Wii U was oozing with soul
This, best Nintendo console alongside SNES and GCN I'd say.
The Miiverse was one of the most lively communities that I've ever seen.
@@Maztuhmind Yeah, met a few people on there. Even used the video chat functionality of the Wii U.
The Miiverse was hands down the coolest community based feature on a home console. Really hope Pretendo makes it to a fully functioning state.
If they keep up their pace they will, because they're making a great progress already (on Miiverse too, the progress is 38% now). Also, they will support Cemu, so we could even see Miiverse on emulator.
I’m scared Nintendo will shut them down or something
It would be awesome to see the miiverse somewhat back in its heyday I just hope if they go through Nintendo won't shut them down
@@nicoledin7091 probably wont they only care about the switch i think

The Miiverse was the life blood of this console. Loading up Wawa Plaza today is so depressing. I miss it deeply. As someone who also bought a Wii U at launch, I can't help but feel like Nintendo really shafted their biggest fans with the console, probably why I never got a Switch.
I hear you. Exactly my sentiments. Exactly why I'll never get a switch. GC and Wii U good enough
pretendo exists
The Wii U is my favorite console Nintendo made!
The Wii U getting some love is always nice. It's such a versatile system with some amazing first-party games plus full backwards compatibility for the Wii and a stellar virtual console. And that's before modding.
I remembered being in middle school, and everytime I mentioned the Wii U, most of my peers would ask "is that an add-on for the Wii" I said "nah its Nintendo's new console" . They were like "huh?" Man Nintendo and their weird namings..
And now Xbox takes the cake
@@psychomantis8007 what the relevance?
@@darkx6869 Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox One S... get it?

And the fact it was rarely marketed. 🤷♂️
I love that the Wii U still celebrates you with sparkles and a different tune on the homescren if you log in on your birthday =) They always wanna make you feel special , wich other console does THAT !
The original DS also did this too
@@HUYI1 not as well it didnt feel like a celebration it felt more like "WOOOW anyway"
@@BonnieBite For the hardware it had, I'm surprised it did anything for one's birthday. It's probably where the Wii U got the inspiration from anyway so I'm thankful for it.
Ah memories, I still remember seeing Splatoon and thinking, "Well, time to buy a console."
I'm so glad that I bought the Splatoon bundle instead of the Mario Kart 8 one.

> lets see how nintendo pulls the plog heh
but in all seriousness it's heart breaking that After WII U, nintendo given up on virtual console which is cool idea to keep classics up, same with Playstation
They closed the Wii Shop channel over two years ago and the 3DS and WiiU eShop in Latin America a year ago so I wouldn't be surprised if it happens soon, but they only had a gimped version of the store so who knows if it's relevant.
Nintendo should have never shut down miiverse
True
Bye the way i got rid of my wii u in 2021 and now I’m thinking ooooooooof still not getting one cuz miiverse
@sheamccready8526 It's back through Pretendo though, and it's great!
Got my Wii U in 2015. Wish I had of jumped on it in 2012. I loved 2 and a half years I had with the system before the Switch came out. Between the Wii U and the GameCube, I don't know which is my favorite. But I love them both, and both are my favorite consoles of all time.
I just modded mine last month. Pretty easy. Would recommend anyone who still has there Wii U do the same before the inevitable shutdown.
I want too.....but have zero clue how sadly
@@packers12to80 if you have a discord or something I can help you

The Wii U is just so cozy, I love it
im so happy ppl are now seeing why the wii u was good
I love me Switch. It's one of my favorite consoles. But there's been a clear regression in features from the Wii-U. Especially when it comes to retro games
Not to mention you can't put a Wii disc in it and play it

I found this video after firing my U up today for the first time in a while to play MK8 & MK Wii with my daughter, we had a blast, i always loved my U back when it was released, i modded my original system and upgraded the gamepad battery before I sold it to a friend after not using it for a year or so. Re-bought one a year ago and love it, iv been meaning to mod it again cos of the emulation and gamecube capabilities. I think the gamepad was crminally under-utilised by many devs. LONG LIVE THE WII U!!
Did you watch this on the wii u by chance?
One of the most comprehensive reviews of the Wii U I've ever seen. Excellent work on this one! I really enjoyed it.
I can't believe I finally found someone that shares my feelings about the Wii U!!!
I just bought one on Ebay a year or two after selling my Switch.
The Switch is a fine console but it just doesn't have any charm and I can safely mod a Wii U to get emulators and stuff.
Plus I never had the money for a Wii U when it was relevant so I finally said "screw it" and bought one only after nearly a decade of wanting one.
I bought one 2-3 days ago glad I did honestly also because of the eshop prices and the eshop closing
Appreciate the Wii U love! My favourite system - I think everyone did it dirty. But not you, so thank you 💙
Very true! It's a superb machine
Another banger from Hikiko. My cousin used to live with us and when he got a gaming PC, he completely abandoned his WiiU and it’s still at my parent’s in a box somewhere. Time to go digging.
It had its issues but I found the Wii U to be massively underrated. Whereas I honestly find the Switch to be a tad overrated. I prefer virtual console to the Switch NES/SNES online, Miiverse over cheap shitter and crackbook support, and the comfy, durable gamepad over baby hand joy cons that get drift way to easy. I also like how Nintendo gave the Wii U actual NEW games, whereas with the Switch they seem more focused on trucking games over from the Wii U, slapping a deluxe to the title, and slapping a new game price tag to something that came out 7-8 years earlier for their prior console.
So well said. All very valid points! I hear you man. Nintendo has gone full crook mode!
Great vid. The Wii U will be looked at as one of the more underappreciated consoles as time goes on and without it, I might not be playing video games still. Thanks to that ps3 store closure scare, I do plan to go back to the Wii U soon.
Please make a part 2! There were several games that I previously had no interest in, but became very convinced to play after hearing your take on them! This was awesome, keep up the amazing work!!!
I might have to now.
@@HikikomoriMedia that wood be awesome 😎
Awesome rundown of this underrated system. One of the great regrets in my life is when I traded in the Wii U for Gamestop credit. Also, Fatal Frame 5's gamepad implementation looks pretty rad!
Nitrorad said it was a neat but annoying gimmick, having something to do with the order of raising up the tablet and hitting the button to enter ghost mode; your brain wants to do things one way while the game needs you to do it the other. I noticed HM said it took a few hours to get it down. I think it sounds pretty awesome though. Would be difficult for Tecmo to do something as cool in a future game.
Play your Wii U and 3ds! Hi all! If you love the Wii U and 3ds please PLAY them daily or at least weekly because your play data is still given to Nintendo. If we all play our systems regularly Nintendo will at least know how much this wonderful community of ours loves the Wii U and 3ds. This is one great thing we can all do easily to support the systems we love! Spread this message to as many people as you can so our big happy Wii U and 3ds family has fun forever! We all were and are a part of something special. Thank you all! ^^
I would love a part 2, this was a great vid that made me feel things i haven't felt in quite some time.
This console is one of my favorites and for a multitude of reasons. The ability to play solely on the GamePad (for the most part), the uniqueness it had with Virtual Console, the games, Miiverse as a whole and for bringing Splatoon as well! Then again, that franchise became one of my personal favorites as it helped me a lot during tough times.
Also, can I say that the music that plays in the Mii Maker menu is so amazing? The melody is brings is so soothing...
39:07 He has a Virtual Boy next to his TV.
Nice to see positive coverage of the Wii U and its legacy. It has some problems but I had a great time with it and its library. Unfortunately, it probably won't get the appreciation it deserves in the future as some sort of Dreamcast-esque wacky retro console since most of its games were ported to Switch, which is a shame.
Slinging fronks and stealing fruit was so fun in Game & Wario. The Wii U was the perfect system to have a game like that and I don't think it could ever be ported in any fashion to the Switch or otherwise.
I will definitely say that Splatoon is my pride and joy on the Wii U, I'm not afraid to admit it. I LOVE that game like no other! And you're right, the Wii U does not deserve to be seen as the black sheep of Nintendo consoles, that's the Virtual Boy's job.
Great perspective and pushing back this system into its deserved spotlight as a much underated console
I started to fell in love with the Wii U about 2 years ago when discovered sone of my old left Wii Games and couldn't play them as my Wii was broken
Then I heard of some of the old staff produced a new Donkey Kong Country Game snd there's an Open World Zelda Game out there so I first had to get those games then the console itself
A purchase I never regret
I wished it had more range for the Wii U Pad connection in streaming Gameplay but I'm bypassing it with a second console I'm moving around my house and yard and plugging it into any near my desired sweetspot's power supply since most of the games I own are playable on Pad screen which isa nice feature
It's worth to mention that I focused also on collecting Wii Games again since Wii U is playing those old games with ease and adjustable solution, being able to plug in HDMI out to an mClassic upscaler
I also like to add that it might be worth of doing the Update Data thing for all retail games you own
Now that I count a 100+ OAL and exclusives in my collection it has become worth a shot as long the entire online network is still running and some games might need an Update to get rid of major bugs maybe
Until now I haven't discovered any game that only runs if you downloaded an update though... many demand one but you it allows you to skip the process and just run the software instead
I use a second console instead for playing to bypass waiting time while its processing updates and backup stuff (using external drive)
However its really about time to purchaseas much desired games from the E-Shop as possible while it's still alive
It's getting sale offs every once in a while and even a new game popped up on 9th of december recently
Hope there will follow some more befor the Shop is being shut off for good
Still there are great E-Shop only games worth to mention like Affordable Space Adventures, Child of Light, Trine 1 + 2 etc.
My third Wii U is modified for retro gaming with backup roms read from my original cartridges I own and doing other experimental stuff
Homebrew support is great I think
A weak point for me is the stock Internet Browser of Wii U as its heavily outdated
I want Chrome instead
3DS system recieved a new update which I had to install to gain back access to the E-Shop
Should Nintendo ever shut down the whole Online Network thing I keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't affect the console's ability to play games without Internet Connection
Yet still something I really appreciate about the Wii U
Have a nice time and stay safe
Greetings from Germany
I keep watching this video. I have two Wii U’s and I just love how you cover so many things and games I’ve never heard of. Will download them now before the eshop closes!
Hey a watched this. Another great video. Need to mod my wii-u. I thought it was a genius console idea when it was introduced.

This physical version was actually more expensive even at the time, since it was seen as a "premium" version being about £70. Now adays good luck finding a physical copy under £200...
I have it as Project Zero here in the UK in a metal box..still haven't played it yet and i've had it for a few years now!
Another great video. I only got a Wii U for the first time last year and only recently played and beat Wind Waker HD for the first time as well. The gamepad was awesome for that game and I'm looking forward to playing more Wii U titles now
If anyone is wondering all you need is a 1tb external hard drive. You can only have up to 300 icons on the wii u at one time. You wont come close to filling up 1tb before u run out of icon space.
the UI of the Wii U is untouchable. Its so good
Preach!
Great video! An in-depth video on the Wii I in 2021 truly is something special.
Please do a follow up because there's many more interesting titles for the system, such as Nintendo Land!!
I wish there was WiiU in my country...
Another great retrospective
The 3ds & wii u's creativity as hardware dwarf the switch's
Switch is basically the same idea as the Wii U and 3DS but it is together now
@@JUSTICE971 Just lacking the second screen, sturdy hardware design and a bunch of features such as a fleshed out virtual console, backwards compatibility, social features, customization features, free online, original exclusives, etc.
I miss my wii u, i like the switch, but i did love my wii u. I think the pad felt better in my hands than the switch. In addition sad few games i had on wii u isnt on the switch.
I had a 1.5 TB USB 2.0 external drive lying around. When I heard I could use this with my Wii U I plugged it in. Works fine.
good to know, I'll try a larger drive when I get around to it.
Great video man. I've never got to use a Wii U before so it was cool to see this. I'll definitely keep my eyes open for a cheap used system. That G&W "Gamer" minigame is awesome.
great content as always man, please do part 2, or really do whatever you want, I'll be here to watch
The expanded gamepad battery is a lifesaver. LAN via a USB adapter works well. Annoying to buy separate but well worth it
OK guys. They just announced the official shutdown in March 2023 so I will say again if you haven't modded yours yet get to it ASAP.
Even though Fatal Frame 5 got released physically in Europe, I was never actually able to buy it, no matter how hard I looked. Sold out everywhere, and quickly rose in price. So in the very few instances of America not getting a physical game Europe did (when 60% of the time it's the other way around), we STILL got fucked over by the scalpers. Great.
i just modded my wii u last night, what a great video!! thanks!
amazing retrospective!
Also I'd be down for a Part 2. There's still some great exclusives not yet ported to the Switch (and some not-so good ones still worth talking about)
that pan to the virtual boy! hahaha
I was in the middle of checking out any potential accessories for consoles (I.E 3DS, Wii, Wii U, Ps4, Switch, and so on), but Im glad to have ran into this video. Although I do own a standard Wii, I for one have an appreciation for my Wii U, and I'll certainly be making the most of what I got.
I should consider the tips you provided to modernize my Wii U, such as getting a new GamePad battery, because on Nintendo Land after completing a few attractions, my battery was already low which is pretty darn dumb. Which can make it difficult for me to play other games such as Pokken Tournament and Smash Bros for Wii U.
Overall, I really enjoyed this video, and provided I somehow find a way to mod my Wii U, would love to try out Miiverse for the first time.... at least..... until it finishes.
I still love and play my Wii U to this day but sadly the problem is that the Gamepad’s Battery is not very good considering Nintendo handhelds has better batteries. Yes I know in the Video mentioned that you could get a better one but I never really found one in my country sadly. Still a Great System Tho!
That's a great video, I was wondering about buying a Wii U in 2022. This video made my decision, I'll do.
Thank you! I had no idea you could get a better battery for the WiiU controller.
I'd love to hear more about the Wii U, so yes more content about this magnificent console.
Yes please a part 2 would be nice.
I messed up my modd, NAND and everything, lucky me that a friend of mine has a wii u too so used his NAND backup, now I am happy with the newest modd.
Was an entertaining video, did give me the urge to take out the console and finally soft mod it for the homebrew, I just never have enough time these days to do so sadly
damn hikiko going directly after me in that wii fit u segment
the wii u was the closest i ever got a console to its launch day 1 weirdly enough. it was about a month after it came out and i have to say for the time i did have some fun it but the problem i had was that over time less games were coming out for it wish is unfortunate and of course these days a lot of games got ported over.
now knowing about the battery fix i may still keep mine after all since i feel like mine is already dead so i thank you for that.
i agree, I love the wii u! you are an OG, got that on launch, not many did
"but its not even close" [pans over to the virtual boy then even further to the cdi]
I didn’t use mii verse even though I had the early 3ds and Wii U. You don’t know what you have available to you till it’s gone
I've still got mine. I've yet to attempt to brick it yet though.
Thanks 😊 for all this info
Any time!
The WiiU was the first console I actually bought with my own money, I remember a friend having it and playing Zombie U on it, that was my system seller. We had so much fun that I decided to go for the WiiU instead of the PS4, which I bought only much later down the line after Nintendo gave up on the WiiU.
To me one of the dearsest systems I own, it followed me all across Europe during several periods where I worked abroad and had a great web browser to stream content, the usual streaming apps and the chat app was quite nice to keep in touch with my friends with video calls etc etc.
A shame now it's mostly a crippled system beacuse software support was ended so soon, hell on my 360 and PS3 most of everything still works...but hey oh!
No mention of the TRUE Wii U killer app, Devil's Third? Disappointing...
Nah but for real, great vid! I really need to get that gamepad battery replacement, and I keep forgetting about Fatal Frame 5 despite being one of the reasons I got the console. Really wish that at least had a physical release in the west like Tokyo Mirage Sessions or Xenoblade Chronicles X.
great video !!
This video is awesome and I’m only a few minutes in at the moment. Definitely getting my sub.
there's a follow-up wii video in the pinned comment
This makes me consider dusting my bro’s wiiu
Such a thorough, and sadly depressing, state of affairs. Because of Nintendo's failure with the U (after buying two at launch), I couldn't care less about Switch.
Me neither
My black 2019 softmoded wii-u is still rocking in 2023 🤟🤟!!
I'm gonna hate when the Wii U eShop goes down. I didn't even like when the Wii's Virtual Console shutdown ☹
Thanks for this awesome video, it helps to slim down the best games for the platform.
One thing I should point out that you didn't mention in the video: the Wii U is very picky with what external hard drive you use. Any external powered enclosure will work, but only a handful of USB self-powered enclosures will work correctly. I personally had 3 different USB enclosures and only one worked without issues, yet all 3 work fine with the original Wii. It seems the Wii U supplies less miliAmps through the USB ports than the original Wii, so finding the right combination of HDD/SSD and USB enclosure might be a question of luck.
thanks man for this focus, you helped me save a lot of time browsing about the console since i didn't use it at all before. i'm willing to get one soon but i got a question ... can i play online with a modded one ? is there any risk of ban or something ? much appreciated man.
My mostest favoritest console of all time! Thanks for this excellent video!!
My pleasure!
Great job!
Man the miiverse was so fucking funny and engaging because people would either draw masterpiece creations with the pen tool or draw zelda with her tits out
Please make a part two.
I ve never had a chance to play Pikmin 3, but there is an indie game, and the gameplay is exactly like Pikmin, on Switch, with the very beautiful artstyle and super chill nice music ~ The Wild at Heart. I really recommend checking it out. Very pretty and fun.
PS Loooved your review. Reminded me of better times, when I d get my weekly reviews for gaming from TV. Was it on MTV? Anyway It used to be much better than babbling bloggers with the copy paste info these days.
Quality content. You guys deserve more views.
Hey, good to know about better batteries, I keep my pad wired up at all times... Also, you’re the first person I’ve heard who liked the single player experience of Splatoon. I’ve avoided the game before but always been curious.
Enjoyable watch as ever. Fatal frame 5 is great and still pretty fucking terrifying in places- emulating it needs a bit of tweaking to avoid broken segments, but the assets look surprisingly good at higher resolutions. It's sad that the wiiu is regarded as a prison for a lot of its exclusives when there's so many stories of Nintendo giving projects and studios support for interesting titles. You even have to imagine platinum games might be eternally grateful for ninty effectively bailing them out by pumping money into bayonetta 2 and wonderful 101.
You got your folders back …..😊🎉
Yes I did
I love the virtual console with donkey Kong, ditty Kong, bonk, bomberman.
My buddies and I spent a ludicrous amount of time playing Sketch in G&W. It was the best|
now is the right time to buy wii U, prices are already skyrocketing, the potential is known to most! great video that just reiterates how wonderful this console was! is there part 2?
maybe I might make one.
I hear that TCG music. Along with some other tracks, you've got amazing taste in music.
Thanks!
Ahhhh the metroid prime trilogy and smash bros u machine 😊
I bought a thumbtack flash drive with hundreds of gigs on it for my wii u and you can still close the flap on the front. Also, the aftermarket battery gives the gamepad extra weight and makes me feel like an adult
Watching this with CZcams in wiiu
I heard Game and Wario wasn't good, so thanks for shining a light on it, and yes I'm so down for a part two video for the WiiU!
Game & Wario is a masterclass party game. I have a feeling that person did not try the multi
Just picked up this system for the first time
You definitely have to mod the system to be able to use an SD card for storage. Only an extremely small handful of actual games allow use of the SD card for photos. By default, nothing except Wii software can be stored or read from an SD card.
Mini Mario and Friends: Amiibo Challenge was an Amiibo exclusive game for 3ds and Wii U.
This has inspired me to Jack my Wii U. Looking for a bigger external SSD to use since mine is only 128 (I had a 256 which was perfect for my needs, but it bricked)
Love the Wii U
It's nice Nintendo let the WiiU get BotW before moving on to the switch.
