  • For the past couple of months I have been out on the mudflats photographing the arrival of the endangered Eastern Curlew with the OM System OM-1.
The warmer months in the Southern Hemisphere means that they spend most of their time in their favourite feeding grounds. Birds such as the Bar-Tailed Godwit and the critically endangered Eastern Curlew gorge themselves here, getting nice and plump so they can make the return trip to their breeding grounds in the Northern Hemisphere. These amazing birds fly 11,000km (or 6800 miles) non-stop during their annual migrations.
However, one of their main feeding grounds on the East Coast of Australia called Toondah Harbour, is under threat from a luxury apartment development. If this development goes ahead all of these birds will very likely go extinct.

To photograph these birds I used two cameras: the OM System OM-1 and the Panasonic S5. I pushed the S5 to it's limit here and it handled it... ok-ish.
    For lenses:
    On the OM-1 I used the Olympus 100-400 f/5-6.3.
    On the S5 the Sigma 150-600 f/5-6.3.
Both were using their appropriate 1.4x teleconverters.

This has become a passion project for me over the past few months and I've thoroughly enjoyed watching these birds arrive right outside my front door.

    Thanks for watching!

great film.... cant believe its going to be destroyed by greed ...surely the mangroves would be an asset for any development adding to its appeal

Thanks. You would think so, but they ruin the ocean view for the apartments 🙄

Thanks! I like the Panasonic S5, but currently I love the Nikon Z9. Hard to beat that one
