Tenshin got screwed in the Mayweather bout when Mayweather held the event hostage until the Japanese promoters took out all Kickboxing rules and made it a pure boxing fight. Tenshin never stood a chance but given how much younger he was and how weird the event actually was

I think the big difference between stomping on someone’s knee and a submission that may injure someone is that they have the option to tap before the submission does any real damage.

Good points on both counts, though you should always give someone a chance to tap, that's not always how it works and some people aren't smart enough to tap when they've been caught.
They also have the option to not get stomped on the knee. If Bukauskas doesn't step so heavy on his front foot while throwing his jab and lead hook, then he doesn't get his knee destroyed. He did not protect himself.
I liken it to Andrade slamming Rose. Rose got slammed on the neck because she refused to release her submission hold. It is legal for Andrade to defend herself from a kimura and it is Rose's responsibility to get slammed on her butt instead of her neck.
We probably shouldn't throw strikes to the head either because they dont give the opponent a chance to tap before they get irreversible brain damage..
DJ only has a single loss outside the UFC which came from a technique that was banned inside the UFC. He also just beat a legendary Thai boxer Rodtang in a mixed rules fight, so to say he's been struggling is inaccurate.
Have you watched his fights in One? Yes, he's only lost once, but even when he wins his fights are more competitive than what we saw during his title run in the UFC. DJ is in his mid 30's with a ton of milage on him, it's not an exaggeration to say he's not looking as good even when he wins.

Yes if it was a pure mma match rodtang wouldn't stand a chance. but it was a round of MUAY THAI followed by only a 3min mma round.

@@richardcheese4680 Trevor Wittman has a good patent, but UFC wants the whole thing for themselves. Pride and Bellator gloves also work well but UFC doesn't care.
Controversial solution: Ditch the gloves. They're an artifact of boxing and they encourage you to use your hands weird.
The exact style of glove is approved by the fight committees. To change would be a nightmare, getting every state to sign off in it.

Listen to Jim Cornette, popular pro-wrestling manager and pundit. UFC has ALWAYS been about the controversy, "heels" versus "faces." Getting asses into seats. I watched UFC 1 LIVE. I didn't have cable, so I had to go to a friend's house. Why? Because I study martial arts, and wanted to see all the different styles go against each other. I had/have a TECHNICAL reason to watch. I look for those little grabs and throws when someone is off balance, the subtle things. I really don't care who wins. As UFC adds more rules, and outlaws more strikes, the fighting just gets sloppier. No elbows to the back of the head? Hey, look, another wrestler takes someone down. No strikes to the groin? Oh look, Silva's kicks are unstoppable from his "here's my groin if you want it" stance. No small joint manipulation? I guess there's no way to break that BJJ hold. MMA is what it is. It's a spectacle, and it's make BILLIONS of dollars by bringing in the casual fan. If you want anything to change, that has to happen OUTSIDE of the UFC near-monopoly.

To me the “money era” argument wasn’t about the matchmaking, it was about the conduct of the fighters themselves.
My controversial opinion: Judges fight in an elimination tournament and only the final brackets keep their jobs.

I really like hearing Journos asking those sorts of questions in the pressers. I get why people don't though. I mean when has anyone ever asked GSP some weird uncomfortable shit. Controversial opinion that isn't controversial: Unified Rules. We need em.
I cycled steroids for 15yrs and the biggest misconception that people have regarding peds is that strength gain is it’s main and only purpose (and that it affects your balls- and since I have 4 kids I’ll say that’s not accurate so long as you have a recovery phase). Steroids can do many different things, from weight loss, fast twitch muscle increase, bulk muscle increase, strength gain, increased energy levels, etc…. But the most impactful benefit (that everyone forgets) is that they make you feel like a god. Every part of you feels great and most importantly, your down time is greatly reduced. And it’s this benefit that helped Jones the most. Because of the steroids Jones would have been able to train much harder, much longer, and more often. Imagine you have two fighters preparing for a fight but one fighter can train at close to 100% intensity (compared to the other’s 80%), can train for 1.5x longer, and needs half the rest/recovery time of his opponent. Not only would the steroid fuelled fighter be able to learn more techniques, they would be able to become proficient in those techniques at a much faster rate. Because of testing, most fighters will be cycled off their cocktail before the fight and will not feel the full strength and speed benefits compared to in the middle of their cycle… but they will still maintain around 60% of their gains (at least that’s how much I always kept, and I was just a guy who did my own research and muddled through the process… I imagine someone like Jones would have much more knowledgeable people helping him maintain so he likely kept more gains than myself). Most importantly, the techniques and skills Jones learned from being able to train harder, longer, and more often were gains he never lost… and it’s this huge benefit which gave him an insane advantage over his opponents. If you factor everything in he basically had almost twice the training camps as any person he fought. And he can tell Rogan all he wants that the weekend before a fight he would go get drunk and coked out of his mind, but the gains he received were already baked in, and the recovery cycle he would have been on at that time would mitigate any crap he put in his body. If all this doesn’t convince you that Jones shouldn’t be eligible to be the goat, then you’re just a fanboy that would forgive him for anything. Good luck out there

There definitely needs to be rounds. Maybe make every fight a 25 minute fight? I'm not sure. I've seen more boring fights being saved by rounds than I have exciting fights being stopped.

@@Colemanbearpig It's all about insinuation. Saying that KOs straight up mean permanent injury/careers ending isn't the case. As an extreme, it'd be like saying "Crossing the road means being hit by traffic." There's obviously a chance you could be hit crossing the road but also a chance you won't. As I say, it's an extreme analogy and no doubt there's obviously more of a chance of being severely impacted by a KO but it's false to state that a KO results in 100% permanent injuries.
People who think smaller weight classes aren't entertaining don't know a thing about mma. Heavyweight is by far the most boring class and I don't see that changing until the pay does

The thing with Jones that I think gets overlooked when discussing his doping and GOAT status is that after he popped for steroids twice and came back he was noticeably less capable in the cage, I think this is the strongest evidence that he would have been doping a long time and that it did legitimately give him an advantage. I also feel like when you've got guys like GSP lined up as other potential GOATS it just makes sense the ignore jones in the discussion due to getting caught cheating and just generally being bad for the sport because GSP was arguably just as good if not better anyway
Its safe to say most fighters particularly the top ones are doping but have found loopholes, ways around the testing system and are taking full advantage of it to get that advantage while USADA is twiddling thumbs. I'm also of the opinion that the many legends of the sport pre-USADA whose careers are over but never popped is because they ultimately got away with it. For Jones to pop that much says to me he's either not very smart in how he's taken PEDs or doesn't know how to get past modern USADA drug testing like the other athletes, and was effectively forced off using them to avoid getting busted which has led to lackluster performances in his most recent fights.

The problem with USADA is that its objective of "making the sport cleaner" is hampered by the fact that if they affect what the UFC would consider desirable matchmaking, they can just get dropped. Basically, its a system where they can either get paid to test fighters and ignore when Dana's darlings pop, or they can do the right thing and lose their cash cow.

What something is advertised as does not necessarily mean it is actually and genuinely the case.
People need to realise that in Brazil mixed-style fighting had been occuring for decades. Therefore there were no mysteries about what would happen.
Even more so in a new setting ie the USA where submission grappling was nigh on unknown and people thought striking was the be all and end all.
Today nobody really believes that the boxing heavyweight champion of the world is the 'baddest man on the planet'.
People bringing up knockouts in regards to oblique kicks need to understand that making blows to the head illegal would literally ruin the entirety of the UFC instantaneously. Brain damage is an inevitably in this sport. Oblique kicks however, could be banned at the snap of a finger and it would cause basically no aftershocks.
If fighters are gonna get their heads banged up then at least give them a fighting chance to keep their knees.

WTF . When i use the argument that "doping makes the sport less safe"i don't mean people get so much better and stronger that now the can break the opponent's bones more easy. i mean that people that want to compete at high level will NEED to take drugs and will experiment with new and riskier's one and this will make then suffer at the long run, since doping have a lot of side effects. To stick with the cigarette analogy that was made, his argument is like saying “look cigarettes place you at significant risk anyway, so why make them get approved by the FDA?” Umm because a behavior being inherently dangerous doesn’t mean that it’s pointless to try and mitigate that danger?? I think having the fight divided over rounds is the fairer option. If you can get a mount in 1/10 attempts and that happens to be the first attempt, the whole fight might go your way even if youre not the better fighter. Different rounds makes it so that the better fighter who wins more number of times than the other would actually win. Even then, a knockout and submission can turn the fight against the ‘better’ fighter. So yeah, rounds are definitely more practical and logical

Gracie vs Saku still had rounds, unlimited 15 minute rounds. 6 rounds and Gracie quit on his stool due to injury.
Ngl, I found that fight largely boring to watch and I usually have a high tolerance for clinch fighting and grappling matches. I get it that the fight was highly significant for MMA given the ruleset and the fact that Royce Gracie lost for the first time in his career, but looking back on it now when there have been so many more exciting classics to watch over the years Sakuraba vs Gracie was very much a product of its time. Much of that fight was basically the two men clinched up against the ropes doing very little for minutes on end with only brief flashes of action. The flashes of actions however, are memorable at least.

The pressers the ufc run are to promote the fights, so fight relevant questions should be asked. People are already reporting on the legal issues various fighters have, the issue isn't MMA fans versus journalists, it's MMA fans vs journalists repeating the same questions that have already been answered multiple times. To be clear though, questions about PED's are fully relevant to the fight, especially when a fighter has a history of popping and showing zero remorse or even belief that they have done wrong like Jones.
Reporters have the right to ask. Fighters have the right to decline. There is no issue to argue about.
If you're a journalist you're literally allowed to ask what you want. It's part of the job. If that upsets people then..... I dunno, suffer I guess.
The journalists absolutely should call the UFC out on promoting people like that and pretending like it never happened or that it's not big of a deal. They need to do it way more than is currently happening, cause the UFC not only lets their fighters get away with ever more sh*t, they even incentivize it by using it for fight promotion
@@markb35 Except journalists can't help but tow the line because the UFC can simply ban journalists they don't like and keep them out of press conferences, which would effectively end their MMA journalism career. Just look at Helwani's case. This was something I learning from watching one of the videos on this very channel.
The oblique kicks works , but it's a shitty thing to do to your training partners. I've refused to spar guys that used it too aggressively.

Oblique kicks can just happen in a moment.

The reason why JBJ is not going to ever be the goat, is best said by Benavidez. As an athelete you are gifted a very special position that not many people have, you represent the community, the gym and the sport that you are in, and only if you hold yourself up to that standard that people can look up to as a person before an athelete, then you have a chance to be the GOAT.

Unpopular opinion, Rogan needs to go ASAP. His style of commentating is setting the sport back. He just runs with false narratives like someone getting tired or he might have an injury when they clearly don't. Also he over exaggerates his reactions for the camera.
The sport has evolved a lot and I feel like Joe is 15 years behind.
The problem is that everyone is trying to copy his style of screaming and yelling "oh" after every jab instead of giving good technical analysis
+ he's always riding on the same talking points over and over again.
i love JRE, but i enjoy his commentary less and less over the years. bisping and anik are my faves right now. big john is also doing a splendid job in bellator.

I'll start with I love Justin Gaethje, that dude is an amazing fighter and human being. But to use him as an example of other promotions having top talent is a bit disingenuous. Yes he won a title there, but his style has since radically shifted because he decided he wanted to be a real contender. That growth was only made possible because of competing in the UFC. And it's like that for a lot of the fighters you listed. They wear elite, but needed growth to becomes champs.
You can grow outside of the ufc, unless you think Dana has some secret ingredient.

I've just been watching UFC 155 and two things come to mind. 1 - Goldberg was good for the time when people learning MMA and he had Joe to keep him straight and 2 any talk about Featherweight GOATS being either Volkanovski or Max needs to be verified by re-watching peak Aldo. That man was insane and gets a bad rep since his McGregor fight.
How different of a career Aldo could've had if he'd always competed at bantamweight where he always belonged. Maybe prime Cruz or TJ or DJ beat him, but maybe not. Regardless he sure wouldn't have been weight bullied by Conor.

The issues of rounds and BJJ are two sides of the same coin. Yes, everyone adding some form of submission grappling to whatever else they were already doing was huge, but the biggest thing that lessened BJJ's dominance were the rule changes that very specifically took away from jiu-jitsu's perceived "unfair" advantage. Rounds, time limits, referee standups, no grabbing the other guys clothes, no gi allowed, etc were all brought in to level the playing field.

i regally don’t get not liking smaller weight classes. they guys get faster, more technical, and better in almost every skill outside of sheer strength and power the lower you go. if you call yourself a fight can how is that off putting to you?
The chance of a KO is a big part of the excitement of a fight and those chances go up with weight classes.
I am not saying I don't like smaller weight classes, I am one of those who watch for the sport and techniques, but I can also understand why a lot of fans are just in for the excitement.
Watching the small guys fight is like watching a welterweight fight on fast forward with none of the excitement or damage
Hot take: Jon Jones wasn’t that great. All those former champions he beat, on paper, were great wins. But all of them were heading out the door, at the tail end of their careers. He damn near lost to gustaffson, edged out a decision against a one legged Thiago santos, beat dc w steroids, and pretty much lost to Reyes but was given the dub anyway. Jones’ best wins imo were Gus and DC. But again, he cheated against dc, and you can argue that he lost to gus. And the second time he fought Gus he popped again. Glover was a good win, I’ll give him that, but all of his other wins were tainted in some way, shape, or form. So yea, Jon is good, but definitely not on my goat list.

Regarding the issue around journalism, I believe an undue amount of criticism is being placed on the fans when most of it should be laid at the feet of the UFC as they have barred a variety of journalist from press conferences.
Edit: Also there are valid arguments as to why Jon Jones isn't the G.O.A.T. that have nothing to do with his controversies, namely:
- Light Heavyweight is and generally has been a low-ranking division skill-wise
- A lot of the names on Jones' resume, while not completely over the hill, were exiting their prime
- He over relies on his size advantage; with most of his opponents being proportionately Middleweights and his toughest fights being when the size discrepancy was not as significant
My reason for keeping rounds is cos fighters will start dieing in the ring/octagon or back stage after the fight

The issue with journalists is that they always ask the same questions. What preparation did you do for this fight? how are you going to win? do you think you’re the best? your opponent is good at XYZ, how will you get past that? And when they ask controversial questions save it for the one on one interviews, no body wants to hear that at the press conference which just helps their opponent to sit back and play mind games with that question.
