    Chris, having made several purchases from you, I want to comment on something you did not touch on. There’s a huge difference in the QUALITY of shipping between you and the “free shipping” big A. Your packages are exquisitely done, with items individually wrapped and carefully placed in the shipping container and sealed with custom monogrammed shipping tape. With the big A, your item(s) get tossed into a box or, worse yet, an envelope, maybe a piece of bubble wrap is tossed in too, it’s haphazardly taped shut, and your lucky if nothing is lost or damaged before it arrives at your home. The care and quality displayed with your shipping clearly communicates you, the customer, are receiving something of value which you, the maker and sender, are proud of!
    Keep on doing it right, brother!
    Best regards!

    I bought a ton of shelf brackets from you earlier in the year and yeah the shipping cost did surprise me at first, but then I took a harder look at what you're selling these for vs what other sellers are (if the products are even available) and it's still very well worth it with the shipping cost. And then when I got the products, the quality was top-notch... no chipped ply, no splinters.

    This brings back nightmares, Chris. I used to have a small publishing business, and I lost 100% (yes…*all*) of my overseas customers when the USPS raised their rates one year. My problem is when the shipping cost seems ridiculous. I mail care packages etc to friends/family and some are very large and heavy. A few weeks ago I sent a like 40lb large box care package from Indianapolis to Seattle and is cost like between $25-30 with the cost of the box and tape etc. But then a week or so ago someone wanted to charge me like $80 to mail me 3 shirts in a tiny bundle and the distance between my house and their warehouse was like 6 or 7 miles away. That seems really suspicious to me. I have bought from this online store for the last 15yrs and obviously with the rise of costs I was expecting to pay some in shipping, but $80 seems ridiculous... If I could ship the items myself for less than half the amount people want to charge then they just lose my business. I have messaged some I am long time customers of and asked what the deal is and some newer ones to see if maybe there was a glitch, but if folks don't respond back I just take my business elsewhere. I think your shipping costs are pretty reasonable comparatively or your prices don't feel so high that it helps me justify it. But some places price things so high then want me to spend $80 to have it shipped... I can't justify that. Cause it isn't about the cost at that point it has to be something else. Also I love the transparency and supporting cool small businesses etc. I will keep buying stuff from your shop as I am able, paying for nice shipping, being a Patreon, and look forward to it ;) Hope y'all are well! :)

    I recommend looking into using Grainger for your shipping supplies. When I had to order boxes I checked both Uline & Grainger out and Grainger was my pick as they have warehouses all over the place, that helps save on shipping if you have it delivered to their warehouse for pick up. I've saved hundreds from doing that.
    For example one order of 24x48 boxes would cost me about $150 to have them shipped to my house, that's as much or more than what the boxes cost! They also have a subscription that gets you free shipping which would practically pay for itself in one order.

  • @TomLigman
    @TomLigman Před rokem +1

    The reason I prefer vendors that have “free” shipping is that I know right when I see the product listing whether I can afford it or not. Finding something interesting or even exciting at a reasonable price only to discover after creating a login is actually 30% more expensive with shipping is a heartbreak and I almost never finish that order. I know it costs money to transport goods, I just want the final and inclusive price at the beginning.

    Great video and I’m all for making this more widely known. I send hundreds of packages with the US being the biggest market outside my home country and I’ve adopted a fair ship model. I’ll ship and charge the postal rate I pay Royal Mail. The cost of packaging is baked into the price of the product. I get lots of enquiries about shipping and when I explain everyone understands my policy and proceeds. It’s fair after all and often they choose to buy more!
    I hate how Etsy pushes free shipping. Come the revolution I’d be all for banning it.

    OH MAN! Your reversible French cleat brackets are what I need to make. My shop area is in basement, and my storage wall has air duct bulkhead butting up to it. So I made 2 sets of brackets, 1 for the area where bulk head is not, and 1 where it is. The latter resembling the bracket on bottom in your photo. They are functional but could be longer, and certainly not as elegant looking as yours. I wish I could design things better. If I see it I can usually make it. I guess it comes with experience.

    I work as a freight analyst for a distribution company in the kitchen and bath (plumbing supplies, per our NMFC codes) space. Parcel and LTL costs are profit margin. Most people do not realize how important that perspective is when it comes to Sales strategies, so I'll repeat: Your freight costs are profit margin. For every dollar you give up in freight cost, you need a few points (before or after the decimal) in margin to compensate for that loss.
    Parcel is something of a "we win no matter what" industry. UPS, FedEx, DHL - all price your shipments based on actual weight of an item or dimensional weight. Which ever is greater is how the price you. The higher your dimensional divisor, the less this matters to your P&L each month. For anyone without a parcel contract, your DIM divisor is a standard 130 or so. What does that mean? If you ship an item in a box weighing 10# and the box DIMs are 24x12x8, then your shipment will cost 10# in shipment rating, or ((24x12x8)/130) 18# in shipment rating. Crazy right? That's how shipping works. Everything is calculated off the greater "weight" - fuel, service, additional handling, demand surcharge, etc. - EVERYTHING.
    So, if my DIM divisor is 275 then that 10# box is now doing to cost 10# to ship because its dimensional weight is 8.4#. See the difference? This is why shipping isn't free.
    That 10# rated at 18# DIM weight (130 divisor) would probably cost around $22 to ship, but if DIM weight is less than the entered weight, then that shipment is only $14. So, $14 in margin is easier for Amazon to hide than $22, so people (myself included) buy form Amazon versus a smaller retailer. It's economies of scale. Actually, based on Amazon's UPS contract (which I have some knowledge of, they have a minimum base rate that no one else can attain, so the above box will cost more like $8-10 to ship than my other calculations.
    Ok, I'm really rambling now. Sub'd.

    Good to see you again, Chris! Shipping has always been a thorn in my side. My wife and I made some items around the holidays to sell and to sell them with shipping caused the price to skyrocket. We ended up just staying local and losing the business. I have tons of ideas of things that I “could” create and sell, but generally any profit I project just goes out the window in shipping costs, and I don’t have the ability to mass produce, even on your scale, to help offset those costs. Haven’t given up, but it’s tough to find a good balance that makes it worthwhile to push something to market. Kudos to you for making it happen!

What a lot of people don't realize is that many products on Amazon cost more than if they were purchased directly from the supplier AND paid the shipping costs. I always err on the side of takng a slight loss on shipping rather than profiting on shipping. Spent $80k+ on labels last year. Free shipping comes at a high cost. Thanks for making this. I drop the seller a line and ask if they would be willing to send it if I pay all the costs. I emphasise that I expect those costs to include the packing materials and their time and effort not just the cost of the carrier. So far I've only had one seller say no but there have been a few where the costs were litterally just to high.

On certain things, I don't mind eating the cost if at the end of the day my customers are happy and I'm still making a profit. I ran a business surprisingly similar to yours for 10 years. The free shipping never made sense. I sold products from small to rather large (imagine seven 65 lb boxes for one order, some assembly required) and much of the work was semi-custom. If I priced to include shipping then it would have to be worst case scenario for a single item from my location on the east coast to the west coast. Then the customer that ordered 4 of the item, not unusual, would get screwed as shipping costs are extremely front-loaded. I always quoted shipping based on the size and weight of the package with a factor for supplies and actual UPS charges to the customer. Short haul commercial addresses got a deal and long haul residential paid through the nose. I'm sure I lost sales because of the shipping costs, but I don't think as many as if I had priced everything to ship "free". I never ran specific numbers like you did, but I probably came close to breaking even on supplies. I did not charge for the labor to package as I figured that was part of the labor in building the product.

      You make a key point. When I am paying for shipping, I will usually place bigger orders to take advantage of the front-loading on that shipping costs. When the shipping is “free”…well then I usually don’t place large orders because I know I’m getting screwed by all that shipping included in the cost.

    I've hated free shipping from its inception. It's obvious that you're not getting anything for free, they're just building it into the product price. So the more you buy, the more you're actually paying for shipping, per dollar spent.

  • @tedr5182
    @tedr5182 Před rokem

    Shipping is not free. Shipping cost is built in the price of the product. A good business price it’s product based on all the expenses + profit. Having said that, I always shop based on the out-of-pocket cost to me. 😅 It’s just sad that some merchants charge a lot on shipping/handling, thus making the total cost very high. I usually steer clear from these merchants. I would rather see the actual cost to me, and just label it “shipping included” or “free shipping”. That makes shopping pleasant for consumers.

  • @MadMonk67
    @MadMonk67 Před rokem

    It seems like you should break it down by cost+shipping per item to be more accurate. I'm sure you could go over your records with details about the items and the cost to ship each instead of including your inventory on-hand. After all, to me as a customer, your on-hand plywood inventory doesn't matter to me so why should your on-hand shipping inventory?
    Either way, your point is still valid about free shipping. But, I don't know anyone who believes that "free shipping" is being eaten by the company. It's expected to be rolled into the cost of the item if no shipping costs is added. Maybe you've seen different from your customers.

    Most likely there's enough profit in the products you sell to offset the loss in shipping and that's okay. It's business. I envy those who can make this work as a business. Some 3rd party sellers on Amazon charge exorbitant shipping fees that are not refundalble if returned. That's where they make their profit. My wife wanted to buy a dress for about $45 or so. The shippng was something like $20-$25. There's nothing we need that justifies those high shipping costs to cover a plastic bag that the item would come in. I don't subscribe to Amazon Prime becaused there's nothing I need overnight. I plan ahead.

      Start with "The E-Myth Revisited" by Michael Gerber. Listen to it 3 times at least. Having done that, and deciding you still want to go on with it, look for your local chamber of commerce and small business association if there is one. It's a great source for low cost or free classes, and often those classes are put on by businesses looking for business like yours. There is also a mentor group, I forget what it's called. They have you fill out an application and pair you with someone to give advice and mentor you.
      As far as doing the books, the part everyone hates as he mentions in "The E-Myth", you may do well to get some guidance on what to do and handle yourself in the beginning. There is a reason the accountants you have spoken with won't touch you, and it's nothing against you as a person. It's you as a business person. There is a reason so many small businesses fail, and it's not what you may think. Go listen to the E-Myth to discover why, and hopefully how to avoid a lot of pain.
