  • The Nintendo Gamecube is loved by many, but the era of Nintendo it represents was one of the most difficult for the company. It would take everything in Nintendo's power to make the system successful. In the Story of the Gamecube, I look at the history and development of the console while also giving an honest critique on the system and Nintendo as a whole.

The third anniversary of the Story of the Gamecube is coming up and I wanted to share some thoughts with you guys about the video.
I'm still amazed that I made this series and really started taking youtube seriously. I started making videos on here all the way back in 2010 with scripted comedy bits. I tried a bunch of different things over the years, but I spent the bulk of the mid-2010's not making videos on a consistent basis. I was in my early 20's and free time wasn't all that common.
Eventually the bug was scratching way too hard and I decided to give video making another run. I started working on a series of videos about the gamecube in early 2018. I spent months researching everything I could about the gamecube in an attempt to make the ultimate series on the video. The final product became more of a documentary than I originally intended, but I liked it and kept going. By the time I finished this series, I knew I wanted to keep making videos about video game history.
As my first video in the series, The Story of the Gamecube is rough around the edges. The quality isn't nearly as high as it is today and my voice is awful. I have no idea who I was trying to impersonate. But the core foundation is still there. I remember having a ton of fun making this series and it'll always hold a special place in my heart. It's what finally got me into youtube as a platform and I'm grateful for that.
And I'm grateful for everyone who has watched this series! If I went back three years ago and told myself that this video would have over 100,000 views, I would have lost my mind. That's the reality today and I'm still as shocked as ever. Thank you so much for watching and enjoy the videos!
(Should I remake this at some point? I feel like I almost have to, right?)

I remember vividly the day I got my GameCube in the summer of 2002. I had gone to the store, money in hand, intending to get a PS2 and Final Fantasy X after seeing the game at a friend's house and being very impressed by it. When I got there, I saw that the GameCube was fifty dollars less so, on the spot, I decided to get one so I could get a second game with it. The two games I got were Sonic Adventure 2 and Super Smash Bros Melee and after getting home and playing them I knew I had made the right choice. I never regretted it and to this day the GameCube is still my favorite game system ever.

I knew a kid in 6th grade named Justin who’s grandma gave him like 20 dollar a week allowance and would just buy stuff from other kids cause he was pretty much the only kid with money. I wanted a Gamecube for Christmas but as the youngest of 4 I knew my parents would never spend that much on just me, so I started selling my old N64 games I never played anymore to him for 20 bucks a piece. After getting rid of Mischief Makers, A wrestling game, a shitty racing game I can’t remember, and the south part game I was able to give my parents 80 bucks toward my present. They went the extra mile and got me Smash Melee cause they knew how much I loved playing it at my friends.

I purchased the purple console on that November 2001 and my mother got me the Luigi's Mansion title for Christmas. I had to wait almost an entire month before I could get the game to play it. Brings back so many memories and I still am playing these games today. In 2020 alone I beat LOZ WindWaker, Mario Sunshine, and Star Fox Assault/Adventures. I love the Gamecube! It's my favorite console of all time. Such a unique console with innovative ideas, and really fun peripherals. Metroid Prime, RE4, and that oh-so-scary Resident Evil Remake! So many other good titles. I'll probably never shoot for a full collection, but I've got about 150 games, WAY more than any other console in my collection. Thanks for this well-written piece. One suggestion: you may want to get a different microphone or work on leveling, since there was some fuzzy distortion of your voice. Keep 'em coming!

The issue with the mini DVD is hugely overstated. Few games used multiple discs on the GameCube and the GameCube version of a game was almost always better than the PS2 version. GC also had a great deal of third party support, especially in comparison to the N64, Wii, and Wii U.

It's really amazing how the perception of this system changed.
In 2003, on Nintendo forums, actual Nintendo fans were saying "this system has horrible third party support, how can Nintendo learn from this and make sure they NEVER make a mistake like the Gamecube again."
By 2013, people on Nintendo forums were saying "Nintendo needs to get back into gear and make a GOOD system like the Gamecube that third parties are actually willing to develop for."

The game cube is one of the greatest game consoles ever:
-it had far less games then other consoles, not to mention pcs
-it didn't support networking unlike other consoles, not to mention pcs
-it didn't support cds nor dvds unlike other consoles, not to mention pcs
-it was designed to look like a clown vomit unlike other consoles, not to mention pcs
Truly the greatest game console ever. It is to be expected from a company that:
-treated and still treats 3rd party developers like stray dogs begging for a bone unlike
-enforced family friendly liberal bullshit onto games and software and standardised and normalized corporate censorship atop of governmental censorship in the process
-fought tooth and nail against cross platforming
-fought tooth and nail against publishing on multiple platforms, practically raising a virtual berlin wall between gamers that won't let its costumers play non nintendo games nor let other platform gamers play nintendo games
-actively hunts down and sues people trying to build or find a way to play nintendo games that requires a console nintendo no longer makes nor support the game itself, leaving no legal way to play the games they have already paid for.

What blows my mind is, as I was growing up I was the only one I knew who had a Gamecube.
I initially thought everyone had them (I was like, 6 and had a pretty good childhood). I had no idea.
Then later on, I realized a LOT of people had no idea the Wii could even play Gamecube games.
I just... feel so sorry for everyone. Barely anyone enjoyed the Gamecube when it was in it's prime.
I had my Gamecube until about 2016 when I sold it and I have missed it ever since. Now the games I had are worth a hundred dollars a piece second hand.

The DVD player function was a marketing point for sure, but people who bought a PS2 only mentioned the DVD player as a satellite reason for wanting a PS2.
