- This is my unboxing video of my Oswald Guitars custom "Mike McCready 1960" Heavy Relic Stratocaster. This video has been 8 months in the making and I'm incredibly excited to be able to finally share it with you!
I also play through a load of Mike McCready guitar riffs so you can hear how awesome it sounds, give you some sexy G.A.S. inducing close up shots and explain the extra features this has under the hood!
Note that this wasn't inspired by the recent Fender Mike McCready Limited Edition 1960 Stratocaster that their custom shop put out, I just asked Nick (Oswald Guitars) to build me a custom strat and to have the heavy relic that I love on Mike's guitar. Enjoy!

It’s amazing to see your excitement with that. Glad you’re happy! I also have a Brazilian handmade sunburst strat with a mini toggle replacing the neck tone pot that does the same tele-ness thing, and I love it!

Amazing, Mike was one of the guys who inspired me the most with rock and psychedelic guitar, along with SRV and Hendrix, but unfortunately it's so hard to find material about him. Coincidentally yesterday I started to study a little about guitar customization and found out what it is and how to relicate a guitar. Today you surprise me with this video! Thanks.

I have a John Frusciante inspired 60's Tele built by Nick and its honestly just the most beautiful thing. I also had a gorgeous jag of his that I was forced to sell and it was heartbreaking.

Nick’s prices are incredibly good value for the work he does imo and the reinforced gig bags are excellent quality - similar price to a hiscox hard case.

I'd love to see you give a tour of your studio, particularly your guitar collection. I'm in the states stewing in jealousy, and a pile of really nice budget guutars. I almost wish you wouldn't use that powder blue Suhr for any more lessons because I find myself distracted by its gloriousness.

What a gem of a channel i have just found in yours 👍.
I received my Oswald custom last year. Like you i built it off things i loved from other guitars. Im almost a year in with it and it’s absolutely amazing. Im still learning about its optimum setup but im think im quite comfortably there now.
How has journey been with it since you’ve had a few months to gel with. Does it really compete with your other guitars from house hold names? Perhaps its a step ahead since you blended all the bits from your others.
I’m looking forward to chewing through your content, it looks like there’s some cracking stuff on your channel.

ah thanks mate and good to hear from a fellow Oswald club member haha! Yea it absolutely competes with the household names, but it's even more special as I know it was built entirely by Nick, with my custom specs. Literally used it in a video i released today. I'd never sell it basically :-)

Awesome guitar!! I’m curious about the blocking system of the bridge. How works exactly? Can you do it on the way in a live situation?
cheers! it's called Tremol-no. Really easy to use and yes you can lock it and unlock it easily enough when playing live but you just need access to the rear cavity (ie leave the plate off)

I ordered it about 8 months ago, way before Fender announced their Mike 1960 custom shop version, so I didn’t actually get this based on seeing that one, I’ve wanted one for a while and was also after a Strat that played like my PRS so this is the best of both worlds! Speak to Nick oswaldguitars.nl if you’re after a custom guitar tho, I’d highly recommend his work!

Basically i asked for a strat that plays like my PRS, with a Mike McCready relic job, but a pull pot to engage the bridge pickup so i can get tele tones too! Specs are - Alder Body, Maple Neck, Rosewood board, dual action truss, 25" scale length, 10" radius, PRS Custom 24 neck shape, 6150 jescar frets, bone nut, mint green 3 ply pickguard, glow in the dark side dots, Kluson trem with tremol-no, gotoh vintage tuners, Oswald '62 custom wound pickups, 1V, 1T-250k CTS pots!

I'm considering a strat with prs neck! You already did it. How is it in terms of tone and playability? Does scale length affect on tone? Maybe can we see kind of one year review?
haha it's amazing mate (I mean it's perfect for me anyway). I still play this one most days and it's my go to strat. Great tones, feels awesome and looks cool. I'm selling my AVRI as i literally haven't used it for about a year now.

I've spent the last 2 years basically building the same guitar as best I can, with the budget I've got. I'm about to retire in 2 weeks and while I'd love to own one myself, I won't play it enough to justify it.

Those are expensive.
The Fender ones? Yes for sure! The Oswald custom ones aren't cheap but they're amazing value for the quality of guitar you get. Basically like getting a custom shop strat for the price of a US standard fender :-)

Cheers Martin but I won’t be selling it mate 😂 It’s the same with any custom built guitar in terms of second hand prices, but a custom shop Strat would have been at least double the price. I’d genuinely rather have two from Nick Oswald tbh 🤘😀
I like the guitar, but not the relic'ing. You have to do that yourself. Plus the headstock looks new, while the body looks totally ragged out. It is not a believable relic, and it is too over relic'd for me. I guess there is a place for a guitar like this, but not for me. I do like the Oswald guitars a lot. I saw a guy on another channel with one, and he sounded great, and some of that was the guitar.
Body reliccing is good , back of neck isnt !!! looks like a Nash , belt sanded .....Find a 62 original and see the difference ...
to be fair i didn't ask for the back of the neck to be relic'd, i think that's Nick's standard neck finish on these types and it feels superb :-)

yup! they're super high quality, I much prefer them for gigging than lugging a bunch of bulky/heavy cases around. I think the bags are about £170 in the UK so I was well chuffed Nick's guitars come with these :-)
