Forging A Knight's Worst Nightmare - Rondel from [Dark and Darker]

  • Forging a rogues rondel dagger from Dark and Darker. This rondel is forged from low layer twisted damascus or pattern welded steel. Much like a Stiletto, the rondel is a more stout version of the spiked dagger . All of the hilt parts are forged as well. Matt even added a challenge by trying to forge the pommel from an old piece of rebar. We show how to spiral flute and wood handle for a dagger using nothing but files. There is blacksmithing and bladesmithing mixed with some carpentry wood working. This is a great DIY crafting video if you have any interest in making a rondel or any dagger.

I agree, Illya's contribution is missed and the quality of the builds is still there.
I can understand why Illya has stepped back though, being a Master Armourer and only ever being asked to produce blades doesn't help him grow in his craft. Where is the request for a scale mail suit of armour? Or plate mail? or even ring and chain mail? For a shield? Helmet?
With Illya being focused on all of those and never getting to actually build them by request it is understandable why he has stepped back to focus on them, sad he has not chosen to bring us along on his journey to explore his craft.

Rondel daggers didn't punch through armor - unless you mean mail. They were used to go between the gaps in plate armor - and they did so very effectively. No need to give the dagger a magical property it didn't possess.

@@ThatWorks why not 15n20? I mean I've never seen anyone make a mono 15n20 blade. I heard that 15n20 is not as hard as other high carbon steel. But people use it in making Damascus. So doesn't mixing 15n20 with other high carbon steel compromise the hardness of the cutting edge of a blade compared to plain high carbon steel?

@@mikchrungBLADES I've made kitchen knives and the like from 15n20. Carbon content is basically the same as 1080.

@@ThatWorks ok. Because I thought if 15n20 is corrosion and rust resistant, why don't people make knives from it, instead they always go for 10series steel.

Ok so the rondel dagger was a renaissance/late middle age weapon. Kind of makes me wonder why it didn't come out sooner?

Because there werent armors entirely covering head to toe in steel yet

The rondel paired best with a full mitten gauntlet often used by the armored knights known to carry these daggers to defeat ring mail, puncture visors and gaps, etc.
Matt Easton's channel Scholagladitoria has a great video on rondels, and so does Tod Cutler's channel, Tods Workshop. Tod actually males them and tests them in several videos

It wasn't blunt. You don't need a needle point for it work well. Trust me. It's quite scary as is.
