  • Still evaluating the exciting LA-Ea4 "Monster adapter", which brings modern focusing capabilities like Eye AF and tracking to older, screw-drive lenses - in this case the classic Minolta 500mm f/8 mirror lens, the only such lens in the world to have AF capabilities when it was first introduced. All A-mount cameras, would switch to a fixed, center focusing point whenever the lens was attached. This was because, historically, the center focusing point was more sensitive and sometimes was made as a “cross-point” sensor, able to recognize both vertical and horizontal contrast. I've been putting this pre-release adapter through its paces for the last couple of months, and I have a lot more tests and can answer a lot of your questions.

Great straight forward video, really helped! Also showing focus speeds is very helpful.

This is the exact combo I've been looking for, would be great for A7c with birds, thanks for uploading !😉

I saw in your test that this is tracking AF.

I have the Minolta AF 500 mounted to the a6600 via the LA-EA4. It’s a “fun” combination, provided you know and accept the limitations of a catadioptric lens and a fixed aperture. And fer gawd’s sake, use a tripod. Cheers!

Hello, thanks for your great work. May I know how it works under AF-C mode of A99 II. Is that A99II is limited in the middle single point AF-S shown in video ?

wait a second, does the a7rIV use PDAF for focus and not the slt system? My a7III only uses the SLT system not pdaf and is really limited.

Very interesting video. I really hope that the modified adapter is compatible with the Sony SAL-500F80 500mm f/8 Reflex too. It may have different electronics than the older but nearly the same Minolta AF Reflex 500mm f/8.

Do you shoot with the new mirrorless. I want to try and sneak an a99ii into my collection. I'm weary at this point, though.

I am hoping that Sony has an a99iii in the near future... native camera for native A- mount glass.

Are you selling the monster adapter?

Quite impresive considering it is focusing not just in the center but off-center as well. So maybe with a faster lens it should focus faster!
