- Today I will be doing some Pre Release Capture with the Nikon Z8. Pre Release Capture is an easy and fantastic way to capture action, after the fact.
In this video I will show you how to setup your Nikon Z8 and Z9 for pre release capture, and then jump out into the field to capture some birds in flight.

Gutter nests also common here in Florida with the notorious Carolina Wren with tragic consequences. Also in vehicle engine compartments if parked too long in the spring. Z8 on my wish list, will come back to this video when I get one.
Wow, never heard of birds nesting in engine compartments. Probably quite cozy and safe I guess.

Great video boss straightforward explanation. But I already have far to many shots to wade through at 9 fps. I also recon I could and do get these shots with a prehistoric 850. But my images will of course be raw and at least of equal quality (some say better). The method I use is two eyes open. So the shot is set up and I then go to live view silent mode. Then I use a trigger release and a good old saying from my army days "watch and shoot" Yes on occasions I miss the first shot but hey we have to have something to come back for next time. If I set it to mode 2 I can get 30 fps jpeg! I guess the advantage of the Z9 and 8 is the focusing?
Cheers! Advantage of the Z8/9 is the focus and no blackout of the viewfinder when shooting at high speeds. But in the end it’s whatever works and lets you get the shot, even if it’s with “vintage” tech!
@@Blinsaff You are absolutely spot on, and sooner or later I will take the plunge and get the Z9 just for the focus system.
Combine that with auto capture and you could just take a nap while it makes great shots :)

Was this done with Version 2 of Z8? Btw, what the JGP file size of pre capture? Thanks
This was done with the 1.01 firmware (shot in December last year). Average jpg size for the pre capture shots is around 2.5 MB
If one uses back button focus will this still work?

I didn't realize pre-release doesn't work with RAW :(
Yeah it’s kind of a bummer. Hopefully firmware can fix it
