I have a lg 32qn600-b used with M1 MAC MINI for the money this monitor is fantastic. For Audio i use a Steinberg UR22 Mlii audio interface, along with Rokit 5 studio monitors.
I have bought the Lg a few days before the new studio display have launched. I think you are the only one who made a comparison with these two monitors, which is really great. I asked myself for a long time of what the differences are!
Bro, you just saved $1500 and like didn't get a lot of useless features man. A metal body, good monitor speaker does those really matter? And if you are a digital artist and your works are mostly used digitally, you need no more than sRGB man.

I have the LG 27UP850-w, and I couldn't ask for more from a monitor under $800 CAD. It literally gives you everything you need, even if it isn't up to an "Apple Standard"

I'm planning on buying the LG 27UP850-W, my question is, it is only advertised with only DCI-P3 color gamut while I do work with sRGB and Rec 709

I've got the LG UK850 - W that I bought back in 2018, and it's still running strong! Is the UP850 just the 2021 refresh version of that same monitor?
I think a lot of people misconstrue the demands of a professional display as always being maximal pixel density when colour accuracy plus minimally achieving industry standard resolution plus colour space coverage is just… so much more important than what the studio offers, which is a luxury consumer display that can act as a pro display but at a ridiculous upcharge

Thank you! I wish more people would understand this instead of completely dismissing every single 4K monitor because it's PPI is not "high enough". As a Graphic Designer, I'll take a 4K 27" display with high Adobe RGB coverage over the 5K 27" Studio Display if it means potentially having fewer revisions over a Client's project regarding color.
Nah pixel density is a must especially for design work or higher resolution video work

The spec sheet may not knock your socks off, but once you lay eyes on it, you'll get it. Obviously, it's a 5k retina display, so no visible pixels, even up close. And the fact that it's a glass IPS panel means no matter where you sit or stand, you'll still see that same beautiful image. and it really brings the colors to life. 10 Bit or not, It looks the part. Don't get me wrong, It's no XDR Display but about the closest you can get without breaking the bank. I would mention OLED panels but the dreaded burn in is real. If there's another display out there with the viewing angles of the studio display, please point me in that direction while I'm still in the studio displays return window. Would love to save a bunch of money but IMO there's nothing that compares to the viewing angles and glass IPS panel. Most monitors have that matte coating that destroys the viewing angles. Change my mind. Please lol.

Great video, I have a technical / troubleshooting question for you, perhaps you can help. I have LG 27UK850-W 4K (2020 version), I'm working with my M1 Pro MBP 16 inch. Over the last few days, the monitor refuses to connect to my MacBook via USB-C, it doesn't push display any picture or charge the computer. It simply does not recognize it or make the handshake. I am using the original OEM cable, but have tried TB3, TB4, USBc4 cables without any luck. HOWEVER, if I plug my MacBook into an ADDITIONAL source of power while connected to the monitor, the monitor connects to the MacBook, and works as normal. I have tried reseting the monitor to factory settings, but that didn't help either. Strangely enough, when plugged in to my friend's MacBook Air, it works flawlessly! Does it have to do with the power draw of my MacBook Pro? It SHOULD work since the monitor pushes out 60W of power. Any thoughts?

I had same issue going on with my M1 MacBook Pro 13, after couple hours with Apple support ended up reinstalling MACOS & it solved the issue.

I have 25" LG UltraWide used for external monitor along with my 2018 macbook pro. It is a lot cheaper and just doing great for my daily "coding" tasks or watching movies 😁
Lg monitors often have on screen control and software control, I have no issues changing color profiles from the lg app (I don't have the same monitor as in this video though).
was looking at LG monitors but ended up getting DELL S2722QC on sale for $360AUD ($250US), which i thought was really good deal, had everything i was after IPS/4K/USBC, so far been great for the price.
Great review, the only problem with 27" 4k with MacOS is that the text is too small and you have to use the "Scaled" resolution that can have huge impact on performances if you do heavy graphic workloads. This is why for MacOS they made the specific 5k version.
This problem doesn't exist with 1440p monitors but the resolution is too low in my opinion.
This shouldn't be a problem if you only comparing 4k and up monitors.

Gotta love Apple deliberately creating issues to sell their unnecessarily overpriced and niche products. A lot of their stuff is great and people willingly want to be a part of the ecosystem but when they force you to be a part of it by deliberately sub-optimising their compatibility with anything outside of it to sell what should be a basic necessity it’s just frustrating.
@@AR-bj5et not deliberate but can be an optimization problem, I don’t know if is already solved now. The sell standalone Mac without monitor and is not in their interest sell a product with poor performance.
is this the ultrafine version? I am a bit confused because it has a different name compared to the ultrafine 27 inch 4k - are there any differences between the two?
if LG monitor has the U in the name, usually it's under their Ultrafine line up.
but of course ultrafine has low end and high end class.

There’s a cheaper display out there than the LG for sure!
The worst things about a Mac:
- if I don't own an apple monitor (I have a 4K Samsung) you don't get the right scale
- if I don't buy magnet app, I have no decent window management
- if I don't buy Crossover or a virtual machine software, I can't play almost nothing (and still very limited)
- if I have a 120 Hz Monitor or TV, I won't get a 120 Hz/VRR signal
- I have reduced NAS/ network performance versus other PC

Some people claim 27inches 4k monitors can't display Apple OS properly. For me it's the opposite way, Apple doesn't handle screens correctly.

I used a 5K iMac for software dev at my previous employer for a few years. Now days I rock a 16" M1 Pro (love it) and the LG UN850-W 4K. I still miss the 5k display. For the price, the LG is superb, but working with predominantly text all day, I really miss the 5k. Between it being glossy instead of matte and having the perfect scaling, it really was delicious to look at. The LG is high enough DPI to be retina-esq in appearance and deliver a similar look, but that 5k sharpness is something else. So torn, if this display was at the sub £1k price, I'd probably buy it. I spend my entire working day every day looking at it, so it would be a worthy investment, but it just feels way too over priced.
Same situation and I have no idea how to create a workstation at home with my macbook Air M1. I have a 5k iMac at work and working with code and other text all day is totally painless, when i use my 4k screen at home, it's a nightmare. I'm thinking of switching to the iMac M1 or taking an "old" iMac 5k on the used market, unfortunately,, with little computing power compared to the M chips.
Do you have some advice? I am a junior developer.
@@lucalorenzetti9905 I ended up just buying the Studio Display, and honestly, I'm not dissapointed. Far from it, I love it. On paper, its not competitive, but in person its a different story. For an LCD, the blacks are deep and the panel is perfectly uniform, nothing beats a gloss display. The speakers are also punching far, far above their weight class. I figured I'd used my LG 850 for around 8,000 hours over the last few years, so in terms of value for money, and given I use the display all day every day, it was actually a smart investment in my eye health (auto brightness and actually getting bright to match the room) and work. Worked out at something like £20/mo over 3 years if I did the cost benefit analysis, which considering its allowing me to pull in my salary and work, its a no brainer.

Be aware of using a mac with a 27" 4k resolution, it effects your overall performance. You will run into some heavy gpu scaling because it isn't native. The native mac upscaling resolution for 27" is 5k.

As a 27" 4K Monitor user, I can confirm running at 2560x1440 does affect performance but if you have a decent GPU, it's not that bad. I've got the higher end 2016 15" MBP and everything runs smooth unless I'm doing 3D work in Blender.
not much of an issue on MBA M1. You will also have some performance hit driving 5k display.

@@chidorirasenganz You can actually use BetterDummy for much better scaling handling.. But yes the performance overhead on my computer is like 2 percent of my GPU. Granted, I have a quite beefy Mac, but we are talking about professionals willing to drop thousands of dollars on displays, so, I think its fair.
I own this LG monitor for some months now pairing it with my MacBook Pro 2019 (15inch) and I’ve noticed some performance issues. After a hard research (unfortunately almost no one talks about that) I found out that scaling to 1440p can affect significantly the gpu and that costs fan noise, thermal issues and, on demanding tasks, a slow computer overall. Lately I’ve been thinking about upgrading to a Mac studio but I’m wondering if I am going to face similar issues or the m1 chips can handle that scaling better? Could anyone give me a responsible answer? 😂

For me(A software developer) the studio display is really nice just because of the very high pixel density. Being able to have extremely clear and readable text is a great thing when writing code. it just makes it more enjoyable to read comments or function definitions etc... So for me it would be worth it for that reason there's only 2 displays that I know of that have higher pixel density there's the 14/16 inch MacBook pros and then there's an expensive dell display which is even more than the studio display. the Pro Display XDR also has the same pixel density but I don't have any need for the HDR features. I barely even notice it on my 14 inch pro.
You actually can't compare the studio display with iphone screen or imac or macbook screen, because you will find the studio display has way worth dpi. If you want the sharp text, you should give the portal monitor 11-19 inch a try. They have insane high dpi, because you can watch them closely to your face, similar to how iphone can give you that number as well.

I use this Display (LG) with my MacBook Pro 16". Just for your info: MacBook Pro is overheating (common problem with the MacBook Pro's from 2016/2019). Colors are good but not as good. Don't expect a apple clone - if you rely on correct colors in your work. However, being able to flip the screen is kinda nice. Sound is awful

I'm currently looking to replace my old Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display. I have a 2019 MacBook Pro (Kicking myself for not having waited a few months). It has intel Core i9 processor. My research and deduction was that the thunderbolt to USB C was a big part of the overheating. I even took my MacBook to the apple store and say running various files in Adobe creative suite on one of the new studio displays monitoring the kernel task. New Apple Studio display seemed to be fine without overheating the MacBook.
I had hoped I found the answer and a native USB-C cabled monitor would do the trick. But I am not Ian. the market for Apple's $$$$$ for this monitor
Have you discovered any other information regarding the overheating issue and if other monitors will work or if it is a universal problem with all inputs?

I wish there is a similar display from other brands with speakers and camera as well. There aren’t many unfortunately and most that do aren’t the same level as the higher end models
I own both the lg 5k and the studio display and a 4K display. If you have an M1 mac like my M1 Max MacBook and do professional work that’s not hdr the studio display is a great update and well worth the extra $300 over the lg 5k. The studio display is a different panel the the LG that’s brighter and unlike the LG 5k can playback HDR CZcams videos (though you technically can’t edit in HDR). Also there is no lag in waking up from sleep, a problem that has plagued m1 macs since day 1 when using third party external displays… sometimes it takes 10-15secs of button and mouse smashing to wake up which gets really annoying, the studio display is INSTANT, this alone is worth it to me, it truly is and feels like one machine at last. The speakers are amazing I don’t care about the webcam as it’s going to get compressed and look like shit anyways though Skype etc. Also if you are in photo or design there is no going back to 4K after using 5k it’s much more important for work where you need to zoom in and make small selections than HDR, you have to zoom/lean in half as much to see things. I still think it’s a bit overpriced but there is nothing else that has these crucial specs for photographer using m1 Macs (other the $7000 Pro Display XDR). The build quality is fantastic and the $400 stand upgrade (though well made) is a slap in the face from apple. That’s it
Some of that display behaviour is fixable in software, by the way. BetterDummy and Luna allow you (collectively) to control scaling, brightness, volume, wake behaviour, to a very advanced degree over a number of connection protocols. Luna is paid but cheaper than a new display, and BetterDummy is free, the pro version is very much not necessary for most people.
How much do/did you notice scaling issues on the 4K monitor?
@@dustinglass Honestly I didn’t notice at first cause I hadn’t experienced 5k yet, when I first switched over I didn’t know what I was looking it but finally my large screen just looked good like my iPhone and iPads did. Now going back is a bit of a joke and just looks kinda blurry and wrong being able to see pixels etc. still love this monitor

I'm using the LG model you are reviewing here (or a very close model.) It's definitely okay, but it results in a real rat's nest of cables under my monitor. And worse, I couldn't figure out how to get the internal speakers to work, (I'm probably just dumb) so I'm using a set of $25 USB speakers instead. Considering that it was only about $400, I don't regret the purchase, but I'm definitely eyeing the expensive Apple display, not just because it's a good display, but it will remove most of the rat's nest of cables under my display. I can use this LG monitor as the monitor for my backup computer. My main regret is that neither of these displays has built-in KVM support, although the LG has an easy-access switch input feature which almost works as good when I use a USB hub for my peripherals.
i think the comparison is kind of lack the price to "spec" off the monitor, and i personaly think that a another in range monitor will have a better variable to price range

Why is it more expensive than LG ultrafine 27UN880-B which is ergonomic? What is the difference?
The UP850 has 400 nit brightness , usb-c 95w charging, and better color accuracy with dci-p3 95. The 27un880 has a better stand but 350 nit brightness, 60w usb-c charging, and slight worse color accuracy (srgb99)

I have this LG display. I also have a 5k 27” iMac. I do not have a Studio Display. I have the LG display next to my iMac and I use it with my work computer. The iMac is my personal computer. I can say that without a doubt the iMac display is FAR better than the LG. Just glancing from the iMac to the LG, the text is so much blurrier. It also doesn’t get as bright. And the speakers suck. If the Studio Display is anything close to the iMac screen it is WELL worth $1600, at least to a design professional like myself.

I have a lg 32inch ultra fine and a 27 inch Ultra fine. But my old 5k iMac is way better you notice the difference when you get it in your workspace. I am getting the apple monitor. plus when you edit 4k video it's pixel for pixel and you can still have your pallets

The problem with the apple studio monitor is that is a nice monitor but not good enough for a specific professional usage. If for you the studio monitor is enough, probably is also enough the LG.
The only usage i see is for photographers but if you are really serious about it you probably will prefer an eizo anyway.
I have the studio monitor at home because is an elegant and all around monitor, and we have many lg 27up850 at work, and i don't see much difference on daily work on a working environment.
In our studio we changed last year all the monitor to the LG 27up850 because we had to replace 30 monitors and we prefered buy cheap and good ones and with the money we save it we aquire a good HDR moritor for color grading (Sony PVM-X3200).
My complaint is that Apple displays have glass up to the edge where as LG has a little bit of plastic projecting the edge. I have tapped the edge of an Apple display and cracked or chipped the glass with repair bill quite high. I have done that with the LG and no damage. I guess I am just a crazy old fool. I do not do any photo editing so many possible color issue are irrelevant to my work.

For those who can't see the difference between 4k and 5k, just stick to 4k and save money, for folks like myself designer/developer there is nothing quite like the studio display. For about $2000 here in India, it's worth every penny. I end up billing more than that in half a week.
Bro Apple purposely don't support industry standard stuff so that they can shove their overpriced products down their loyal users' throats.
Why doesn't MacOS scale well on 4k? Who asked MacOS engineers to not cater to the 4K resolution when it is the industry standard? 768p/900p/1080p/1440p/2160p and beyond.
But Apple chooses unconventional resolutions like 5k/6k and some weird resolutions on other devices so that there is not much choice for their users! This way they can design some very average yet overpriced products and sell them to their loyal userbase.
And other panel manufacturers simply don't care as the MacOS userbase is much smaller compared to Windows and those people are accustomed to only purchase Apple products.
@@DeepteshLovesTECH There is no right or wrong when it comes to the standard. Windows and Mac have been different from the start and always had different features. Both adopt different strategies on many things including display scaling. It just so happens to be that most of the world uses Windows and therefore most the world's scaling is suited to windows. It's just a reflection of the market. If Mac grows to the dominance of windows, there's going to be many more monitors that cater to Mac scaling.
So it's a choice, use a Mac or a Windows and deal with what the market offers for both those platforms. And anyway 4k on a Mac works for most people well.

85 percent of Adobe RGB is a pretty hard sell for a lot of graphic designers for 1600 dollars
@@DeepteshLovesTECH We both know how hard Apple tries to get people to buy their products to complete the ecosystem. They'd loose a lot of money if their products worked well with other products. (Assuming they charge the same price for their products).
The thinner bezels around the lg monitor are the reason why I won't upgrade any time soon.
I have the slightly older version of that LG. It’s really very good. I’ve mostly been using it as a secondary monitor for my 27” iMac (2017) borrowed from my employer to WFH.
The colour accuracy was not far off the iMac’s display, it was bright and crisp, and though not Retina, it was barely noticeable if sitting a comfortable distance away.
I’ve had to return the iMac though I’m continuing to WFH, but was using my newish M1 MacBook Air more anyway (the Fusion drive of the iMac was annoying slooooow).
To make up for this, I’ve twisted my employers arm to order me a 32” LG Ultrafine 32UN880 Ergo :)
I think I’m going to be pretty happy with that, so will probably sell my 27UL850, even though it’s so good.

you know that retina is ips screens, apple just call's it as retina to sound like its they tech. your lg probably have same ips screen as mac do
@@SuperKREPSINIS - It’s called ‘Retina’ not because it’s IPS (In-Plane Switching, which is a way of displaying pixels), but because it’s ultra-high resolution - e.g. a 27” iMac is 5K, and all other manufacturers 27” screens only go up to 4K. Apple’s own 32” monitor is 6K, whereas my 32” Ultrafine is only 4K.
You can get 1080p IPS screens, and any iMac that had one of them was not branded Retina (e.g. the terrible last 21.5” they sold for education market)

@@SuperKREPSINIS - that’s a 13” MacBook resolution, which is generally far higher than most other laptops of same size. ‘Retina’ is Apple’s branding, yes, but it’s not just a rename of IPS, it’s because of the higher pixel density, making individual pixels too small to see with the naked eye.
Dell ultrasharp is another another great option. It can tilt, rotate and swivel.
Using my LG C1 4k 48" OLED with 120hz GSYNC for Windows Gaming and my MacBook... sure the scaling thing isnt perfect.. but its big enough to ignore this and oled is looking damn good without paying around 4k$ for the bigger apple one.
And on top of that, your monitor does ACTUALLY work for professional video work, like cinema color grading. Where the apple display will absolutely fall short.
actually it's a good decision to sell your cat before getting the Studio Display. so you don't have to worry when your cat munch on the power cable, and you have to replace the whole monitor for that

i have a 4k monitor and i would say the difference is night and day the PPI and vibrancy of colors are not the same. Lets all accept the 5K display is on the next level and should never be compared. instead compare only 4k to 4k and only compare apple display to high end looking monitor thats it.
I think for people it depends on what scaling they use, and how far they sit back from the screen. For me who likes some distance, the difference is negligible. But for me using a laptop, for example, I tend to lean in and will notice and be aggravated by pixelation.
The difference in PPI is almost negligible in the real world. On a Mac you will notice the 4K being crap because of the god awful MacOS scaling process, which degrades the image. The difference between PPI is smaller than the one between the iPhone 11 old LCD display and the wonderful iPhone 11 Pro OLED, with the former claimed to be "more than enough" by Apple Fanboys.

If you are a professional you should stick with the Pro Display XDR but if you aren't then you should not waste your money buying Studio Display just because of it's popularity. I think new bie should stick to the LG monitor.

Ask any creative director or person who video shoots and then does editing on a high end tech display, they'll tell you there's a difference in the display. The studio display is insane!
I just got the 32" version of this LG monitor I am very happy with it both on windows and mac but mac has some scaling issue and mouse feels lagy
Run the display at native 4K do not scale it and you wont have any issue. Why would you scale it anyway.

you can even go LG 27 UP / UL / UK 650. its the same panel just without the usb-c thunderbolt built in. which is for a common pc user useless anyways.

I can't justify the cost of the Studio Display because it incorporates speakers and a webcam (which is great for its intended use case alongside the Mac Studio or Mini). Apple would do well to introduce an "entry level" monitor (with no speakers or webcam) for those of us MacBook Pro users who want "Apple build quality" who have no need for those extras.
No one, NO ONE will EVER convince me that $1600 stand is worth it, let alone $2K.
The new Samsung s8 viewfinity has 98% dci p3 and is also less than 500euros.

Please be verrrrrrrrrry careful about "ANY" 27 inch 4K display. Your mac will take a performance hit since it will constantly be scaling the images internally. Apple requires either 220 ppi (27" 5K) or 110 ppi

I really tried to like the LG, but my issue was the dead pixels. I returned it 3 times and each time was issues with MANY dead pixels shipped from Amazon.

I seriously do not understand the point of Apple's studio display monitor. It's for such a niche consumer.
It’s so much better, but not everyone appreciates the improvements.
It's for the logo and placebo effect 😂 put the LG panel inside Apple's casing and you make a high profit margin , Lg and Samsung produce the panels and who with serious mind use onboard speakers
Charging this much for 5k is bizarre, but not many others seem willing to enter the space.
