Makes you wonder how comfortable this is to drive for long durations. Resting the hands on the wheel at 10 and 2 allows the arms to relax. If you have to grip the sides of the "wheel", you need to be able to rest the arms somehow when you're driving any non-trivial amount of time. On the pictures I see a wider than usual central console and an indentation in the door. Maybe those are intended for resting the arms, but the comfort of that will depend heavily on arm length.

My take on the steering wheel is that it could work if the sensitivity of the steering increases continuously with the angle of rotation. The sensitivity could possibly also be made dependent on the speed. So, on the one hand, you could stay in lane at high speeds and, on the other hand, maneuver in small parking lots without ever having to change your grip. That would even make for more security, because people would stick their hands to the wheel.
Two things, the first time I've ever seen an automobile with a yolk steering wheel was in a build they did on Netflix's Car Masters Rust to Riches, Season 1 Episode 8. They did a killer upgrade to a 1955 Lincoln Futura featuring the concept (but never actually produced) yoke steering. Another feature was a microphone on the outside because with the custom canopy closed the driver couldn't hear outside the car.

Driver's Ed: "you hold the steering wheel at 10 and 2"
Tesla: "lol 3 and 9 take it or die"
Drivers Ed told me 3 and 9 but that's a recent change (last 5-10 years)
You may be showing your age here ... 10 and 2 are old school 'cause now with airbags in the steering wheel somewhere around 4 and 8 is what is or should be taught ... reason is simple, people have broken their arms against their head and face in an impact with the violent way an airbag deploys.
@@notthatkenny I just got my permit and they told me 10 and 2
@@notthatkenny Well 3 9 is technically the most correct one. In terms turning the steering wheel, i.e. crossing over. Can't imagine crossing over at 8 4 ahah. Although tbf there is no correct way of holding the wheel on road cars. Use whatever your preference is.
@John James Keep in mind that in an F1 you would never have to cross over. If you look at rally drivers, they all hold it 9 3 for that precise reason. F1 cars have very precise steering wheels, wherever you turn, the car follows. With regular cars you might notice that's not the case. And the fastest way to get from full right to full left (and vice versa) is to cross over, for which 9 3 grip is the most superior.

Note on the yoke steering wheel, it is actually safer to rest your hands on the bottom of the wheel rather than the top in the event of an accident where air bags were to go off the one from the steering wheel will launch your hands into your face.

if they could increase the amount of steering done with the amount of input used then that would be amazing. plus safety drivers will have to rethink how to make a proper turn with out doing hand over hand or the shuffle. since there isnt a full wheel any more. Good review as always cheers.

I see that this video is from January of 2021. It is now April 21, 2021. As of right now Tesla is putting the finishing touches on these refreshes. I, like most Tesla fans, am waiting to see these cars being driven by the people who have bought them. I'm pretty sure that CZcams will light up with owners showing what the Model S or X is all about. Until then the best we can do is make educated guesses as to how the finished product will look and drive. Of course, the refreshed yoke steering wheel is what folks are most curious about. I have seen many videos that discuss and demonstrate steer by wire. Basically it lowers the steering ratio. That is to say that what normally takes a full turn of the steering wheel would take a quarter turn with steer by wire. With this type of steering the yoke steering wheel makes more sense. For more info search CZcams for Steer By Wire.

luxury cars already had very good noise isolation where you can't hear anything outside, especially if you're playing music. I don't think its a problem having active noise cancelling since Teslas have pretty subpar build quality. The noise cancelling will offset the road noise but I think a rolls royce and bentley will still have better noise isolation.
