"I hate this" to "it's my favourite episode". You are really getting the Joss Whedon effect early, Luke.

Let's just give credit to the fact that Angel/Buffy was a long time before Edward/Bella and at the time, was a much more rare concept than it's since become (not unheard of, but rare and certainly in "modern times" at the time, it hadn't been done in pop culture much for a long time). In fact when the Twilight series came out it was very strongly noticed by critics how much it seemed to be based on (obviously with differences, but still based on) the Buffy/Angel concept.

Angel is one of the best episodes of S1. His back story and flashbacks are one of the great things about the Buffyverse. We now know Angel is a vampire, but of course a very different one as he has a soul, but is tortured by his past deeds. As I said before you are so enthusiastic about this show, and is it just gets better and better. The Seasons following have a much bigger budget, and incredible writers with better special affects and cinematography. Love your reaction to when you realised that Angel was a vampire. Enjoy your journey.

Notice the casual demonstration of Slayer strength: she shoves a commercial pool table across a room. Those things weigh upwards of 1000 pounds...plus Darla's buck twenty.
Not many have the chemistry and sho'nuff on-screen kisses that SMG and Boreanz do.
Julie Benz had the best vamp face. It was horrifying, especially in contrast with her beauty. That shot of her in the window behind Joyce was chilling.

I think this only adds more mystery, or confusion to the character. Claiming to be recovered from evil and all. Knowing there's a spin-off is a bit of a spoiler, but his character development has a ways to go before that. One thing I noticed was that his main reason for saying he was afraid to go after the Master and his vamps (with Darla) really meant he didn't want to be outed as a vampire to Buffy.

Oh my Darla. SHE BROUGHT GUNS! More brain cells than 99.99% of all other vampires, all hail our dead queen. Am also thrilled that you like Being Human (UK), I adored that show, it did some really interesting things, and Mitchell is one of my favourite vampires.

Yeah, so nearly every YA series trope and fanfiction plotline you love comes from an author who loves this show. I wouldn't use words like copied or stolen, though, more like inspired. This show had been the inspiration for most YA storytelling of the last 20 years.

"Is her mom going to be weirded out by a topless man in the kitchen?". One day you'll know Joyce a little better... Yeah, we don't mention "The Rippoff That Shall Not Be Named" in Buffy fandom.

Darla saying "the war of independence" instead of "the Revolutionary War" was a signal of how old she is.

"I've shipped him and Buffy for a while now." it's episode 7, lol 😆
also at first I thought you were just saying you're a fan of being human, haha
this is my favorite episode of the season because of the intrigue with mysterious Angel in S1. I'm also a Bangel shipper

I won't say whether it is or is not, but just to keep you on the edge of your seat through Seasons 1-3, there is every possibility that the Angel series was made as a prequel. So who knows what may or may not happen to Angel on the Buffy series? 😈 Also, yes, the series (both of them, actually) do a long, lingering reveal of Buffyverse lore to always leave the audience wondering and wanting more. 😄

I love the fact that he said it was an Edward/Bella situation, because the amusing thing is in some ways Edward and Bella were less toxic. Edward was a jackass in many ways, but one thing he (and the writer got right) was allowing him to pass for the same age as the underage Bella. Angel cannot do that as Buffy had to tell Joyce Angel was in college when she tried to say tutored her. In that regard both relationships are still horrible, but in this issue of perception of age, Buffy and Angel can't not be toxic and Bella and Edward can.

Okay, I have to say this: Yes, Angel is good looking. But Buffy is 16 and Angel died when he was 26. It's beyond creepy. It's gross, especially when you realize that Angel is aware that he's way too old for her, which the series makes clear as well. Sorry, no offense ,but it's not romantic.
