This wood slab was supposed to become a large desk. But when the client backed out, we had to change directions...and turned it into something much better...and "bigger".

I subscribe to a LOT of woodworking channels. I rarely find myself watching the ones without narration anymore. The talking is what really personalizes the content and keeps me engaged, and your scripts are some of the best out there.
I agree...unless the piece is something REALLY special.
As someone who needs to understand the context of the project especially when it's outside of my expertise, narration that is well done, engaging, and to the point is something I don't mind at all. And though making a second video without the narration requires more time out of your day, is a good way to get more views and make more people happy. Don't let the trolls pull you down.
I agree, I watch a lot of woodworking video’s, some from other countries that don’t speak English and although the work is great, you’re wondering what is the build until the music starts playing at the end!
I enjoy your commentary of the projects, you guide me through the process. Give me insight into your decisions and direction.
@@Foureyes.Furniture it would have to be world class special to be worth watching the eversame cuts and sanding and finishing without any explanation of what idea sits behind "the build". Even though explaining the same step every time feels probably repetetive to both maker and consumer, every video is somebody's first woodmaking video and every video is somebody's 5,000th watch. There needs to be some sort of balance, at least giving hints about the design and steps and how this project is connected to what you do is essential to make thrilling content.
Else you can just watch one of these channels showing 10 hours of trainrides without comment or a campfire or whatever. Woodworking isn't that zen ;)
OMG the whole reason I watch your videos is what you say. I don’t build, use tools, or play with wood but I enjoy your humor and storytelling.
Appreciate that...if everyone were like you. I could save myself a lot of time by getting rid of the building portions. Just a blank screen with me rambling on about God knows what for 28 minutes.
@@Foureyes.Furniture see, I think I'd watch that video too!
@@marialeotta2973 me too
Hey wait…isn’t that what podcasts are for!😂
@@Foureyes.Furniture: Honestly, both aspects are enjoyed. Like "they" say, "A picture is worth a thousand words".
What?! No talking. The videos you narrate over are some of the most soothing and enjoyable content on CZcams! I love your narration. Perfect mix of description, thought process and humor!
We're super Fans from Tacoma Seattle fans club.... my wife and I washed all your videos and love the way you teach.... Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks.... keeping doing great artwork 🎨 🖼 ...
Personally, as someone who wants to make furniture for themselves, hearing at least part of your thought process and how you overcome some of the challenges is really enlightening and I love hearing you talk. Keep it up man, you're doing beautifully.
Wow, thank you! Appreciate that :)
I agree on the problem solving, many could learn from you on that alone.
The majority of us are inspired by you and your comments so thank you
Quick question, how have you not filled your shop to the rafters with stuff? I’m always blown away and jealous by the blank walls.
I would say "I just like things clean"...but the truth is I'm extremely self-conscious and suffer from imposter syndrome, which makes me believe everything is going to end at any moment, forcing me into acting like a guest in my own shop and keeping me from ever putting stakes down and feeling like I truly belong.
...that and the cinderblock is a pain to drill into.
@@Foureyes.Furniture I only discovered you 2 weeks ago but I could hear every word of this in your voice.
@@Jessev741 SO TRUE!
Don't believe this guy. He didn't start his comment with "Promotion or Shine" so you know he didn't watch to the end of the video. /S
@@Foureyes.Furniture God bless you bro, we all have our own imperfections... ❤❤
I love your commentary. Your uncertainty and willingness to talk the audience through the decision making process is refreshing. Most of us are just winging it, all the time. At least we can hear your reasoning and learn a little something too.
i loved your math for justifing the investment of the cnc
Almost a million subs, so proud how far your channel has come!!! =)
Thank you...It's kinda hard to believe...but I'm very thankful for it :)
🎉
I do think your channel is at it's best when you are discussing what you are doing during the build. If I didn't want to hear it I would put the volume to 0. Keep up the great work! The coffee table looks great!
I appreciate that!
First of all, I'm seriously happy I found your channel. Second, I'm extremely appreciative of the free planes and class for this table! Third, I'm extremely impressed by both of you. I truly inspire to be just at half your level one day. I can't wait to build this. Also, I'll be purchasing many other plans after this project is done. Cheers guys!
I actually like listening to you. You tell it in such a way that can be understood by those of us who don’t have a lot of knowledge but come here both to learn and be entertained! Keep talking, your voice is soothing and you talk naturally as if you are talking to one person.
As an auditory learner, the voiceovers (or direct to cameras) really help me to process what I'm seeing on the screen. I LOVE what you do.
Your mood is calm and relaxed. Your voice is clear and understandable. Your comments are on the mark, neither condescending nor insulting. And your woodworking skills are top notch. I encourage you to ignore the trolls. (Yes, I know their comments can hurt.) Thanks for your great channel.
Thank you! 😊
Appreciate the kind words of encouragement :)
I agree. Don't listen to trolls who try to suppress or silence you or change your commentary! Keep up the great work.
I absolutely agree here.
@@Foureyes.Furniture i also love your come backs to haters online they are hilarious
@@Foureyes.Furniture thank you for the effort that goes into this work, and these videos.
a big reason I watch/listen to your videos is because you have a really nice voice, and talk about a variety of things. I'm glad you can accommodate others with another channel without speaking. keep up the good work.
Your videos and narration are by far the most relaxing of the several hundred I subscribe to. I’m a fan of both silence and talking but I really think you should see the overwhelming amount of comments in here that feel the same way I do. It makes you channel feel personal to me. Especially if you’re quiet in real life. What a treat for the viewers.
I love your drawings and diagrams, they help understand everything much better. So glad you kept them.
Thanks...I weirdly love making them :)
You're absolutely spot on about being a good teacher ( I suggest you're more than good) ... you have the ability to break down complex processes into easily understood sub processes ... in addition, the dry humor is fabulous commentary! ... thoroughly enjoy watching your work flow, as well as admiring the design work!
Thank you so much...really appreciate that :)
Exactly. I subscribed a few weeks ago or maybe 6, I don’t know what time is anymore. Anyway, I’m an architect and enjoy learning about the design process and physical properties wood has. Exciting to learn how splaying (edit: spalting , probably misspelled it) happens. That’s new for me. But I’d love to have the coffee table you designed in this vid. I just don’t have the slab of walnut I’d prefer it be made from nor the 5 or so days to build it. But I definitely feel that I could. You are really a great teacher.
First thing, you are amazingly humble. The fact that you gave credit to haters for inspiring you to create a second channel is amazing and inspiring. I like your speaking voice and enjoy your self criticism and banter.
Thing two, you really are an excellent teacher. It's amazing you offer build plans that are so detailed and more so that you are offering this one for free.
Type C, I think you make top notch work and though you may be more critical of yourself than many other folks would be, you still put it out there and show your successes and mistakes.
thank you for the kind words. I have to admit though...part of that "thank you" was me being sarcastic :)
As a non-woodworker, I love your designs, your build videos, and your narration. Makes me feel part of something beautiful!
I really love what you do man. I just stumbled on your page after look for relaxing woodworking videos, and I really liked your personality and humor you put into your voiceovers. Keep up the good work!
Awesome, thank you! Glad you found me and enjoy :)
Haters gonna hate, no matter what. I love the running dialog, and how the woodworking flows along and it's like you look up and realize "Oh, I should explain this bit." Humans are story tellers, so just building a beautiful coffee table is great, but getting the story behind the build, in the makers own words, is next level. I've seen a lot of paintings where I wish I had a clue what the artist was thinking. Thanks again for another great video!
Appreciate that...and thank you so much for watching :)
For the record I hate videos without commentary. So I will continue to watch your main channel with all the talking. As a fellow woodworker I want to hear the process and explanation of what’s going on so I can learn and improve.
Just beautiful! I can't wait for the plans to totally mess the project up! Thank you so much for the opportunity to get them, Chris. Keep up the great work!
This was the first video I have ever clicked on that had no views. That means, I could have been the first view... and as the self proclaimed first viewer. I can with all honesty say, that I watch your videos to listen to you talk. Have gotten so much inspiration from your videos. You are humble and true to yourself. Keep at it.
Thanks man...appreciate it. I think the video says 0 views for a while. The view count always lags behind a bit.
ive never really watched any wood working channels, but your narration got me to stick around, honestly. your scripts are very well written, and your voice is super calming and pleasant to listen to, especially after a rough day. keep up the great work!
Wow, thanks! I really appreciate that :)
Dude, the commentary throughout your videos is why I recently started following the channel. 🤘 I dig it and the beautiful art.
I also really enjoy your calm and informative narrative. However, I really love your design, your pieces are so simple, the lines work so well and they are so balanced. Absolutely inspiring.
I personally love the voice over, I want to know the process and the things you learned while making. It's super interesting!
Having said that I'm also a massive fan of woodworking videos that have the ASMR vibe. You're hitting both demographics now you genius!
Definitely a phenomenal teacher! I am a beginner and this is the first video I've seen that wasn't someone goofing off or sounding too pretentious. You teach it like it is and I really appreciate that!
I find your videos so chill and it is nice to hear you explain the project, the design process and the issues along the way, and how you solve them. Also I absolutely agree with you about what you said about yourself, you are definitely a good designer, and the simplicity, and the time you take to finish your designs is what makes them stand out, on youtube, at least for me! I have been watching woodworking content for maybe 2 or 3 years, but I have never touched a single woodworking tool! I am planning on starting this year, and while I want to focus on hand tools, I still find value in your videos
Keep kicking ass! You and Shaun are two of my favorites out there!
I love your work and the voice overs. You have inspired me to design more modern pieces. Keep up the great work!
AND the voice overs hahaha
Love your work brother, it's creators like you that have given me years of knowledge that has turned my side hustle/hobby into a full fledge business. Thank you!
I love the commentary. It helps me to realize that all levels of wood working competency have challenges. I appreciate the honesty
So your narration makes a real difference and add to your immense design skills, your designs are always so refined, never to less, never to much! Absolutely unique in my opinion
As someone who does video voiceover, I can tell you that yours is excellent! Great script, great tempo and style ... improves the video. Anyone else can just turn down the volume, for pete's sake!
I'm just a casual fan of watching talented people make things (i.e. not a woodworker myself), but yours is one of my favorite woodworking channels because of your often snarky commentaries. I love it. Please never change.
Your commentary is part of what I love most about your videos. It was what made me first subscribe years and years ago. Because your videos were not only about making beautiful furniture, but also because you’re so thoughtful (and often quite funny).
From one designer to another, your work and videos are very enjoyable to watch and listen to. I would also go as far as saying that it’s inspiring because your work helps others be more creative. Keep doing you.
Wow, thank you! Really appreciate that :)
You never disappoint, your designs are really fantastic, the woodworking a pleasure to see and the finishing is sublime! I do also really enjoy your narration, it adds context to the films and learning of your thought processes 👏👍😀
Thank you very much!
just wanted to say i appreciate the voice overs all the talking actually makes a difference, that being said might turn on the one without as some background ambiance lol
I gotta say, I super love the way you talk about your project and take us through the journey.
I'm not a particularly good woodworker myself, but I always feel kind of involved and less intimidated by your craftsmanship.
Like you said, if you just watch someone build something beautiful they just seem like they know everything, but you talk about your mistakes, your worries and such, that it really becomes very personal and mirrors my thoughts I have in my projects all the time...
I love to hear your commentary on the build because you're so knowledgeable and a great teacher! but, as someone who doesn't woodwork and stumbled across these videos as relaxing background during work, I'm also so excited that you're doing a channel of no talking videos for me to zone out to 😂
Thanks! I think the other channel will definitely be nicer for background noise. But hope you can continue to enjoy both for different reasons :)
@@Foureyes.Furniture absolutely!
Wow. I'm really looking forward to these plans. I so wanted to do one of your builds but never had the extra money or time to fork out for it. I think the learning part of it is more what I'm wanting then anything. But yeah. Highly anticipating this.
What he said!
I've been watching your channel for years, and the voice over is one of the best things about your videos. I'm a new woodworker so hearing you talk through your thought process and why something will or won't work is invaluable knowledge. And you have a nice voice. Keep it up, good sir. And thanks.
You have swiftly become my go-to woodworking channel. And don't stop talking - your explanations are why your channel is so good! Excited to build this project. Thankyou
Haha! I like the talking. I also like the sound of tools... so I'll see about giving both channels a watch... or maybe watch the one where you talk, and listen to the other in the background so I can imagine I'm in the woodshop doing my desk job while you build furniture. HA.
...and I'll appreciate racking up the views for 8 hours a day M-F as that background noise :)
@@Foureyes.Furniture happy to give the views. Especially as it’s a very low effort way to support what you provide through your videos.
I have aspergers (autistic spectrum) I love listening to you, no wasted dialogue talking about things that are irrelevant. Given your talent I would say you are on the spectrum, super high functioning and willing to share your entire knowledge catalogue for nothing. No offense meant if you aren’t, but we tend to recognize the trait in each other.
If it's a spectrum...I guess we're all on it somewhere right? JK. Appreicate the support...and I think most people like the talking. It's just an (ironically) vocal minority.
@@Foureyes.Furnitureusing the term spectrum is a way of describing everyone, however the spectrum is a polite way of describing those of us that aren’t neurotypical. I only discovered this when I was 45, nothing changed it just helped me understand why I thought differently from others.
Anyway, I love your furniture, love the videos, incredible content.
Hi, I like to weigh in on this, I've Asperger's as well. The philosophical musings of our friend show to me he embraces the atypical. In that he has an overlap with what is reckognized by most as autistic behaviour. Also the monomanical pursuit of these project could define autistic behaviour, but, our woordworking friend shows also a lot of non-autistic trades. But where the atypical overlap shows? Mainly in the musings? Yeah... it's almost asmr! So, a relaxing bonus on top of the nice projects. Still... having said all this, can we have a non-slab project, the next time? A chair maybe?
And the autism spectrum is limited. There's a bottom limit. So, most people are NOT on it! (which gives it a nice sheen of exclusiveness. 😁)
I find it really interesting that there is something inherent to these videos that appeals to those of us that are atypical. I have ADHD and ASD and there is nothing better for me to work to than Chris presenting a Four Eyes video. Other woodworking videos with similar presentation help as well, but they haven't managed to get the self deprecating humor down as well as Chris and don't feature any where near enough AJ1 styled push blocks!
Your talking is simply one of the reasons that this channel is so great! It’s the reason that I started watching and the reason why I still do. Keep it up!
For what it's worth, I appreciate the talking. The self-deprecating humor, explanations of what is happening (or just happened), and details are great. I also absolutely love videos where it's just the sound of woodworking, and there are many channels for that, and now 1 more thanks to you. I kinda wish those other channels would do this too and make a talking version to explain what's going on. I'm sure it's twice the work to keep both running, but thanks for doing it.
Really appreciate all of the work you put into your pieces, the videos, and all of the details you add into the videos. I appreciate the talking and listening to how you work through your process. Thank you and keep up the great work.
I appreciate that you appreciate it :)
It's definitely a lot of work...but I figure, they'll be around forever, so...
You're one of the best teachers I've ever encountered! Don't change a thing, love your style
Wow, thank you!
I’m new to woodworking, as in building something furniture-like. I like videos where someone is talking through the process - it helps me absorb more of the lesson and the mild humor is entertaining. This coffee table looks like a good place to start getting beyond boxes and simple open shop cabinets. Thanks!
I know nothing about woodwork, and hearing you talk is basically the reason I'm subscribed to your channel. Also your voiceover are really well written with a good sense of humour, so I really enjoy them a lot!!
sometimes i wish i could just give a like twice for the amount quality and effort these videos must take. just like a double like.
and i dont know if you and Shaun get this a lot, but your jokes are actually pretty funny, not that there were too many in this video, but just saying, you dont need to stop with the jokes.
oh, and i cant wait for your mechanical pencil, it really does look awesome
Thanks...a few people tell us. But more people probably just think we're lame :)
@@Foureyes.Furniture in one of your videos, im not sure which one, but apparently you said that people dont usually reply to your replies, but i quite like that you actually reply to comments like mine, it also makes me happy to know that you wrote this specifically to me, but thx for replying
Well, those people would be wrong. In my opinion. Anyways, people don’t tend to like or subscribe or support on patreon because they don’t like what a creator is doing. Rather the opposite, actually. I love your humor, and every comment I‘ve read so far here said about the same thing. You‘ll always find haters under every video of every big creator, no matter what kind of content you make. What’s important is that for you, the amount of people who love your stuff is disproportionately greater than the amount of haters.
I‘m not against taking criticism to heart, that’s a good thing. But if they’re rude and hateful about it, they don’t deserve your attention. And if they want you to change anything, they can say that in a nice way.
I like the talk. The detail is great and you have a calming tone. I almost always click away from woodworking videos that don’t have narration.
Hi, I’ve been watching your videos for a few years now. I absolutely adore the mid century aesthetic, so your designs really appeal to me. I just wanted to say that I don’t mind you talking and explaining your process at all. If I wanted woodworking ASMR I would look it up, but as a beginner I need people who explain as much as possible so that I can understand what the heck is going on. So thank you for all the time, effort and information that you put into your projects. And congrats on the new channel as well!
I love this channel because of the quiet monotone smooth voice, there’s no big LALALA fake happiness or making small mistakes catastrophic. It’s easy listening and well produced videos. Keep up the good work ❤
Dude, the narration in your videos is one of the things I enjoy about your channel! It’s a really nice way to be able to follow along throughout the build, plus, I’m a sucker for dry humor. Keep up the great work! 👍👍
I will have to disagree! My jaw did drop. What a beautiful piece ! God bless
Your personality is one of the things I like about this channel. I have the feeling that you guys are introverts like myself. I have the feeling you are quiet and reserved until you are talking about something you have passion for, like myself. Keep up the good work!
I learn best by listening to your commentary, please don’t stop! You are a great teacher BTW, I was in an industrial accident and ended up with a TBI, after 50 years as a craftsman I find myself learning all over again many great new skills… so awesome!!!
I find you voice relaxing. Also when one vocalizes their thoughts, especially the whys to do or not do something, you are using a proven teaching technique. As a retired art teacher, I know this. So I love you voice over videos. Without your teaching I would miss a lot. So thank you for continuing to speak!
Love the project! And please - do not stop talking and explaining what you’re doing. This is priceless!
Love this book! czcams.com/users/postUgkxpCNxqmAkyjN6NPx1fyB7QiEFWyO5mUWL it is simply one-of-a-kind! I really love it, because karah explained all tools required to have the job done, not mentioning the fabulous diy pallets ideas. I'm pretty sure this will be a fresh start in my new endeavour. Amazon was great, they delivered on time. Thank you!
I don’t have the first idea of woodworking, but I love learning about how the things I use in my everyday life are created. I could just watch your videos without you talking, but honestly, if I want saw sounds, I‘ll just buy a tiny piece of cheap wood and saw it up myself. I got a saw.
What I‘m here for is learning about the process, and as you said, you’re great at teaching. Without your voice to explain why on earth you’re cutting this piece the way you do and not a different way, I wouldn’t have a clue what’s going on. I love your explanations, please keep up the good work.
I do like the talking, the jokes, the honesty and personality you bring to CZcams. I also love your designs and learn a lot. Thanks for putting these videos up and not changing because of a few rude people who love criticising and being nasty.
I have to echo all the other comments regarding your voice overs, Chris. You are an amazing teacher. You use the perfect mix of humor, clear explanation, and great examples. Thank you!
Bringing it back to the old school four eyes style with the narrative intertwined throughout and the catchy payoff at the end. Seen this in the last few vids. Love it. Also love how he’s doing so much promoting of various products throughout, yet it’s genuine.
I have nearly finished building this coffee table and what a brilliant set of plans and video instruction. Just got to sand it now and put the finishing coats on. I have been so inspired by this course, I have bought the Pico Console Table course now and I am so looking forward to reading and watching all the videos before my next adventure. Foureyes you are a inspiration and highly recommended
As a brand new woodworker (wanna be woodworker!) one of the first things I want to build is a coffee table for our house. I can't wait for your plans to come out. This table is simple, yet gorgeous! Thanks for preparing to release this.
Just want to say thank you both for everything you do. The plans are incredible.
Four eyes tragic here. Mate easily the best designer on You tube and keep talking I enjoy the dry wit. Peter From Sydney Australia
Love you. Do not change anything about you. Finally, thank you. You are the gift, and the projects a bonus.
I love when you explain what you are doing. That's how I learn why you do the things you do!
Thanks dude! For the plan, the video, the voice-over and the subtle humor. Keep rock'n it!
Turning something negative into a positive is a powerful idea and I appreciate how you pulled that off with the desk into table but also with the comments/criticisms from viewers about your narration. That mindset would really help me in my life right now so, in some way, your commentary is encouraging me to use that to adapt to my struggles. So, thanks and great work as always.
I LIKE TO HEAR YOU TALK WHILE YOU WORK. IVE BEEN WITH YOU FROM THE BEGINNG. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND TALK AWAY!
Your dialog is soothingly pleasant. I love you and your videos. You have grown your channel while keeping yourself grounded. Your voice and videos are as warm as Watching Norm on a 33 inch tube TV while laying on the floor on a Sunday afternoon in the mid 80s. Thank you
I like your talking… you have a great sense of humor and a fun personality. And your workmanship is top notch!
I hope you keep talking! I enjoy your sense of humor, and you are great at explaining your processes.
You also have an enjoyable speaking voice, or good sound mixing equipment.
This is an AMAZING coffee table - don't get that twisted
And
Keep talking. For us learners it's not only helpful it's motivational because you're human
You make watchers and listeners feel "don't worry you can do this too. Chris and Shaun will help you"
Peace
Don't stop the commentary! I only discovered your channel last week. I've been interested in woodworking for decades but have more modern design tastes. Your videos are the first to give me confidence that I can design and build furniture for my own home. Over the weekend I watched your Sketchup tutorial videos and am mostly done designing my first piece, adjustable shelving units for our board game collection. Given the budget it won't be the most beautiful item but it will be functional, solve a problem, and won't be ugly. Thank you and keep the commentary flowing!
P.S. You're correct; you excel at teaching!
I only learn more about woodworking because of your comments and insightful wisdom so please continue with these awesome voice over!
I enjoy the talking. We share the self deprecating style of teaching so it resonates with me. Thanks for giving up your time to make a free plan. I'm going to give it a go and if I manage to pull it off with my very mediocre skill set I'll maybe buy some more plans!
Sitting here, one earplug in. Listening to you for the first time, forgetting I’m watching something. For the first time.
Also, the piece turned out bonkers. More of it all.
After watching a good portion of your videos, I have to agree that you are a great teacher. Keep up the good work. Oh, and keep talking. It is engaging.
One of the classiest woodworking CZcamsrs from the americas, really beautiful pieces. Could be Japanese could be scandi, absolute class!
I’m a super fan! I absolutely love you videos, and they wouldn’t be the same without your chat! Never stop talking!!
New fan here. I love your content with the commentary, the design process and implementation documentation. I also appreciate the inclusion of Big John and his wood knowledge. I know it must be a lot of work to produce videos along with working on your projects, so thanks for sharing. CZcams has a lot of content creators. I prefer your method and you have a calm vibe. Those who don't like the way you do things can find someone else to watch or can simply mute. Keep on with your impressive work!
Really appreciate your honest approach to videos and your solid content.
Lining up the top of the legs against the fence , then cutting the bottom of the legs on the table saw was a neat trick to get a clean and accurate cut,
Another vote for narration, there are plenty of other CZcams videos with only the presenters hands in shot and no words at all!.
Thanks...yeah, anytime I can cut an assembly like that...I go for it. Gotta be careful though, sometimes those cuts can get a little sketchy
This long form is my favorite. Talk all you want man.
Excellent project. Stop worrying about what others say, focus on your craft.
I "watch" your videos as I work, so your narration is actually really great for me... I know when to glance over when something cool is going down. Love your vids - thanks for the hard work
Great videos. Love your honest opinions and self-awareness. Don't stop anything you're doing, the recipe works!
I love all your pieces and wanted to thank you for making this table plan free. I may never have the time to actually build it but the thought is lovely.
About the talking. Yes at times it seems a bit much but honestly you are teaching in these videos and unless someone already knows what they are going the dialogue is now we learn
As a woodworker, this is my number one channel for woodworking by a far margin. Period. Thanks guys.
It is your commentary that has kept me watching. Informative and almost stand up.
Dude I love your concept of building…. Simple and elegant. Literally my favorite style of anything related to building
