DId you notice the minor theme in this episode - the contunual reference to menstruation - in a teen show that absolutely wasn't allowed to explicitly mention menstruation? Not sure why Whedon decided to play this up so much in this particular episode - but the way it's handled is neat. Especially like the otherwise throwaway sight gag of Xander going through Buffy's purse looking for a stake and recoiling at a tampon instead. No-one quite does the prop-based gag like Xander does in this show.

I screamed far too loud for a dignified adult when I saw the notification 😂 Been waiting for this one.

Spike and Dru!

Juliet Landau (Drusilla) also plays an incarnation of Romana in Big Finish Doctor Who audios.

One of the most iconic scenes in the whole show when Spike ( one of the greatest characters in The Buffyverse ) rolls into town and drives right over the Sunnydale sign, you said earlier you knew he was in the show, well you wont be disappointed with the entertainment value of this character. School Hard is one of the best episodes of S2. James Marsters was so impressive in the role, he became an instant fan favourite. Some great writing in this episode, when Xander goes to get Buffy's bag and pulls out a yoyo, tampon and then stake, this shows Buffy from child, to teenager, to adolescent showing how she is growing up. Great too when Joyce clobbers Spike on the head with the axe. All in all a great episode for early S2 with Angel/Spike/Drusilla who have a shared history through the centuries to add to the arc of the Buffyverse as a whole.

Juliette Landau (Drusilla) was in Burton's Ed Wood movie, along with her father, Martin Landau. She came up with the ideas of how to play Drusilla during her meeting with Joss and that's basically what got her the job. Because they didn't really have much in the planning stages for what do with her character beyond probably just standing around like a bride of Dracula type figure.

Those last moments are a statement. Vampires are no longer a religious cult, but mental punk rockers. A big shift for the show...

Notice that while Drusilla seems sickly and weak, and Spike appears at first to be in charge of the vamp-gang (now that the annoying one is gone), Spike seems to take orders from Drusilla if you watch closely. Dru is the one who told spike to make nice with the other vamps and he did, Dru told spike to kill the annoying one (if you watch closely, you can see it, even though she doesn't say it directly), she did tell Spike that the annoying one didn't want to play with her. That was a hint hint, and then you see the erotic look on her face when Spike kills the annoying one.

Notice the vampire Spike sacrificed to Buffy at the Bronze is the same one who falsely claimed to be at the crucifixion. Not only was spike seeing how Buffy fights, but he also got rid of a potential competitor to his leadership of the vamp-gang.

Ahhh, the 1st of 2 episodes everyone waits for the reactor to get to!

The Annoying One had to go because the kid playing him hit a growth spurt. "Joyce" is Buffy's mom. Drusilla is a hot mess of crazy, psychic, soulless monster and sweet little girl. A fan favorite. You're exactly correct that this ep is when they light the afterburner.

'A little less ritual, and a little more fun' feels like a writers statement as much as anything else! The Annointed One in comparison to Spike is probably a pretty good representation of the difference we have between S1 & S2 onwards.

I really love Peter Capaldi as the doctor, and he is my favorite reboot doctor. Moffett is also my showrunner. I will most definitely be back when Jodie is done. Don't particularly care for her era

Capaldi's final line "Doctor I let you go" has so much subtext. It's also Capaldi letting go of the role (he's been very clear he wouldn't come back as he feels he accomplished what he wanted to do with the character) and Moffat, who (at the time at least) never intended to come back letting go of the show.

1:50 To be fair Christmas in July is probably what Australians are feeling like every year. Like the midnight mass probably would be cute during hot summer, but having all the festivities and long cooking in those types of temperatures would totally kill the mood for me. 6:40 Hopefully we are not gonna see Daleks a lot after this episode. RTD and Moffat really used them a lot to the point of not making them scary anymore. 26:00 The introduction to Jodie was really solid and upcoming episode is probably one of my favourite in her run. Can't wait for Deepa to be graced by all the new characters. I just hope we could rewrite the past and give Jodie some better scripts through those next few seasons and that Chibs made her watch at least some previous episodes of the show. Like I get the idea of having a Doctor played by someone who knows nothing about the franchise - that's really good concept overall, because it would let some fresh things into the role, but at the same time I feel like knowledge of previous portrayals of the Doctor would ground Jodie's performance much more - especially in those more problematic badly written scripts... But oh well, crossing my fingers that next ... episodes won't make Deepa want to drop the show. Too many have already orphaned it.

8:00 The issue wirh going to the present - is that Tardis almost always takes them to place where someone needs help. So you are going to Aldis, and it turns out to he infested by Cybermen, you want vacations in Hawaii - Weeping Angels gonna get you. Even if you gonna get lucky and you end up having great spa day - it's probably Doctor and dozen other people who gonna get ended, like in Midnight, where Donna just chilled and Doctor had one of the most horrifying sightseeing visits in his life.

I can't lie I forget this episode and Empress of Mars so much. Between the rest of this series being pretty good and the banger finale, the only redeemable elements are the brief fun moments with The Doctor and the companions
