- Heat-treating a sword is very important, and can easily go very wrong. Here you see my first go at it.

No special lightsabre effects were used in this video. It actually looked like that in real life.

"was distractingly good looking, and I left it in too long"
I bet you did. I bet. you. did.
Bravo, sir.
And how did you . . . come . . . up with such splendor? :-D
A wink's as good as nudge to a blind man, know what I'm sayin?
But he broke it with the hammer.😱
"and when it came out it looked like a flipping sparkler"
I thought the blue glow to the sword meant that there were Orcs nearby?!
Lloyd is Elven - confirmed
It's Lindy - it glows beige when frog eaters are near . . .
seansbeckett If he is an Elf, does he paint his harp red or blue? 🤔
An orchestra was rehearsing next door. The sword got confused.
If he is Elven no wonder Raquel Skellington goes for him
Katie, destroyer of dreams.
And harbinger of mayhem . . .
My Katie was a Chloe.
Katie has robbed us of the 8th Wonder of the World.
Katies have been doing that since before the Dawn of Time .. .
Oskar Pyke AHAHAHA XD!
Seems like you have some deep unresolved issues with Katie...
turns out this whole sword smithing business was about her..
maybe they should talk
Talking is overrated he can just let his frustrations out by hammering the sword hes got now and making a better sword than he would of made back then. :P!
It would never have worked out between them, she was the reason he didn't have an epic, badass sword. And she thought it was funny!
Not true... I know some ugly katies.
Don't we all have our own unresolved issues with a Katie?
Damn you Katie!
Perhaps Lloyd should sword out his issues with Katie . . .
@@thomasraahauge5231 he should show her his long hard sword now
@@f.b.lagent1113 that would sword of work :)
Good to see the Brits are arming themselves.
HA HA, good point, get that sword finished just in time to turn it over to the mayor of London.
interesting fact about that, nothing in UK law precludes us from practising archery or running siege workshops, in fact it is positively encouraged!
gonecoastal4 XD!!!
Mikail Elchanovanich i do practice archery, though dutch law forbids siegeworks...
bet you're still allowed to build longships though you cheeky buggers.
There is a Katie Arnander on Facebook that has a certain Nicholas Lloyd as a friend
4:39 Wait wait wait wait wait... you're telling me that this entire time, you haven't had the *_plague?!_*
Well, you may as well have just bought a katana online for all the medievality of this blade you're making now!
That's my new favorite word for today: medievality, the amount of medievalness in something.
Medievalness: of, pertaining to, or pretending to have something to do with the Medieval Period.
You could make it an index ranging from 0 to 1. Had he had the plage, the medievality of this whole thing would have been 0.89. However, this outrageous revelation dropped it to 0.12. Equivalent to a butted chainmail bikini
plague builds character
Wait, Lloyd is not making a katana?
you can still get a dose of bubonic plague in Haiti I believe, something to do with digging up dead bodies.
Swords before broads Lindy...
Surely you mean wenches. And sorry for calling you Shirley.
broadsword...?
What if you have a broadsword?
Suppose one were to take a broad's blood and quench one's sword in said blood, would that make it a broadsword?
Failing that, you could always make a bastard sword, or from the sounds of the audio from 0:03 onward you could make a short or a long sword...
(This is an awful joke even for me, jesus christ.)
Good lord the Star Trek reference
Watching Tom catch the blade on his hammer a few times when it slid around was both worrying and impressive
anyone else count the seconds when the sword was passed to tom?
If you use the same tool long enough, it basically turns into an extension of your hand. It's probably just a reflex at this point.
You only try to catch a very hot sword with your hand once...
...If you're smart!😅

"Katie was distractingly good looking, and I left it in for too long."
Oh my god. How did I not notice that the first time?
It took me a while, too. Then I laughed my arse off :-D
Lindy made this sword to ride up to Katie on horseback and shouts
“HOW DO YOU LIKE MY SWORD NOW”
Better if he waits for is armor to be done.
Bob: If he ambushes her, and she is unarmed, and unarmoured, won't the armour just impede him?
We can only hope
She will just dodge his attacks!
Science: Or take a quick look at the sword, roll her eyes, and go "Oh, this time you managed to pull out in time . . . "
0:03 close your eyes and imagine this being said in a different context...
That was a lot funnier that I thought it was going to be.
Sounds like Lindybeige narrated a gay romance audiobook.

PFFFFFFFT hahahaha
Katie Arnander, the maker of the bowl which became Lloyd's first helmet!
Roset828 What a memory you have there!
the depth of this has actually been really useful. I've been getting into blacksmithing and wanted to learn how to make swords and knives, both for myself and because people pay small fortunes for custom made knives or swords
12:29 "Hooray!" That seemed to be most sincere hooray i've ever seen. Ya did good LB
I don't even remember what happened last week but Lindy remembers what happened 30-ish years ago.
I can tell you've never met Katie. Sweet, beautiful, graceful Katie. Her eyes cut deeper than the sword-that-was-not-to-be.
Maybe you can't remember where and how you met your wife, or what your sisters children look like. But one remembers Katie.
We all remember our Katie . . . not all of us have ruined what could have turned into a perfectly mediocre sword, though . . .
Well, it does sound like it was a traumatic experience
You've never been scorned by a woman, sir.
Sharp features are the blade that cuts the deepest.
(and whatever other jokey nonsense I could add if it wasn't 3am)
Hell know no fury like a woman scorning a man's sword?
Katie left a mark on this man. He named his sword after her. She must has been incredible.
Ive done a knee bend on every sword I own at least once, but watching Loyd bend his sword towards the end made my heart jump. Cannot wait for the next part, hopefully there will be an armor update in between =D
Nice to see the lindybeige knitted jumper use while forging.
+2 Knitted jumper of lucky beginner's forgery skills?
Really, really, want to see a comment from Katie Arnander on this video! 😀
'It's so soft!'
'We do this process to harden it'
-Lindybeige, 2018
So, if Katie Arnander had been called Katie Mainwaring-Phipps your sword would have a really stupid name?
12:28 That was by far the least confident and heroic "hurray" I've ever heard.
Are you sure you're happy about these results, Lindy?
Micah Philson It has a wonk in it
And it might not be fully hardened, we haven't seen them perform any kind of file test to check.
I think the magnitude of the risk he just took hit home.
You all act like he didn't know this was the ultimate test and final step of forming the blade. The slight wonk won't make a huge difference, and he knows he's inexperienced, so even with expert guidance it probably has a fail point or two, I don't think that's why he's nervous.
Being able to flax as far as it did is indicative of tempered martensite. Sure, it may not be an exactly uniform 55HRC across the entire blade, but that is not important to be fully functional as a sword.
Ahh that brought back fond memories of days spent at the forge. Good as usual.
This blade will taste frenchmen blood very soon!!
or katie
Lindyblade of Frog-eater Slaying +5 bloody murder and mayhem +2 morale when fighting frog eaters +2 delay fatigue when fighting frog eaters . . .
We need part four Mr. Lloyd.
I tried to follow this guide and now my socks are on fire :(
At least you didn't end up with a crystilized lump of iron because of a Katie . . .
That quench operation was fantastically smooth for a novice smith. Well done! I will say though, blue into a light plumb seems a bit soft for a sword temper. I'm used to seeing straws into deeper golds, maybe blueish on the center of the blade.
But but... Oh where art thou part 4? Surely the grinding and finishing shall be seen... I shall delve!!!
*MORE LONG WW2 VIDEOS LIKE THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC ONE PLEASE!!!! I LOVED LOVED LOVED THAT ONE! I LOVE ALL THE LONG 20+ MIN VIDEOS!*
Wait so the sword Arnander is a direct reference to the distractingly attractive Katie Arnander who ruined your first attempt at a sword.
The Sword of Arnander: harbinger of ruined dreams, bringer of spoiled metal, breaker of teenage hearts, slayer of the frog eating fiends?
I require part 4
Nice to see him using ye olde angle grinder 😂 4:38
And ye olde blowtorch 10:48
Yeah, I would still prefer ye olde slaves* to do this pesky jobs... but what can you do? xD
* slaves, apprentices... whatever lowly minion I could summon from the salt mines. (=
Well you see, dragons are just so expensive to hire these days, ever since they formed a labor union.
Also ye olde 5 burner gas forge
Bobcatethan not to mention *ye olde* fluorescent light! No torches and strange metal bowls spouting fire hanging from the walls? Heresy!
Witchcraft! Light the fires!
Lloyd, i think you did an outstanding job, with an EXCELLENT teacher! The final warp can be gotten out in tempering. I would say, from experience with en45 swords, that you have to bend it pretty damn far the other way, rtemper to thw same colors as before, then cool of rapidly in water, should get the blad3 pretty straight.
I've really been enjoying your armor/sword videos. I enjoy all of them but these are great because of the joy and amazement of you show in learning about this stuff which you obviously have a passion for. Very cool.
Great thumbnail! There's a lot more I could be commenting on, but I'm not seeing anyone else making the same observation. It was very striking while scrolling through my feed.
2.02 It’s all gone crystalline!?!
*metallurgist rage!*
I know what your teacher meant but... but...
Cheers for making it this, Lindy. It’s always nice to see good honest metal work in action. Looking forward to seeing the final product.
This has so far been THE MOST instructive series on forging swords I've ever seen, and I've seen quite a few. Great job Lloyd! Looking forward to the finished product.
I just heat treated my first sword using this video as a guide. It is a Xa 17. It turned out very well. Thank you.
Thank you for filming this and explaining things as you go. It's been quite fascinating to watch.
My hat off to Tom for being such a patient man.
It seems like you still have a crush for Katie, Lloyd. ;)
rasnac *I think he doth protest too much*
seeing he's naming it after her I think you're not wrong .
Love the storytelling. Best part yet!
There is something about how you do this that draws me to watch all your videos! Very funny and well done! Love the making things playlist!
Am I missing something... Isn't there a part 4?
This was 3+ months ago.😓
Part 4 is now out
i love the excalibur music in this video that film is literally the best
YYYYYAAAAAAYYYYY!!!! More swordsmithing! Now just need the videos detailing the rest of the work and video updates on the armor! Can't wait to see the helmet and shield he picks!
I've just binged watched the last three parts and now I want _moar._
I await eagerly.
Nice! Congrats!
The glowing blade was a nice touch.
I really like this series. This is cool.
Have bloody loved watching these
Saint Dunstan tweaking the Devil's nose with his smith's tongs.
Fine art, that.
Can’t wait to see when it’s done along with your armor, it’ll be even more awesome when you have both.
More Lindybeige is never a bad thing, also best of luck with the next step of your sword :-)
Really enjoying following your progress on this. Coming along very nicely :)
Best one of these series yet.
There's something perfect about Lindybeige crafting a sword
nerve-wracking clenching of the sword, but lovely to see the update!
And here's probably why (good looking) women were presumably not very welcome in smith workshops: you don't want the newbie apprentice wondering/confused which is the hottest object, as he's being trained to give that his full attention XD.
This series is just adorable. There's nothing like seeing a newbie to smithing learning the ropes.
i'm really glad to see each new instalment, it feels like we're on your shoulder, while you perch on Tom's shoulder :)
That knee test solidified A and B scaling for dexterity and strength, respectively.
I feel that Katie may have put an end to more that one mans dreams.
Shouldn't you quench your sword in the blood of you enemy?
David Messer french blood is low quality would ruin the blade
You need to quench it in the urine of a red haired boy a night of full moon in the direction of the magnetic north.
There'll be time enough to quench the blade in the blood of the enemies when he has taken the time to sword out things with Katie . . .
I prefer the blood of a fearsome beast, like a lion... or a honey badger.
The iron on the blood makes the blade stronger
Hey man great video. I really cant wait to see the next episode! I want it now!
I saw the thumbnail for this video in my notifications and thought for a second that Lindybeige was making a light sabre!
We need more content like this. Spot on!
I love how a heated sword looks! Like a lightsaber!
Yes! More Lindy! Get that sword done!
Distractingly good looking. Thanks for the new adjective.
I've really enjoyed watching this series as the sword and armor come to life
I love yr videos, educational and fun to watch....so thank you.
LOL! That's where 'Arnander' came from! ^_^
This is such an interesting set of videos!
My lord! That bending at the knee at the end got me to spill my tea!
Oh dear, what a waste of perfectly good tea. Oh dear, oh dear.
Thank you for explaining quenching !
You’ve done better than the first, second, and third times the boys and I tried to forge...a thing. Then again, we were all of 16 and only had discarded bits of an abandoned railway track to work with. We managed to make a slightly narrower railroad spike.
Still, it was a proof of concept!
The tale of your first attempt at forging a sword was heartbreaking. Heartbreaking!
I've been watching videos about forging and weapons almost religiously for almost 2 years now and I never understood why exactly heat treating worked until now
No part 4? Impressive work so far.
That bend test at the end gave me a heart attack
Katie Arnander. Now I understand everything.
You know nothing, Jon Snow! :-D
At the begining, I saw those sparks in the forge, and knew where this story was going.
Someone put "will I set fire to my socks" on a loop
I envy this guy's fun life.
A lot of fun watching these
It's a beautiful thing to watch...
What about polishing and adding the handle and stuff? I wanted to see that too!
Katie will do that part.
Is it named Arnander after said distractingly attractive woman?
Perhaps it's a coincidence.
I still think it should be Lindiblade...
In honor of the girl so fine, you were distracted from making an epic, badass sword!
But, she thought it was funny, and was the very reason for you not having a cool sword all your life, so unfortunately, I don't think it could have worked out.
Even sounds like a sword name.
Lindyblade is sword of a catchy name, I think . . . Lindyblade +5 mayhem and murder +2 morale +2 delay fatigue +1 vs frog eaters . . ..
this is so cool, cant wait for next one
We covered this stuff in my material properties course. It was really tough, but really fun.
Ive been watching your videos for the last 3 days. I just can’t get enough of your delivery style and interesting subjects. Especially the armour and sword.
I can not wait to see part 4? Grinding / hilt build?
6:05 "Ok Lloyd the camera's rolling act natural"
Quenching? Baptism of fire might be more appropriate, St. Dunstan and 5 burners considered...
And here I thought Arnander was a name like Durandal, Hrunting, or Anduril, imbued with ancient magic and fit for a mighty blade. I guess it does have magic of a sort...
OMFG PART THREE FINALLY ♥
awesome series!
Yay I have been waiting for this!
Lol Thom seems pretty patient yet still slightly annoyed all the time. Kind of how I am when amateurs are in my shop lol
