    I’m surprised you never mentioned the simple laws of thermodynamics.
    Fans cannot destroy heat.
    While the area immediately in front of the fan feels a bit cooler because it’s blowing the air warmed by your body away, the fact is that the fan is bringing more energy into the room.
    Thus, if the room is sealed otherwise, the fan is actually slowly heating the room up.
    So no, under these conditions, you will not catch hypothermia from a fan.

    • @spookyblush-speedruns
      @spookyblush-speedruns Před 2 lety +65

      While the net heat may go up, it is possible that the persons core temperature drops. Almost certainly not enough to cause hypothermia, but it is important not to disregard that the air may rise in temp, while the body lowers, just a bit. I would like to know the results of that study, & how the daughters core temp changed (or did not).

      Very often I keep my place cooler with a fan than my neighbor with 2 small air conditioners. It helps that my fan is made of metal and literally keeps air circulating. The key to the best 'cooler' systems is circulation. Just think of when a thermostat gets plugged on a car. That heat stays in one place until it is cooled or moved. This is why I have always chosen 1 good metal fan over 3 plastic. The metal stays cool on the fan, which in turn keeps cooling the air as it circulates.

      If your running a fan make sure there's an open window for the heat generated by the fan has a place to go. This was discovered during a heatwave in NYC, many seniors either passed away or got heat sickness. You need to have a place for the hot air to go.

    One possible cause of fan death that I read about when I was living off grid is CO poisoning. I was going to be heating my space from a coal fire stove and thought I would read up on safety. The idea was that carbon monoxide from the cooking stove would build up underneath the house, and the ventilation from a fan could cause it to be pulled up through the floorboards. I hadn't even heard of Fan Death before that. I'm a bit skeptical, but not entirely unconvinced.

    I never had a fan on at night, I never had air conditioning. But I live in Czechia (same climate as Ukraine or Russia or Canada) so there was no need. And there are indeed options to cool off without electricity. Water is a big factor, have a wet blanket hanging near a window, lot of the heat gets used by evaporating the water, if you leave the window on ventilation it does not get too humid, all good. Pretty much swamp cooler, it is a low energy way to cool.

      Yeah, right?! Here in Brazil, unless if you're in the 3 southernmost states of the country, you HAVE to have a fan turned on all the day, otherwise you will melt. Especially at noon, with temperatures like 30°C (86°F), 36°C (around 97°F), even 45°C (113°F) on some countryside parts of the country, and the temperature stays more or less the same throughout the entire year. In the state where I live in, it barely drops in winter. Like, 4°C at the best scenario possible. It's nothing like Arizona though, but it's pretty hot. We have a say here that Brazil is only for professionals, and it kinda holds up when you see the weather woman saying that at the next day, the maximum temperature in your city will be 34°C with a sky without any clouds. Yeah... Fans are essentially obligatory to live here.

      I sleep with my AC on 62 and two box fans on both sides of my bed lol. During winter I leave the window wide open even when it’s like 25 out. I sleep so well when my room is freezing

    The only time I 'almost died', do to a fan, was when my lights went out a few summers ago and so my fan stopped fanning!!

    Been sleeping with a fan on for 5 years now, and I rarely turn it off after the pandemic started. I'm still here alive. Just remember to drink plenty of water before and after you sleep to replenish your body. And if you feel cold but refuse to close the fan, just wear some jacket or wear thick blankets. And wear socks too.

    I sleep with a fan blowing on me too in the summertime. I just like to feel the air moving. It doesn't have anything to do with being too hot. During winter i don't use a fan but i do live without turning my furnace on. And that's mid east coast too. It doesn't bother me at all.

    Dehydration is a bit much but i think it causing throat/nose dryness as well as overall dryness of the skin is something i have experienced.
    However this is something that should happen with a fan regardless of if its a sealed room or not.
    And i agree with the air conditioning point. Not only are u using a bunch of power, but u dont get coolness out of mowhere, u actually heat the other side(outside ur home), not sure if that matters but ye.
