My sympathies on your snake discovery. I always stomp my feet and thump the greenery before I get comfortable to work. They can't hear you coming but can feel the vibrations and will typically flee. I love the pleasure you get from your beautiful garden. You hinted that people were commenting on their perceived untidiness of your garden. I find it beautiful and inspiring. I find gardens more beautiful when nurtured and allowed to grow rather than told how it should grow. Thank you for all you contribute.

Chickens can eat the greens of your bean plants as well as other plants. So instead of putting the spent plants into your compost, give them to the chickens. Also, your compost area could be attracting mice. If you have mice, snakes will show up to eat the mice.

Hi Asia❤ I understand completely. I see snakes in my garden all the time and it shakes me up, but I get better until I see another one. It is a process. I love Fall and Winter gardening for that reason. Snakes don’t crawl around as much in those seasons. I keep a shovel and a bottle of Wasp and hornet spray with me all times. The spray will make them go in the opposite direction. I wear my boots year all year round. Stay safe🙏🏽❤️😊💚

Hi Asia, there was an episode where you saw a rat/mouse in your garden. That may be why it's there. I had stray cats and a garden snake this year before I realized why they were here. Freaks me out too!
My neighbors cats help me by patrolling my yard they chase the squirrels, lizards and I’m sure any snakes.
😅😭😅just saw a mouse today and tried to get my cat to look for it.🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️😂 him & his brothers are lucky they're cute cats cause i'll be mad if i see damage via mouse munching.
Mothballs are really good to repell snakes. I put them down all around my grow bags to keep them away. ❤

They don’t like the smell. Sometimes I crush the mothballs and mix with sulfur.

Asia, I agree with you on blossom end rot. I had same situation on three tomatoes on one plant toward the bottom, the rest of the tomatoes on same plant were fine. I did nothing to create end rot nor anything to fix it.

Actually your garden is basically container gardening. So you have to keep fertilizing because the nutrients are getting washed out everytime you water. I start with about 2 cup of water with 1/4 cup yeast and sugar, let that sit over night in a sun tea container . Next day 1 add 1 tsp of Epsom salt, 1 tsp redman sea salt(has minerals) then I have a banana peel or 2 fermenting with a few egg shells(for 2 or 3 days) I add the fermented water to my sun tea jar and fill with water and give my plants a Turkey baster filled with mixture after I watered. I do this 1x a week. Mid week I give each plant a tsp or two of earthworm dirt. I have about a quarter acre of garden. Mix 2 gallons if you think you need more. Happy gardening!
I used your recipe and cooked some Shishito Peppers and they were delicious! I left them on the vine a lil too long so they were not hot but very spicy so thanks for the heads up.
I’m terrified of snakes too! Y’all…the other day I was sitting on my back porch in my garden and I heard something fall next to me. I looked over and about 3’ from me was a 3’ rat snake. I grabbed my dog and ran! 😂 Luckily my husband was home and able to kill it. It was crawling up the brick on the side of our house and eating wasps from a wasp nest hanging under the eave. I’ve never seen that before in my life but will make sure there are no wasps nests around from now on!

I am glad that I saw your last video about shishito peppers. I thought you had to wait til they turned colors. I had so many that were green. Pulled them and sautéed them up like you did and me and my husband enjoyed them with our Sunday breakfast 😄😄😄.
Make yourself some organic mosquito spray. I mix peppermint oil with water in a spray bottle and it works fairly well for being in Florida. That 1870’s Homestead has a good recipe but requires more oils.
It's Eve's fault and I've got a bone to pick with her when I get to heaven.....terrified of snakes. Now you know how I felt 2 months ago planting out mom's garden, dug the hole to put in a squash, and uncovered the babies.
So far so good since then. I also put out "snake stop" powder which has a lot of cinnamon in it (not the kind that smells like moth balls). Fingers crossed for you, friend. 🤞

Garden looks great! Congrats. I'm in a full blown war with Japanese beetles. They ate my Moringa, I have to restart them. They also wrecked my Passion Fruit but it's recovering.
Remove them and add milky spore to your soil it kills the larva( short white fat guys in soil) you can find it like Menards, Lowe's.
Garder snake = no mice!

It’s definitely a good idea for you to do whatever feels best when it comes to adding the calcium. Especially since EVERYBODY has opinions. 😂
However I would just like to point out that I have atrocious watering habits and things like mulching and calcium are the things that help my plants actually survive that and even thrive as they get fruit earlier and keep doing so through my man created droughts.
You don’t have to be a perfect waterer in order for your plants not to get blossom end rot. It’s easier to adopt a structure that allows your plants to work with your natural rhythm when it comes to watering.
That being said I’m curious to see how your changes in your watering technique work out. I wouldn’t be surprised if it leads to your having new insights that can help us all.
That’s how I got my system to this point. Doing what you’re doing now. Focusing on what I thought was important and tuning out the rest. That includes things I WANT to try because I knew it was important to take things a step at a time so I could see what was working.
And you’re right to be concerned about treatments that might create new problems. I also like your approach of keeping things in context, as you point out a few plants getting getting end rot isn’t the worse thing in the world. 😮

Asia, I think you approaching the blossom end rot problem by seeing if it is a watering problem is a great idea. Two years ago after we had a couple of back to back heatwaves here in Southern California, a large part of my container garden just burnt up, even though I had it under shade cloth. I eventually came to suspect it was a watering issue more than anything else even though I had everything on drip irrigation. Last year, I started adjusting my watering schedule, watering more often (up to 3 times a day) when the heatwaves came on. My containers made it through the summer with flying colors.
Also, want to say that you've inspired to be more observant and less likely to jump to taking measures with my garden problems. For instance, I used to spray religiously with neem oil and peppermint and rosemary oil to keep the critters off. But then I noticed it was killing the ladybugs too, and I definitely need them. So I got observant and noticed that some of the birds were actually taking care of the green caterpillar (we call them bug birdies). Now I do use diatomaceous earth to help my baby kale and collard plants along. But I use it sparingly. For aphids, I find blasting the infested plant a couple of times with a strong stream of water from the hose effectively gets rid of them.
So like you, I now mostly let the garden do what it does.

I worry about the critters, especially the 4-legged ones, but fortunately they’re more afraid of us so try to avoid being seen. I know I have a bunch of grass snakes because I found a nest, but I still rarely ever see them. I just hope they’re eating up the grasshoppers and any rodents. 😂

Garden still looks great. Snakes...omg, we had them all the time when we lived in Texas. I am proud of you! I may not have been back down there. LOL Garden is gorgeous. I have taken a tip from you this year. I am not worried about anything this year. I use my compost, my fertilizer and water daily since it is so dry here......and let this garden do what it do! LOL. It is very cold here this year so things are growing so slow. It may not be much of a harvest this year but like you, I am learning as I go. 😃

Maringa grow fast. I cut my Maringa three about three weeks ago because it grew straight up so I cut it to make five more trees and it is growing fast. Snakes do not like moth balls nor pine sol.

Hi Asia, I hate snakes also but I found out that if you get diesel fuel and spray it on the edge (fence line) around your yard they don't like the smell and the fuel will burn their bottom. try it ,it works. you can get a spay pump and use that ,but you will smell the fuel for a couple of days.

I am not afraid of snakes, thankfully, but my sister is deathly afraid of them. I had so many rat snakes that I had to relocate last year, and I didn't even have a garden growing. Sounds to me like you need a barn cat or 2. I know you have a dog, so I am not sure how that would work for you. My tomato plants haven't produced any ripened fruit yet, but I should have cherry and Roma tomatoes very soon. I am definitely going to try Shishito Peppers next year.
..Lol..Hey Asia...I saw that epi where you saw the snake and mistook it for a "worm" and thought "no-o, that's probably a grass snake". I didn't say anything though because they are completely harmless. (You can't mistake a garter snake for a worm. They look just like any other snake...only in miniature. :) ) Grass snakes are not the prettiest snakes but they won't get very much bigger than that and, again, none toxic..and, as far as my experience..none biting. Don't worry about it. :) ..If you encounter it again..just pick it up and toss it over your fence. 😅 ...You can get used to them, just as you do to certain disgusting bugs. I know that sounds light and trite, but it's not. I feel the same as you about snakes but, after encountering these things while backyard gardening, decided it was get used to running into them periodically or give up gardening. Well-l that wasn't happening. Oh..and they usually travel around with a companion and love to makeout in your containers and under decorative stones/rocks and so forth. Just take a deep breath grab the little sucker by his tail and toss it somewhere away from your garden.

Put your Garter snake in an *ber, and send it to my house! lol (They eat so many slugs. Seriously.) They do have mildly toxic venom, and some people can be sort of allergic. S/he's way more scared of you, and they don't waste bites unless people pick them up and mess with them. Respect each other, and you'll make a great partnership. 😎

I don’t like 🐍 either and my phobia isn’t going to disappear just because some say not to be afraid. Unfortunately, I have encounters way more than I ever imagined. They get in my garden & occasionally they get in my chicken coop to eat eggs. 🤦🏽♀️😖 Keep being brave.

I feel the same way you do about snakes in my garden, also 🐸 frogs. I have family and friends who are exterminators and learned that mothballs and sulfur keeps them away. I have seen a small snake under my watermelon and I could not bare to eat it. I had my yard man remove the watermelon and vines and now I only grow up melons on a trellis. I know you don’t use things to get rid of pests and I totally understand. I however buy cheap moth balls and throw them around areas where snakes can hide. I also put regular old fashioned salt on my patio when I see frogs 🐸 in my space. I try to move things around, because snakes like to hide underneath things. I will click off a CZcams video when I realize the CZcamsr is filming a snake sliderring in their garden. I also learned when you see frogs, look closely for snakes. I grew up with neighbors who had chickens and it’s very common to find a snake in the coup eating the chicken eggs. I’m not giving up on my backyard garden but I try to limit spaces where snakes like to hide.
My grandma was so mad at my uncle for killing the giant copper head because it ate all the moles in her garden

unpopular opinion, I love snakes lol they are amazing animals but I do keep my distance from the venomous ones of course. The mole is probably the reason it's in your garden. They follow rodents. :)

I am terrified of snakes big or small, poison or not PERIOD. If I see one, the garden belongs to it for the remainder of the day. I usually need to lay down to calm myself...😊

I do not like snakes at all. I don't care for them no matter what, and that is my fear of coming across one.
I feel the same way. If I’m going into an area of my garden with high growth or even moving a brick I use my garden hoe. I am hoping if I see one I can take it out with my hoe. My fear is to intense to share my garden space
