  • Ilya takes us through step by step of how he engraves a dragon on a custom damascus great sword. Engraving steel takes special steps. This is a series of videos showing engraving for beginners all the way to advanced as the videos progress.
First Ilya shows us the bloom steel katana that he made last year with a carved / engraved dragon horimono on the blade and a beautiful hamon.
Ilya breaks down each step as he works. Shows us how to generate an original sketch for engraving and how to transfer that sketch to the blade. He then shows us how he starts engraving the design on the blade and starts removing material.
We also go into detail showing the tools that he uses to engrave. Starting with the huge engravers ball that he made and how it works. He then shows the hammers that you will need and a few different styles of chisels themselves.

How much would cost, a sword like this, with this kind of engravings?

Knowing how much Ilya values philosophy and tradition of the arts, it's no wonder that his handwriting is beautiful. I began my interest in blacksmithing via calligraphy, and as he's stated in a few videos, the sword and the pen (or brush) are very similar in their artistic philosophy. I'm more familiar with it as it pertains to Eastern calligraphy, but I can easily see through his process how it translates to Western penmanship, the manuscript, and physical religious text. It's always a pleasure to see Ilya work and talk through his process in this way and see how several crafts intertwine.

  • @karmakshantivyapini4734

I'm always impressed by Ilya's erudition and use of tradition. But this video is exceptional both for the ease of which he moves from topic to topic and for the lack of strain when he gets to do it in an environment quieter than the usual forge. It's shaping up to be a very handsome piece.
I've remarked on this before, but I am satisfied to see that Matt's videography has so well represented the feeling of work in real time without making a literal record of real time. The tricks of the trade that make this possible are used by him understatedly and well, unlike the frequently strained and artificially glamorous work of Man at Arms; close-up to close-up to close-up relying on voiceover to give coherence to what is usually arbitrarily strung together eye-candy, which is then cut away abruptly to a different topic and different talent explaining things to a static camera. Real work in real time simply isn't like that. The actual artistic material of video is *time*, both how much real time the final edit takes to view, and how much illusory time is created by the camera and edit. I was particularly pleased by the hard cuts made at the moment the craftsman's motion is *almost* complete to a change in angle and the few moments later *after* the motion is completed, often with a self-referential explanation by the craftsman directly to the camera.
The best blacksmith videographer that I've seen on CZcams is Swedish blacksmith Tobjorn Ahman. Because he shoots with so little help from his audio track, he has to clearly represent processes mostly by camera and editing alone. I think Matt is very much creeping up on Ahman with every program.

If not, you should be. Your work is easily that quality. Keep up your fine craftsmanship!
