    The Bogo-Indian Defense is a very strong weapon for Black against 1. d4, based firmly on positional principles that guarantee black a good game in the long-term.
    The Bogo-Indian is a popular opening at the Grandmaster level however it is very uncommon at the beginner and intermediate levels because many of the positional concepts are advanced and difficult to grasp at first glance. However, spend a little time with GM Damian Lemos and soon you'll be able to deploy this opening as your surprise weapon to start picking up some wins at your chess club.
    The opening starts with the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 Bb4+ and is named after Efim Bogoljubow. In this video, GM Damian Lemos is joined by FM WIll Stewart to explore this interesting opening. They particularly take the time to investigate how Black should proceed when White decides against 3.Nf3 and instead goes for 3.g3.
    This is one of White´s most popular opening choices in the queen-pawn system - the Catalan Opening with an early kingside fianchetto.
    The Catalan Opening may look harmless at a superficial glance, but it is actually an extremely dangerous opening for White and Black should be prepared to handle it accordingly.
    GM Lemos demonstrates a very simple and effective method for Black to easily achieve equality (or more!) from the opening with energetic play. Not only is the Bogo-Indian Defense based on a very solid positional foundation, but it is also an extremely effective surprise weapon!

    why are there so many DVD's out there nowadays with a title that claims to "crush" or "bash" or "dominates" an opening....it must be amateurs who buy these DVD's because any decent chessplayer knows that for example the Bogo-Indian is neither a surprise weapon nor an opening that crushes White...those arrogant titles are out there only to lure weaker chess players into buying low-class DVD's...it's the same wth many many chess books nowadays....there are few authors who are writing classy stuff.

    Thanks! You've got the right idea, if white tries to push c5 there to gain space - black will definitely get an edge with the immediate ..b6 as white's center is going to be undermined in a big way (white can't play b4 due to ..a5 - as a3 isn't possible with the Ra1 undefended). Cheers, Will

    Liking the new format. I think the they both bring great thoughts to the table. Very instructional!

    ..a5 is possible there if you want to aim for complications (..a5 is an useful move for black in these slav-type pawn structures) - but ..Qb6 is a very solid way of attacking the loose Qb4, if Qxb6 axb6 and black has achieved definite progress with an open a-file for his Ra8. Cheers, Will

    hey guppy - yes Qe7 is definitely still playable but that usually leads to a pretty different type of game (if white captures Bxb4 Qxb4 Qd2 then black can play ..a5 instead of ..c5)

  • @MeneerVerspiller
    @MeneerVerspiller Před 10 lety

    18:37 you can play Qb6, Bb7 and c5 and you can hold onto the pawn and you are very comfortable. With a knight on a3, you miss moves like a4 to attack b5. Instead of Na3 I think Qb4 is the most accurate move. Then Nbd2, a4, Ne5, Qxc4 or Nxc4 and rooks on c1-d1 is the plan. From d2 the knight can hop to c5 or e5 if needed, which is not possible from a3.

    Thanks guys! I enjoyed the dual commentary in this video.
    After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 Bb4+ 4.Bd2
    What is the advantage of playing 4...Be7 instead?
    Statistics show that this move has changed white's odds of winning from 1/3 down to 1/4 (& over 1/2 games end in draw).
    I don't understand why.

      You are welcome! I discovered the hard way about letting white get the knight on D5 vs a 2300 recently, when he took with the queen on D2 I proceeded with the D6..E5 plan instead of the D5 line which you show... it was devastating.

    hey man we´re just trying to jazz it up on our end of things and make chess dvds as exciting as we can. also i´ve got to disagree with you - the Bogo-Indian is definitely an uncommon opening (good surprise factor there) and it is extremely dangerous for white if he doesn´t know the plans. I recommend you look at a few recent games by chinese super-gm wang hao who busts out the bogo fairly often, with ¨crushing¨ effect!

    great video! i'm really loving these opening videos because you do a great job picking instructive games. it's really helpful to see the tactical ideas/lines that come up later on in the game. one question though: in the position at around 16:00, instead of white castling, if they push the pawn to c5 is it correct for black to still continue with b6?

    Just spitballing here, but at 15:20 is Qb4 a bit annoying for black if they want to castle? Qe7 then Kxe7 seems a little jarring but I suppose with Queens off it might not matter. Thoughts?

  • @YtubeUserr
    @YtubeUserr Před 11 lety

    Noooo, the knight on e5 is stronger than the bishop at f3. The bishop at f3 has a weak color complex because of the pawns. Exchanging on f3 would lose the pressure and the edge (i think).

  • @cliffescompound
    @cliffescompound Před 11 lety

    Qe7 is perfectly fine, yes. The black King is safe and strong on e7. Qb4 is a mistake in my opinion as it just loses a tempo. In this position, there is nothing to be gained from trying to prevent black from castling.

  • @daveflamenco4085

    Nice video ! After white bishop defending the check is it wrong to play queen e7? I kept playing this variation of the bogo indian or maybe the nimzo but I don't finish to get a comfortable middle game...Saludos desde Argentina Damian ! I ask in English (although my English is a bit bad) in case someone could answer my question xd

  • @PocketJaces
    @PocketJaces Před 11 lety

    Thanks for the reply. After both a5 and Qb6 which both seem okay, is Qa3 for white an option, still annoyingly stopping black from castling? And if so, what to do to counteract it? Maybe both a5 and Qb6 so if Qa3 black can play Qb4?

  • @TheBigGuppy

    I haven't played the Bogo in 25 years. I think the move vs 4. Bd2 used to be 4...Qe7 But I could be really wrong on that. I found the defense didn't really fit my style.
