The weird smell is coming from the leaky cam plate. It is a common issue for the GT86, where under high revs the oil will leak onto the exhaust manifold and burn from the heat. You can get it re-sealed properly or get a proper aftermarket cam plates.
How high a rev? I'm still in the break-in period on my 86 and I'm not exceeding 4k RPM (mostly not even exceeding 3k RPM) yet I still notice the smell. Particularly when I come off the highway and stop at the light at the end of the exit ramp. Yet on the higway itself the car was routinely cruising around 2.5k RPM.

My thoughts exactly. Quarter tank means fill. Also, no range readout needed…toyotas like this (non prius etc) have been built to 500km range for decades.
On my car its on from ~120-130km before it rums dry... And its very bright. So I would prefer the gt86 way^^

Lexus manual suggests to always keep your fuel tank at least at the 1/4 level at all times. I wouldn't be suprised if Toyota (Lexus) suggests the same for this GT86.

You clearly didn’t do any research into this car before buying it. If you did then most of these issues would not be issues.
Love my FRS. They are fun as hell. They don't make a boatload of power, but that's not the point. They're plenty quick, love to rev, and you can really squeeze the engine every day and hoon it all day long. Its handling is unbeatable at its price point as well. They always "feel" fast...but on paper they aren't too impressive.
Why would you get a car that doesn't "wake up" or start being fun until you're already leagues above the speed limit?
That's the sweet spot, if you are able to have fun in the car without going over the limit, the car is on point.

Exacly....i grew to despise fast byt slow feeling cars like "sporty SUVs" You cant feel shit while you rapidly accelerate dangerous speeds especially since they are also automatic... Sports cars save lives and are fun!
Since I own a BRZ, I feel that I am qualified to address the low fuel light problem.
I solved that issue with a process I call BMG. ( Buy more gas) Or for my Brit cousin BMF.

Toyota made the GT86 to be a successor to the AE86. A light small engined hatchback or 2 door that is the best cornering machine on the planet. It’s made to put a smile on your face on each corner. In drifting it takes corners so fast it’s unimaginable. And it uses an NA engine to make it more responsive.
If only GT86 fully embraced its heritage and was a liftback!
Makes me feel old “it doesn’t have a digital range” just flick the trip each time you fill up and then you’ll learn how much you get on a tank based on how hard you drive it. Also sounds like a proper fuel gauge red light comes on when you have like 20-30miles of Range.

@@Opulence__ i own a 2019 brz and to be honest I just dont care, I daily drive the car ( obviusly ) and when it is on 1/4 of a tank I just fill it again xD I have the "digital range" and I am only able to do 450km with a full tank ahah and 2/3 of the km I do daily it's on the highway ahah
I love my '15 BRZ. Mods? Your best bang is to replace the "Prius tires" with decent performance tires. The OEM wheels weigh 22 lbs. each and I mounted Michelin Pilot 4s' on Enkei RPF1's which weigh about 15 lbs. I saved 20 lbs right there.
200 HP doesn't sound bad until you see how little volume is under the power curve leading up to that peak number. While you are looking at the power curve notice that the torque curve has a canyon right around the rpm's you want to be running. If you drive 1 (or 2) gears lower you might actually see an improvement in mileage along with better performance, but the the dB's go way up! I use an OpenFlash Tuning Tablet in conjunction with an unequal length header (catted to keep it legal) from FT-86 Speedfactory (in Des Moines, Iowa of all places!). Between the header and tune, peak HP only increases maybe 8-9% but the volume under the curve leading to that peak number is fatter and the canyon in the torque curve is filled in and more. The engine is closer to reaching its potential and much more satisfying to drive. Frankly, this is all you need to make the car great.
But I've done more. I saved another twenty pounds by replacing the stock speakers with aftermarket speakers with neodymium magnets from Polk Audio (doors) and Infinity (dash & rear panels). They make the stock navigation head unit sound great and offset the 20 lbs. of sound deadener that I added. 2015's did not get a backup camera but the head unit is pre-wired for one, so I added an aftermarket unit. I added Toyota'a GT86 mud flaps, convex door mirrors, and a Perrin "Gurney flap" (May Daniel Sexton Gurney rest in peace!) Finally, I added a stainless steel cat-back and the rumble AWESOME!

I have a 2017 model and the first 3 issues you mentioned in the video aren't apparent on mine. The fuel range issue has been fixed by the screen which was added in the refresh model, the recall issue won't affect the majority of GT86 owners, and I've not come across the funny smell issue (that could potentially be due to age/wear).
One of the best pieces of advice I can give for owning one of these is to take the plastic plug off the lighter socket in the glove box, take up the floor mat on the driver's side and put the plug over the round hole that's there (it's a 'sound pipe' coming from the engine). It quietens the cabin overall, and changes the engine sound from a loud gurgle to a slightly subdued but much better sounding growl when you rev high.
Last quarter of the tank uses less fuel because it's lighter, feels quicker because you're looking at it more then you would just after you filled.

I've had my 66 reg for over a year and I've never loved a car more. Don't understand the fuel light thing; I mean just do what everyone does and reset the trip to 0 when you fill up. You'll always know where you are that way.
Also got to admit apart from being incredible in the twisties, it's my everyday car. Handling and steering is incredible, and secondhand what a bargain!
Oh, and no turbo lag, no silly electronics or fancy useless bits. God I love that car.

Man, talk about scratching around to find problems, just to make a video! Petrol light? No turbo??? Weird smell??? Dude, come on! 😄 The whole POINT of the GT86 is that it's a throwback to a time when cars were lower powered, with less grip and designed to be exciting in the corners.
Stick a turbo in it and defeat the whole point of the car. You want straight line speed, get a hot hatch. It'll be exciting for about 5.5 seconds from the lights... then the rest of your journey will be boring, compared to the 86!
The speed isn't that much of an issue, to be honest. It just means you spend more time enjoying hooning the car!
No excuses not to clean it, you can still order stuff online 😜

What you're smelling is the brakes, every car does this if you brake too hard it just might be more noticable on some cars depending on how the air flow into the cabin is conducted. The other problems you're experiencing aren't really problems, it just sounds like what you really wanted (and should've probably got) is a TT, more planted with better straight line performance and driver aids that hold your hand tighter. this isn't an autobahn eater, it's a well balanced sports car that's happiest being finessed down a b-road, respect it for what it is.
I love my GT86 ,2018 Plate , and I noticed a werid smell when I drive her hard...thanks for the info on the fuel gauge, I always make sure she is never low in fuel because it can cause problems on any car. Thanks for ya videos
Very fair and resonable assessment. Glad I got a 350z! They are such good value and nothing beats the grunt and sound of a big engine. Would take it every time over the whine or whistle of forced induction and if you want to experience it, you have to get one before they are killed off!
Had GT86 and had to drive 60 miles to nearest fuel station , got there no probs . Also replaced with 350z and agree totally ,amazing value!!

I owned one for 3 years. It’s a good looking car and a hoot to drive. I ran one as my only car and it’s surprisingly practical. Not all about straight line speed. Wish I’d kept it 😟

I have an 86 GTS it is my daily and I love it more than anything people should really do their research before reviewing a car:
1. The valve spring recall affected some models between 2012-13 and if it hasn’t caused any issues you shouldn’t take it in before you do research on which dealers at the best with fixing the recall.
2. The fuel light: first you shouldn’t be driving your car down to the light if you want to take care of the car in the long run, second the light comes on with 7L of fuel left which is around 60-70km of driving left.
3. The rubber smell comes with any car with soft compound tyres and you drive them hard like seriously you’d expect it when driving hard wouldn’t you.
4. The power: it was never made to be fast, it was made for the corners and pure handling that is what the cars vision was, you can make them very fast in straight lines with a supercharger like mine which is pushing 380WHP.
5. It’s an import car, UK isn’t meant to have a lot of shops that sell part for the 86, you either import them from Japan or the US.

In the USA one of the issues with the valve spring recall is engine self destruction after the recall fix. Evidently, many (US) Toyota and a few Subaru mechanics are inexperienced at disassembling and re-assembling heads from boxer engines. When cleaning old sealant from the heads some of the sealant can get pushed into oil or coolant passages and when the engine is reassembled a mechanic could apply too much sealant with the same result. The excess sealant may clog those passages, the engine then overheats, and reaches an unpleasant end. Under these circumstances the engine either dies a typical heat death (cracked block, seized pistons, etc.) or worse, it catches fire and destroys the entire car. A class action lawsuit was filed in October of 2019. To Subaru mechanics his was a known issue prior to the lawsuit, so experienced boxer mechanics already knew to be careful cleaning off and applying sealant. The lawsuit has just brought the cleanliness issue to the attention of more mechanics, so they should know to be careful during the the valve replacement procedure.
As you said, this only affects '12 and '13's and otherwise most rebuilds don't suffer this untimely end.
Get some autoglym gear and get it cleaned. Bird crap will eat into the paint and mark it especially when it is baked on in the sun.

A large majority of the features of this GT86 are succeeded from its predecessor, the AE86. It wasn't built to be a street racer... although its chassis design sure makes it look that way, and the original AE86 was modified (note: modified, meaning not the base model AE86) for touge racing due to its body. As such... you won't get a turbo, you won't get great suspension, you won't get a wide array of "racing" features, although I do believe the GT86 should have come with like... a TRD Pro package or trim level. I really do hate that people automatically think "oh it's a race car."

Ive had one for 2 years. I wouldn’t run the fuel past a quarter tank because it’s not good to run a car on empty all the time. It’s bad on the fuel pump long term and I get less cricket sounds when I’m almost full. The cricket sound of the engine actually comes from the fuel pump. I’ve heard people buying new fuel pumps and still getting that sound. So it’s not bad out of the factory. I had to do the recall on mine. They did mess it up but they fixed it for free. It’s been 8 months now and the cars fine. I have a lot of plans for mine as well but we’ll see how soon that happens. Mine had that burnt rubber smell at first but it went away after awhile. It smells like wear on the clutch to me. Mine doesn’t do that anymore though.
For the digital range convenience I would get an obd2 reader and just connect it via Bluetooth to your phone and get all sorts of information
2 things I would have like to have known before picking up my BRZ (march):
1-White Panasonic stock car battery is a known cause of failure, and they upgrade this in newer models and if you take it to get replaced, and due to inactivity loads are going to fail during lockdown
2-Cylinder 1 ignition coil is already triggering fault codes (cylinder 1 misfire detected) it’s intermittent but a know fault/weak point on the car, but there are none in the UK, Fensport sell them, but for £200 per coil, not for a pack of 4, so I am driving about with an OBD ii reader to clear the codes to check if it’s persistent.
is the ignition coil problem only with the brz and not the 86?
Also how can someone fix this and how much does it cost? I dont know if i should buy this car

I forgot I wrote this comment and there was more to the saga than the above. Mechanically the Toyota/Subarus are the same. The differences are the interior trim, bumpers, maybe the keyfob. Basically any problems will be shared between both, but there's benefits - subaru spares at toyota prices.
I was told by the AA it was an intermittent coil fault and I was instructed to wait to it became persistent (big mistake, I thought I was being told BS, I should have trusted my gut). So I wrote the comment after this, but before it developed and diagnosed the actual issue.
The good/bad news (depending how you look at it) was that it was not an ignition coil. Mine was a 2014 model, so had the valve spring recall.
For me, the chumps that performed the recall before I purchased the car clearly did a 'Friday afternoon job' and had installed a variable valve timing gear on the wrong way round, so the valves weren't working quite right - so one cylinder was failing on a compression test (a partial engine drop to do). Weirdly - the car was actually driving fine as I didn''t know what max power was like! It was an engine out fix but I ended up getting it repaired for free on an approved 2nd hand warranty as I got it from a subaru dealer.
Anyway, this is not something you should worry about as it was a rare installer error, and while forums would suggest ignition coils are a weak point, coils are still all fine! :)
I love the car and nothing has gone wrong with it since apart from 1 speeding ticket. It may be 'slow' but it will lead your right foot into temptation at poor times. I would recommend it if it is in budget and looking for a fun car for corners and A-roads. You won't be winning any drag races but I'm smiling around the bends! I use it as a daily and get about 28mpg, but it does have the classic sports car impracticalities - I can fit only one passenger, and another behind them if they are a masochist. Only mods I've done is 18" wheels to fit 225/40 UHP tyres on it such as michelin PS4S or Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersports. Would recommend but not for winter!

@@r.k862 I think google is your friend here - if my memory serves, it's up to early 2014 models (both toyota and subaru). You should be able to check whether there are any outstanding recalls with the vehicle number plate (at least in the UK, and no recalls outstanding would mean it's been done). Since it is an official recall, if it is not already been done it, you should be able to book it in free of charge. Again google will be a better source of information than a stranger in a youtube comment section.
The problem I had is that the previous owner took it to a place that did a rush job - so I'd probably recommend getting recalls done by a subaru/toyota garage which should help if there are any future complications caused by it. I would say my experience is not typical but if you are paranoid about how well the recall had been done, maybe check how many miles it has done and the service history since the recall.
Regarding any other problems - I've not had anything out of the ordinary happen. Just usual servicing checks typical for any vehcile, such as the battery changing and brake pads and rotors. But I've serviced it each year (garage or myself) and it has a pretty comprehensive service history on mine. If you are in the UK you should be able to look up the MOT history (with No.Plate) of the vehicle to see if any advisories have been fixed or left unaddressed to get either an indication of how well it's been looked after or what things to look for. Changing the spark plugs is difficult as it is a boxer engine - so maybe look at when this was last done and see if that needs doing. Basically how it's been looked after or whether it has been boosted at any point will likely effect longevity.
General grievances: I would say the car is loud on motorway drives - there is not much sound deadening material in the vehicle (by design to save weight) so a lot or road noise comes through, and the standard speaker system struggles to compete at 70mph. I don't mind this as I knew it would be the case but it may come as a surprise. I'd also say I'm 185cm tall (6ft 1) and I'm nearing the limit of fitting in the vehicle comfortably as a driver - seats all the way back and steering wheel could be closer and I can hit the cruise control off with my knee. I have a little tramlining due to my aftermarket wheels and tyres but with the stock wheels this was not an issue. I know lots of people change out the centre consol for ones with apple car play or google equiv. The USB port doesn't work with all my friends phones to play media but will charge. The cup holders in the middle of the car collide with my elbow as I change gear so I use the ones in the doors. And despite the fact that I do not have the condensation issue in the rear lights - somehow, there is a dead spider in one of them, so it must have been in there since it rolled off the production line.
I mean I've owned the car for 5 years and done over 50k and I disagree with almost everything this guy says apart from "it's great in corners and comes alive". The valve spring recall took me 2 days in Toyota Yeovil and had a courtesy car in the meantime it wasn't hard, fuel light comes on with around 50miles left same as most cars and it will do around 400miles to a tank anyway just fill it up man? On the motorway it's not thirsty at all I average well over 45mpg doing 200motorway miles a week, slow to overtake? Absolutely not just drop a gear and its quicker than most average cars on the road I never seem to struggle to overtake. Although I've never felt like I struggled to overtake in less powerful and slower cars I've owned either, I think most of these youtubers just exaggerate the lack of power. It's not fast but it's certainly not struggling at 65 😳
I can explain you why they didn't make it come with a forced induction from factory... Well the main reason is that the engine without any forced induction is going to be significantly more durable, for many who haven't driven anything more powerful it should be ok like this already, for those who want more - they can easily let it be modified and have more - it is kind of a perfect tuner car. And without any turbo it's also a little bit cheaper to sell - and it's quite a great price-value already - they already saved on things like fancy dashboard, etc. I personally also prefer without a turbo, if I want to rep the car a lot, I would prefer it like this, because I'm a bit less concerned about durability than I would be if it had one.
I owned a 2012 Honda Si. It was pretty lively. The BRZ is equal in power. Downshift and rev it will get the job done.
after pushing the car hard then slowing down i do notice a smell mostly coming from the front of the car, ive been told it could be a rapid increase in oil pressure which creates the smell but it doesnt seem to impact the cars condition in any way
Whats the ground clearance like on these? Potholes, speed bumps, driveway inclines, any issues? Interested in one of these as a daily. Because lifes supposed to be a bit fun. 😁👍
I understand about it being annoying if the fuel light comes on late, but to be honest I would not allow my tank to be so close to empty. Running the tank so low is not good for the car. I always try to ensure that I fill up with at least a quarter of a tank. The tank may seem to empty fast in its last quarter, but that may be due to the position of the sensors.
There is absolutely no issue whatsoever with running the car till it's almost empty...running it on "fumes"...perhaps. If you take a petrol tank and pump apart you will see that the pump always draws from the bottom of the fuel tank, otherwise as soon as the level of petrol in the tank drops the pump would run out of fuel...therefore the fuel draw is at the bottom...where all the "crud" apparently is. Plus as you drive round corners etc the petrol gets sloshed and mixed so in the end it really doesn't matter. If in the worse case scenario you managed to find some dirty fuel, there is a fuel filter before the engine. But as long as the pump is submerged it's fine.
@@philmaggs2248 Running your fuel tank too low can result in sediment in the bottom of the tank to be sucked into the fuel filter, blocking it. Also running too low can cause the fuel pump to overheat as it is exposed. Fuel pumps were designed to be exposed to air.
@@philmaggs2248 Sorry, I didn't realise there was more to your message and you are correct, however when running the toyota so low because the fuel light comes on late, there is always a risk that you may expose the pump. Its better to be safer than sorry
my fuel light does the same thing at the last minute however, i love keeping my 2017 model in peak condition thus i never really let it go below a quarter of fuel
The fuel gauge underestimates how much you got left. It comes on when you have 10 +/- 2 litres left in the 50L tank.
The fuel light on my gt86 comes on with about an 1/8th of a tank left. Not sure whether you've got an issue?
I was about to pick up an frs. Went with a 370z instead . The lack of power was a major factor for me.
Always refuel when it gets to half full. That way you always have old fuel in the car.
Smelling smoke happens to my '98 Toyota Corolla as well, when driven hard, which I think is funny 😅
You really are blowing the valve spring recall out of proportion, i have a GT86 from 2012 and only applied for the recall when the car had 80k on the clock. And even then the garage said i shouldnt be worried. Most of the problems happen after the recall has been done anyway.
And it didnt come with forced induction because thats not what the car stands for, its based of the AE86 with lines from the GT2000. AE86 being rwd with NA engine. I personally think that if the first thing you think about after buying a gt86/brz is the fact that you want forced induction, you kinda bought the wrong car. That being said you should try and decat the exhaust and get your hands on an Open Flash tablet and have it remapped!
Try that before going forced induction ;) You got the lovely M140i anyway for straight line speed!

dude i got 2012 gt86 on 25000 km. should i go to recall or i just dont do it ? Have you heard any engine blown issue if not going to recall ?
I cant decide to do recall or not since i have read many topics about the engine problems after recall on forums.
@@davodooo i recommend checking any gt86 owner forums from your country. Check who did recall and in what garage. Generally its better to go to a garage that already has done a couple. There were mutiple cases of engine problems after recall was done in my g86 owner forum. So yeah it does happen. Has to do with sealant not being applied properly. Ive not had this issue and ive done a lot of kms since it was done. And lets not forget theres also plenty of recalls done without issues. Whether you should do it or not is up to you :p
@@davodooo So far I have decided not to do the recall since my friend did it and ended up having to get a new engine from a 2015 FRS since his blew up. He told me it's better just to not do the recall.
Very wise. Japanese car makers actually empashizes more with balance between handling and power. But nowadays they start slowly to goes more with horsepower probably because of demands.
I have a 2013, which I took in for the recall, it had already had valve spring failure, did damage to a cam and the head, it was all fixed as part of the recall. 1 month of driving the car starts to knock like crazy. It spun a crankshaft baring. I had to fight toyota to get them to admit fault. I was without my car for 90 days in 2019. Its for sale now with a brand new engine :)

Let it be without a turbo, it's cheaper on the insurance. And still so much fun. Especially if your 1st car is an old car that's not fast in the slightest. It will feel fast and for a cheap price tag.
Exactly the reason I plan to get one soon, my current car is a slow as balls i20- absolutely anything would feel faster for anyone coming from their first car

The burning smell for me turned out to be an oil leak from the timing chain cover.
You don’t appreciate it’s highrevving, naturally aspirated power plant, and you’re using it as a highway mile-muncher...you just don’t understand this car, though you claim to.
BTW, this car can easily get 50 mpg on the highway over several hours of driving. You just have to drive it right.

Shay you can get better mpg than any manufacturers claim by driving with a light foot, anticipating traffic, coasting on the downhills, losing a few mph on the uphills, reducing your average speed while remaining in your highest gear...plenty of ways.
Shay modern motor vehicles do not use any fuel when the vehicle is in a movement gear, the accelerator pedal in not depressed, as long as the engine is above its normal idling speed.
That smell is likely being caused by oil leaking from the cam plate on the back of the engine. Mine does it too. The oil drips directly onto the exhaust. It's a very common issue that's hard to fix. So long as you keep an eye on your oil level it's not a big issue, but it is annoying.
I had the same issue with my 2013 model. The leak was fixed at the same time that the valve spring recall was done.

According to the owners group im in, its only up to 2014 that the recall is required. 14 and up it was sorted, so you should be fine. Enjoy the car!
the fuel light thing is wrong, i have one and when my fuel light comes on i can only fit 35 or so litres in the tank before i fill it to the brim and they have a 50 litre tank, they have it come on so early so that the in tank fuel pump doesn't overheat because they use the fuel as a heat soak

I driven this at Nurburgring whilst cornering the stability control would bring on the brakes and yank the car back I wasn’t even driving aggressively was disappointing it halted my progress around the track.

Toyota aren't going to increase the power of the GT86 significantly. They don't want it to compete with the expensive Supra.
Completely different car tbh, the 86 is meant for drifting and fast cornering, the handling is insanely good.
if the car came with turbos stock then the retail price would have been too high. The base platform is designed to allow for tuning!
10 miles left after the fuel light comes on? Have you ever run out of fuel? I have ran over 50km with the fuel light on with ease.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't a bunch of engines blow up specifically because they did have the valve springs replaced? Like the cars had worked perfectly since 2012, had the work done in 2020, a few weeks or months later the engine goes ka-blam.
I'm considering getting a GT86 relatively soon and I need to know whether I should get one that's had the job done or not.

1. Do not do the recall, see all the horror stories online.
2. The fuel light comes on when there is 10L is in the tank. I easily get 80+ km after the fuel light is on maybe i can even get more than that....

If you're filling up when the light comes on you still have MILES left. it comes on way too early in a GT86. At least 50 miles left in the tank
13 gallon tank, dash readout tells me I have five miles left...I fill up for 11 gallons.

My mercedes A200 AMG line makes that smell if you start booting it a but to hard before its fully warmed up i thought id broke it the first time it did it lol.

You mentioned the lack of a Turbo or Super Charger, plus @ 200bhp it could do with one of them. Many will disagree with you. I'm not techno savvy so bear with me ...
In 1983 (I'm a vintage '55 person) I bought a Celica 2lt Liftback from new. It had a mere 106bhp in that engine and it went like "Shit-off-a-shovel"; it was quick! I drove that car to UK from Cyprus in 1984 and it more than held it's own on the Italian Autostrada and German Autobahns against much more powerful cars - the opposition!
Maybe these days we're spoiled with our turbo (with lag) charged power plants. Going back-to-basics is not such a bad idea.
With regard to your other points. Perhaps you'd fare better by listening and looking at your car when you drive it instead of always relying on technology to do the work as ... man made tech and sometimes man-made "stuff" breaks down. Look at your fuel gauge for starter - I cannot believe you wait for the low-fuel light to come on. You deserve to run out of fuel imo.
My next car (when Toyota finish making it) is a Corolla Estate 1.8 ltr self-charging Hybrid! Gotta think of the planet these days.

The next gen GT86 is already under development, and should be announced soon. The Supra has a different target audience from the GT86.

how are you driving if your milage is tanking at highway speeds? my auto brz got 32mpg on a 1200mi road trip, which i find pretty respectable doing 70-80mph. As for the fuel light, do you not look at your fuel gauge? is it impossible to get to a fuel station regularly in europe? trade it in for a Limited BRZ if you absolutely have to have a range estimate because you cant read a fuel needle.

They didn't turbo bc the engine would blow, they already do from what I've seen. I've been looking at these cars hard and all I see is engine rebuilds all over the place.

One thing you should know, they're all the same cars.
2 things to say about the fuel light. You're a car guy, pay attention to your car and quit acting like a college girl. Also, drive your car until it runs out of gas, just once, so you know how low it actually goes. You could still have 100 km of gas left in the car after it's already hit empty.

No fuel like comes on with 100 miles range surely ! 10 miles is more like it :-)
