Today, a Tesla S on autopilot crashed and killed two people in Texas. It took a fire department over 4 hours to put out the fire. The men killed in the crash said just before they left that they wanted to go for a drive and were talking about the vehicle’s driverless features, an official said. Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive, earlier on Saturday had promoted a recent safety report from the company, writing on Twitter that “Tesla with Autopilot engaged now approaching 10 times lower chance of accident than average vehicle.”

The horn button is a horrendous idea. The middle of the yoke should also function as a horn as years of reflex and muscle memory automatically trigger driver to press the middle of steering wheel. This is the same button system in the Ferrari 458/488 and its super annoying. I'm skeptical about yoke vs wheel but will have to try before final verdict. What about soft close doors and interior accent lighting? Also need "hello Tesla' or some sort of voice wake command to interact with car.

I may be in the minority here, but I much prefer my 2018 P100D with an openable sunroof, stalks on the steering wheel, having the horn in the middle of the steering wheel, having an actual wheel instead of a dangerous and uncomfortable yolk, I like having ac vents I can adjust with my hands, the glovebox is much more easily accessible in my 2018 and I much more prefer the landscape MCU built into the dash instead on a MCU that looks like someone bolted an Ipad to my dash. The refresh did change the body slightly but my 2018 gets all the same updates as a 2023. If you can purchase a 2018 P100D with 40,000 miles for $46k, is it really worth buying a brand new Model S for over $100k? What do you get for that extra $54k. Right now I could buy 2 used model s's for the price on 1 new one.

Which versions of the Model S will use 4680 cells? I'm not sure we know the answer.
I'll tell you what it looks like to me. The Plaid + version *must* have 4680 cells. Panasonic doesn't have cells that would deliver over 500 miles of range.
And I think that's the *only* Model S that will see the new 4680 cells. Significantly, that version won't reach customers until late in 2021. This makes sense. The 4680 cell production line is not yet mature; they're still prototyping and tweaking their only 4680 line, and might not reach their quality and yield targets until summer.
Next year, I expect that there will be only one Plaid version of the car - the version with 4680 cells. And they'll begin to phase out Panasonic cells from their other Model S and X models. Those lower-tier luxury models will get a range boost, but the performance will be about the same - because they'll have fewer motors than Plaid, which is the only version to receive 3 motors.

    • @Urgelt
      @Urgelt Před 3 lety

@Matthew Pastrikos Not so much in 2021.
Eventually, I expect 4680 cells in *all* Tesla BEVs. The big question is, which models and when? The answer will be driven by their 4680 production ramp.
Semi won't be built for customers in 2021, I don't think.
CT might squeak out a few in low rate initial production this year, but it'll be 2022 when its GF-Austin production line does its serious ramping. The 250 and 300 mile range variants probably won't initially get 4680 cells, but the 500+ mile range variant almost certainly will.

The Yoke steering wheel is a silly and pointless design...
To turn the car around corners and round about's safely you need a normal full circle steering wheel. and in the EU and UK that yoke for steering will be illegal as under the law you must be able to feed the steering wheel through your hands to keep full control when turning!
And the auto guessing drive will be not safe enough or practical in a town or city!
What's to point of taking away the stalks on the steering wheel when people need those to control the cars wipers turn lights etc.
Those on steering wheel flat non-press touch buttons will for most people impossible to use when trying to steer safely.
The yoke should be a option only you pay for ( only outside the EU & UK ) in the EU & UK the normal steering wheel will be the only one to be allowed under road laws. I don't think many Tesla possible drivers will want that silly pointless hard to use yoke version... Safely matters to the law not some fancy silly non-usable unit for steering.
The back screen is a waste of time. at that angle of viewing even a child will get a bad neck trying to view it?
Also.. since when was the Model S and X meant to be a clone of the model 3 and Y? Never that's when.
They are different models on different sized battery packs and cost allot more than the model 3 and Y.
I am sure people buy the model S or X because they like them as they are not because they wish to have a clone interior wise to the cheaper model 3 and Y.
If the customers wished to buy a car that was like the model 3 or they would buy them! But they wish to have a model S or X so that means they like them not the model 3.
Keep the models different interior and exterior as they are different models in the 1st place or was the point of having different models and prices?

The new interior is cool. But surely there should be a completely new Model 'S' coming out soon? 8yrs going on to 9 yrs, 10 yrs, 11 yrs (or whatever) is an incredibly long lifecycle by normal auto industry standards. So when will the real next generation Model 'S' come out?

I wouldn't even count the Lucid Air Dream as a competing car. It's an overpriced limited edition and the production has definitely already sold out.
