Hamare NFR ke metre gauge railway ke officials bade strict the. Bhale metre gauge trains itni khaas na ho, lekin passengers ko koi dikkat na ho iska poora khayal rakhte the. Agar koi bina ticket wala ya general ticket wala sleeper ya AC coach mein dikh jata, to TTE sahab straight away use agle station par utaar dete.
Maine 2014 tak chalne wale is section par yeh sab to kabhi nahi dekh tha.
MG hi kya, sabse busy BG routes par bhi yeh sab nahi hota tha.......

This is an excellent topic! Foreigner here giving her two cents on this topic. I have traveled on Indian trains many times. As a tourist, I can afford a better train class, that's a reality. In 2019 I traveled from Agra to Varanasi on a sleeper train and the experience was really, really bad. I will say this with respect to the dignity of people in India: there is a general lack of hygiene that has nothing to do with how slow or fast or modern is a train. People are not capable of using a washroom in a civilized manner! I truly don't understand why people throw their garbage on the streets. Why people damage a toilet throwing all sorts of garbage! I had to literally stand in the washroom, doing a split to use the toilet!!! It was filthy to a level of almost vomiting. The problem is that people in India are not willing to change the way they used to do things in the past but expect to have a better life. The main problem is in their minds. It feels as if people don't care about basic hygiene and social manners.

Sad reality is that most of the ticket-less passengers aren't the ones who can't afford, but they simply don't want to spend even if they can afford the tickets. They know that TTEs and the Railway police won't do anything. Very often you have to fight for your reserved berth with these without ticket people and they even act like goons and hijack the seat.

One mega point is about 64% of railways revenue is spent on salaries, pensions and more on other perks. Which is insane for a PSU with staff to user ratio is very high. I knew a 80yr old dadima collecting around 40k in railway pension of her late husband who passed in mid nineties. This problem is there with many gov departments. This limits on how much money can be spent on actual infra. Also bureaucracy is insane with British mindset and many levels especially lower levels. NRMU has opposition to all major changes that can let rail earn more but jeopardize their jobs or even stop recruiting in future. Veg-automatic ticket gates, guard less trains etc etc. The rot is internal and external
If you ever want to see NMRUs mindset, just go to any rail office and see the kind of pics they have on their calenders.

They don't even spare AC compartments Now. Whenever I go to Delhi from Kolkata I face this situation. I also saw people entering reserved compartments in WB. But there is a fundamental Difference between WB and Bihar. In WB they know that whatever they are doing is wrong. But in Bihar they think that it's there Birth right to occupy reserved seats. According to them just because I reserved a seat it doesn't mean I have any right on that seat.
I stopped going to sleeper few years ago. Now I only travel in AC. Price is high for me but it was worth it as it kept Biharis away.
But my believe was shattered during the Chat Puja. These so called "maajbur maajdur" people fully occupied the AC compartments and locked it from inside. I couldn't come home even after having train ticket.

The biggest jumla is certain "Desh ka Garib jaayega kaha.." but let me tell you about a particular incident. One of my friends boarded an express train from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction. He was inside a general coach and the train was scheduled to reach the destination (station closest to our university) the next day at around 11:30 am. We were there to meet with him at the station. He is from a pretty stable, rather rich background. He has a Kawasaki ZX-10R, uses a MacBook Pro and has an iPhone Pro series handset. When we asked him why he was travelling in such an uncomfortable and crowded coach when the very same train had AC 1st, 2 and 3 tier coaches, he said that he didn't spend any money on the ticket and got mixed with the crowd in order to evade the Ticket Collector. I have many such friends who have this mentality and show spending negligence for travelling in trains.😢

Railways is trying their best.

Whenever I travelled in trains which were north-bound, I could find the clear difference b/w the South Central and other zone railways. It has surely got to do more with the commitment of the senior officials and the way people treat the trains.

I was a student till last year and often made train journeys from West Bengal to Tamil Nadu. Before my college, I never travelled anything but sleeper non AC. But one journey from WB to TN made me gag cuz me and my father couldn't use the washroom 1.5 days💀 as it was overflowing. Since then I'm using AC compartment so to ensure the washrooms aren't dirty. The problem still persist. A majority from North belt come to South as labourers. And in AC, majority are bangladeshi patients who come to South hospitals for better treatment. One may find me discriminatory, but I endured worst toilets and to flush them myself and it was only because of these people. We also need to educate people who can pay Rs 2k tickets but trash openly. Not always the Railways are wrong.

    Possible solutions:-
    1. Dedicated freight corridors
They can be phased out from the tracks used by passenger trains enabling the speed to increase. It will increase the profit for railways also
    2. Introduce trains which have complete unreserved coaches only, especially in the route having huge demand from migrant workers
    3. Promote luxurious trains(like the Maharaja express) especially for tourists who have high spending capacity. This enables a way to earn more
    4. Capacity building of tracks, which increases the speed. If speed increases, the frequency of train services which increase, which will help reduce overcrowding(since they have more options)

See the thing is simple. The more corrupt and careless the government is the more we face. South Central railway which I am based on is good and proper functioning we still have better options and proper restrictions on non selling of gutka , etc . Nut North railways are a nightmare for us to handle. Many trains come which I receive complaints but am in no position to do anything during the 5 minute halt. For instance I got a complain about clogged bathroom in general compartment. In Northern trains people wont agree to move which leads to delaying and we have to reason for that which is a big task. My TTE friends told me that those trains are Nightmare because even the Sleeper compartment is filled with non reservation tickets.. The only change to be done is government trying to put Vande bharat etc on seperate tracks or deviate its traffic or increase general compartments and pur a restriction based on 2s seat allotment. That’s the only way . Until the government starts thinking about our good rather than their profit we are doomed.

They will look at the potential numbers of travellers and they will calculate the amount of trains and tracks needed to service to all those travellers in a accepteble manner. But what about our politicians and authorities? To get votes they will increase trains, bring in flashy new trains but they will never increase tracks and underlying infrastructure because that would require actual work, money and it's not that sexy and won't bring you votes. Running flashy trains on an outdated and overcrowded infra is like driving a Porsche on a pothole filled road. So in the end we are doomed unless this mindset changes. You will trains generally clean in Kerala, same applies to stations. Now that you find a lot migrant labour who travels across, this has come down a bit. But the system works better here. However, despite high traffic (and they all pay ), there has not been much intitiatives to improve the infrastructureinfrastructure, much of the state runs on single line - doubling the track has hit endless delays. Theres no argument hence for more trains - but most of the local trains runs with outdated coaches. You find much better coaches running in other states where the traffic is much less.
I worked as a supplier to railways and I can say that they can trim down the labour size for many outdated tasks, subcontract for unskilled jobs to save on costs. Being a public transportation system it wont work raising ticket prices, esp as its depended more by the lower classes. Theres more to say on hygiene but its a cultural issue that what railways could handle. Well one can only hope that things turn out better.

More like don't board in general coaches? I'm from UP and we always board in AC 2 in Rajdhani. Services and hygiene both are great. @@Stoic_27
