My favourite thing about this movie was how Comic Booky it was. The serious movies are fine and all but I never would have expected some insane character like Starro in a modern movie.
The willingness to use ridiculous characters like Polka-Dot Man and Ratcatcher 2 and not wasting time trying to ground it in reality gave them a chance to shock us with beautiful moments like Ratcatcher 2's backstory. (Also those comic visuals were great)
Another writer could so easily have ruined Starro just by having someone look up anjd give some dry quip about not taking it seriously. I'm glad Gunn accepts the absurdity
This movie made me cry, and I cried a bit again watching this breakdown of why.
Bloodsport: The dysfunctional father
Ratcatcher 2: The guardian oldest sister
Polka Dot Man: The awkward middle child
Nanaue: The dumb youngest brother
Harley: The crazy but wholesome aunt
Peacemaker: The crazy deranged uncle
Rick Flag: The older cousin

Bruh on my 4th viewing, I actually cried at the Ratcatcher 2 flashback. Extremely well done
I have on all 3 of my viewings, and I work at a cinema and still everytime I see bloodsport pat Sebastian I cry a little

The acceptance of purpose also answers the question the very beginning of the movie sets up. Folsom prison blues opens the movie, and is a song offers hope to those who have a chance at redemption and have a purpose or acceptance that they’ve done horrible things and r irredeemable, spending the rest of their lives paying for that. Bloodsport realizes that he has purpose bringing it somewhat full circle.
None of that is in this movie. It’s more concerned with being funny than it is with telling a compelling story.

This is a trash movie that doesn’t belong in the DCEU and a prime example of how wb has no idea what the fuck it’s doing.

That Ratcatcher scene with the song Ratism always gets me. Such a deeply raw and emotional movie. Definitely one of the best comic book adaptations of our time.

Ok, this video made me cry. Awesome vid and I really loved your analysis of Bloodsport and purpose. The Suicide Squad is such a beautiful movie that really resonated with me.
I really connected with all the characters, they're all very well written and have their own development throughout the movie. Even side characters like the Amanda Waller's team get to shine ! Everyone was so humanized and intriguing, the dialogues and chemistry was fantastic and you could see that they appreciated each other by their act and not by simple info dumping like so many other big movies does... I came to adore a middle aged man with huuuge mommy-issues nicknamed PolkaDot man ! Rick Flag got interesting and I was *hurt* when he got killed by his comrade/friend :(

i completely agree i absolutely adored every aspect of this movie in such a rare way. the visuals were stunning and one of a kind. the characters all had these quirks that make them feel so endearing and so alive. when peacemaker betrays flag its genuinely heartbreaking. theres so much complexity that the movie offers you can go on for days about it. the way the first 10 minutes of the movie perfectly encapsulate the meaning of the suicide squad with team 1. the hesitation that peacemaker feels before trying to kill rat catcher because he never really questions why he kills. he kills just because he has an excuse to, which was apparent with flag but even moreso after being asked why he didnt just destroy the drive. polka dot man’s arc, even starro was given a sort of tragic end. theres so much there, so much more substance than your run of the mill cookie cutter yearly superhero movie. you could really feel the passion behind this movie.

My favorite scene in the movie was the bar scene. the music and the energy made that scene beautiful. the suicide squad were bonding and they looked like they were having so much fun to the point where they looked like friends.

Great vid, but I wanted to add a couple of things I've noticed.
- I like that even the people in the control room with Waller had character as well. Even though they did bet on who may die they jumped at helping team 2 save the innocent population of the city from Starro.
- I see Amanda Waller the villain of the movie. She controlled and manipulated everyone. She instructed Team 2 to kill everyone in the encampment to free Flag for Pete's sake!.
- I would hope that Peacemaker learned something from killing the one character. As you could see the conflict in his face (even if he went all kill mode moments later)
- For heart I'd put solely on Ratcatcher 2. She helped build trust and actual friendship with multiple members of the team. Even forgiving Nanaue at one point for almost nom nom her. She was a failed bank robber, not a killer. I'll be re-watching the movie tomorrow, but I'm fairly sure she didn't kill anyone that was human in the movie (Starro and the "zombified" humans no count and the one soldier may have been traumatized but don't think he would die from one rat).
Bratty observation- Bloodsport has indestructible knees and a lower back
Some constructive critism: You need to lower the volume on your background music, it's way too loud throughout most of the video.

My comment concerns your video on “earth to echo” because the comments are turned off. The movie has a lot of imperfections like you said. But that’s what I love about. As if your going on this journey with your best friends like it’s last time you will see them. Echo to me, wasn’t what the story was meant to be about. Honestly it didn’t really matter what dangerous adventure the kids were on that night. My favorite ride at a theme park is never the big roller coaster I came for, but usually the felling I get when I convince my parents to buy me a churro. Either way, I love this movie and every time that song by “this will destroy you”comes on I ball up.

I am majorly a marvel fan and i went to go watch this with a friend cause tbh i just wanted to see a movie, and i was absolutely blown away by this movie. it is so amazing and i really love it, it's basically my favourite superhero movie of 2021 alongside NWH and is easily my favourite dc movie (ive seen some but not that many). it could even be in my top superhero movies of all time i really just love it so much. i'm so happy i went to see it even though i had almost no interest in it before. it was so different from everything ive ever seen and it's so amazing for that, james gunn really did so much with this movie and it paid off so well.

I really loved the movie but Whilst I agree with most of ur points i feel that Starro was kinda underused. Like cmon if ur gonna bring starro and he doesnt even posses some superheroes to pin them against each other and he just walks around kaiju style and posseses some civilians. It would have been cool to have starro posses the team 1 who all died or even rick flag. Like imagine harley having to kill a starrofied captain Boomerang or Bloodsport having to kill Flag. Well Besides that its really great but man Starro was a bit wasted
I liked the movie and have seen it 2 times but saying it is a the best DCEU movie is a big stretch. Most people are overrating this movie just because it has gore and James Gunn directed it,
I like James Gunn and think his GOTG movies are my favorite of the MCU but TSS isn't a masterpiece. I'm not saying it's not a great movie but still has flaws, even movies like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises have flaws.
Some of the deaths were just for the sake of laughs, PolkaDot Man for example.
The score isn't that great, is memorable but doesn't comes close to other entries in the DCEU. It fits the tone of the movie but that's it.
The songs used weren't that memorable either.
The way Starro was defeated was also underwhelming.
Bloodsport's backstory was basically Deadshot with a blue suit.
I find that Harley Quinn was funnier in the first Suicide Squad.
This movie is much better than the studio cut of 2016 but its not flawless. There are many positive things about it, like violence, bloody action scenes just like what suicide squad should be. But there are some parts where it feels too much like a MCu movie with lots of useless jokes and humor. The humor should have been used in a balanced way. At some point it just feels like an R-rated version of guardians of galaxy which is not right. I was expecting more like a Spec-ops action thriller.
Dude, honestly, love the video. It's really really great. But dude, you gotta get better thumbnails. I don't wanna say this in a dicky way, so I'm sorry if it comes out that way. But it's so unoriginal for video essays thumbnail to consist of: colorful background, subject in the middle, vague white text centered with a shadow around it, and logos in the corners. People have seen that multiple times and it gets so tedious and becomes uninteresting. Any time i see thumbnails like that I think "what can I get from this video essay that I didn't get from the other 20 channels with the same thumbnail." Again, I don't mean to be a dick. And great video nonetheless.
