Deus Ex Machina of Sutek bringing life was super silly.

How did that even work? Why does flying through the same vortex which Sutekh had used across the span of billions of years to navigate across every inch of time and space to empower himself suddenly become fatal and kill him?

"Fan-wanky" is the perfect description - well done 😂
I whole-heartedly agree with your review. My worry is that Series 2 was completed just as Series 1 began airing, so RTD hasn't heard the feedback or responses from the fans... therefore we may get a very similarly structured/mixed Series 2.
I do love Mrs Flood and have many theories, but they need to pull something big out of the bag with her character, ideally something they've not done before to keep the majority of us engaged. At the moment Mrs Flood is getting the Missy treatment with her introductions... but I want more!!!

Really enjoyed this video! I had been looking forward to hearing your thoughts, and had been missing your reactions, but understand why you'd want to wait til the end of the season.
I agree with many of your takes, if not all of them. I think the season really struggled from being too short, with episodes being edited down and scenes missing. I also think the pacing and order of episodes was lacking. With Ncuti's filming time was limited, I wish we could have had more Doctor/Ruby adventures to solidify their relationship. The acting on both their parts was phenomenal, they just didn't have the time they needed.
RTD's writing is always a mixed bag. His original run is my favorite era of Doctor Who, but same as before, he often relies too much on cleverness and gimmicks while not spending enough time on crafting a cohesive and satisfying story.
I did overall enjoy most episodes of the season on their own, though that comes with filling in a lot of blanks with head canon, which I don't always mind. I'm hopeful the coming seasons can find their footing a bit more, and give things more room to breathe, whether thats through more episodes, longer episodes, or less convoluted twists.

It was Doctor Who, quirky hokey cheesy and absolutely brilliant, it's the lucky dip from your childhood, you never know what you'll get. We took out Sutekh by taking him for walkies through a black hole and tore him to shreds. You can't judge this show by normal standards... it's never been normal.

I think this season was incredible on some aspects such as The Devils Chords (Mostly just Jinkx serving at all times like the Goddess she is, sorry Sasha), Dot & Bubble (Which is underrated, possibly my second favourite episode. #TeamSlug/Dot) & 73 Yards which really gave me It Follows vibes & that was remarkable. Sure Rogue, Space Babies & Empire of Death left me feeling slightly unimpressed by the events that occurred throughout, especially the rushed relationship in Rogue. Ianto & Jack from the adult spinoff Torchwood nailed the workings of a developing relationship which Rogue & The Doctor skipped entirely just BECAUSE.. All in all, I did think this season was better than Chris Chibnall's Era but here's hoping Season 2 has more to offer.

Spoiler warning for Doctor Who series 10-14.
Lots of similar feelings with some differences. Having David Tennant & Catherine Tate back was enough for me to enjoy Wild Blue Yonder. I preferred 73 yards to Boom - I'm not sure why I didn't love Boom. As for 73 yards, I liked the creepy atmosphere and seeing Ruby grow from an 18 year old to a 40 year old and not letting the mysterious woman hold her back too much.
I liked a lot of Rogue (though the Bridgerton references were lost on me) but I have come to despise fakeout deaths and Ruby's offscreen "death" followed by the Doctor instantly believing it and the flashback to him speaking to Ruby's mum asking him to keep her safe all irritated me. It felt like a failed attempt at what Moffat (mostly) managed in the Series 10 finale.
I enjoyed a fair amount of the finale two parter. However, I was quite annoyed when I saw Mrs Flood die and realised that the Doctor was going to magically undo all the deaths by the end of the episode. Also, Sutekh was defeated too easily and the "bring death to death" thing made little sense. Similar to you, I liked the reveal of Ruby's mother's identity (Star Wars tried to do this and failed) but thought the pointing thing was dumb and unnecessary and I hope they explain the snow & Carol of the bells next season.
All in all, I'm glad we've had more Dr Who but I still find myself missing the Moffat era sometimes. Or maybe I just miss being a teenager! Who nose.

For the most part a fun season with a likeable Tardis team. Sadly it suffers from consistent pacing and tone issues whilst feeling derivative of previous seasons. If I were to rank the episodes:
8/9 Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death: I went in with zero investment in the mystery boxes so had more fun with the finale than most, but it's still messy and should have been saved for a later season and given more time to flesh it out.
7 Devil's Chord: Almost great with multiple creative moments but doesn't live up to being a musical about the Beatles.
6 The Church on Ruby Road: A fun character intro but the story is over before it begins
5 Space Babies: It's fun, a little low brow but has enough heartfelt moments with 15 and Ruby to make it work.
4 Rogue: very witty and has a rare Doctor romance I can in theory see growing , however it doesn't earn a somber ending.
3 73 Yards: I love it but mostly thanks to head canons.
2 Dot and Bubble: Russell's most solid script of the season with a fascinating ending.
1 Boom: Everything I love about Moffat's writing and gives Ncuti a unique acting challenge.

Wasn’t the best season but it was pretty good, I had fun, my only complaint since the 60th has been Rose’s gender identity being the reason she’s able to survive the all powerful mind of a Timelord, and Rose and Dona being mean to 14 for being a man.

I totally agree with the points you made, especially with “Space Babies” and the finale.
I feel like this series suffers the same after as the past few, which is a lot of missed potential. The focus was definitely put on showing off the new budget rather than creating more complex, interesting story beats.
Imagine a version of “The Devils Chord” with a more ghostly Maestro.
And every time they kill someone they become more “real” and a part of the real world. Visually I think the sort of makeup and FX the ghosts had in the “Before the flood” two-parter in S9 would have added to the more fantasy aspect of the character well. And when Ruby is being… held by music notes? Near the end of the episode, perhaps Maestro could even possess Ruby (With some explanation relating to the “Song inside her soul”) just because I think Millie would SLAY in that role.
“73 Yards” was one of my favourite episodes, but I couldn’t help but think it would’ve been a perfect episode for RYAN back in S12? Imagine The Doctor, Yaz, and Graham all run away from him and he stops Roger Ap William (Or whatever his name was. Just this time without the big time skip). That would perfectly foreshadow his exit at the end of S12, with him becoming more independent.
They definitely could’ve swapped “Dot and Bubble” and “Rogue”, then had a scene at the end of DAB of The Doctor feeling bad about Lindy and her mum being dead (Or whatever the twist was), so he finally offers to find Ruby’s mum, therefore leading into the finale.
“Empire of Death” felt like a really long recap of Flux in a way, so I think maybe changing it so Sutekh only latched onto the TARDIS post 13-14 regeneration, just to narrow the scope a bit, would be better. And maybe he escapes and takes human form, eventually giving birth to Ruby and leaving her as his future reincarnation? (I don’t know, I just think if you’re going to build up Ruby’s mother so much, you have to deliver. Otherwise it just feels cheap.)
And narrowing the scope of the episode makes some sense with the lore of the show. Are you telling me Sutekh was there when the TARDIS blew up in S5? Or that there was a little baby Suetekh on the mini TARDIS in S8? Are there two Sutekhs because of the bigeneration and double TARDIS’?
I probably shouldn’t go on too much, but my point is that this series could’ve been amazing if it just had a bit more thought put into it.
    Love the video 💙

I wasn't a fan of this season, mostly due to the writing. It's as if Chibnall never left 😂 The Maestro was definitely the highlight, but I hated the musical number. Ruby's mum being a normal person is fine, but makes no fucking sense. Dramatically pointing at a sign in order to name your baby kinda falls flat if no-one else is around to see it. Also, why are you even naming the baby you literally abandoned seconds ago? The mystery box approach to storytelling can work so well, but they really screwed the pooch on this one. Speaking of which, was Sutekh supposedly there when the Tardis exploded? Were there 13 of him flying around Gallifrey in the Time War? Was he duplicated along with 15th's Tardis? How did Sutekh even die, by touching the time vortex? Wouldn't he just fall through it? And why would his death reverse everything? The more I think about it, the more I hate it 🤣

I loved this series. It's a 10 out of 10 for me. I know I'm one of the few that likes it, but I don't care. A lot of people don't like Ncuti as the doctor. I just don't care if people don't like the series or the doctor.

Mavity. I hate Mavity. There are so many almost there episodes that then kind of blew it. I really want to love Ncuti. Just like I really want to love Jodie. The writing for Jodie - ugh. I was prepared to assign some of the problem Ncuti has to writing . . . Until we got episode after episode of full out crying Doctor. Not that the Doctor has never cried . . . He just hasn’t established the connection emotionally to the rest of the Doctor. And wasn’t the point of Bi-generation that the tortured damaged Doctor can sit and heal so the emotionally strong Doctor can saunter off? (Kind of like Dissociation disorder) So why does this Doctor have NO RANGE? The ability to cry on demand is not the mark of talent. Withholding.

I have to disagree with the flying in The Tardis and the butterfly effect thing - basically this the first episode in a new season for an entirely new audience. I've watched a tonne of time orientated TV shows and there's always the one butterfly effect question that comes into play. I think it was a fun way of explaining it to the audience how it works in DW and how the Tardis has a compensator that helps deal with minor changes. I will agree that The Doctor literally reviving a dead butterfly was bizarre though. I love the flying in the Tardis, it's so fun - I'd argue it's better than them being tossed and thrown around.

I loved Boom, Dot and Bubble and 73 Yards, what a run of episodes in the middle there. Everything else was...a bit disappointing. A mixed bag of entertaining, emotional beats that didn't quite hit (maybe because they felt rushed/unearned), great acting, and an unsatisfying conclusion.
I did not like Devils Chord at all unfortunately, the slow parts were boring and the rest was maybe too silly for me? Overall this series gave me 3 great episodes I'll watch again (I also loved the Giggle from the specials) so I can't complain too much.

Definitely a rough start with Space Babies which is one of the all time lows for the show, and didn't care much for The Devil's Chord either. After that though everything was between okay to really good. I think there a lot missing with Ncuti as the Doctor. This isn't on him as I know he's a really good actor, but it seems like he's being told to spin around and enthusiastically yell his lines and that's all he needs to do. I just don't see any of that ancient time lord that is always underneath. Boom was the only episode where his dialogue and behavior seemed in character.

In a word ....NO! the specials last year was meh nostalgia bait for ratings but they were ....just a non event .... Series 14 however was a mess and every week was awful or just below par ....73 yards was okay though, the finale was okay too but everything else ....yeah this era sadly is my least favourite so far of 2005-presenf ....it's better than mid 80s era though ....but still it's a bit empty sadly .... The power of the doctor did the anniversary better! Heck even Capaldi's twice upon a time felt a satisfying 60th story ....well 55 years by then haha! It all feels like popcorn fluffy fodder these days sadly ....series 1,5,8,10 and 11 all felt like incredibly strong jumping on points and cohesive .... But there we go this feels .....so messy

*Series Fourteen* was one of the most needlessly flawed pieces of media we have yet seen. And I use that term very specifically because I expect bad, sloppy writing from the usual suspects but when it comes from someone who I not only believe can do better but know for an absolute fact can do better, it’s just all the more disappointing seeing what a disappointment this series was.
Let’s start with the main character, the Fifteenth Doctor. As everyone loves to remind me, he’s not like those yucky other doctors, he’s ✨ T R A U M A F R E E ✨ Because of biregeneration BS, the Doctor now doesn’t have any of the baggage he’s held onto for centuries so the darker aspects of his character? The ruthlessness, the rage, the edge that made the character truly three dimensional? Yeah that’s all gone now. 🙂 And what replaced it? Well now, the Doctor is upbeat, peppy, quirky and above all, weepy. Oh boy does this Doctor love a cry. Now that’s not a problem inherently… but when crying becomes one of the core character traits of a person who was defined by his strength, courage and resolve for so long? It’s more than a bit off putting to say the least. But even all that would be fine if it was part of a great character arc… if there was one, which is the actual biggest problem with this incarnation. Maybe not every series, but the majority of individual series try to put the Doctor on a journey to show how he’s changed and grown over these thirteeee- eight episodes, but 15… doesn’t. He’s exactly the same character at the end of EOD as he is at the start of CORR. He doesn’t change, doesn’t gain a new perspective, doesn’t even really have any indication that his adventures have had any weight on him at all. He’s just static, the same upbeat and cheery fellow from beginning to end. And while Ncuti plays that part well, it’s not a very interesting character to watch unfold either when he neither grows nor changes from his experiences.
But the Doctor doesn’t have to carry the series himself, that’s what the companion is for! And Ruby Sunday is absolutely… there. Like 15, she’s fun and quirky but… what else? Oh, she’s an orphan, it’s very very important you remember that! This will definitely have a satisfying payoff for sureee. 🙃 Anyway, Ruby suffers from the same problems as the Doctor, namely that her character is completely static and remains the same from beginning to end, there’s no sense she had grown from her experiences or is a new person now as was the case with every other companion. Even The Fam, butchered as their characterisation often was, had a more compelling character journey than Ruby.
And this plays right into the dynamic she has with the Doctor, because they’re instant besties from the start. They just get along brilliant and from the first scene, Ruby is 100% in love with this world and has no reservations at all… which is very, very boring. There’s no growth, no challenge, no notion that they’re making each other better or that they need each other for any reason. 15 is so perfect that he doesn’t need a companion, and Ruby is so perfect that all of time and space doesn’t phase her. So when she leaves, we aren’t saying goodbye to a character we’ve gone through it with, who we watched become better and overcome their flaws, we’re saying bye to the same woman we met in CORR.
The most accurate thing anyone has ever said about this pairing is that people like watching Ncuti and Millie interact more than 15 and Ruby and that is 100% right. If you think you like them, it’s only the actors you like not the characters they’re portraying.
But hey, the Doctor and companion are only a small part of the story. This is a RTD series, so there’ll be a great series long mystery to get invested I- 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Even in text form, I couldn’t hold it in lmao. The “””mystery””” is so painfully half assed that I don’t know why they bothered. They went out of their way to show us that Ruby was a special miracle baby with the mother’s Trickster cosplay, the ominous pointing, the inability to find her and the snow and music which materialised out of nowhere in a way the Doctor had never seen before.
“Oh, she was only special because you THOUGHT she was special!”
    Fuck. Off. 🤣
We thought she was special because the show told us she was special. We never would have assumed that if you didn’t give us reason to suppose so. But hey, I can take the hint - you don’t want anyone invested in your stories, Russell. Ok, I’ll heed you and accept Mrs Flood is a crazy old woman who talks to herself for no reason, and anyone thinking otherwise is an idiot.
    As for the episodes themselves?
CORR needed reworking from the ground up, so much about it just doesn’t work.
Space Babies is an embarrassment to the art of writing and we should be ashamed as a species for its existence.
Devil’s Chord was a really interesting idea with a great villain, ruined by a slapdash ending.
Boom was a pretentious pile of wank and I’m amazed anyone takes that garbage writing seriously.
73 Yards was a genius concept, hamstrung by its unexplained ending - no, it’s not clever or subtle, it’s lazy.
Dot & Bubble was shaping up to be a really layered and complex episode about our society’s relation to technology before it ruined itself by being a ham fisted racism bad message.
Rogue was a decent idea with a rushed romance and a sloppy execution.
TLORS was a really great, dark and interesting episode, butt
Empire Of Death was an insult to the craft of writing and the audience’s intelligence.
Overall, I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it or that it’s not worth watching because it is. But was it also shallow, underwhelming and so far below the heights of what this really could have been if Russell had just tried instead of slapping together some half baked ideas? Also absolutely.
Needlessly flawed when it had absolutely no reason to be.
