Have you considered mounting the RF receiver on a drone, and slowly sweep 360 degree from some height? With yagi antenna, you should get long distance and directional signal, allowing some triangulation.

I'm pleased to hear that the police were actually able to find one by investigating the situation. Need lots more of that. Plus maybe a bit more personal security on behalf of the victims, but at least its coming home. I think of all the stolen cars and machines that are never recovered and the victim will get a depreciatted compensation from the insurance and its just a lose lose situation except for the criminal. I know why I enjoy these. It is because of a special deep loathing for thieves. Most stolen goods are not recovered but if an arrest is made and goes to court I have never seen a thief excuse themselves to the victims or show remorse for their crime. Murderers have been known from time to time to realize the horror they have commited and sincerely feel sorrow for having done it and accept their fates but thieves just don't seem to understand what hurt their crimes can do. And maybe my opinion is BS, but it comes from a lifetime of observation and not just brain storming some novel like Philip Dick on LSD.

The man in the pub would have to rescind what he said to the copper and come out and say he did not know it was stolen only that it had its id plate ripped out and he found it or something. The guy had 76 previous convictions for thefts, burglaries, driving with no insurance, drunk driving, you name it.. and they still let him go. If he was a foreigner would be on top of every newspaper, but coz he is british, they let him go.

The biggest machine that was stolen other here was 10 years ago, a Caterpillar 627B Twin Engine Motor Scraper, a low Loader pulled up to transport it, none of us thought anything out of the ordinary, never seen it since, 35 tonne machine gone

One person cutting off another's hand in England or Wales is assault (unless it's a medical procedure), and comes with a prison sentence, no religious excuse. That can not change.
The law does not punish these thieves enough. We need the courts to start hammering them - big 10 year sentences for theft. That will soon make them think about whether it's worth it.
