  • Welcome to The Whiskey Shed, In this episode I review a blended whiskey from Bushmills, Black Bush. Its 80% single malt, 20% grain and aged in oloroso cherry casks.
On the Nose : Typical sweetness I get form Bushmills with a dominant nutty aroma and a hint of toffee, vanilla and dried fruits.
On the Palate: Up front a hit of honey like sweetness followed again by that nutty flavor. finishing with some spice and a touch of peppery heat.

Irish Whiskey > Scotch. Big facts and I commend you for saying it on video!

Great video and thanks for the history. My whiskey journey started 3 years ago and I’ve always got black bush on my shelf. I love that bushmills sweetness. Whenever my beautiful wife pours me a surprise dram of black bush, I can always guess it because of its unmistakable character. Thanks buddy and greetings from the US.

Great review John. I'm a real fan of Bushmills and your review described Black Bush perfectly.

Happy St Patrick's Day! Today I'm trying it for the first time and it's a really nice whiskey for the price. $30ish here in Texas. I get ripe apples and pears all day with the lovely nutty character you get from sherry cask whiskeys. I'm definitely going to add this in my rotation as a daily drinker.

Great review, my favourite whiskey in its price range by far, when I went in the bushmills distillery tour they said its aged for a minimum of 8 years, love the sherry finish gives it a depth you do t get from just bourbon finish

We did the tour at Bushmills in 2009 and swallowed the whole 1608 story! Must admit it’s a lovely drink though we are enjoying exploring lots of other Irish whiskeys, like the Slane and Sexton.
Saw the American review and have to say when you venture overseas you *really* need to look at the Japanese ones. They’re phenomenal. Love the Nikka from the barrel... 😉

Nice review John. My oldest friend (of over 40 yrs) comes from Holywood, County Down and always swore by the Black Bush. Well, a year into retirement on a malt journey of my own sampling the best of Scotland, Ireland and America, I have just bought the BB. It was on offer at a great price for a litre bottle and so far has not disappointed. I personally like a bit more body and integrity strength to my whisky but I'm no whisky snob and I'm very happy to entertain a dram or several of blended malts. Slainte mhath 😉.

Would love to see your thoughts on some of the wine finished Irish whiskeys, I am a huge fan of the Green Spot Leoville Barton and Redbreast Lustau. Also my favorite Irish whiskey right now is Knappogue Castle 14.

  • @GaryGlass-DriftwoodTurner

Hi John, stumbled upon this while subscribing to your Man in a Shed channel, As a Scotsman now living in Antrim in the North I do love a wee dram. Have you tried Red Bush from the Bushmills distillery yet? Aged in a bourbon barrel and nice and smooth, and of course to promote the Scottish whiskey Ive recently discovered Monkey Shoulder a nice blended malt from William Grant. Both are very well priced and worth a try,

I might be wrong but I think they kept distilling at old Bushmills when they sold to Irish distillers. I'm around 75 per cent sure.

Love the black bush. The ten year is a bit wiry when first opened. I find it nicer after 3 months. The older bottles get real good though.

Sorry to bother you mate, but I think this whiskey tastes like scotch whiskey which I don't like. Irish whiskey is usually my favourite because it is so clean and doesn't have the scotch after taste. Could you possibly tell me what it is about this whiskey, that makes me taste scotch?

Does anyone know whether this one is the same like the old „1608“. I loved that one and the 20% grain would fit. Yet, they don’t make it anymore.

Cheers from the Philippines, John! Bushmills Black Bush is my go-to Irish Whiskey. Awesome stuff, and it outclasses Jameson and Tullamore DEW (which are similarly priced in my country).
