- During the 2020 bubble playoffs, in game 6 of that series against Dallas, Landeskog suffered a freak accidental injury when Cale Makar’s skate cut him in the right quad. At that time, it didn’t look that serious, at least I would never have predicted the problems this would cause but it was likely the start of what has been a long road to recovery.
He had to get surgery as a result of that cut on his quad and then, roughly a year later in March of 2022, he underwent surgery again, this time on his right knee and missed much of that season playing in a career low 51 games. But, he was back in time for the playoffs for what was an incredible run for the Avs who would win the Stanley Cup led by their captain, Landeskog.
After celebrating the championship last off season, to start training for the current year, he had nagging issues and eventually had to undergo another minor surgery in October that led to Colorado captain missing the entire 2022 2023 season. To make it worse, just weeks ago, as the playoffs were set to begin, it was announced that he would also be out for the playoffs as well.
That in itself was terrible news to hear but again the assumption, at least for me, was that rehab was just taking longer than expected and that he’d be back stronger and ready to go for next season.
Well, today we got another update and it was not good. It has been announced that for the 2nd consecutive year, Landeskog will not be playing as he will miss the entire 2023-24 season and you just absolutely hate to see this.
He is set to undergo another surgery, tomorrow. It is a Cartilage transplant to work on and repair the cartilage in his right knee. This is the same surgery Lonzo Ball recently underwent and in the hockey world, the same surgery Marc Methot got from the same doctor that will be doing Landeskogs. I cover it all in todays NHL video.

From the quote you provided: 70% of athletes who get this surgery return to their pre-injury level of sport. Hopefully Landeskog is in that 70% instead of the 30% like Methot.
It also took that 70% up to two years to come back.
Doesn't specify the level, he was at the highest level in the top 6 of a championship club. A minor leaguer would be called an athlete for this statistic
we all love you gabe. glad you got to lift the cup. goal was achieved.
indeed
Avs fan
2nd best captain we've had
I'm gonna be gutted if he's done
But if he is. At least he went out a fucking legend for this club. His last shift is one of the greatest last shifts in hockey.
Blocking a shot in the final seconds of the game that won us the cup.
O'Captain my captain
I sh*t my pants when he lost his blade on that shift
wish for the best.... but who knows...
I’m not an avs fan but I love every player in the league and it always sucks to see something like else happen especially to a team’s captain. Hoping and praying that all will be good for him so he can continue to play.
you dont wis hthat on anyone right..
If this is how it all ends, I'm glad that Landy at least got to lift the Cup. I will never forget what you've done for this team and I hope the surgery goes well! Love you Captain Gabe❤💙
right... atleast he experienced that
the avs are my second team and i missed having him on the ice all year. obviously i don’t want to see him retire, especially so young, but at the end of the day his health and quality of life are more important than anything. i hope he’s able to make a full recovery and i’d love to see him back with the team in the near future.
yea... these injuries must be the most frustrating there there is
sad news. at least if his career is over he'll have lifted the cup in his last game, what a finish!
He sounded confident in his interview today that he will make a full recovery
I mean, that's cool and all but it really means nothing. He also seemed confident in September that he'd play this year.
@@Kanders190 I think attitude means everything, said he never considered retiring and will come back at full strength where many would give up
@@cal8362 We're talking about biology, something scientific. This is not something up for debate, these are scientific facts. How our bodies recover from an injury involves several factors that are out of your control.
@@Kanders190 What is up for debate is how someone's attitude effects their rehab. Going into it hungry to return to competition is undeniably better than giving up on competition and not taking the rehab as seriously.
he isnt gonna sit around crying is he?
Man. Brutal for Landy.
Man is an absolute legend and a Colorado HoF’er who will get his number retired in the rafters and will be involved in the Leadership, be it in a suit or in a sweater, for as long as he so desires.
If this was the last we’ve seen of him on the ice, hope he can recover enough to skate with his kids and not hurt everyday the rest of his life.
correct.... these injuries are nasty on the long term
He has only ever had over 70 points in one season. The dude isn't a legend. He is good hockey player and a better captain, but not a legend. He is actually below average in scoring/assists compared to the majority of the leage year after year. The Avs really need to look at trading him.
@@zacharyicenhower3807 what a shit filled comment
@@zacharyicenhower3807 LEGEND
Well, there are many worst ways to go, like not having a contract in place that gives you and your family millions of dollars for the next several years or not having won the Stanley Cup. He at least got to play until 30 too, which isn't too bad. It sucks for sure, but there are at least many positive points to consider.
That’s so sad, I might not be a avalanche fan but I still respect every other player. Hope he gets better. ❤
as an avs fan, and just a gabe fan, i dont even know what to say tbh. I dont want to say hes gone but I had a bad feeling after he had to get surgery after winning the cup but it really feels like hes just trying not to add anything to the dumpster fire of a season we had this year
You're a champion. Go take it easy and enjoy life.
As a long time AVS fan and watched them since I was a kid I hate for this to happen to such a skilled player, with that being said. I think it's time for him to focus on his health and family and retire a champ and not a washed up player. Hockey is a very violent brutal sport and having /needing this kind of surgery doesn't make it easier competing, especially for a championship team like the Colorado Avalanche. He should retire and give his spot to a player that still can compete on high level and no drag his team down waiting and hoping he'll even bee half of the skill level he once was.
As a lifelong Penguins fan, I really hope Landeskog doesn't have a career like Mario's with the injuries and health in general. Sucks for him, and Avs fans.
Wow. This sport is absolutely brutal on people who are otherwise in the prime of their lives. I can’t imagine. I haven’t seen the interview, but he looks devastated… Very sad.
I have shed actual real tears of sadness because of this.
I can’t imagine the mental weight that would have on him. Being captain of your team, wanting to play on the sidelines with a stupid injury like that missing 2 seasons. That would be horrible, I mean scratch the fact how much money he makes and just won the cup. I’m sure he’s still been stressing
not an avs fan but im so sad for him. at least he got to lift the cup😢
I hope he makes a full recovery ❤️🩹 I love Landy ❤
man this is saddening 💔
I think it's likely Landeskog has played his last game as an Av. Even if he makes it back, the chances are slim he'll be able to hang again at NHL level. Perhaps it will be a blessing in disguise for Colorado because they'll be able to use that 7 million to retool the team.
Glad Landy got to lift the cup. Not glad the Avs signed a ridiculous contract for him even before his injury and he needs to go.
I had an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon yesterday, so I had to ask. He was not optimistic. Fifty-fifty, at best, on getting back to the NHL.
If dedication alone could make the difference, we would see Landy back in 2024-25.
No matter what happens re hockey, I hope he’s able to have a pain-free, active, and long life going forward.
The swedes in NHL doesn't give up. Landeskog will be back soon better than ever.
I mean. Would i take an 80% Landy? Sure. I'd rather have a 100% Landy. But at least he got his cup before all this happened
Can't see him returning. Wrong side of 30 too by the time he returns.
reminds me of forsbergs problems at the same age
Gabby should give captency to MacKinnon...
Landeskog’s prolly gon retire I hate to call it
Not having our Captain has been a huge loss, one that most people won't really understand. Landy has been the lifeblood of this team mentally for years, and on top of that he's one of the best wingers in the league, and adds a level of physicality to our team that we sorely miss. I truly hope this surgery will bring him the resolution he is looking for so he can have a good quality of life and come back to play for the team he loves.
What happens to the contracts of the injured players like that? Is he receiving 100%? What are the rules?
I'm pretty sure that NHL contracts are 100 % covered by insurance, this usually comes up when they want the players to go to the Olympics.
I'm a huge leafs fan but more importantly I'm a hockey fan. Never like to see this for any player(except Brad Marchand) jk even him I wouldn't wish this on. Hope he heals well and has at least one more good year just not against the leafs.
AVS👍♥️,Gabe🍀🍀🍀♥️
Avs have a debacle on there hands for the offseason.
I mean they are literally at 14 million in cap with 24 free agents.
Then you have nuke situation of the hotel room.
Then you have landeskog health you gotta worry about.
I think bednar was right tho when asked about landy coming back. Who knows if he’s gonna be the same player. The leadership in the room is def gonna be missed.
I would love to have landeskog back but can he return back to elite status.
Let’s say both nuke and landy are gone. The avs then literally have one line. And have to find a whole second line.
It’s gonna be interesting how they navigate this offseason
i count 17 million in cap on cap friendly and 8 UFA's, plus the potential of landeskog being on LTIR all year allowing colorado to go 7 million over the cap
Sad news indeed.
Even if he is in that 70% at the age he is at with a 2 year recovery his return chances are slim to none this is coming from a col fan
Afraid to say... but this may been a career ending injury 😢
Landeskog plays too hard for his size just like Forsberg did, he needs to tone it back a little bit, if he ever comes back.
Mack should be captain his career is done
He is not retiring
I thought that was Connor Mcdavid in the thumbnail 💀
Who would want the same team to win again. Literally so boring.
What really happened to Nichuskin?
Don't know.
It'll be big news when it breaks. Until then, it's unfair to all parties involved to speculate.
*Interesting Fact: Him and Oscar Klefbom, have both been out for "multiple seasons" now with progressive surgical assistance.*
Time to hang the skates up
Tough mofo
Avs should trade Valeri Nichushkin to the Lightning 😉
Why?
First
Yup he’s done. This is good news for other teams in the conference ngl
Him being gone is bad for hockey
@@Cuhhhhhhhhhhhh 💯 hope he gets well soon
Coward comment.
geez... the hockey life aint easy
