The NYC Convenience Store With A Secret Restaurant | Word of Mouth

- Indo Java, an Indonesian market in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens, seems like an unassuming shop to passersby. But the smells coming from the tiny makeshift kitchen lure people inside to taste the flavors of Indonesian cuisine. Elvi and Viviane, both immigrants from Indonesia, run the convenience store-turned-restaurant. Elvi manages the market and Viviane does the cooking for Warung Kamis, a pop up at Indo Java that happens every Thursday. Their tiny storefront becomes a community hangout because of Viviane's cooking, like her beef curry, stir-fried squid, sauteed chayote, and fragrant anchovy rice. Viviane often uses imported Indonesian ingredients from the shop for her cooking. Indo Java has become a destination for other Indonesian immigrants and any food lover in NYC to gather, feast, and feel like home.

I've wondered for years why Indonesian food doesn't have a higher profile in the USA. It's so tasty!
There are hardly any Indonesians in the US.
krnpowr is this something you know for a fact or whaaaa
@@baffinjigger6223 Yeah, I've lived in the US for 4 decades now. Never met an Indonesian other then the international students in college and the ones at Chicago's only Indonesian restaurant. Like I said, hardly any Indonesians in the US. Don't know why because there are so many Filipinos.
Wow thank you 😊
@@krnpowr I don't think so. Although I'll have to say that there are less Indonesian in the US than Vietnamese, Filipino, or even Thai.

I like my kuali mie too
@m nope.. im indonesian and ive never heard that, at all.
@m jangan pake kayaknya. pake data valid. tak cuma indomie, you makan snack, minuman, bahkan cuma mineral water, apapun kalo kelebihan juga bisa kena penyakit, bukan cuma cancer. you makan jerohan atau nasi padang tiap hari bisa mati karene jantung atau komplikasi. makan yang wajar.
@m ya itu, you said about a rumour. yang gak jelas.menurut rumour karena mie kena kanker. brati mie bisa sebabkan kanker. you cant just blame indomie for causing cancer. bahkan satai pun yang semua natural bisa sebebkan kanker. penyebab kanker sangat banyak,macam2. semua tergantung orangnya, lifestyle, etc. kalo kebanyuakan walaupun cuma air putih bisa meninggal. itu valid. cari aja di google.
Immigrants are truly the backbone of our country. It drives me nuts when people decide to shun, vilify and even altogether stop immigration to the states. As someone who started over in another country after leaving the states, most people don’t appreciate the hard work involved in picking up and starting completely over with very little and working hard just to survive. I am very happy to see them do so well and I hope someday they’ll be able to maybe expand a bit to have a little restaurant with maybe five tables and twice per week lol! Well done ladies 👍🏻
Well said
The US is built off immigration. It’s what makes America great. Not some stupid wall.
I believe is immigrant are made up by majority of poor eastern or balkan european rather than African and Asian and also Latino it would be different perception by the US citizens
Everyone is immigrant in America except the natives ofcourse. The diversity of culture of America is what makes it great, but racists bastards are destroying it.

I'm Filipino but I grew up in Malaysia. My mom had many Indonesian friends so we grew up feasting on delectable Indonesian cuisine. My mom treasures recipes given to her by her Indonesian friends. To this day, I crave these cuisines. Indonesian, Malaysian and Filipino food have similarities because we all come from one race, the Malayo-Polynesian. Can't wait to travel again and go back to Indonesia. Indonesians are so friendly. I go there, and they tell me, we Indonesians and Filipinos are brothers and sisters. I feel the genuine love.
I'm from Malaysia and my mom is Filipino (I'm Filipino mix Indian) and I love how similar Indonesian, Malaysian & Filipino food taste like! I grew up eating all three of them and love them all!

Glad to hear that immigrant communities band together in Malaysia. Very heartwarming.

She loves very spicy Singapore Malay, Indian and Chinese foods in Singapore. She will buy the very spicy curry flavoured Maggie instant noodles !!!🤣🤣🤣
She said Filipino dishes aren't spicy at all (I've only cooked chicken adabo once).

This place is legit. I miss sitting in the tiny table during Covid times. But they have tons of prepared meals you can grab from the fridge and eat it at home. I’ve done it a few times myself! Somehow end up leaving with a ton of their desserts and snacks as well 😅

@@monicapetitebonita218 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The "dirt" the west takes for granted like sweat and humidity for example, I think, seasons the food on a slowly-but-surely basis. Sometimes you can taste the environment of the food and that taste is usually very contrary to the sense of "hygiene"
It’s true lol my favorite Thai restaurant is this lil kitchen hidden at the back of this “lowkey” dirty Vietnamese grocery store lol the food is incredible and the flavors are better than anywhere else but it’s very low profile and not many people know about its location.

I may be subjective (cos im indonesian) but been living overseas for years, still doesnt understand why Indo food is not nearly as popular as other asians food ( love love THAI food, which is almost at every city in the world). I low key blame Indo government for not promoting our food enough.
Mgkin karena indo yg tinggal diluar sedikit, jadi ya gk bnyak yg tahu juga
Besides promotion, theres not much of indo community as well in other countries, not many immigrant from indo, so the demand is low, a lot of foreigner scared to try something new when it comes to food unless people talk about it, not to mention they barely know about indonesia.
This is exactly what I think, when I was in US it was so easy to find thai food and I also like to eat at vietnam restaurants. At DC I tried find Indonesia restaurant but didn't find any so I ate at myanmar restaurant. So sad
I think the reason why because the indonesian migrants in US and UK is considered "earn well" or rich they mostly are professional worker that's what make they don't feel the need to open for restaurant or anything because from my observation those Thai people who owned thai restaurant or vietnamenese overseas were really start they live there from the strached so to survive they opening family restaurant

35th street in Manhattan between 8th and 9th ave, in a service entrance there's a Spanish restaurant. No advertisement, the only way you know its there is from the lines outside. That's where you get great food, word of mouth, hole in the wall.
ikr. It's like you're more likely to find good food at cheap places than expensive places.
@@Brian-jv8iy I meant more something like 60% of cheap places are good while 25% of expensive places are good. Yes, excluding fast food.
Fingering Things ✔️ I still remember more than 40 years ago, my family would go from across the Bay to a Chinese grocery in Chinatown San Francisco for its inexpensive Cantonese noodle soup, instead of “established” restaurants there. Today, the best Indian wrap sandwiches in LA are found at a gas station in WLA - however, they are not exactly cheap, but the fillings are so well-done that they rival fancy Indian restaurants in the U.S..
