Make, mend and grow! Frugal small space living.
I am an upcycler, gardener, traditional crafts person and urban homesteader - I live with my husband James, our little baby Eli and our dog Charlie, and make or grow what I need, wherever I can. We live in a 410 square foot little terraced house on the edge of the Cotswolds in England.
This channel is a collection of frugal DIY projects around the home, kitchen and garden - things that anyone can make and do to save money and make the most of the resources you already have - to help you live large on a small budget.
We are three years into a project to live more “zero waste” - in other words choosing products and options in our everyday lives that use renewable or recyclable materials and packaging, creating low to zero waste to go into landfill.
I suffer with two chronic neurological conditions which leave me fairly disabled, requiring adaptations to make everyday tasks possible, which is a topic I sometimes discuss on this channel.

In this video I show you how I am creating a DIY peg doll nativity scene set for my baby boy to play with in years to come. As a child I treasure the memories of moving the wise men along to reach the stable on epiphany - and I wanted my baby boy to have that in his childhood too. When I started looking at nativity scene sets to buy they were all very adult in design and made from china or porc...

Why I am not a minimalist - minimalist vs hoarder - zero waste home

Are you more of a minimalist or a hoarder? Today I want to talk you through my approach to environmental living and why I am not a minimalist. Minimalism is great for environmental reasons (as well as keeping your home calm and clutter free), but with my DIY and budget recycling mentality I have decided to go down a different route that involves a lot more hoarding! In today’s video I show you how to make and preserve aloe vera gel from the plant leaves for use as a soothing skin treatment. Here we are using vitamin E oil and gelatine (or in my case vegetarian substitutes aga...

Very inspiring👍☺️💐
can you put it in your eye line? on the wet bit?
On the waterline? Depending on the oil type I’d say it’s safe for the waterline, but usually crushed charcoal is used for waterline makeup 😚
can you use charcoal instead of soot?
if it has lead in it it would not be safe
how can this be healthy? is the metal pan stainless steel?

Can this DIY vinegar kill molds on woods?
I made liquid soap from bar soap ( Dove brand) the soap does not produce suds. What can I add to rectify this?
A surfactant
Where's part 2?
Well said! I came across your channel looking for homemade shower gel 🙂 I've been a second hand rose for decades. I reuse and repurpose as much as I can, I try and shop local and I don't really make a lot of waste. Tip: cut up old rubber gloves for strong elastic bands. All my containers are mostly old coffee and pickle jars. I've got Tupperware that was my mum's. At least 50 yrs old 🙂 It's still going strong! My main gripe is that eco friendly products are SO expensive. I'm going to try and make soap next 😮😉
I did exactly this but a few weeks later it is slimmy almost is that normal
I feel like I have been transported back to the 90's
Lizzie, you're a person working toward a zero waste lifestyle, and sharing your experiences on CZcams. We love that 💓. Some people on CZcams are just filmmakers using zero waste as a subject to work with. There's a difference and your viewers see that ☺️
Thank you - that is beautiful! Xx
Excellent video. I have made a couple of bras last week (different pattern) but I enjoyed watching how you harvested fabric from older clothing pieces. Poppers are great. I use them in my jersey baby rompers for my business - I tested them over and over and they stay secure. Interfacing helps to keep them secure. Liked and subscribed x
Very informative. Thank you for sharing! 🙂👏🏽
So helpful! What zone are u in? I’m in zone 6b. Thank you! I’m looking forward to making this! 💚
No preservative for bacterial growth?
The PH of the soap is an inhibitor to bacterial growth - you can buy cheap PH test strips to check the PH of your finished liquid soap as it depends on the PH of the original bar soap too.
Thank you. Lovely video . I think this would be a good method! Maybe not quite as rustic as I was looking for, but Ive learned quite a bit! Thank you m'lady!
I will try to make it today and see
Have you read "Heal Your Headache"?...it's helped many people...also check out the Dizzy Cook: czcams.com/video/akTwcbUjmQg/video.html...I have vestibular migraine, took decades to get a diagnosis...seeing a nuero for a treatment plan next week. My ENT highly recommends the book I mentioned...irregular eating can be a trigger btw...as can not getting enough sleep, and there are many other triggers...figuring out your triggers and your trigger threshold can change your life...the Dizzy Cook shares her store as well as her treatment plan.
Thanks - I was actually re-diagnosed a few years ago with episodic ataxia and postural Orthostatic tachycardia syndrome rather than migraine as I never get the headache at all and have a family history of ataxia, but other viewers may get a lot of help from the link anyway so it’s great that you shared - thanks! Xx
@@LizzieDeanMakes With vestibular migraine I don't get a headache, as in there is no pain in my head at all, but it's the migrainous mechanism that causes all of my other symptoms which are symptoms of migraine. I did, back in my 30's get migraine with pain in the head, that lasted 9 years...that went away and I got abdominal migraine (pain in the abdomen, diagnosed as IBS) along with almost 3 decades of bppv, which went away, and finally at age 70, in 2020, began with these new current symptoms I'm having...apparently I was having vestibular migraine all along but never got the right diagnosis until recently. Dr. Teixido has a very good video explaining how vestibular migraine is often misdiagnosed and that it can take decades to get the right diagnosis..he also explained the progression of symptoms and mine were textbook classic.btw, I saw the neuro and am on Ajovy, a drug developed for migraine, approved by the FDA in 2018. It is a monoclonal antibody...it's an injection and can be done monthly as well as every 3 months. I just got the 90 day and a week in I find my balance issues are almost non-exsistent..I have to attribute that to the Ajovy I've had them for over 2 years and have never had a day without them until now.
Thank you for such a wonderful gardening video I love watching your garden outside you are very beautiful as well thank you so much have a great year
I've got this as well, had it 3 years but vestibular exercises greatly exacerbated it. Have been caffeine free and on nortriptyline for a month but there's been no improvement, does it get better as time goes on?
I’m so sorry to hear that! I was actually rediagnosed a few years back with Episodic Ataxia and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome so I can’t really answer your question but others in the comments might xx
@@LizzieDeanMakes oh I see, hope you're getting better if you have the right diagnosis. I'm beginning to wonder if I have been misdiagnosed too as my symptoms don't quite match what it says on the internet. Been 3 months now so I'm winding down the nortriptyline and waiting for another neurology appt, the first idiot discharged me without bothering to check if the medicine worked!!
What about reusable freezer bags? Put the meat in there squeeze all the air out Close it up tightly?
I never used mine for meat as we were vegetarian when I made them but in theory yes xx
Hello, this is a great Idea and i also made this freezers bags according to your instructions. But my bags feel very moist and oily and they are very inflexible. Is this normaly? Sorry for my bad english. Greetings from Germany
Hey Sabine depending on the amounts of oil and wax used you will get different results - wax will make them firmer and less flexible so maybe iron some of the wax away onto a rag? Xx
I really enjoyed your video! Everything was explained well and easy to understand, plus your voice is lovely as well!. I'm planning to purchase my own elderberry plants as none grow near me, so this video will help me make my own wine when I start harvesting.
Where’s part 2??
Sorry I never ended up filming the second half of this as I was very ill at the time I needed to siphon and bottle - I hope you can find another video for that part of the process and apologies that it never managed to materialise on my channel! Xx
A bit long, but I think that you basically said what ninety percent of us are thinking. Well Done! And you should hear my rants on militant Veganism.
How are your migraines after having your baby? I have vestibular migraine too and it’s gone wild since
I did not imagine a small, but otherwise normal, home when I saw the title of this video.
Everyone says this - I think it says a lot about space expectations in different countries of the world - my house is small for a family house here but it’s really not that unusually small for the UK - but any family living in a small space has to come up with space saving ideas and these are all practical ikea hacks that anyone can do so I figured it was a useful video for anyone interested in small space living whether building a tiny home on wheels or living in a studio flat or something else entirely xx
Would be nice to know which kind of wipe you ended up using/liking the most?
The flannel ones xx
Oh and the towelling ones we use at bath time instead xx
Thank you! I was very inspired by this and made several ones from old towels.
Mortgage overpayment; such a debate with so many other modes of investment available now, which were non existent years ago! I don’t have enough capacity to follow and keep up to date with stocks and crypto, so I may be best to overpay with my 10% allowance, over saving it in my bank account, but would be interested to know your thoughts and others perspectives, as always open to new ways of thinking!???
With interest rates on saving accounts so low at the moment overpaying on the mortgage is definitely the best of the safe options. Stocks and crypto type investment is much more of an exposure to risk so you really need to know your stuff - I also don’t keep track of enough to feel confident in that arena - I do know that overpaying my mortgage saved our home when I was signed off ill for over a year and that added security for the family is a key reason I really believe in overpaying the mortgage as the most prudent thing to do with my disposable income. I hope that helps
@@LizzieDeanMakes thank you
Very different for me. Vision issues blurr/dimming, cognitive slowing, can’t name random things, can’t be energetic, slowed reflexes, balance odd, drop shadow? Sounds about right. I’m not as bad off.. I can sometimes kick it.. but.. it’s been 3 weeks. I lose more days than I can win as of late.
Lovely! Thanks for sharing! I take the chance at this time of the year to wish you and your family & friends a very merry xmas and a happy New year!
So it's not a "how to" video, it a "look what I did" video.
Yeah, what a pity. There she already recorded a video but unfortunately not in a way that one can see something of the process.
Hello All. Can any advise the best time of year to pick the berries. With the world ready to implode through stupidity very soon, I want to start getting back to tradition living. Many thanks, stay safe and stay sane.
