model. They just need to continue winning bit by bit to pull in more revenue without spending obscenely big.

    • @sachinshah4594
      @sachinshah4594 Před 21 dnem +1

      Nonsense that FSG are cheap. Ever since Edwards left, the management of recruitment/transfers by Klopp and his pals has been bad. FSG have always supported Klopp in terms of funding.
      1. Michael Edwards wanted to replace our ageging midfield with Bruno G. and Enzo. Klopp chose to extend Henderson & Milner contracts and got his wish. Nobody was talking about lack of funding then.
      2. In the past 2-3 seasons, Klopp has spent -
      Nunez -80m
      Gakpo - 40m
      Szobo - 70m
      Diaz - 40m
      Grav - 40m
      Macca - 35m
      It isn't FSG's fault that klopp doesn't know how to recruit players.
      3. Last season Klopp and his friend Jorg wasted the whole summer window despite knowing that we desperately need a top no.6 and even more so after Fabinho left. How did they manage this situation? Waited till the last minute to bid for Caicedo (at the point where his head was already at Chelsea) and then tried to save a few million quid on Lavia. In the end had to panic buy the backup (Endo) and thank god it worked else we would be royally screwed. Because of how bad they handled this situation we now have to waste Maccalister at 6 at times when he is actually more effective up front.
      4. Also, a waste of 40m on Gravenberch the bench warmer when we already have many players who play that position. These funds would have been better utilized for a top no.6 (Palinha was available till the end of the window) and now this will pain us through FFP.

    • @gokulkrishnan5957
      @gokulkrishnan5957 Před 21 dnem

      @@sachinshah4594 Nuisance when half-baked truths are spurted around. The more annoying thing is more people actually get on this band wagon.
      FSG are cheap or thrifty (use your word of choice). But the bottom line of spending not more than ~50M from their cash reserve is a recurrent theme. Their spend might be higher - most of it recouped from player resale.
      "Michael Edwards wanted to replace our ageging midfield with Bruno G. and Enzo. Klopp chose to extend Henderson & Milner contracts and got his wish. Nobody was talking about lack of funding then."
      A lot of liverpool fan channels were talking about it then too. You cant just make blanket statements and claim that to be true. There was clear callout for ball-playing midfield then as most of them were just pressing/hard-working players - Fabinho/Henderson/Milner/Ox. Besides extending a contract is way cheaper than buying new players. So, it is not really a valid argument. However, it is true that Klopp insisted on these changes. Jorg did screw it up. Trying to go after Caicedo was a ploy to shoo off Boehly. Many senior journalist believe that it. The real screw was Bellingham saga. Penny-pinching for Lavia is also reflection of how FSG transfer committee conduct their business (not just Jorg).
      2023 summer:
      In: Macca (35M), Sobozlai (60M) Ryan (37M) and Endo (17M)
      Out: Keita (Free), Ox(free), Bobby(free), Henderson (16M), Fabinho (42M)
      Net spend: ~60M (note Sobozlai fee are to be paid over installments 30M upfront).
      2022 summer:
      In: Nunez (78M)
      Out: Mane (34M) Origi (free)
      Again, Diaz transfer was around (52M) not 40M and has been split over 5 yrs of payment. Gakpo is 34M.
      You can question Klopp and Jorg about recruiting. But it is tangential to the point that has been made. It is about FSG's inclination to spend. Amiron was highly rated by Edwards even when Alonso was being linked. But the transfer broke down because Amiron's system is different and there would require to sell and buy so many players. Something FSG dont want to afford.
      @nghianja What should be and what is are two different things. Imposing a spending limit now when you've let one club get away with it is still giving unfair advantage to that one club that got away. So it is more favoring man city than any other club.

    I am not quite sure about who I should really be listening to...
    Some of the British football pundits are saying things like they aren't really sure about Slot because he's come from a relatively weak League in the form of the Eredivisie, and some rival fans are even being as bold as to forecast that Liverpool will struggle to make the Top 4 as soon as Klopp has gone.
    While some Dutch sports journalists are forecasting that Slot will win the Premier League with Liverpool by 2027 or 2028.
    One former player of Slot's who has also played under Ten Hag has gone on record as saying that Slot is a much better communicator than the Manchester United manager.
    Others can understand why he was so keen to join Liverpool and why he rejected Tottenham.

    • @redshift8302
      @redshift8302 Před 21 dnem

      I'm more worried about the owner's decision making process and the consensus that Michael Edwards can do nothing wrong. I was against giving Salah what he wanted two years ago, and the last season and this one hasn't changed my mind with hindsight. He was supposed to drag Liverpool to win major trophies, as a world class player but Liverpool only won the Carling Cup. His scoring tally which makes his staunch supporters sing his praises masks the fact that his conversion rate is very low.
      As for Edwards he supposedly pulled a masterstroke by selling Solanke for 19M but it seems he was on the contrary a good catch for Bournemouth, and we could would have been grateful to have him at the club. It might seem that I'm saying this with the benefit of hindsight, but I thought he had a future at Liverpool 3 years ago, he is tall, strong and athletic and has a good attitude, at the very least I would have expected Edwards to put a buy back clause when he was sold to Bournemouth.

    I’m impressed by the video. You did your research. Liverpool is getting the best coach ever from the Netherlands. Forget those guys like de Boer en ten Hag. Slot is the opposite. 3 years, 3 differents selections and teams, 3 years of getting the most out of a squad. New generation intelligent man manager. I think he’ll wrap you guys around the finger in a few weeks or so. Dominated most CL games this year but didn’t capitalize on it.
    I hope he won’t make the same mistake as a lot of coaches though. Don’t bring in your Feyenoord players. I do think Hancko and Geertruida have the potential to be valuable players for the Reds, however dont think they will get a lot of time to adapt to the PL.

    Would like to praise You for Your many good vidoes and analyses. The season ended with a awhimper and looks like "115 charges city" will walk away with it. It was a good ride but maybe we deluded ourselves. Having changed so much personnel from last 2 seasons we are very much in transition so shouldn't maybe have expected this exciting ride, while it lasted that is.

    Crying out for 2 years to get a top injury free CB. First thing Edwards does on his return is focus on getting one. If we manage to get a world class no.6 and a versatile forward, we'd be really strong.

    Brilliant analysis.
    Pacho would be the ideal central defensive reinforcement we need, like you say we need a guy that can put the lid on those early goals LFC have been beset by this season.
    I would like Weiffer. He would literally be a Fabhino replacement.
    Up front I’d like Summerville over Neco Williams.
    If Edwards pulled off a Wirtz like signing, that would be the icing on the cake. But highly unlikely.
    I do feel that one of our front 5 needs to go. It needs a shake up, let’s say a refresh.

    Fabinho was a player most that just appeared. Nobody knew he was coming. It was announced and we was like, who is this guy. Probably one of the most important components in the klopp era. His ability and Hendo's leadership are what's been sadly missed. The issue with the transfer strategy we have. We ship out experienced leaders because of the age. Should of let thiago go and kept Hendo or Fab one last season. As rebuilds go we were written off before we kicked a ball.

  • @jonathanbowling1900

    Center back will defo be a priority with Matip leaving in the summer also Virgil is 33 now and a year left so questions mark over is future also Joe Gomez future maybe unclear to. So potential we could see center backs arrive.Hancko looks a very good player and as worked under slot also Geertruida looks likely to join and can play both Right back and Center back looks suited to the prem and at 25M is a steal. Out of the attackers you have listed would love see Bakayoko come to us can play both wings is numbers are impressive and is price tag is not to much but Nico Williams would be amazing and my number one pick.Midfielders would like either Wieffer or Hjulmand both be well suited to our team and to slot. Also like see if rumours are true Koopmeiners to be signed can play a few posistions and is stats are impressive. We defo need atleast one center back maybe two, possible two midfielders, understudy to Salah and possible a left back upgrade for Tsimikas.

  • @mavida2544

    I think Nunez gets another chance to prove himself under arne, but Gakpo has given a really good account of himself and I think he starts ahead of Nunez, unless Nunez steps up. I think Salah leaves if a good offer comes in, Trent may be gets a change in playing position, given that arne has proven to do that with players and defence isn't really trent's strong suit. Jota is a tricky situation because he is a really good player, but has a really bad injury record, 51% chance he leaves. So with Thiago, Matip and Adrian leaving, Nat, Williams, Salah, carvhalo, tsimikas, Jota potentially leaving. I think Liverpool will be bringing in a winger, cdm, leftback and centre back

  • @Alex___Scott
    @Alex___Scott Před 20 dny

    I was interested in Geertruida. Feyenoord captain, last year if his contract and can play left back, centre back, right back and CDM so versatile. Him and Guehi are in the last year of their contract. Zubimendi would be the rodri type player we need as a 6 and Williams. That's around 160m all in and I feel they'll get the likes of Tsimikas and Phillips gone this summer for around 20m all in and then the wages well save from them, thiago and matip surely fsg throw a good bit of money for Slot

  • @Undertow_999
    @Undertow_999 Před 21 dnem +1

    I love the video and analysis but Elliot is the most inconsistent Liverpool player(and should be sent out on loan or something)
    Mo is definitely leaving. It’s 80% sure that his career will come to end at Premier and continue at Saudi. Why? The issue here is with Diaz and Nunez who are missing so many opportunities and not scoring at crucial time and everything falls on Mo ,it is so frustrating; before he had Mane and Firmino but those 2 just can’t score(Salah still has his stats and goals but he’s so frustrated) I’ve been Liverpool fan for 4 decades and watched almost every game I’ve never seen anything like this duo Nunez /Luis. Just check out Nunez and Diaz missed opportunities; if they realized some of them Liverpool would be still on top fighting for the title. Stay safe all and cheers from Bosnia. God bless and I’m sorry for my English it’s not my native language.

    Liverpool's new midfield is technically very good but we still lack athletic ball winning capabilities. That's why I still think Manu Kone and/or Khephren Thuram would be good additions. We were linked with both heavily last summer.
    Endo is a top player but he's no spring chicken and frankly he's not the most athletic ball winner but has other major DM qualities.

    Musiala is a must for us and maybe move diaz on as he has no end product. Move trent into midfield and get a class tall rightback that can dominate at corners.
