  • In this video I show you how to strip and sanitise cloth nappies (diapers). You might do this if you have bought second hand nappies, or if you have been using your nappies for a while and they have begun to build up dirt and need a thorough deep clean. Cloth nappy care is important to extend the life of your stash and hopefully see them reused for many babies over their lifetime. This video is part of my Zero Waste Baby playlist where you can find other videos on how to have an eco friendly and low budget baby.
    Steps:
    1. Fill bath halfway with hot water (1/2 full bath is approx 40L of water) and add two cups (500ml) of non-biological laundry detergent, soak your nappies and inserts for 4 hours.
    2. Wring out nappies and inserts and rinse them on a rinse cycle in the washing machine.
    3. Use an anti-bacterial laundry cleanser (like Dettol) in the tray of your machine (amount as per instructions for your chosen cleanser), and run a normal wash cycle at 30 degrees C.
    4. Fill bath halfway with cold water, and add 1 cup (250ml) of laundry bleach, soak nappies and inserts for 30 mins. Use gloves when handling bleach.
    5. Wring out nappies and inserts (using gloves) and put them in washing machine on a rinse cycle.
    6. Wash your nappies at their recommended temperature (mine was 40 degrees C) on a normal wash cycle.
    7. Hang out on a line to dry - ideally outdoors in the sunshine.

Good luck! What type did you get to use? We had all in one Bambino Mios and a whole range of pocket nappies second hand to start with and I’ve found Velcro easier than poppers for me so we are swapping the popper pocket ones for more Bambino Mios now. It’s much easier than I thought to do cloth nappies in our daily routine - and Eli’s nappy rash he had from day one in the hospital cleared up immediately when we were settled back at home and started using the cloth nappies - so that was a plus! Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly! Xx

Thank you so, so much for such a well paced, step by step and clear video! Really needed this. Will be washing a whole bunch of second hand Bambino Mios the next three days 😊
