Given how many woke movies have flopped in 2022, I would say this is the best Hollywood year of the century so far.
With all the respect but "woke" Isn't the only thing that ruins movies
Well next year is gonna be wokest show ever and i'm glad my wallet is closed for next 50 years, entertainment is dead after 2015, that's it
@@SubZero-hs9xc in fact it’s been shown woke isn’t a problem at all. Peacemaker and the boys are woke af and they are highly rated. The problem is more garbage, people don’t like to watch refuge.
2023 gonna be the bestest ever!
2023 will be year of demolishing movie theaters worldwide. Can't wait! ☺ 👍
"...That's all I've got for this year, go away now."
This line was a more impactful subversion of my expectations than anything Hollywood has done in recent memory.
Full clip of what, botski?

Rian Johnson, take note.
Truly one of the CZcamsr lines ever
Tolkien would’ve hated that show so much but he would’ve been so happy to see the fans speaking up for him in his absence.
Tolkien would have hated Jackson's LotR trilogy as well. Peter Jackson doesn't understand Tolkien any better than the people behind Rings of Power. One need only look at Jackson's utter contempt of the character Gimli and the four Hobbits to understand this.
I'm gonna be honest Tolkien would probably hate every adaption of his work, LotR is a odyssey of his life. The horrors of war, the weakness of man but also beauty of humanity, and a real love ballad between him and his wife. All we can do is try to honor the creativeness he had, Jackson was all about doing that. Amazon's show represents everything disgusting about where cinema has found itself.
@@amatthew1231 I don't believe Jackson tried to honor Tolkien. It's clear Jackson had contempt for many of the characters in LotR including but not limited to Gimli, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Gandalf the Grey (Jackson treated Gandalf the White much better). Jackson has a history disparaging the "little people" of fantasy. He thinks the only good guy races that belong in fantasy are Men and Elves.
Man I love the part where a fanbase is so strong to have it heard.
@@junglemoose2164 When did he say that?
Frank Herbert once said: "There's an unwritten pact between you and the reader. If someone enters a bookstore and sets down hard earned money (energy) for your book, you owe that person some entertainment and as much more as you can give"
If fucking Hollywood took notes from this more often, then we wouldn't have to put up with the same amount of shit we've gotten these past few years.
nowadays it's been more like "If someone enters a theater and sets down hard earned money for your movie, you owe that person as much moral patronizing and virtue signaling as you can give"
Well at least Denis Villeneuve got that message from Herbert and kept it in his mind when adapting Dune. I hope the sequels are gonna be as good !
Frank Herbert never said that. And readers aren't fucking owed anything just because they paid money for the book. Authors are free to insert whatever their beliefs are into their own writing, they're not a vending machine that will spit out whatever you want just because you paid them money. Art, literature and cinema is a reflection of the real world, not just entertainment and escapism. And I don't think you've even read any of Frank Herbert's books beyond the first Dune book, because a lot of the messages he inserted into his books would piss the whole lot of you
@@DG-gx4sg The Dune saga is an extremely critical reflection on social engineering and the trust we place in political elites lol, arguably in fact a cynical reply to Asimov’s Foundation books. You’re not supposed to think that the Bene Gesserit plan succeeding is a good thing, and the fact it blows up in their face (twice) is the whole point.
What exactly about Herbert’s message is so antithetical to people here? I don’t think he’d like the current state of Hollywood at all

It's lucky that Tom Cruise is still jacked, because he carried the most of the weight of movie entertainment on his shoulders in 2022.
And most of all he has aged unlike so many other celebs.

Eh. Maverick was fun but not great. Maybe 8/10 for me. Avatar was a 6/10. I enjoyed Everything Everywhere and Bullet Train more. Also, liked Marcel the Shell. Andor and Cyberpunk were the best Tv shows I saw this year. Still need to finish HoD and check out All Quiet.
He is probably the last great film star alive ...
A film that wasn’t really mentioned here but I think should be given credit is shockingly, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. A movie literally no one had expected to do well since Dreamworks Animation had really been lacking the past few years but it was a genuine compelling mature film with unique animation and good character development. I highly suggest anyone to give it a chance, regardless of what age you are, as Puss in Boots can also be best enjoyed as an adult.

A wise man once said:
“It’s not about money, it’s about sending a message”.

And then the audiences sending their message through money.
Go Woke, Go Broke!
And then what happened:
"EVERYTHING BURNS"
But not "THE message"
Has to be said, "Maverick," was also genius to bring Val back and to make his character the tear jerker in the movie. Worked very well. I cried. Just like Pixar "used to" make me do until t-h-e-m-e-s-s-a-g-e

They are engaged in a massive social engineering operation. Their goal is to normalize the woke ideology.
@@justinmadrid8712 Resist. By all means possible.
I think the rings of power was a turning point not just because of how united Tolkien fans turned out to be, but also because the amount of shit we've been subjected to reached a critical mass and people just decided they'd had enough. Besides, this final quarter of the year was packed so full of shit that it obliterated any scrap of patience that was left. We reached the bottom of the barrel, and while I don't doubt that hollywood will try and dig deeper, I doubt there's going to be enough money to keep this up for much longer.
I sure hope you're right I like going to the movies but it's been painful this year
The thing about "reaching the bottom of the barrel" thinking it can't go any deeper can be immediately disproven by just lifting the barrel...
There’s gotta be a breaking point where enough is enough. Although it wouldn’t surprise me that as these movies fail, the govt will keep bailing out companies like Disney like they do with airlines and banks
That and the fact that Tolkein isn't Star Wars or Marvel. Don't get me wrong I love all of them but Tolkeins works are something special, genuine universal literary classics and this was just a step too far for the Hollywood hacks
lol after they ruined the Star Wars franchise and f'ed over those fanbases they got very hrny & couldn't wait to attack the Lord of the Rings, the most sacred and ancient modern fantasy franchise, they thought it would be well received since they could throw nearly a billion into it to make it magically great right?
The sad thing is it just exposed how all of the modern writers are several realms below the likes of Tolkein, GRRM, Stephen King (although horror is an entirely different genre and its infinitely easier to condense his stories into decent films), even if they are given seven fold the budget & time, resources that the biggest Hollywood blockbuster films are given they can't make a decent TV show that fully respects all that came before it.
Respct for LOTR fans for starting this and inspiring courage in other fandoms
"Theirs will be like the falling of small stones that starts an avalanche in the mountains."
*chef's kiss*
LotR fans? Where?
Paid shills are worthless, real fans win by doing absolutely nothing. One of the main messages still resonates today: The titular lord of the rings should be destroyed, no race should hold absolute power over any other, we should reject all their globohomo ploys and preserve tradition, which is there to fix problems in the first place, you remove tradition, the problems come back. Praise Tolkien, even if he was never knighted, labels are meaningless when they require approval from disgusting bloodsuckers.

I have to say, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish was also a welcome surprise. It's everything that was once great about DreamWorks, and everything worth emulating from innovators like those behind Spiderverse and others, and I'm excited for the future of animation as a whole because of it.
Really? The trailer looks awful, by which I mean the animation seems shoddy.
@@GaryMillerUK The animation seemed to be a rendition off Spider-verse which is a style other animated movies are emulating. I haven’t seen it but it’s reviews are practically universally good. People joke that it has higher audience scores than the new Avatar movie.

Spider verse was not great... once again, undermind original character (Parker is defeated and fat and hopeless) and replace with minority and female characters... barf.
Top Gun: Maverick, was possibly the first theater experience I had in 10 years that motivated me to want to instantly watch it again. It was/is a genuine throwback to 80's/90's action films where the movie's purpose isn't to always be realistic, but to to be an entertaining journey. And as a sequel that was over three decades removed, it was a proverbial home run and then some, without any "woke" nonsense, and thoughtful touches in the plot along the way (the Maverick/Iceman scene was tasteful and heart-tugging for real-life reasons, and it was tastefully woven into the movie very well).
The storyline was surprisingly worked out well, walking a fine line between callbacks to the first movie while staying fresh to modern times without drowning in it. And then there is the superb cinematography and audio mixing that made the movie a top-notch IMAX-ready thrill ride.
What may slowly be forgotten about the movie is that it was scheduled to be released in Spring of 2020, but Covid happened, and Tom Cruise insisted it be delayed for theatrical release because he didn't want it to go straight to streaming like Tenet or many other movies did when the theaters were shuttered. In retrospect, Tom Cruise looks like a genius because he KNEW that this movie was best for a theater release, and after seeing it in the theater, I absolutely agree with that.
It also gives us time to reflect on who consistently gives us good action movies. Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves are some of the only ones still doing it and not requiring a vomit bag.
The only thing I dislike about this movie is the lack of butt shots 😬

Agreed: be quiet and entertain me. Kinda bass ackwards in their view that we the serfs are being thankfully entertained by the kings.
Yeah, funny thing...court jesters were basically the only person allowed to mock the monarch and, couched in jests, confront him with his failings. Modern Hollywood is trying to do the same thing - but aiming it at the commoners, rather than the people actually in power.
It's easy to kick down, it takes courage and conviction to kick up, both things court jesters used to have, but neither of which modern Hollywood knows the first thing about.
You don’t hear how fuckin angry this guy is inside. I notice that will all the guys: RK, Jeremy, HvB, Quartering. They crack and show how crazy they are inside. These are the guys you go to all the time for entertainment/news?
What.A.Speech.
Despite this year's many flaws in movies and tv shows, I love how happy the Drinker sounds that audiences are actually starting to "fight back" against *the message* and bad products.
Also, that "Go away now" sounded so much more positive than usual.
I really wish the Northman got more acclaim than it did. When it doesn't have such a large success compared to other safer projects, we get less and less of these fine art pieces.
This is the exact same thing that happened in hollywood once before (I think it was back in the 1930s but I'm a little unsure about the dates), where they tried to dictate all film making by a set of idiotic rules.
Short version, it didn't work and had to be abandoned. And history will repeat itself this time as well because some people outright refuse to learn from it.
It was more speech* vs reality. Hard to say Thor, Wakanda, Strange where not commercial successes considering they made the top ten net earnings at the box this year.
Carl Johan, Are you referring to the Hayes motion picture codes? If so, I agree only partially. While the morality codes definitely curtailed creativity, they simultaneously fostered them. @@Nobody-df4is I believe both positions are right to an extent. I believe 2023 will be the year where many studios (and fans) decide to either continue on the path and go all in, or to course correct. Those who keep going won't even bother pretending that messaging and ideology aren't their motivating drivers, with continued funding being relatively easy (funding, not profits) while those that course correct will see profits return to position as being the primary objective, but may struggle with funding in the short term as a number of financiers pull out in response to studios who no longer tow the line.

But when my DAD says it...!
Having two young kids, I’m not able to watch much television these days, movies or shows. Luckily, I found your channel this year, Will, and it made me realize I’m not missing much.
For me, 2022 despite it’s flaws, had some pretty memorable media to give. The Final Season of Better Call Saul gave an emotionally satisfying conclusion that shows you can stick the landing twice with a series, if you plan it right. While The Batman and Sonic 2 promised the beginning of two franchises being treated with care, showing that there’s still storytellers that respect the material they’re given. These and other films like Top Gun Maverick and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once are reminders that no matter how much of a beating certain stories take by writers who don’t care, the passion by others will always stand out and succeed.
Well said. Hated to see Better Call Saul end...it was great.
What Hollywood forgot, were the lines uttered by Mark Linn-Baker to Peter O’Toole in “My Favorite Year”- “They meant a lot to me! Those silly goddam heroes meant a lot to me! It doesn’t matter if was a fantasy, it worked.”
Boys and young men, who go to a lot of movies, want to see themselves as a hero. Whether it be a paladin-like Luke Skywalker or a rascally Han Solo, a flawed Boromir, who gains redemption, or a calmly strong Aragorn, young men need heroic role models. When you deconstruct these heroes or the related genres, you alienate these young men who hang onto their dollars.
Agreed about people wanting to see themselves in a positive light. This goes for everyone.
This is the problem. This is where "woke" becomes a bad thing. In the hands of an honest creator, who was left to tell their story in their own way, you get good stories. A lot of the disappointments on this list could have been very good. The drinker likes to villanize "the message".
I would submit that the real problem is "the formula".
Essentially, it's the habit of studios etc to try to hijack the current social trends by taking the most visible and shallow aspects of an idea, and shove them into cookie cutter tent pole scripts, with no actual understanding of what they're actually about. So they all come off ham handed, hackneyed or just dumb.
what you describe is heroes journey. deconstruct is not bad, but it's need to written careful because it's much harder to do. problem is, most of people didn't understand what is deconstruction vs reconstruction. those 2 is in different categories.
i give you example, civil war is deconstruction but batman v superman is reconstruction. sadly people called BvS as deconstruction because that's what critics are saying and audiences is just parroting them without knowing the differences.
and people praised civil war because they felt it's much better movie despite it deconstruct character and the sokovian act never ended. while in BvS ultimate cut, it's on life everything what happened from beginning to ending without making character ended in negative like civil war did.
as BvS, there few issues but it never been big as civil war did. sadly people want superman to be saving cat top of tree and puff piece editioral wrote how good superman iswithout challenge him as character
@@boboboy8189 one of the best examples for proper deconstruction of tropes in my book: the last unicorn and the cabin in the woods. that shit works with the prime ingredients of knowledge, respect and care towards the sources and references - so exactly what seems missing in lots of movies and series produces for "modern audiences". if i had a cent for every filmmaker that hates the stories they chose to adapt, i could fill them into a massive sock and beat the everloving fuck out of these idiots

Luckily books will largely survive the nuclear war. Streaming will not.
Waiting for Pillar of Garbage to tell us why we are wrong and Rings Of Power, She Hulk, Willow, and The entirety of The MCU now is apparently actually good.
My fear is that audiences are smart enough only to resent media with 100% pure concentrated hatred for us. Most audiences didn't seem to notice that before the "woke" era, we were still being fed 75% hateful indoctrination. In the coming years, these same rich activists and corrupt studios will be at the same jobs. They will still be selling us much of the same propaganda, only they will make it fun and "lore friendly" once in a while. One of the best TV adaptations for me has to be "Reacher". Just the pure presence and wit of the main character with good acting from all members was a delight to see.
Reacher is an amazing show. I hope we get more of it based on the other books in the series.
Too bad they turned his trusted follower into a snarky black female who is better than him at everything he does, and then jammed her into a story in which she never appears just to show him up constantly. I loved the show but can't stand any scene in which she appears.

Thanks for everything, Drinker. Happy New Year and many happy returns of the day.
Thank you Drinker. Found your channel early in 2022 and I’m glad I did. Great perspective and content.
Unfortunately Hollywood still has no clue what it’s product is intended to do for fans. We want to watch entertaining stories that allow us to forget the negative crap we all deal with, hear and see everyday. If they ever figure this out we’ll all be the better for it. But I’m not holding my breath for Hollywood if they keep producing the unskilled, uninteresting and unabashed narrative-based crap they have been producing for the last few years.
Create Hollywood. Actually create decent content that has logic, is well written and is acted to perfection with a human message not a political message. If you can’t we’ll continue to support the few instances where this was done or look for entertainment elsewhere
Unless those holding the purse strings actually wake up, I don't see a significant change to normality occurring anytime soon. Many of the new generation of creative idiots employed to write/act this shyte, are completely on-board with the Message, because of their schooling and University. The next generation of 'talent' is likely to be even worse. Possibly grim times ahead. Thanks goodness then for the huge back catalogue of quality content already existing out there 😆😆
My favourite part of The Rings of Power was when Galadriel yelled 'This is Sparta!!!' before running off the landing craft onto Omaha Beach, and slaying zombies by the hundreds with her lightsaber.
😂😂
The scene ends with Guyladriel and Gayrond initiating a break dancing montage with the cast as the credits roll, with orcs wearing gansta jewellery, cuz representation or something
This actually sounds interesting.

Top gun was hands down my film of the year, it's been so long since we've gotten a sequel that is faithful to the original and didn't try and tear down previous characters just to build up a new diverse cast of characters. Not to mention cinematography wise it is one of the best looking films I've ever watched
🎁🎁👆👆👆..
Thanks Drinker for all the funny, interesting, informative videos and live streams this year. All the best 😎.
Happy New Year, Will. Looking forward to following your show in 2023. Cheers!
Happy new year drinker, Thank you for all the fantastic analysis.
I would have loved a shout-out to Andor for being another show this year that had no right being as good as it was. On the flip side, it's nice to see that we've already forgotten the new Avatar movie exists since it wasn't mentioned once.
Yeah was kinda weird Andor wasn't mentioned. Definitely one of my top shows this year along with HotD.
That show was murdered and buried under the radar by Obi Wan and TBOBF
I'm surprised he didn't mention Strangers Thing's return to form with Season 4 and Andor being an actual good piece of Star Wars media.
Andor was definitely the best Star Wars this year, however, the title of best show, in my opinion, was The Peripheral
He showed a clip or two of it, and he's already done a full review very recently (I think), so he probably didn't feel the need to rehash it again. Idk.
The LoR fandom has been around for long time. Our Great grandparents were probably apart of what they would have called a fandom. That kind of tradition of excellence will breed stalwart defenders of the IP.
"I was there... 3000 years ago"
No one is ever going to make a successful lotr adaption. Ever. They just aren’t. Lotr os simply the greatest story ever written down.. Peter Jackson made a pretty good film adaption of it. That’s it.. done.
I mean Rings of Power could have been a success.
IF they made it clear that they would write a less mythical version of the Second Age and change characters. (They said one thing in some interviews or even sentences and the opposite in others.)
IF they could write relatable characters with decent dialogues.
IF they could create a sense of time and scale that made even the smallest lick of sense.
IF their Elves didn't look like old and tired humans most of the time.
IF there weren't any hobbits... sorry, harfoots or wizards. Or Nazgul ghost thingies?
Let's just face it they were 20.000 miles over their heads.
@@kaltaron1284 They released a Behind the Scenes and apparently everything went down because feminists like Jennifer Salke took over (and self inserted herself with Guy-ladriel)

Top Gun Maverick being among the best movies of the year truly speaks volumes about the state of present cinema. Here’s hoping it only gets better from now on.
I mean it was good, really good. But I think a big reason everyone likes it so much is because there's a massive sense of collective relief that it didnt suck.
@@GayFrogsTho people praised it because it's what they want, but for me it just good PG-13 movie. it's not about enemy, it's about maverick and his relationship. still annoyed plot armour of this movie.
Superb review and analysis as always Drinker! Here’s to 2023, cheers! 🍻
TGM was a great movie. While it was a bit of a soft remake, it was done brilliantly. Great acting and really great special effects/practical effects were a blast in the IMAX theater.
It’s the first movie I’ve been to in a loooong time where people stood up and cheered at the end of it.
"The mythical modern audience that doesn't exist."
Now that's the most accurate description I've heard all year.
Hollywoods crap isn't what modern audiences are asking for. It's what audiences are being told it's what they want.
I like to tell myself that, in times when our loyalty was tested, the LotR-Fanbase stood its ground and did not bow before the sweet whispers of Amazon, which promised to show us Middle-earth on film once again. That ain't Middle-earth. And all those other Franchises, polluted by people unfamiliar with the Storys they are telling joined the call. That ain't it. But honestly .... as The Drinker said, it was bound to happen :) Happy New Year!
I agree with the sentiment I've read in some other comments: Had the show been good it would have been accepted as a different telling of the events of the Second Age by the general public and purists would have argued over all the details that are wrong. Kinda like the LOTR trilogy.
But the show was shit, so everyone shitted on it. OK, not everyone, I've seen a few comments here and there of people who liked it and hey, they are free to do that.
January 2, 2023 - Happy New Year Drinker!!! I look forward to you sharing your thoughts and giving us some good laughs along the way. Stay well Sir!
The fact that you didn’t even bring up Kenobi or Andor illuminates just how dead the SW brand is.
Like he said in his review of Andor it was a good show that came out at a bad time. If it had come out before mando or after? That would have been the shot in the arm for SW and a palate cleanser for the fanfic trilogy.
But nope. The house of mouse and the lucasfilm wine mom decided to put ***THE MESSAGE*** in SW because she was butthurt that she couldn't make something that good on her best day.
Mando S3 is gonna be interesting.
Top Gun Maverick and The Northman for me this year. Big thanks to The Drinker for all the vids this year. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that The Drinkers vids and Open Bar sessions have extended some much welcomed sanity in the year that gave us She-Hulk and other such garbage. Happy New Year!
I didn't even watch those. I stopped watching movies. It saves time
@@joriankell1983 No one asked.
Elvis was pretty great also
@@thecensoredmuscle563 Yes the first half was way to rushed and the editing and use of modern remixes of songs yanked me out of the movie, but the second half really slowed things down and took its time. And Austin Butlers portrayal? Best ever. Blew every other bio-pic actor out of the water in my opinion. That was the most believable performance I've seen from a film in years. Baz is a little too extravagant but the film was definitely a favorite for me.

Thanks for all the pleasure you've given me, Drinker! Far more than the sh!t most films have become. Happy New Year to you & yours, and thanks also for the uplifting close! (Things have got to get better sometime, don't they?)
Hope springs eternal, but holy sh!t it's hard to remain optimist in the face of the wholesale destruction, propaganda and pablum -- notable exceptions aside -- being churned out as "entertainment" (to say nothing about other, far more important, aspects of our lives), a veritable and predictable assembly line of suck, over the last 3/4 of a decade, at least. That being said, here's to a better tomorrow... Happy New Year everyone!
Ah..you gotta pay the guy for him to acknowledge you..but I'm sure you touched his soul 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah man Drinker really changed the face of criticism this year, critiquing TV shows & films has seriously honestly died these past couple decades entirely in the name of capitalism & profits, f'ing over fandoms & all the people who want to consume great media or stories for profits, the news media became owned by the corporations & all the sites like Rotten Tomatoes always just had critics giving everything high ratings & reviews.
Of course the Drinker has been up with this the previous several years but he really grew in popularity & finally got the internet to critically think about & listen to what he was saying instead of just hearing it.
Simp lol
Top Gun Maverick was the only movie I paid to see this year (not counting streaming subscriptions). That is crazy to think about.
Caught Top Gun Maverick on PPV. With our subscription, PPV gives a 72-hour window to see the show. I saw the movie three times in that window.
The bond between Maverick and Ice and the way Ice's story played out had me in tears. Reading the real life backstory to Kilmer's appearance and performance choked me up, too. My compliments to Tom Cruise.
Avatar 2 for me. Fun blockbuster with great visuals.
I paid to see that and RRR. I'm so glad I did.
I hope RRR brings tons of South Indian movies here.

New year without a hangover is like a wedding without a cake. Blasphemy! Bless, keep safe.
Tom Cruise jumped out of a helicopter to thank the fans.
That meant a lot to some of us...
Top Gun Maverick may be the most important film of this decade. Not only is a great and fun movie, but it sent a strong message to the industry that Woke doesn’t sell anymore and a stronger message to audiences that it’s ok to like traditional movies that try to entertain without a message drunkenly stapled to its side.
Woke never sold. For a while we just ignored it until they made it so bad that it became "the message"
God bless you drinker, you’re spot on brother 👍
Man... I've listened to a few of your videos... And I could bild a church in your name! Couldn't agree more! Keep on preaching!😆
Why did that hug between maverick and iceman hit me so hard in the feels?
Because Tom Cruise is a superb actor, and Val Kilmer--at the time damn near dead from cancer and unable to talk--can still outact the entire cast of Rings of Power in one scene.
Because it felt genuine and sincere.
"Nostalgia!"
Coz of the gay implications?
Because Tom is an absolute Class Act honoring Val in his career launching sequel.
I was expecting Andor to be mentioned by Drinker.
I'm actually a little surprised that he didn't acknowledge Andor at all. The one glimmer of hope for Star Wars and arguably one of the best TV shows this year.
Happy New Years Drinker!
Disney dangled the carrot of star wars once too often before our faces. With Mandalorien we thought now they got it they finally turn around but then they f-ed up Bobs Fett. Now they try again with Andor and I have to wonder wich one will they nuke next.

The fact that Sonic Prime, a 3D animation series featuring a super fast anthropomorphic blue hedgehog, had more heart and soul put into its development and story than the likes of Rings of Power, She-Hulk and The Witcher says much about the state of modern entertainment.
And coming from someone who watched the show, even though there were some errors and nitpicks, (most notably some amateurish sprite-work and some awkward pacing issues) I loved the show and I hope Wildbrain could find more ways to expand upon it next season.
