  • Controlling the body's 'fat thermostat', also called the Body Set Weight (BSW) is the most important factor in how to lose weight. If your body set weight is set at too high a body fat percentage, then any attempt to lose weight will result in the body trying to regain weight by increasing hunger and decreasing caloric expenditure. Therefore, it pays to focus on how to adjust the body set weight. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

      Watched it and I couldn't agree more! 25 years ago I needed to lose 25 lbs and joined a well known Weight loss company. I lost the 25 lbs. but even more valuable I learned about my relationship with food AND to eat 3 good meals a day. That has stayed with me and to this day I rarely snack. I have learned so much from your videos in the past couple of years about how food impacts the body. Eating healthy and how that impacts health. I am a senior and on no medications because of my dietary choices and walking close to 8000 steps a day. I am slowly getting down to my ideal weight in a healthy way understanding food and its relationship to food. Thank you for your videos.

      I am so sad. Something's wrong with me.
      I stayed off sugars in totality both from refined carbs and fruits.
      I ate only leafy greens and mutton for 2 weeks straight. With intermittent fasting of 14/10. I had to eat as early as 8 or 9 am because I have ulcers. This Ulcer doesn't allow me to do water fast. So I have to eat just leafy greens with meats, not fatty meats even. Plus taking Orlistat everyday even when I don't eat all the time. No SUGAR at all. Yet I only lost 1kg. In two weeks. Somethings definitely wrong with me. I need help. Before I go crazy. I visit the gym at least 3 times a week and do moderate intensity cardios as I have no much strength for heavy workouts due to not eating carbs. I don't feel hungry, I feel ketones in my system. But I am not burning fat at all. I am frustrated. Seems like all my efforts are in vain. I need help. What is wrong with me??.
      I currently weigh 110kg, now 109kg after all these. I did a fasting lipid profile, my total Cholesterol was 4.0mmol/L. Triglycerides was 1.7mmol/L. Yet the weight just refused to come off. What else should I do??

    Listening Literally saved my life. I was too late learning. I learned how to reverse my type 2 diabetes and lowered my A1C from 15 to 5.7! My blood sugar was 500 and is now 120 average after a meal and fasting at 90ish.
    It didn’t matter though because I started getting chest pains.... went in to the hospital and had a quadruple bypass. Its because I reversed my Insulin resistance that made the surgery more effective. 10 Doctors came into my room and many others asking “HOW DID YOU DO THAT?” I explained it like I was Dr. Fung! I think I broke knowledge on them!....... :) It’s been 5 months out and I feel fantastic, I intermittent fast 18:6 and eat zero sugar and eat carbs minimally. I fast for 3 days once a month. (Learn how to break your fast) and started the gym on the weekdays and do 30 min cardio and I hr weights. Off on the weekends...I’ve lost 60lbs and will continue my journey. @maltheopia Před 2 lety +4

      If you're eating carnivore, be really careful about polyunsaturated fats that don't come with Omega-3s -- mainly from grain-fed pork and chicken. Too much linoleic acid without stearic acid to counterbalance it can lower your TDEE by as much as 400-500 calories as your body fat becomes PUFA-dominant and puts your body into metabolic torpor. If you're eating mostly grass-fed beef, organ meats, dairy, fish, and crustaceans you don't have to worry about it too much. Or if you're lucky enough to get your chicken and pork raised without grains/seed oil.

    • @maltheopia
      @maltheopia Před 2 lety +4

      @@gloriamaryhaywood2217 I'm not a nutrition scientist, I just find the topic fascinating. TDEE = total daily energy expenditure, in other words how many calories your body uses a day on everything.
      I haven't been able to measure my sedentary TDEE lately, but since cutting down on polyunsaturated fats about six weeks ago and supplementing with stearic acid -- while already on OMAD/rolling 72h+ fasts for 3+ months -- my body temperature has risen from around 97.5F to 98.0F and I can feel rested off of 6/6.5h of sleep instead of 8. Which indicates to me that my body is coming out of torpor and my TDEE is increasing.

When I was 36 and first diagnosed I weighed around 205 pounds and over the ensuing dozen years or so I reached 235 pounds. The other thing that increased over those years was the insulin I was injecting. Finally a couple years ago I decided to do some thing “radical” and go on a low-carb diet. Two big things happen with that, one my blood sugar was much more regulated and two I lost a significant amount of weight. Now for the last several months I’ve also incorporated intermittent fasting and reduced my insulin intake to 1/3 of what I was taking before and I have gotten down to 195 pounds. This video Dr Fung talks about how I went about losing fat and weight. Truth is I never concentrated on losing weight at all, I hardly ever weighed myself. What I did do was concentrate on things to bring my insulin down, I was insulin resistant and prediabetic with belly fat and overweight. So my main concern was to bring down my insulin. The first thing I did was change what I ate, I pretty much was on a carnivore diet (high fat, low to no carbs). Secondly I stopped eating all the time, I did this by eating once a day. My insulin levels started to drop substantially, so did my A1C. Working at bringing my insulin down also brought my blood sugar down reversing my prediabetic state. Now the side effect of that was weight loss and the loss of my body fat, I have a 0.8 waist to hip ratio now and loss over 40 pounds. I concentrated on bringing my insulin down and reversing my insulin resistance, the other things fell in line as a result of me fixing my insulin resistance problem. I went from pushing 200 pounds at 5'7" to now weighing a stable 140 pounds. I still eat a carnivore diet for the most part and I still eat only once a day. Oh, I almost forgot, I also incorporated walking, I walk 6 miles a day 6 days a week. I use one day as a rest day. That's how I did it, Dr Fung is absolutely right on this, I have no doubt that's for sure. I'm healthier now than I ever was, it just took a lifestyle change.

I have a bowl of pho about once a quarter, and if I do that, I'm out for a _long_ walk immediately afterward and a few times the next day, just to burn all those carbs out of my system ASAP.
      Mostly, I've trained myself not to eat sugar and grains or seed oils at all. The tougher struggle has been "keto" treats, nuts and cheese. Basically, I'm at a place where I have to dial back the fat.

      I find many of the others hit and miss, and there are a few who just come across as either "monetizers" or "everything is borrowed from someone else." Some of these are high profile, like one who calls himself Dr Z.
      PS: As for the doctor, I found mine mostly unhelpful. He actually MENTIONED low carb, which is why I looked into it, having already heard of it, but I ended up firing him over "standards of care." I'm now seeing a GP that's a low carb diet specialist.

    He is putting the right words to the thoughts I've had for a long time. As a long-time obese person, I lost 75 kilos (half my body weight) counting calories. worst 2 years of my life, I might add. I have always told people that tell me it's just about willpower to stay on that lower weight. I have always had that "feeling" that my body works against me, and wants to go "back" to the high weight I had. After trying to maintain my lower weight for a year and a half, I could still not eat more than 1400cal a day WITHOUT gaining weight. If I ate more, I gained weight. I got so tired of being low on iron, b12 and feeling like my brain was "mushy", that I decided to eat 1700-1800 calories a day from then on. My brain felt clearer and had more energy ofc, as I got more nutrients "naturally", and I didn't need b12 injections or iron anymore. BUT boy did I gain weight. Yes I did..slowly but surely weight came back on. and I told people: I am SO sure that my body wants to go back to where it was, and is sucking up every.single.calorie I eat to achieve that. There was no other way for me to explain why I ate the same amount of calories as another family member of similar size and age, and they did NOT gain weight, but I did. This just confirms what I have been conviced of last few years. I wish more doctors would educate themselves. I still hear my doctor tell me: eat many small meals a day. I have been living ketogenic diet last 3 years (with a break in the middle, where I gained weight AGAIN), but am now back on it. THANK YOU for putting words to my personal experiences.

      @lepetitenellie Před 2 lety

      @@Iamkim968 First 3 days of intermittent fasting is always tough after falling of the wagon. Especially if you’re living with family. Pre-2020 I did every other day intermittent fasting, still ate massively and went to the gym pretty much every day. Then boom, pandemic, forced to work remotely and I kept snacking nonstop out of stress. Just a week before our office shut down, I got a new position at work with bigger responsibilities. Training remotely sucked but I kept telling myself not to complain because I asked for more responsibility in the first place and I wanted to work a step closer to executive level. And of course there was so much awfulness going on in the world. So I just kept eating, ordering take out, no exercise and waiting for news that we can go back to the office and to gyms. My brain let the months pass hoping things will get back to normal soon and not accepting that I have to adjust. I mean seriously, remember how many times our hopes were risen month after month? Weeks of awful news stories. My God, remember the elections?? (shudder!) I cried every day I signed off from work because my boss was SO BAD at training remotely and I was training someone super incompetent for my old position. I kept making mistakes in my new position and my replacement kept making mistakes that I had to go in and fix. Thankfully my boss knew my replacement wasn’t up to par and she admitted she was not training me properly because she herself was overwhelmed, but the mistakes were still things I had to deal with. It was months of this. One day I got on the scale and found myself at 198. Wearing nothing but pajamas made me not be aware of my growing size. But more than anything I needed to get better in my new position because of so many high-level deadlines coming up. A few months ago after I recovered from my second vaccine shot, my brain finally caught up to reality and I found myself doing well in my work schedule. I decided to truly do Intermittent Fasting and add exercise. I am now doing two-sessions-a-day moderate exercise for five days a week (like walking for just 20 minutes twice a day with hand weights choosing streets on hills or doing two short exercise videos from CZcams twice a day) and intermittent fasting for 6 days with one cheat day (not giving up my weekend brunch of waffles and syrup!!!). In a way I am just doing probably 65-75% effort for both diet and exercise combined but I am down roughly 12 pounds. I find myself some days I only eat one gentle meal a day now (like salmon and big portion of veggie stir fry) and I am fine, compared to the beginning of intermittent fasting where my stomach kept gurgling and I needed more carbs. Hey I’m human and I’m a massive foodie so obviously I fall off the wagon some weeks. But I can now jump back into intermittent fasting 16/8 a lot more easily. For you, I recommend doing shorter intervals in the beginning like 12/12 and work your way up to 16/8. Even before my vaccine shots, I did a gentle start of 12/12 with just one 20 minute walking session for 3 days a week. Some days I just walked in place while watching an episode of a sitcom. Do 12/12 for the first two days with a HUGE long meal of any kind of food. I know that goes against logic but eating a big meal helped for me in the beginning adjustment phase. But always discipline yourself to exclude alcohol as much as possible and always include something fiberous prepared in any style in your eating window like a serving of broccoli or quinoa. Then on day 3, i find I can immediately jump to 16/8 again. If you find yourself still starving on Day 3, then simply go to 13/11 for two days. Still can’t do 16/8 after that? Then push just one hour with 14/10 for another two days until you reach 16/8. I found that I naturally stopped eating huge portions because my body set point of what I need to consume started shifting. My stomach doesn’t growl anymore at 16/8. BUT I still treat myself most days with a dessert at the end of my meal! Again, even with my 65% effort, I still dropped 12 pounds. This past 2 weeks, I have added more toning exercises. My weight shifted by just a pound but for the first time in my video chats with family they have remarked that I looked much leaner than when I did simply cardio and my every day pajama pants keep slipping down. It’s still a work in progress for sure. But be kind to yourself. If you are feeling depressed and youre a a chronic overeater, it’s not good to jump into extreme fasting and two-a-day exercises. Your mind must adjust first. Doing 12/12 at the start helped me not just with my body, but also training my brain to naturally schedule things around that 12/12 window with work, cooking, quality time with loved ones, and me-time for my hobbies (or binge watching something on Netflix or Hulu!) And of course watching videos like by Dr Fung is food for the brain! - - Wishing you all the best, my friend.
