While Ilya and Matt are busy on other projects the smiths at Bellorphon Studios for both of Eivor's Viking Axes and show us two very different techniques of how to forge them. Everything from punching and drifting to doing the fold over and forge weld and how to etch patterns on to steel. This video has everything you would ever need to learn how to make axes from a the video game Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

"...Helps to cancel out the noise from the grinder, the power hammer, and from Ilya." I just choked on the beer I was drinking! LMFAO!!!
Me too, almost spit it out all over myself.
I was just clicking the Like button, and I toppled my laptop when I heard that line -- and nearly spit my tea.
Immediately looked for this comment when i heard that line.
Truth!
i spilled my coffee after hearing that
What can I say? As a tradesman, I adore watching a craftsman make something from nothing. Please continue doing what you do. My only request is more history/cultural lessons and to continue explanations of why you're doing what you're doing.
This guy though? This guy is good.
Those axes are awesome. The guy who forged them did an incredible job and his eye for detail is top notch. Any viking or dwarf (Gimli) would be proud to weild those bad boys in battle.
Unusable axes tho. Far too big and heavy, you die in battle with this without even knocking someone.
Since Way of Kings was brought up. Kaladin's Shard Spear, Dalinar's Blade, or Adolins Plate/Blade (had to throw plate in somewhere)
Now there is a good idea !
@@ThatWorks bonus points if you make Kaladin's spear from Syl... :)
Oh hell yeah
@@ThatWorks Yes!!!!
Dude, spoilers.Spear doesn't show up until the next book. For a Way of Kings build i think Szet' blade would be more fitting, it's not as gigantic as other swords and yet just as important in the story.
Love the glitch effect peppered through out the video! Its a nice call back to the first Assassin's Creed game, it makes me nostalgic lol.
"And *my* axe." ~Gimli, probably.
:D I think he would like these ! More Dwarvin than Viking by design IMHO
@@Thomas.Wright That would be correct👌🎸
@@ThatWorks The work y'all do is amazing!
"Dude, put down the axe." ~Jack Black
@@garorobe Classic video
I appreciate that they went through the effort to cap the top of the axe.
I have to say, the quality of the video produced grow a lot since the start of the channel. Lightning, framing, editing, Matt improves himself greatly and has nothing to be ashamed of other youtube videos! And as always another amazing build. This channel deserve all the sub it has, and way more!
Thanks to Bellerophon Studio for teaming up with us on this one! Make sure you let them know you appreciate them by dropping them a sub too! czcams.com/channels/DXcYzNVW8haOOPMWyqOzyA.html . What do you all want to see made next? Go to www.Audible.com/thatworks or text 'thatworks' to 500 500 to get your free 30 day trial
Can you do a Total Warhammer build?
I subbed as soon as I heard about the channel
Can you please do shays bastard sword from assassins creed rogue you never did one from that game and heartsbane from game of thrones the show version not the one Valyrian steel is selling
Please make a darksaber from the Mandalorian series
.
I am looking forward to you 2 doing a collaborative project together. I can see it now, Bellerophon receives a package, inside is some Bloom steel, and Ilya.
yes i am subscribed, and for those people that think that these videos are useless i was planning on using this design for my axe in a middle medieval renaissance age fest
there you go!
Im glad u guys are continuing to make outstandingly Quality builds on ur own away from the constraints of another company bc seeing the standards of these vs the builds of ur past home channel is Really Something
Since you mentioned The Way of Kings... I'd love to see Oathbringer, or Adolin's Shardblades :D or Kaladin's Sylblade/Sylspear
That could happen! stay tuned! Let me finish the books first!
@@ThatWorks matt enjoy. As you get to the most recent book you will want to expand out into some of his other books as they are all connected as part of his “cosmere”. The mistborn books and the book war breaker are important to really flesh out the universe he’s built over the years and have references in the most recent stormlight archive book. The narrators Michael Kramer and Kate Reading do a great job
Sylspear! Sylspear! Orrrr..... Nightblood?
@@ThatWorks I would love to see That Works interpretation of the oathblades. Rereading the entire series, it is unbelievably awesome and epic, I hope you will enjoy it :) And might I add, every Brandon Sanderson's book is worth a read (in my humble opinion).
@@ThatWorkshey matt, I was wondering where I could find the vinyl stencil maker
Would be kinda cool to know the final weight of builds like this.
i think way too heavy to doublewield
@@emperadorromano567 maybe yes, maybe no. Is why it would be cool to know the weight.
Estimate per axe 8-12 kg. Which is quite light during eivor era.
@@sbhack2077 sorry, but no. 8 kilograms is way too much for any weapon. Doublehanded axes would weight at top 3 kilograms, and that's already a lot.
@@sbhack2077 lol, a normal viking axe weight about 800g. In comparison some of the biggest a Zweihänder weight around 2-3 kg and they would 1.4-2.1m in length. You are almost talking about a Guts raider sword from berserk level of weight.
I usually watch this channel just for Ilya and his ridiculous attention to detail but it's cool that you guys host other smaller channels that do good work too.
There is a level of roughness to the result that adds authenticity to this build. A hard balance to achieve. Beautiful work.
right? I agree.
I like all the fittings they use with their power hammer.
These are so incredible, especially with those engravings! True masters!
i hope u make one of Zoro's swords in one piece
I hope they make all 3
spectacular work
The Bellerophon guys are awesome. It's really cool that you shout them out.
yea man! It's been great working with them!
@@ThatWorks I bet the big guy could bench press a Yugo. He's huge...
Love ACV, and watching the very talented blacksmith was very enjoyable.
I would love to see you guys build The Green Dragon Crescent Blade, Guan Yu's weapon. We have seen alot of swords and axes, maces and daggers, but not that many, if any, guandao.
Michaelcthulhu built it check his CZcams chan
More great stuff from these guys, that's why I keep coming back
Really incredible work!
Excellent work
Great build !
My gods, those things are beautiful. Amazing work.
They do some amazing work
They really do! what is your fav thing that they have made.
Please, make the viking hidden blade! It's got some intricate details for Ilya to engrave and Matt could do a uniqe damascus for the blade
I agree!! Then Matt should give it to his wife who is a die hard AC fan! Lol
@@CannonDollX Everybody wins! Please, push your man a little :D
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting on the Forged in Fire video with Ilya. I was wondering what you guys were up to and so glad you're doing well.
beautiful axes
Great work Alecsiy
Love you're guys show. Keep doing what you're doing!!! Thanks
My favorite weapon is the Nunchaku and I want to see some make some like never before. I love watching you guys work and I know you have the skills to completely revolutionize the Nunchaku and make them in to a new and advanced functioning work of art.
Awesome axes and content! Thanks for sharing!
You are a outstanding bladesmith. Let's say thank you to youtube that thanks to it 😘😁👍 I hope someday I will be as good as you 😍🔨
✔✔✔
don't worry, you're good 😎
Cant wait to see some of your work!
@That Works - You guys should do a collab with Alec Steele or Will Stelter. Awsome craftsmanship on those axes!
You guys are the best... alway amazing works...
Great work everyone!
Soundtrack slaps as always.
:D
that is an amazing pair of axes i really like the handle in the folded axe the cap at the bottom of the handle is awesome
Another beautiful build, guys! Sharing on The Awesomer.
Skrillex stile music, NICE!
This is amazing
Wow. Amazing art. So beautiful.
Yea they did a great job. Which Axe was your favorite though if you had to pick one ?
You know what I really like about your channel? You promote other smiths as well who are also really talented.
Great video and prolly one of the best book series I have read to date
Spectacular!
the cinematography and editing on this is of the same high quality of the axes themselves and I like it :D
Truly the best music you have selected for a video so far.... Good job.
Thank you! Music selection is one of the toughest things in an edit. it can make or break your whole project.
Well, you nailed it. Have a link to that music?
Everyone should get a montage of them at work while triumphant music plays. I bet this dude feels like a boss and he damg well should!
Wow! Amazing work.
Yea they did a great job
Beautifully done! I'm a huge Assassin's Creed fan and haven't played Valhalla yet, I'm an OTR truck driver and can only play Xbox at home, and I'm playing through all games in order of release before I touch Valhalla.
Love these videos
Y'all do so much work for these gorgeous builds. I hope the finances are there to back up the passion and time that goes into each of these incredible peices.
Liked, subscribed, commented fit the algorithm.
It's so cool that you guys do both historical and fictional weapons. My suggestion for a historical one is Kusanagi no Tsurugi just to hear Ilya talk about it.
I was wondering were you went, im happy I found you again to watch
Congrats on half a million subscribers! Well deserved. Keep up the great work please.
Both the axes are very well done. Amazing team. Well done Alexi and team
yea they did a great job!
Amazing
Dope build, and yea I rate Audible, listen every day.
grats on 500k guys!!
Thank you!
Would also love to see yall remake the custom gauntlet.
An excellent job, congratulations.
ty ty
excellent work really I enjoy watching the whole process of making it these beautiful art 😍
Idea: make a series on proper forging techniques, and the proper tools, like hammers, and anvils, and how to prepare to forge properly.
I seriously want to do this one day!
It has almost been a year, but I come back to rewatch the awesomeness.
So cool!!
that handle making table saw jig is pretty cool
Right? Simple and effective
Amazing , was expecting for a video about eivor’s axes. New subscriber :)
Love the Stormlight Archive drop during the audible commercial. if you get into it, you should totally make one of the shardblades.
I may have to do that !
Truly magnificent gentleman keep up the great work.
Great video! Must have been a nightmare to edit but you made it all come together seamlessly.
That Works: **amazing fucking content**
Awe Me/Man at Arms: "Fucken uuuuh... big triangle."
no comment! But thanks !
lmao true their hollow knight build was disappointing. looked like sheet metal soldered to a handle.
That was an underwhelming build lol but on Man at Arms' defense, the fans requested for that simple triangle nothing much to add actually but they've said that it's not the final product yet since they'll do some engraving on the thing soon.
If it wasn't obvious enough, your comment was pretty fucking disrespectful, considering Matt and Ilya used to be a part of MaA.
@@TheSteam02 yes they used to be and when they were the builds that MaA put out was amazing since they have left however...... well its just gone to shit to be frank
Interesting etching, You guys should do an elaboration on stencil work with markers. Makes me want to try this with the simple tools before investing in the good stuff.
Beautiful axes guys!!!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
That's some gorgeous tools he's got there
Leigh Roe right? I love seeing how other people go about do similar thing in much different ways
Such impressive work and without all the expensive machinery. I bow my invisible cap to you sir
As a support for the channel of Matt and Ilya, I will watch this video again, but now in English))
Сергей Устинов thank you!
I would love to see you guys build the Scimitar from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
The Forged in Fire episode was DOPE! Ilya went beast mode! When is Matt gonna try his hand on the show?! Keep it up!
Axes Gunnar himself would be proud of, they're amazing
Not sure what is more impressive, the build or Matt’s beard
for the sake of craftsmanship lets go with the build ya ?
I didn't get a notification for this build. Still, great build!👍
Dude There BADASS it’s definitely difficult to pick my favourite of the two keep up the good work guys ✌️💚🤘
Thank you and we will!
Thank you guys for the response that’s cool as hell, I absolutely love what you guys do It is truly awesome , I know you guys are busy as hell making some truly awesome cool shit and these projects take a hell of long time to make but I always say you can’t rush greatness , but if could please make a request could you please please please make the reforged kings sword from Outlander it’s one of my favourite swords from a movie ,I think it’s because it’s a blend between an old Viking sword and the metal from the dudes spaceship I thought was a cool ass concept and it looks super badass 😂 take care guys in these pressing times and as always ✌️💚🤘
I love watching your guys vids and I would love to see you guys make a kriegsmesser.
17:55 GORGEOUS 😍
Could you if possible make the hidden blade used by Connor from Assassin's Creed 3? I know it is around 9 years late but I believe it is quite technical. It has a pivot for the blade. Essentially it is kind of a dual purpose blade.
A question can you please explain the etching process used here?
If you watch their original videos on Bellerophon Studios they explain it in great detail.
So nice! I haven´t played the game but no need in order to like this axes! On question tho, why we don´t have audio from the shop? I like to hear all the hammer and fire noises.
Amazing👍
I know that it would be really hard, but corvo's sword would be literally amazing, also a well made longinus spear would be cool af
Прекрасное сотрудничество с Bellerophon Studio)!!!
I've been wondering, is it easier to harden something like an axe head than a sword or dagger because there's more material and less chance of warping?
I was wondering what happened to the Ilya and Matt from Man at Arms, and it's nice to see they split off and still documenting their forging projects. The video production isn't the same quality but the projects are still awesome
If you end up enjoying The Way of Kings, definitely check out the rest of Brandon's books. All of the Cosmere books are good, but even his non-Cosmere books are good.
If you're not really into mideval-ish fantasy, I'd suggest the Reckoners series if super hero type stories are more your speed.
If something a little more..odd but also normal (yeah, doesn't sound like it makes sense, but it will) is more your thing, then check out his Legion series.
Loved this vid. A future suggestion: I haven’t seen a video for Arnie’s main sword from the original Conan the Barbarian. Could you please build that sword?
In the background is a balloon with the Russian word "СМЕСЬ" )))
You have a great Russian blacksmith!
loved the "axe throwing", it looks realistic
That Works make this list he is
Riku: Keyblade Way to Dawn (kingdom hearts 2)
Dai: Dai's Sword (Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken)
Haru Glory: Eisenmeteor (Rave Master)
if you can't make everyone on the list just do one or two on the list. I thank you very much I wish you much success and great achievements
The guy from Bellorphon made forging those axes look easy! Great work, I'll definitely check out that channel!
Thank you! They deserve it!
