Asia, I only grow indeterminate tomatoes. I never pinch off the first four suckers. What I do is stake in cages and then stake the suckers to poles. Once tomatoes have clustered at bottom I start removing some of the lower leaves. I continue to remove leaves as more clusters of tomatoes appear. That is the only thing I do. I get about 35 tomatoes per plant. I am in New York , zone 5.

Now my type tomatoes just have a harder time absorbing calcium. I also notice that it's only the first flush. So to fix it I would save egg shells crushed them real fine and put them in the holes when I planted them and it solved the problem
I started hand pollinating my squash. I was intimidated but it was super easy! It helped me get squash instead of just flowers.
I enjoy your videos. What I do with my zucchini plant is take a Q-tip and pollinate the flowers myself. There's a male and female flower and if you dont have pollinators you can manually do it yourself.
It has been my experience that Paul Robeson (indeterminant) tomato plants do not like very humid or wet conditions. They also do not like prolonged intense afternoon sun. They also are not an abundant producing plant. If you want a bunch, you got to plant a bunch. He's a diva of the tomato plants 😅 But the flavor is so good. Happy growing 😊

Hey there! Girl, I just wanted to say I found your channel recently and I really like your vibe ❤
I don't like to waste money too and for years I have a worm bin and use the liquid that drips as a liquid fertilizer. You can put comfrey on the bin. The worms are incredible workers and you will have a nice compost in no time - I have a tote right next to the worm bin and when it gets full I transfer those to the tote and leave it to age. That way you make sure is fully worked in and won't burn any plants and you can use that to start you seedlings.
For the blossom end rot, there is a JADAM recipe where you use roasted egg shells and vinegar (let the mixture buble and rest for a week), then you can use 1 or 2 tablespoons to a gallon of water and foliar fertilize your garden. It works and is almost free. Wood ashes help a lot worked as a soil amendment 😊

Asia, cucumbers and squash slow down production when temperatures are above 90 degrees. Bees also slow down in this extreme heat.
The weeds and grass will make😊 good fertilizer tea if there’s been no type of chemicals sprayed on them. I understand about the compost but with the way that some other gardeners are talking about how the soil they bought is not doing well for their plants, I would be hesitant to throw away the good stuff that you have developed. Not going to name the channel but they have over 500,000 subscribers. They talked about how the soil they already had and added compost did so much better than the new soil that they bought. Possibility of companies trying to service the demand and not able to keep up. Also, you can cold compost were you don’t have to turn it. It takes longer to break down but without all the extra work. Just a thought. Stay safe out there and happy gardening.

If you're tired of having compost bins, try getting a compost tumbler and you're see that ever breaks down really fast.
My theory: You have a really good and balanced ecosystem in your yard, and so things balance themselves. You've been talking about having the vole poking around in your garden, and the animals that eat rodents have shown up as well.
This is not any professional opinion at all but maybe if you take care of the vole, he who shall not be named will push on. Just friendly advice because I feel so bad watching you be scared because I picked up some potatoes out of my box I was growing them in and a small garter snake fell off the potatoes and I was like I hope you like all the mashed potatoes you can get, sir!
Hurricane Beryl did a number on my garden. Its time to revamp and get going.
I have compost pile. It is a lot of work trying to turn it. It gets heavy and hard to do for me. I hope to just use natural compost that I make myself at some point I bury my food scraps in my soil. That has brought me plenty of worms in the garden. I planted densely this year. I don't think I like it LOL. I can't see the ground and I"m like you said, " I need to be able to see what's out here!" LOL. I have some comfrey seeds that I need to plant to be able to use for fertilizer. I do use grass from my yard and a make a 'weed tea' (funk-juice) Lol. Great job on being in the garden alone. I try to stomp and make a lot of noise when I go out there so 'whatever' is out there can hear me and go away! LOL
My compost is in a bin, which makes it a bit easier to manage, but I guess I am just impatient. I don't like waiting a year to use compost. Mid-season, I harvest whatever has broken down and make compost tea with the rest. At the end of the growing season, I bury what hasnt broken down into the beds. I have a worm bin, and I use weed fertilizer in my garden. Compost takes too long.
Hey Lady I get red wigglers walmart 🐛 and I know you don't like to prune your tomato plants, but those suckers you can up pot those and that can be your second set of tomato plants.That's what I do.Saves a lot of time because you don't start from scratch Happy planting🌿💚🌿
I planted various varieties of sunflower seeds and the Titan and Greys grew about 8-10 feet tall. Wild parrots came along and ate some of the heads that were ready to eat. A day , later, about 20 arrived to continue eating the heads but the neighbor's sitting in their backyard spooked them off. 😔

Asia, I think I told you about my experience with a snake in garden a few years ago. Came across a five feet black snake in garden about two inches from my hand. If you have a cat who stray in your garden you won't have problems with snakes, rats or moles.
Hi Asia...watching now. I don't know if you've considered it or not; but you don't have to hot compost (lots of turning and work)..you can cold compost (barely any turning at all). The only thing is, with cold composting..some of your small seeds may not decompose. So when you use the compost, for example..tomato plants may start popping all over and you won't know which they are. Easy pull ups though, so if something grows that you don't want or where you don't want ..it's easy to get rid of. Another plus!.. if you don't feel like spreading compost..you can take some, stir it with water for a bit and water/sprinkle it all over your plants. You'll get the same results as planting in compost. 🙂

@@carleanr4051....Yes, you can cold compost. You will need at minimum 2 containers. (We actually use 3). One will be for fresh compost material and the other for composted material. You periodically remove composted material from the 1st container to the 2nd; then continue adding to the 1st. The material from the bottom of the 1st container won't be completely broken down, but should be dark and rich and will continue to decompose while material in the first box continues to break down. We use 3 deckboxes. 1st for new material, 2nd for 1st 'removed' material, and 3rd for fully composted material. If you use this method continue to balance nitrogens to carbons; i.e, greens (kitchen scraps, yard waste, etc. to browns (dead leaves, paper, dried eggshells, etc. ). But you don't have to be as exact as you do with hot composting. Continue to add to the 1st container; also there should always be zero smell. You'll probably get the shock of your life when you open the container to add something during high summer and find it filled with soldier fly larvae happily munching their little heads off. ...I did! 😅
Girl!! All my black beauty tomatoes look just like that and I’ve gotten so many this year. I was thinking the same thing. They don’t get as dark as the packet BUT, they are delicious and they were the first to produce in my garden. The only downfall is that they do seem prone to splitting. At least mine was a FREE seed from baker creek. I really do like the black beauty tomato and I’d definitely grow it again. ❤

From what I understand with the black beauties is the more actual direct sunlight the tomatoe gets the blacker it gets. I grew some a couple years ago and they were definitely black, so gorgeous but didn't really care for the flavor so haven't grown them since.

Yes I’m pretty sure it’s the sun exposure. I have an indigo rose that some of the fruits are almost completely black except for the base and there’s no leaves shading them from the sun. Winter here though so they’re not ripening for eating though 😢
I had a tomato salad with real bacon and ranch dressing for dinner last night! Summer in a bowl! So worth the work. Shishitos are coming in. I think I'm going to tempura them! Purple and green are my favorite colors. Thanks as always for sharing Asia.

I found you recently and I love love love what you are doing and your sharing! I do however want to mention Something! I noticed that you placed water in your roost area/coop where the chickens sleep, this is a huge no. That area should be kept clean and dry. Also noticed that when you collect eggs they are soiled/dirty. Eggs are porous and you can/will
Wash bacteria into your eggs. I would make sure your next boxes are clean, use nest pads, and that your girls aren’t sleeping in them. I felt led to share for what it’s worth. 🙏

I use comfrey for my plants too and Black beauty tomatoes gets darker when it is directly facing the sun

Asia I put red worms in my compost pile and I never turn it. It may take longer but I still get great compost out of it.
I just learned of your channel from viewing another CZcams channel called Exploring Alternatives. That channel did a feature video of your work which is the video I just viewed. You're doing Excellent work! Please remain diligent in your efforts.
If you're having trouble composting you may want to try a compost tumbler. I have found tumblers seem easier to work with especially in a smaller space.
My Paul Robeson is still 6 inches tall. It has been the slowest tomato plant I've ever grown even with regular fertilizing. Not a fan! And yes, that red pepper looks like a Jimmy Nardello... my favorite!

I’m with you! I’m not pruning tomatoes anymore either. It gets so hot and humid here so fast that tomatoes don’t last that long in the summer. I’ll prune to keep them from touching the soil but that’s it. I think it makes them get diseased faster when I prune. The black tomatoes only turn black where the sun hits them. Loving your garden right now. I’m back in my garden after that damn snake fell off the side of my house beside me. Girl…I’m scared too but we can’t let them keep us out of our happy place!

You just need a stick for the "garden buddy." He/she likes you and you have to accept that while also carrying a stick so you can relax a little more. I had a "buddy" that thought I was lonely. He kept 'visiting' me at random hours and you can always feel them too before they pop up. I had to teach my 'buddy' that I did not want him too close to me. He felt so comfortable. The stick was my "method." Rakes, broom sticks, garden tools etc. positioned around the garden will save you from having to walk around with the stick. But with time your buddy will learn, just like mine that I ain't no joke. LOL. I lie. I ran every single time after I tried to scare it. AHAHAHAHAHA.
I'm done pruning also, I think pruning causes fungus
I love watching your videos. They are very entertaining and informative. And I’m with you on the compost bin dilemma. I built a diy bin like yours and I tried to turn it ONE time. It was a serious chore(my fault because I failed to make sure the vegetation was cut up into small pieces)…. So the bin has turned into a place to dump the yard waste and kitchen scraps, and time is gonna have to break it all down slowly cuz I do not plan on attempting to turn that pile again.

I make comfrey tea but I don’t apply it as often as I should… It just stinks to high Hell so it sits there until I force myself to “remember” it’s there. The free 99 price tag of it should be a motivator right? But yuck🤢!

Do you get flies or mosquitoes going in the big water container that you have or do you have some sort of lid?
I do but it’s not bad. No there isn’t a lid.
I use a few coffee grinds in my rainwater that’s not covered and it keeps mosquitoes out other critters out also, and the coffee grinds serves a little nitrogen to the plants.

I’ve added compost to my comfrey tea before but I’ve never made just compost tea. I’ve seen it on other channels though.
