Minolta 500mm RF ROKKOR manual focus fixed aperture mirror lens.
Like all vintage SLR lenses they can be easily adapted to mirrorless cameras with inexpensive adapters.

This is a superb video, the best Minolta AF 500 f/8 review on CZcams. I have this lens, bought it a couple of years ago for $250.00 US on eBay and use it with my Sony a900 and a77. I've always wondered why Nikon, Canon and Pentax didn't make one.

Can't speak for the others, but Nikon made one. I've been trying an adapter for my old Minolta and my Nikon digital. Focus IS a problem but I've been getting better at it. But now I'm inspired to try a movie!

They are not making them because the image quality is so bad that it would damage their business. Wish as we might, the physical limitations of these lenses make them very undesirable for terrestrial photography. They are OK-ish for astronomy.

@@vme3000 Canon got patents for such lenses. I am not aware of any current product on sale. They seem to have had such lenses in the past but I doubt they would produce anything resembling an even tolerable image. If you want a mirror telescope, buy yourself a mirror telescope. They are cheap and the better ones are basically operating near the physical limits as far as resolution is concerned. But even for astronomical purposes nothing beats a well designed apochromatic telescope. If you ever had the chance to look through a $30,000 apochromat at the moon or even a nebula, you will have seen the difference to a $3000 mirror of twice the aperture.

They all made them and the Nikon 500 mm reflex f8 is really sharp if you know how to use it.

Great video. A little bit slow and wordy at the start but once you got to actualy demonstrating the lens in use I was very impressed. I have tthe AF version of this lens so I know how difficult it is to use well. You seem to manage manual focus, possibly better than AF which is limited to centre spot so focus-and-hold is about the only option, usualy requiring a reframe and not much use for video.

Nikon started building these types of lenses for use on cameras during WWII for the Japanese military. After the war, they continued building them for the US military, although longer (1000mm) and a lot faster. They were about 50 pounds and $10,000 each. In the early 1960s, Nikon build a 500mm f 8.0 for the Nikon F system for around $600, and most of the major camera makes followed. In the 1970s, Tamron built a 500mm f 8.0 which was nearly as good as the big boys and cost half as much. There followed a wave of cheap copies which performed relatively poorly. They all loss popularity for camera use when ED type glass and new telephotos were developed to solve the aberration issues of traditional telephotos, which had previously been the only advantage of the mirror lenses.
