- In this episode I show you how to paint and weather clapboard siding. We test a product from Folk Art called Crackle Medium and we also use some Soft Pastel chalks.
While I am a former railroad enthiast, I am currently attempting building Aurora monster models for my kids, and want to augment. Aged wood is particularly appreciated. And, I may return to railroad models! Really appreciate your videos.

Hi Jason, thank you for sharing your amazing techniques. Would like to see something similar regarding rust weathering. What I also enjoyed is your extremely clear and understandable speech and pronunciation - a rare exception among all tutorials I have watched so far. For someone who's mother tongue isn't English it's a big advantage.

@@JasonJensenTrains They do, I already have some of their kits here (yet unassembled), but shipping costs are pretty steep.
A 0.0625" to 0.125" inch thick piece of basswood would work as well on the back of it as long as spacing for window frames attachment is allowed for on the back of the exterior sheeting and for the joints between faces of the building.
Would love to see your techniques of how to make a plastic wall look as good as the wood

If you paint the wall before you glue on the 1/8 bracing it will warp. The bracing must be glued on first.

The experiment was interesting but I don’t think the FolkArt product really produced the effect you were looking for of paint breaking down due expansion and contraction. Could be due to having condensed the process by air drying. I think I will try it over a few days and see what happens as I like the concept. Two thumbs up on your videos. Look forward to the next.

Just tried this technique and am happy with how it turned out so far. One question, I think I should have not installed my Tichy doors and windows before I painted. Next time I think I will paint them separately and install after I have painted my walls. Wondering how you do your doors and windows on a building project. Getting practice so I can build my C&EI depot. Thanks Jason!

I think maybe speeding up the drying time (i.e. the hair dryer) is impeding the crackle effect. Have you tried an example letting everything dry naturally to compare the results?
Could you do a video on how to weather over store bought and already assembled plastic buildings...e.g. like Woodlandscenics buildings. Thanks

I just buy inexpensive brushes from the craft store.

Hey Jason, I'm coming from wargaming and just starting out in more realistic models and your channel is a gold mine!
I have a quick question about the clapboard. I'm planning on some scratch building and not sure what size (in fractions of an inch) I should be using for HO scale. I see stuff from 3/64th to 1/8th of an inch for sale online. I assume this is the size of each "plank" in the clapboard.
Also, I see both plastic and wood clapboard for sale - I think you use wood here but not 100% sure. Any recommendation for one or the other?

It can be done first. You just have to careful of the wall warping when you stain it.
Great video! Quick question, what is your preferred size of clapboard for HO scale? I was looking on sites like northeastern scale lumber and all the clapboard panel stock is just listed in MM/inches rather than scale. I know you could probably use a variety depending on the look you want. But I wanted to know what you think a good size is for HO scale. Thanks again for all your help! I bought it in a variety pack of brushes from Micheal's craft store.

Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else needs to find out about how to build a model railroad layout and scenery try Pycanta Model Railroaders Protocol (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my mate got amazing results with it.
