I feel like I’ve actually learned a lot about openings from these videos. It’s important to understand the ideas and what each persons goals are!
I know it seems stupid that I am on a opening lesson video and saying this, but theory kills the game.
This is the second video I have watched from you guys and my game is gradually improving and I am starting to see quite a number of important things that I didnt know mattered in opening and also in maintaining good positions. Thank You, you officially have one more life time fan

Discovered a neat little trap!
At 31:00, after the piece exchange and 8. b4, Black can play Na4, and if 9. Qb3 Ne4 and the queen captures the knight, 10... Qf6 hitting the rook gives White an immediate +2 point advantange.
If White attempts to save the rook with 11. Rb1, Black has a forced mate in 2 starting with Qc3+. If White moves Ra2, Qf2+ followed by Nc3+ forks the king and queen.
The best response by White is to just concede the exchange and play 11. Nf3.
You are working with what if's from white side. After b4 Na4, white would continue with Qc2 preventing Ne4 and attacking Na4. The best move for black would be Nc6 which is badly placed for the rest of the game

At 42:00, if Black blunders with Ra2????, White wins with g5+ forcing Qxg5, then Nxg5 with the threat of Nxf7# or Nxe6#. Black's only defense is ... Rxc1+, Rxc1 Kxg5, but ... Black's just down a rook AND a bishop.
Ben Finegold is known for this opening. Legend has it that long ago he made a T-shirt that said Qc2!

Yeah perhaps can be understood but I dont know. Its a bit annoying and for its not so much about trout , but seems nervous for me... modtly there is no need for the body to need water for talking... most people can talk for very long time witout needing to sip water every 3 minutes. When that said.. when something feels annoying to you. Tho only good way to handle is not to let your mind get attached to it... just ignore it or smile/laugh about it. After all we are here to learn chess and this variations are briliantly explained.. so lets look at the positive... only.. i cant get my self to remember it all.

At the second game, he can trade queens and then place his knight on c3. That way he doesnt lose the knight. Am I wrong?

True. But this is presuming white plays exd3, which I think was the wrong defense to begin with. Could white just play Rd2

I like a big pawn majority, central control, 2 bishops, and dont mind double c pawns
At 32:50 What's wrong with exchanging the queens? After axb4 black could have saved it's knight by playin Nc3. Or am I missing something?

True, but the results overwhelmingly favor White after this, I guess basically because the c-pawn is a monster and White will be able to activate his position. For instance 13. Qb4 Qxb4+ 14. axb4 Nc3 15. Bb2 Nb5 16. e4 Bd7 17. Bxf6 gxf6 18. exd5 exd5 19. Bxb5 Bxb5 20. Ne2 Kd7 21.Nd4 (1-0 in 43 moves, Anastasian-Ifek 1992). Still, it probably should have been mentioned.

8:14 you say the main move here is e3. What is wrong with Bishop e5 right away ? with the idea of Bishop d4 or f3 to either chase the knight or force the exchange ?
In that first game near the end (at 28:03) didn't black have a perpetual check moving back and forth on c1 and c2?

If black plays d5 at 3:54 then why not play Qa4 forking the king and the bishop on b4?
Strangely this guy seemed to copy the same commentary of Kingscrsher's 10 yr. old video of the same Kasparov vs Spassky game. Weird.
How does bishop E5 help at 9:48, and also are you allowed to king side castle if ur king side rook is under attack?? If Bishop E5 then what about knight E4-> G5, discovered attack on the queen and attack on the H1 rook

Hi, I think you mean Knight e4 to g3 as a discovered attack on the queen but after:
--Qc1 (or d2) NxRh1
--BxRh8
white will be a piece up because the knight is trapped.
Also, you are allowed to castle if your rook is attacked. You just can't castle if:
1. The king is in check.
2. The king would be put into check by castling.
3. The king has already moved.
4. The rook on the side you want to castle has already moved.

If Nd7 is played, the Queen is just gonna take the Bishop on a6 (... Nd7, Qxa6) - that knight is the only piece defending the bishop on a6.

is there a specific attack (? Catalan, ? London, ? other)
that works best against the Nimzo-Indian defense

At around 17:50 after cxd4 why is it 'clumsy' to take with the e pawn but better to take with a piece?
Because you don't want open lines towards your king when your opponent is going to castle
@@Karpnado as he never castled this makes sense in hindsight but otherwise cxd, exd results in a semi open file which isn't immediately exploitable by black I think.

we are learning the classical variation. White plays classical Qc2 against Black's Nimzo Indian.

why is the control over E4 so important?
There are basically three kinds of openings from white's point of view:
A. The ones where white can play both e4 and d4
B. The ones where white can play or e4 or d4
C. The ones where white don't play e4 or d4 as first moves.
We usually think that A>B>C ; the nimzo-indian defence wants white to stay in the B category, and that's why they want to control the e4 square after white's first move 1. d4

2nd: I really don't know why chess guys always drink something during their lectures or videos, sometimes drink a lot, and I must hear the frequent swallowing sound! Pretty annoying and disruptive!
The video is great but the constant drinking opening and closing the bottle is quite annoying. Imagine playing a classical game against him in a tournament! Maybe he just came back from a hike in the desert.
Good lesson, thanks - the drinking noises are really annoying though... I know public speaking is tough, but please cut these out or smth.
How many openings and variations exist? Google says upwards of 1300....? Can that be real? These grandmasters memorized all of them? What kind of IQ is that? I can’t even make sense of these tutorials. I feel like I watched, 10 openings in the last 6 weeks and all I can remember is the first 5 moves of each. Then I’m lost.
They play one opening and they know that o e opening very well. They also are very skilled at the game and had a lot of experience with chess. They don't know all 1300 very well more like maybe top 20 maybe less I'm not sure tbh.
@@garrysmith1029my chess coach is an IM. He said the most common attribute masters in the 2200-2300 rating have is that they memorized at least 50 key games played by top GMs.

Some of us teachers have to. Usually because we're using our voice incorrectly, but those habits are seriously hard to change. Have been trying unsuccesfully for 10+ years.
