One of the many metaphors contained within this show is that of growing up. Going from a care free person to suddenly having responsibility thrust upon you is not like flicking a switch. The person you are becoming does not change the person you already were. ❤

I definitely disagree about Buffy already being at the point where she prioritizes her slaying to just being a high school girl. We saw in the first episode "Welcome to the Hellmouth" that Buffy didn't want anything to do with slaying but would slay a vampire if she ran into one. I would say her actions in this episode align with that sentiment.

Yeah I remember commenting in an earlier video that I don't think Luke has quite grasped Buffy's character as you're supposed to by this point. However it's still early days hopefully he'll get it soon. He's enjoying the show in general which is great.

The band that plays at the Bronze this episode is called The Velvet Chain. The song they play "Strong" can be found on their album, The Buffy E.P.

No Spoilers, but this is the page you're supposed to be on by this point: What Buffy wants is to date guys, go to school, hangout with friends and be normal. Remember that Buffy is just a kid who *doesn't want to be the slayer* and is struggling very hard to have a normal life and be like other girls, but she's had this massive burden put on her shoulders against her will. She's definitely not at the stage of prioritising being the slayer above other things (and, subjectively, nor should she ever be). Remember this isn't like The Doctor choosing to steal a TARDIS and live a life of adventures while obeying the laws of time travel. Buffy never chose or wanted this.

I'm doing this thing where I see someone reacting to Buffy and I automatically subscribe. 😂

I think you're being a bit harsh on Buffy. Firstly she is a 16 year old girl and I think you're expecting her to be a bit more mature than she is. At the same time, she DID postpone her date with Owen that first evening to sit with Giles in a cemetary, and that ultimately ended up being pointless and nearly cost her Owen. Of course she's going to be skeptical when Giles comes round the next evening blathering about the same prophecy, trying to connect it to 5 people who died in a bus crash which they have no reason to assume is supernatural. I think Buffy's actions in this episode make a lot of sense, if she dropped everything every time the tiniest hint of vague threat appeared then she would have no life outside of slaying at all.

The thing that didn't make sense this ep was Owen himself who is just the weirdest mismash of traits to try to connoct the dream high school boy, which end up not going together at all and you wonder why Buffy or Cordelia would throw themselves at him. Maybe if it was Angel Buffy was dropping everything to be with then you woulda got it more, in which case fairs.

The catty bitchery between mean girl Cordy and former(ish) mean girl Buffy is always enjoyable.
SMG and Charisma Carpenter actually auditioned for what became each other's roles.
If you've ever seen "Cruel Intentions", you know that SMG is the ultimate Mean Girl. If she'd been cast as Cordy...it would have been the Cordelia Show.

I don't remember what I thought about this episode back in the day when I first watched it, but in retrospect I think she dreaming about dating and not prioritizing the slaying is correct and aligned to the character at this (early) point in the series. "Trust the process", keep watching and tell us in the future if you ever change your opinion on this 🥰

Poor Buffy. Too much pressure for a 16 year old girl

Don't know why this didn't show up in my notification, but I'm not too disappointed with this episode as it's my least favorite of S1.
I find it amusing that his expectation is for Buffy to be more mature than her sixteen years of age. Feels like expecting Xander not to be jealous of Buffy liking someone who isn't him.

The first season was very low budget and erratic as show was finding it's feet. You will notice a massive step up mid way through S2 and as it goes forward it just gets better and better. Great that you have really getting the show after only five episodes. You will love this show as it moves forward. This episode I thought was one of the weaker in S1. It does show however that after all Buffy is just teenage girl, and has all the desires and urges that brings, trying to live that life as normal as possible, but nothing is very simple in The Buffyverse!

Loved Buffy's outfits in this one. But not Cordelia's crimped hair look.

Crimped hair was very much a thing in the late 90's. Unfortunately.

Why does every reactor approve of Cordelia’s b*tchiness. Like, she is straight up cruel to Willow. Yet, when Xander does anything borderline selfish or says something that is irreverent (he is the comedic relief a lot of times) reactors give him side eye. Even though he is just in his feelings, and his relationship to Willow and Jessie should indicate he is a decent person. Like, reactors just be projecting their dislike for certain guys all of over the place. I don’t get it. It feels like people want to dislike him and do not want three dimensional characters.

I do feel this is the weakest s1 story like buffy slays in the outfit she wears but I feel this one is a bit of a snore
