  • Coming off the release of their most successful home console of all-time, Nintendo set it sights to new innovations with a tablet controller loaded to the brim with features. In the end, Nintendo's first HD console wouldn't break the same ground as its predecessor. In fact, it would go down as one of Nintendo's biggest commercial bombs of the 21st century.

Here's some background information on this series came to be:
The Story of the Wii U was never on my radar when I was making videos. When I decided to give CZcams one final try in 2020, I started with the DS and planned on making the great console war after that. But something special happened during the summer of 2020. After roughly a year of hunting, I completed my north American Wii U collection. All 164 physical titles were in my possession and I added one more when Shakedown Hawaii was released. I felt proud of my achievement and wanted to celebrate.
I don't remember the exact date I began working on videos. I was sometime after I finished editing the Frontlines video. I basically worked non-stop on these videos for over a month. I was writing an episode a day and then editing them almost as fast. I had two episodes completely finished on September 15. The remaining three episodes still had a lot of work left, but I took the rest of the week off anyway. On September 16, my partner gave birth to our son. I didn't get back to editing until the next week. I spent three straight days in my living room editing for 8 to 10 hours a day to try and get everything done. My son was a week old and I had plenty of family and friends around watch my baby. I grinded out the final product, made my thumbnails and decided to take a week off. That week would turn into a few months. Having a young child is incredibly draining on one's energy and it takes a ton of creative output to make these videos on the grind that I was doing.
The series was a huge success btw! After the first episode premiered it had over 1000 views, which was crazy to me. My videos never did that well so close to release. In the coming weeks, CZcams would start promoting my videos through the algorithm and bringing in all of you wonderful people. You take the time out of your day to watch what I've made and I'm so grateful for that.
This series is also dedicated to my son. While I didn't spend much time working on the series after he was born, the weeks leading up to his birth were dominated by work on this series and with my day job. I'll always remember this series as the one leading up to my son's birth and it will hold a special place in my heart because of it.

Sure the others have their benefits and games but to me the Wii U was an interesting consoles that does everything I want instead of needing a Vita/Phone and PS4 for Remote Play, Gyro, having AV out if I want and approaching games from Nintendo as I haven't tried many of theirs before (Virtual Console or Wii/Wii U) and it's been interesting.

The switch's livrary started out as a carry over from the wii-u. Nintendo knew how great the games on the wii-u were, so they brought it over to the switch. The switch has great games on its own, but bringing over the wii-u's good games was definitely a good way to show people what they were missing.

@@MeatEatingVegan777 In some cases yes. Many of them are good and as new/coming back to Nintendo after trying the Wii/DS very briefly (I still own them) but still being into PS/Xbox prior I have enjoyed the Wii U/3DS as a refresh (not played many of the third parties on it but for the few first/indie/third party I do have they are a lot of fun and showcase the system well).
The gimmicks and collecting/branching out has been a worthy experience, trying different genres and Nintendo's style has been interesting and even going for platforms even if they are failures they still have an appeal I'm willing to try and get the most out of them.
And the Switch is just a screen with 2 Wii Remotes on the side concept I remember seeing in a few videos.
The point of the Switch as a hybrid of console and handheld/portable controllers, HD Rumble and still providing split-screen multiplayer is a good idea I won't deny that.
The 2 screen approach is lost though but obviously they can be just menus or mapped to buttons compared to less of the HUD on the TV and more on the gamepad/more things active and accessible.
That and i know many people don't care for second screen experiences (that or TV/Gamepad compared to the DS having the screens closer) but eh, to me it's sad it's gone.
The Switch is good but I don't own one so I can't say much other than I see the appeal/understand what the console does.
I'm waiting for the right games on it (Bayonetta 3/Metroid Prime 4) as I don't rebuy games I have on a platform which the Switch has many I own on PS3/360 already but the few I don't I'll likely go for.

    • @suntannedduck2388
      @suntannedduck2388 Před 3 lety

@@shawnd567 Didn't they just make sequels to a handful of Wii games? Like you have Wii Sports Club which is Wii Sports in HD with a few tweaks, Wii Fit U which I assume is more content, Wii Party U and then many of the major Nintendo games like Donkey Kong Country, Mario Bros U/Luigi U being DLC and a few others I could list. While some would have been a good idea, but as the Wii U is backwards compatible and many of it's games were similar to the Wii anyways I think they already did that in a way. That and obviously some 3DS games were also reworked to be on Wii U like Mario 3D World or Wii U to 3DS like Poochy and Yoshi's Wooly World (I don't think Star Fox Zero/Starfox 64 3D counts but I think they could due to just being a remaster again of 64). And if you want to count the remasters of Zelda and other games on the system even though they do have their own additions that make them feel great to play/feel like they use the Wii U well. That's just what I've noticed when I look at the library as someone that only started collecting for Wii U for a few years now and any time the system is brought up what games I see that seem similar and those that are different on/exclusive to the system. I'm no expert on Nintendo systems, I'm still getting used to what they have done but when I look that's what I've noticed at least with the Wii U library from research and based on what I own as I've been collecting for the Wii and Wii U.

I got the Deluxe Set in December 2012 and got all the games I wanted for Christmas that year! NSMBU was my most anticipated game at that time, I thought it looked so much fun and beautiful! No matter how much people hate on this system, I’ll forever love mine. It brought me so much joy over its life, and I still play it to this day too! Games like Nintendo Land and Affordable Space Adventures really showed off how incredible the dual-screen gameplay could be, it was just so unfortunate it wasn't expanded much beyond that. I loved my Wii U during it's run with the great first-party releases, amazing Virtual Console selection, and Wii library. As I'm not a Zelda fan, Paper Mario Color Splash was my personal swan-song for the console, and while it was absolutely frustrating at times, the absolute charm and character it had made up for it, and was an amazing last experience for me. Color Splash still ranks as having some of the funniest and best dialogue of any game I've played (beaten perhaps only by Portal 2).

(Warning: the following comment is really long)
I remember when I first got my Wii U like it was yesterday!
It all started back in 2014. I was just a kid who simply when to school, did his homework and didn't know (or at least cared for) what videogames were. I was a happy boy, but then one day, I was invited to my friend's house and he introduced me to my first videogame console and videogame I had ever seen: the Wii U and Mario Kart 8! We started playing and..... I LOVED it! (Even though I was really bad at the game)
Suddenly, something changed inside of me. I suddenly wanted to go back and play it again. I loved it so much that I BEGGED my parents to get a Wii U for either my birthday or Christmas. The months went by and every time we went to a mall or a shop, I immediately went looking to see if there was a game store and, of course, if they had any Wii U games, specifically Mario Kart 8. In fact, I didn't even care if they had a Wii U, I just wanted to see if they had the game.
Then came Christmas 2014. Like any regular kid, I woke up and I immediately went to wake up my parents so we could open up the presents. There was one present that was shaped like a big box and just like any human being, I opened it first and suddenly I was the happiest kid in the world. I got a Wii U deluxe set that came with Super Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land, but I was confused after seeing no Mario Kart in any of the presents, but like an idiot, I almost forgot to check the stockings. I checked them and there it was: Mario Kart 8! After that, my dad and I spent the rest of the day unboxing the Wii U, setting up all the data, like our Miis, language, county, etc, and playing Mario Kart 8.
For the rest of December 2014 and January 2015, I was just playing Mario Kart 8 non-stop before I started school in February. I was just having so much fun learning the controls, unlocking all the characters , stamps and playing a lot of battle mode and online matches (Back then I didn't realize how bad the battle mode was. Don't judge me). Of course, I eventually played 3D World and Nintendo Land and as time passed by I got more and more Wii U games to play by myself and with my friends.
I know this comment basically admits that I have A LOT of nostalgia for the Wii U, but I don't care. I love and will always love the Wii U (and Mario Kart 8, of course) and no amount of negative videos or switch ports will ever change that!!

It's nice to see an in depth analysis of the Wii U not boil down to "it sucked" or "total failure". And while the Switch will surpass the Wii in overall sales, the mobile style menu after seven years is really underwhelming, and the fact that the Switch is essentially just a gaming device. The Switch made me realize how much I just miss the novelty of handhelds, and the 3DS/2DS as a whole.
I wonder if the Switch might have actually had some charm, music if Iwata were still alive. For me personally though, I regret not getting a Wii U at launch, I definitely would have happily spent my time between games on the Miiverse. RIP Wii U. 😢❤

I think I would've been more engaged you had illustrated Nintendo's business situation more. Events like EA dropping the Wii U, Ubisoft not releasing a fully finished game, the horrid marketing, Nintendo's lack of capturing "mature" mainstream appeal, Nintendo's financial situation across the years, ect... You kind of do that at the end, but not often throughout the main body. The Saturn isn't a particularly good analogy, because it was a success. When looking into the business side, the Saturn (despite selling less than half the Wii U) turned a profit because SEGA reduced production costs to accommodate. Nintendo didn't.

I remember my Dad buying me the Black Wii U+ Nintendo Land bundle when I was 5. I was so happy because I played it with my cousin (age 27 at the time) and taught me how to use it. My cousin went out and would surprise me with 3ds games like Smash 4 3ds and Mario Kart 7, along with Wii+ Wii U games like Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, and Splatoon. When my Mom bought the Mario Maker bundle for me, we made levels and tried to beat each others levels.

Throughout me owning a Wii U since Christmas 2012, I honestly never saw any problems with the console and always saw the optimistic side of things, mostly because of the new HD feature it had, and since it had vWii, I could continue to remain satisfied with the console, and still give praise to its installments. I felt people took the Wii U for granted back then with the features it had. The option to still browse the internet, Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services being available pretty much right away, and most of all, Virtual Console. The Wii U had it's bad moments, but it's a shame it was underpraised. The Switch may be doing better in terms of games being sold, with Wii U ports being brought on, but it lacked so much out of the box compared to the Wii and Wii U. Hulu is the only accessible streaming service available, and CZcams was lucky to get a switch release too. There's no form of internet browsing, and worst of all, there's no Virtual Console whatsoever. I think at least VC would be a nice feature to have come back, bringing in the VC installments the Wii U had to offer, and introducing GameCube and 3DS installments too, all in HD, since Nintendo has such a problem with third-party emulation. The Switch is a revolutionary and legendary console yes, but the Wii U had more to offer right out of the box to be honest, but that's just me.

Nintendo murdered Wii U the same year the device was released by supporting the 3DS and neglecting the Wii U from the beginning to the end of both devices life and this is what pees me off with Nintendo is that they now supporting one device and I think only 2 Switch games made by Nintendo was/is released in a whole year and none Switch eshop exclusives produced and developed by Nintendo this year either...
Imagine Sony supporting Psvita over PS4 coz that is exactly what Ninty did with their tired old 3DS and the WiiU...
      On Wii U I gave Mario Kart 8 6/10
coz it lacks in content compared to the other exclusive racing games on the other consoles
Smash Bros for Wii U lacks a 12 hour 2D platform adventure mode that is bigger and better than All Streets of Rage games put together so for that reason Smash Bros on Wii U I gave a 7/10
NintendoLife reviewer gave Angry Birds for Wii U 8/10 even though the game cost 50 dollars to download from Wii U eshop..
Throughout Wii U's life there was a maximum of 12 retail games released each year and the first year was dreadful coz 3,2,1 or 0 Nes VC game(s) was drip fed once a month to Wii U eshop and that went on for a whole year and whilst waiting for that Big Ninty game to be released I had to put up with a maximum of 3 Wii U eshop fillers known as indie games...
Ofc I flipping complained on Miiverse and to Nintendo and a few days later Satoru Iwata took to the internet to apologize to existing Wii U customers then he sadly passed away...
Now where is the Switch eshop exclusives such as Duck Hunt 2, Metroid Pinball 2, Kirby's Blok Attack 2, Wario mini games, Zelda mini puzzle game where Link got to push blocks...
3DS HD next and the device can connect to Any TV wirelessly through the magic of Bluetooth but the device will play All 3DS and Switch cartridges

To me consoles with nothing to offer like the HyperScan are reasons to not get a Console en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperScan. For casuals two screens or gyro doesn't mean much, only good marketing and having family games or some that are simple and familiar, or games that have aspects similar to real life (Sims, GTA, Animal Crossing and others that fit) besides characters that are cute, guns/cars being in the game for power fantasy or whatever (in the case with certain mobile games). Core gamers on other systems only care about the games (mature games or ones that fit story/gameplay/multiplayer in certain ways) with hardware not having many changes or those changes being used after launch usually and game interest differs from person to person but still in the Shooter, Action Adventure and RPG space. And Collectors find many aspects of Consoles interesting and whatever games have. That's how I see it in short, I am generalising of course but either way you probably get my point. There is nothing wrong with any of those factors but it makes sense what people are really after and why a unique system, or a system with only certain factors where people really "get" the system (understanding, purchase, etc.). That or appreciate it for it's niche appeal than popular and fitting in with popularity/peers.
While the Wii U might not have had much push as the 3DS, Gamecube or N64 which got more love even with low sales and whatever crossovers, peripherals, and other details the Wii U still is an interesting console to me.
I got the Wii U in January 2018 and I understood everything about it from brief research and using the system but then again I got into Dual Screen/Motion Controls/Collecting in recent years after getting bored with trends that don't interest me being the reason I don't care about buying many games on PlayStation/Xbox. And wanting to see what Remote Play was like on PS systems and with Xbox having it besides just Smartglass and having no clue what it's like I have yet to try it but might not care as much as I don't really use the Xbox One and care more about my 360 and even using that for Xbox Original games, even the Wii U I care more about the games then the Xbox One's few I keep the system for/besides being a Blu-Ray player. I'll gladly buy a Hack n Slash, a Visual Novel, or anything from past generations that are Racing games, Shooters, and other common genres, but if there is mostly Open World RPGs, Battle Royales and more I could not care less as they aren't interesting to me for gameplay and no going back and forth, leveling up, boring dialogue, large levels that take too long to get to and more can get me to try them. Watch Dogs Legion is impressive with how Ubisoft has pulled off NPC AI in it and other elements in their games (even though I don't play them but have seen what their like in videos/those that do play them) but otherwise I go for Gameplay and many of them don't interest me.
Back on topic, I got the Wii U to experience Nintendo's games for a 2nd time as with the Wii/DS I didn't really as much even with a few Zeldas, Rhythm Heaven and third parties that I did enjoy and I've always been with PlayStation since the PS2 (but got a Vita later and only got a New 3DS XL in April 2020) and Xbox a fair amount. As I'm into collecting now I've enjoyed the Wii U with the 20 games I have so far (and the 3DS with series the Wii U didn't offer more recently) and looking across genres or how AAA (of those I don't own for other systems) and Indies use it has been interesting to see. I've enjoyed Dual Screen and Gyro since a bit before I got my Wii U and which other systems used them more. Even with games not having both screens used I still enjoy having the option to put the game on the second screen for Devil's Third and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze. And I don't own a Switch due to price and games I already own/know about already so I don't see much need for it just yet. That and I'm hoping for Bayonetta 3 & Metroid Prime 4. Obviously that means with the Wii U I won't be getting many titles but even with the 20 I have I'm satisfied and still playing my Wii U to finish of/replay those games.
The problem I see is that people either don't care about how they stand out with new tech in old tech and just want 'graphics', the same controller, good stories/multiplayer/whatever IP comes up from their studios, mature games and other general stuff, the graphics apparently people can't get behind Nintendo's consoles for in many cases besides Story from what I hear from my family which to me is hilarious. Graphics isn't everything after all, Gameplay is important and if you can't play a game, Graphics means nothing to the experience. Sure you need to be able to see things and it looks pretty but otherwise if the experience is boring the story and more has to step up of course. To me I think with the Wii it wasn't just to reuse the Gamecube and add a faster CPU but to use Motion Controls, make it accessible for those that didn't have 720p or other TV types then a CRT and it made light gun games possible to stick around more besides the few advances after that on modern TVs. To me while the Switch is similar in position to the Wii with people that have 1080p displays it feels necessary, even the Xbox Series S being 1400p doesn't seem like the worst idea if price is important to people and something a bit further forward than the 1080p on the Xbox's besides the One X.
That and people just don't get Nintendo's mature titles or they don't reach enough notice compared to Mario and Zelda, or don't care for other genres as much which to me is the reason I've enjoyed buying third parties or older First Party PS & Xbox titles on PS3/360 and before or Nintendo's titles. The variety interests me as a Collector. For me telling my family, other than Zelda even though you can tell them Fire Emblem, Metroid, Fatal Frame and more exist and they know a fair amount about gaming (they aren't casuals) but they just don't get it. I know my family are into RPGs but hate Zelda BOTW because it has no story (and still can't get past it being game of the year because of the similar features they have seen in games before and after it even though it's literally 2020, sigh) and you can point out any other Zelda game on an older system and it's still like talking to a brick wall. Even if the stamina system was in Skyward Sword saying what came from the past or fan feedback apparently doesn't change much when talking to people if other factors people want to point out. Obviously what people look for isn't a bad thing but gameplay is important and Nintendo goes for gameplay and games with no dialogue like Metroid Prime 1 & 2 (which I have only brought up a few times to them) and to me seems impressive even if the goal/no NPCs/the Disk size being limited for Gamecube games, and them being so into Ubisoft, Bioware or other open world games it's hard to make a point if they do play other genres 'somewhat' but focus on the trend of Open World RPGs these days besides sometimes Indie Platformers or Indie Open World games like No Man's Sky. That and rarely going back a generation unless it's something particular which was the case with trying out Sacred 2. If it's advertised to them they will know about it, mix with their interests in story/some different gameplay idea but it depends, otherwise who cares.
I have enjoyed the many games on Wii U and the Wii and wish to get Gamecube games for my Wii at some point but honestly it's hard to tell people things if they aren't NEW or don't get the appeal/don't care for spin-offs. You can literally research it and know everything about it but they don't care. Now obviously it's their choice but people that move forward or only focus on the bare minimum aren't worth talking to or convincing. Collectors and people that 'get' things are the ones these systems are for besides the fans of the company's products and those that have enough told to them via Review Sites or whatever is big enough and fits are criteria works don't care. Whatever sounds cool or whatever fits a path they take/mixed with other medias is what many go for rather than experimenting.
Sure for others the name, marketing and more is the case which are fair points but honestly many people don't get it or only got Sony's NEW experiences with VR/the Dualsense Triggers but many people with Nintendo see them too much as company too big on Nostalgia which sure they have a lot of long running series, and even Microsoft or some of Sony's but to me it's not a problem with Splatoon or older games if different gameplay is what I'm looking for being a factor. Heck even Knack is a Beat-Em-Up but people say it's a Platformer. I don't know if it's because of what people were told by the creator's or what and but people believe it if they haven't played many games or don't get the terminology, and if people haven't used the Wii U and Vita or researched them as they don't care and they are systems that have a lot going for them it's sad, as garbage systems deserve the hate, but if it doesn't have enough 'mature AAA games' it's a failure is the most laughable thing if gameplay to me is important not the artstyle, tone and whatever factors that don't effect the game other than being unplayable or people just sticking to the same.

It should've been easier to develop for in the beginning.
